Fair enough, since I'm pretty sure Maxis's RM99 for 300Mbps promo will increase price after the 2 years

but again, just jump again when contract is over  tongue.gif
*
Yes, Maxis never provide permanant discount
They will only give you monthly rebate for 2 years at most
And then they will leave you hanging there without contract and refused to give you any promo unless you transfer to Unifi

Kind of off-topic, but after the recent DNS incident, I'm trying to find a router that can run a VPN.

So far looking at Ubiquiti Ultra Cloud Gateway. Will probably use my old Archer C9 as a wireless AP. Would that be ok?

I'm guessing no issues running it with TM Unifi?

Just want to share some info regarding this matter because I already saw the current internal pdf for the current offer. Some nice and polite TM staff from TM point showed me.

The 300Mbps RM99 (excl. tax) and 1Gbps RM159 (exl. tax) are part of Tier 3 and Tier 4 offer. TM made these Tier 3 & 4 offers specifically to counter offer Maxis or other customer that want to switch to other ISP.
I saw only 300Mbps and 1Gbps on the table for Tier 3 & 4. Other speeds are left blank, means no offer.

I saw some keynotes below the table stated that after 2 years contract finish, The Tier 3 & 4 offers will auto change speed meaning 300Mbps will become 100Mbps for the RM99 (excl. tax) and 1Gbps will become 500Mbps for the RM159 (excl. tax) packages respectively. So that is the catch for Tier 3 & 4.

For the Tier 2, it is the normal SWU we already know about. For example , if 300Mbps RM129 (excl. tax) will be reduce to RM119 (excl. tax). But this Tier 2 package will come with the postpaid Unifi mobile plan RM39 (excl. tax) per month and you have to pay first month whether you want to use it or not and can cancel it after the 1st month. And also includes the free 6 months and new router.

I don't read the whole pdf so I don't know the further difference in detail between Tier 3 and Tier 4. Maybe some TM staff in here can shed some light if they want to expose themselves  tongue.gif

So thats it, choose wisely before making any decision.
*
I am curious too, why they call it Tier 3 & tier 4. Hope there is no hidden agenda like lower network priority etc.

And now TM learn from them by introducing this Tier 3 & 4 plan laugh.gif

Maybe consider GL-iNET Routers as well? They have an official store on Shopee
Consider the Flint 2

their routers are advertised as VPN routers, supporting OpenVPN and Wireguard, their firmware is based on OpenWRT

Otherwise I think the latest Asus routers also support Wireguard

or there are also other routers that could be flashed to run OpenWRT

But since you've mentioned Ubiquiti, consider Mikrotik as well, though not cheap

Ooh ya correct2. 2.5Gbps is only from the WAN
*
Unless you need >1Gbps for your steam PC etc, having 2.5G WAN should be enough, the rest that left over will be works like QoS, which assigned to whole WiFi and other LAN port.

So, when you having full speed downloading for your PC, no need worry about all speed used up, as there is like 100-300 Mbps left for your WiFi device. tongue.gif

QUOTE(PRSXFENG @ Sep 10 2024, 05:20 PM)
Yeah it's a service to protect from some malware
it is certainly not a replacement for an antivirus

consider also Quad9, 9.9.9.9
they also offer Malware Protection

but personally, adblocking is a better tool at preventing virus in the first place
so, an adblocking dns like Adguard Public DNS is an option
*
Yes, just like DDNS, not gonna block them all on real-time, as malware just change domain as fast as they can, lol. laugh.gif

Thanks. Will check them out.

I have a router flashed with OpenWRT serving as my personal Wifi AP for my room, but it's an older TP Link Archer model.

Because how's browser is being testing(either HTTP or websocket, you can't really test accurately, because it is not accurate enough.

Better running the app.
https://www.speedtest.net/apps

Can switch to single-thread if you really wanna test how real world is, browser mostly are single thread HTTP connection.

Ok you mention you got upgraded to 1Gbps
what Modem did you get, is it the black D-Link?

If no, then your modem probably has a max speed of Gigabit Ethernet = 940Mbps max

if yes, and assuming you used Double NAT or Bridge (this mode has a bug of randomly dropping to 300Mbps max) to connect to your TP-Link's 2.5Gig WAN Port

It is mentioned you have a Gigabit Ethernet Port
and the only ports left on the TP-Link are Gigabit as well

so again, 940Mbps max

If you have an advanced high end Wifi 6 client, maybe can pull over the 940Mbps barrier, but hard

each Ethernet frame have protocol header.
each IP frame have protocol header.
each application packet have protocol header.
those will take some space in addition to your actual user data payload.

unless your router AND LAN card are both capable of 2.5Gbps, at most you can get is 940Mbps.
if using Wifi, still have to check whether both sides are capable of communicating at higher capacity.

anyone knows if Unifi Plus Box can be repurposed with mainstream linux distros? don't want those restrictive distros with limited OS packages.

eager to use it for mapping unsecured DNS from dhcp LAN to secure DNS, through IPsec tunnel..

i don't think Play store have app capable of performing the above intent upon every reboot (after power restore).

All I know is the 1st gen Unifi Plus Box is a rebranded Skyworth LEAP S1 with the MicroSD Card Port deleted
powered by an Amlogic S905X2, with 2GB RAM and 8GB of Flash
also rebranded as the MECOOL KM2 and STRONG LEAP S1

There is little info out there beyond like

As someone that's running Unifi full stack for my network, it's like a drug to me personally, once I get one thing I want more, that might also applies to you

Considering you are quite technical from your conversation, Mikrotik might be your bread and butter, or even better, use OPNSense as your main and the rest just mix and match and DIY yourself thumbsup.gif

Also from what I can gather, PPPoE on Ubiquiti is not as fast as maybe even the Archer C9, Unifi isn't that optimized to use PPPoE protocol and it's more suitable for using like iPoE, if you ever want to push more speed, that might also be a limiting factor. Currently my UDM SE can only pull around 850-870, max I've seen is 910-920 on my 1Gbps, but that might just be an OLT limitation on my side and might again DIFFER from you

They give some d-link modem but I didn't use it as it looks cheap. I'm staying with my router. Yeah, mine got limitation as the LAN port max is 1Gbps. But anybody here who has 2.5Gbps infra can actually get at least 999Mbps when running speedtest?

Depends on your area OLT, 10G/2.5G equipment on my side rarely can pull over 900 nowadays but back at my old parents place in Ulu Tiram with Alcatel Lucent can pull 1040Mbps even when network is not completely quiet

You will never notice that extra ~60Mbps bandwidth most of the time, TM won't bother to help you get the extra as they're trained to just approve anything beyond like 90% of the advertised speed. If you want to spend the extra money to chase the bandwidth down, be ready to spend money as 10G equipment is cheaper than 2.5G equipment, and you might or might not get screwed over by the OLT that your fiber ONT is connected to

baaah, i don't have capacity or patience if having to pry open and pin here and there.
no time and no conducive working@home enviroment that can support such enthusiastic endeavour.

but it is such a waste that i have 2 more V1 and V2 lying idle in store room.
would have been good if there's app that can do the pony tricks i want, but it will be tricky if needing to relaunch apps again and again, especially when i am away.

(i have a 2nd V2 being used for Android gaming purpose in kids' bedroom.)

Does anybody know if the ip redirection is still in place? When I do ipconfig /all.. the DNS still points to 2001:e68:542f:2d04::1. The DNS in my router is set to 1.1.1.1
