If renting a bicycle is not your cup of tea (as Regent suggested) then yes car rental is perfectly fine.
I did that last year with 5 people in total and it was convenient to drive around the 5 lakes area.

If you are asking about going around the lake, then taking the bus, walking or cycling would do. But if you plan to do the other attractions, it would be easier to get a car.

Yesterday straightaway booked JR Pass for me and my wife on Klook cuz excited with the promo code. Directly afterwards payment, found out travelrecommend has better promo code. Could save at least RM 80. Arghhh felt so stupid and cheated.

Tokyo is big and its easy for you to lose your friends so having internet will be super easy if one of you are lost

Some scenarios can happen eg:

Imagine one of your friend did not manage to get out of train in time and stuck in the train lol and 2 of you are out

or one of you are busy at the hentai section at your popular book store but two of your friend already go to the next building/floor

On another hand, bought Sagano Romantic Train tickets yesterday for my trip to Arashiyama. Bought the tickets for cart 5 too which is the so-called most beautiful cart. It could be more expensive to buy from online but at least we are guaranteed with tickets on our preferred time. Got it from Taobao. Cart 5 cannot be reserved online from official site or Klook/KK Day. I think these TB sellers got local contacts to do it physically at the station.

Unless you insist the whole group must go around together, better to get pocket wifi. My last trip I got local sim card in my phone but it was difficult to manage when I have to pass it to others because they needed the line more than I do. A pocket wifi can be easily passed among ur group. Either that or if you have spare unused phone, can bring it along as a wifi hotspot with a local sim.
