Traveling to Kyoto in mid-November and having some trouble finding affordable accommodation at Kawaramachi/Gion station (<RM400/night for 2 people). There aren't many listings on AirBNB and sites like Expedia/Agoda. Should I wait until next month for more listings to appear? Also worried if I might be booking a bit too late..

Are there cases where Japan Airbnb hosts cancel paid and confirmed stay at the very last minute? This is what's worrying me about booking with Airbnb, first time user here..

QUOTE(hamtaro98 @ Apr 21 2019, 07:57 PM)
Hi guys just need some opinion here from all the seniors here.
Im gonna travel to osaka next year mid of january and when i reach kansai airport it will be around 9.40pm night.

1) So im just dilemma wherther i should stay a night at the nearest hotel from airport or head directly to osaka city hotel ?

2) Second question is im thinking if i stay at the hotel near to kansai airport then i should direct to kyoto in the next morning to start my itinerary in kyoto first and save osaka for the last.

3) And lastly can i just stay osaka for my 8 days trips and travel conveneintly to kyoto and nara ?

Any recommendation ? Thanks alot.

Btw my trip is 8days 7 nights.
*
Same situation here as your no.1 question.. There's one hotel in the airport itself but it costs a bomb. But I also remembered there being several night trains which you can hop on to..

Think i will just skip the hotel near airport as it is really expensive...
Is it possible go straight to Kyoto after landed at that late hour ? im worried if Airasia delay...btw im traveling with my wife only. TQ
Can i directly to Kyoto after i landed ?
Thanks for the info, think i will just skip the airport hotel option and head straight to Osaka city (near Dotonburi ?) from the airport.
*
Did you search online on the timing of the trains and whether they go to kyoto?

QUOTE(hamtaro98 @ Apr 22 2019, 11:23 PM)
So which of the following plan is recommended as im currently drafting my itinerary ?

A. 2 days in Osaka -> 3 days in Kyoto and Nara -> 2 days in Osaka
B. 4 days in kyoto and Nara -> 3 days in Osaka (provided i head straight to Kyoto in the next morning after arrive in Kansai so i will just stay my first night in Osaka)
C. 3 days in Osaka -> 4 days in Kyoto and Nara (last day take the train from kyoto to Kansai airport)

Sorry this is the first time travel to Japan (2 pax) and landed in Kansai airpport at 9.40 night really make me headache.

Thanks for the help.

I guess the itinerary really depends on you, what you want to do, what you want to see, etc?

For me, I don't have to spend so much time in Osaka as it's mostly for food and shopping. Kyoto is the reason why I came to Japan for: the beautiful old streets and gardens/shrines/temples. So I'm spending more time in Kyoto than in Osaka but my trip is a lot longer lah, 5 nights in Osaka and 7 nights in Kyoto so I don't need to cover so many areas in each day.

I bought my simcard from hello1010

Japan Unicom (5GB) Travel Prepaid SIM Card
15 Days | 5GB Data | Hotspot
RM76

5GB is more than enough to support my travel while im at japan, mostly using it for google map and some social media/streaming
Besides, the validity is 15 days  icon_rolleyes.gif

If you want to play it safe, try booking transfer service from klook or kkday if you have a bunch of people with you.
For my case, i have 8 person and i secured a van via klook for around RM700 straight to my destination

Other than that, feel free to take the train (might need to rush if you delay occured)
*
There's only both of us traveling to Japan for 12 nights and was thinking to get roaming man pocket WiFi for around RM150 hmm.gif but your mention of the Japan sim card got me thinking.. hmm.gif

Edit: didn't realize it's RM156 for 1 person!

IMHO, the best roaming deal would be from Digi's Rm25 for 72 hour roaming pass which includes 2GB data and 30 Mins free roaming calls.
*
Yeah I used that for China but you know what? Roaming on that sim card really sucks a lot of juice!

Its because you use your phone to tether your internet.  biggrin.gif If you use it like you do in Malaysia, battery usage would be the same. Anyway, it saves you the hassle of getting a new sim card in the airport and the need to carry another phone to use that sim card with. I always use Digi and UMobile roaming whenever I travel. UMobile roaming is cheap too, Rm10/day unlimited roaming but Japan is not included. sad.gif
*
I only tether a few times a day and each time for only 10-15 minutes but the battery drain is bad. Anyway, I used it only once so I might be mistaken plus I was using an old phone with rather bad battery life. So for you, the battery life is more or less the same?

Yes. My Oneplus 6 needs to be charged twice a day (from morning till need) if used to tether. If not, battery life would be around the same as per usage in MY. Anyway, would be best to try to bring a newer phone for usage in Japan as their 4G/LTE network is really fast and their coverage is superb.
*
Using a Pixel 3 XL and most likely getting an Aukey 10,000mAh PD powerbank which I hope is adequate for a whole day of usage in Japan.

QUOTE(cckthechun @ Apr 29 2019, 05:14 PM)
Just get the sim, i encountered lots of issue with pocket wifi previously.
Device not working, not charging etc ...  getting the sim is as simple as plug and play, + the coverage and speed is relatively good

**best if used in a dual-sim phone smile.gif can use whatsapp application etc with msia number
*
Noted. Too bad mine doesn't have dual sim. So, if I use the Japan sim card, I can't use my whatsapp huh. Couple of years back I screwed up whatsapp when i click "change number" in whatsapp and all, all my messages got deleted. I think this was before whatsapp implemented the chat backup via google drive hmm.gif

QUOTE(sweet_pez @ Apr 29 2019, 09:42 PM)
The sim drains battery? I realized a similar issue and deactivated my 4G, and used the normal 3G instead. It helped a little, and i was told that under cold weather - its common for your phone batt to drain more than usual. Not a technical person so i'm not sure how true this is haha.
Ahhhh but SIM also potentially got problem ya so its not absolute biggrin.gif i have encountered issues with both SIM and WIFI router before.
.
*
Oh ya, the cold weather could be the culprit actually. Never thought of that. When I was roaming with Digi in China, the temperature was between 5-10C

Just wanted to ask, KANSAI ONE PASS allows us to take any bus and any train in Kyoto and Osaka right and has no expiration date (meaning it's not like those 1 or 2 day passes)..?

I think a prepaid card is more worth it for me as I won't be taking trains/busses that often as we will be mostly targeting a specific area for each day.

Based on my understanding, the word "Pass" here is a bit misleading. It's not actually a pass, it's more like a normal IC card with additional benefits. You still recharge the card as usual and tap it as you use the public transports. But you get some additional discounts at selected attractions.
*
Thanks for the reply. Yes I'm aware it's not actually a "pass" but a prepaid card. This actually fits our itinerary very well.

From what I have searched, there are two train lines namely JR line and Nankai line from Kansai airport. The Kansai One Pass covers these two lines right?

i been using Travel Recommend for my trip to Japan and Korea
So far unlimited and stable connection (Tokyo, Kanagawa area should be fine) - and i shared it with 5 devices too, never found any speed throttling (i think for asia countries, you need not to worry about speed throttling)

and now is promo time, which if u use VISA 15% discount or VISA platinum 30% discount for daily rates (standard RM12/day)

i just booked for my trip to Tokyo end of this month at RM8.4/day  laugh.gif

Among all the paid temples in kyoto, which would be the most worthwhile to visit? Nanzenji, Tofukuji, Kinkakuji, Daigoji, etc.

Not to go in to pray but more to visiting the gardens and surroundings

Visiting this autumn mid to late November

It depends what is your agenda. e.g. we ask the locals during Sakura season, and they tell us which and which temple is having the best bloom this few days, so we choose one and went to Tofukuji. Overall the temple is quite nice but crowded also.

Will be in Kyoto from 21 Nov to 27 Nov to catch the peak autumn season.

To enjoy the atmosphere, walk the gardens and take pictures smile.gif

I heard photography is banned at that Tsutenkyo Bridge?

i don't think it's a good idea to jump multiple location within 9 days
1. u won't be able to experience fully of 1 place
2. spend too much time on transport instead of exploring
3. cost way too much(JR pass)
4. basically just touch & go(pointless)
why not just stay the whole period in tokyo?
or split half and half with tokyo and osaka/kyoto and discard hokkaido
*
I have the same thoughts too last time, tried to cover Tokyo and also Kansai area in one trip but realised its too rushing. Now in the midst of arranging my itinerary in Osaka (5 nights) and Kyoto (7 nights).

Agree with the touch n go, some places might really take time to explore like dotonburi, shinsaibashi and shinsekai. In kyoto, I would really like to take my time to wander the streets of Gion; Hanamokoji Dori, Ninenzaka & Sanenzaka, Gion Shirakawa and the nearby Yasaka Shrine. Kiyomizudera is nearby too but I read its still under construction so I might give this a miss..

Ohh not to mention the beautiful Pontocho Alley!

Hi all,

May I ask which is the best start point to explore Dotonbori all the way to Shinsaibashi shopping street or either way...Some i read say get off at Osaka Namba station but since the location is not far I want to know where to start is better.

Thanks in advance
*
If you don't mind walking maybe you can start at Kuromon Ichiba market first then walk up to Dotonburi and finally Shinsaibashi shopping district. I based this on looking at the maps only, have yet to go to Osaka biggrin.gif (going this November)

Current exchange rate are Rm384.3 for 10000 Yen
Maybank Rate are Rm391.00 for 10000 Yen
Maybank charge Rm6.7 as service fees
*
QUOTE(JohnsonLoi @ Jun 17 2019, 10:20 AM)
I think the rate is quite reasonable. Only 1.7% loss due to exchange rate and charge Rm6.7 per withdrawal as service fees from Maybank.

Say if I withdrawal 100,000 yen from 7-11 or JP Post bank ATM, only lost RM 67 due to exchange rate (3910 - 3843) + Rm6.7 = RM73.70
*
So how does it work withdrawing from Japan ATM? Just look for the VISA/Mastercard logo?

Hi thanks,
My flight arriving at 08.45am in KIX, so should be able to purchase right?

I am torn between:

1) JR West Kansai Area Pass (4 days ¥6500)
- from what I understand, I can use this pass from airport to board 'Haruka' train to Namba, which i think is very convenient. I read that JR also has quite a wide network station so it will be much easier for first timer like me, and it covers some Rapid line too (not sure what tis is)

2) Kansai Thru Pass (3 days ¥5200)
- this pass looks like it covers most of the rail line in Osaka, except for JR line. However it only cover for 3 days and I do not want to fork extra for another day pass. Will this pass can be use to & from KIX too? Or i will need to board other train to Namba?
*
Actually do u need the passes? These are actually quite expensive. If you only plan to visit a few places in a day, it's not worth it.

I guess most would recommend the prepaid card (pay as you use) instead aka ICOCA

I decided not to go with Airbnb because the agreement is really between you and the owner and the owner can really cancel on you last minute. Happened to a family member of mine.

It's also quite frustrating because the location of the units in the map is not correct, more often its way further away than what's shown on the map.

Luckily, the hotels I booked in Osaka and Kyoto has extrmeley good location and very reasonable too.

why do you keep going to kansai? not boring? I regret not Book to osaka instead. look like kansai is more lively than Tokyo. is JR pass the shortest 7 days? look at klook the price already 1k. 1/3 of my budget. actually if combine with my waifu our budget are 6k. for 12 days do you recommend me to explore only Tokyo or extend to kansai? if got JR pass all are free or must pay another transport fees to the attraction places?
*
I think you could still do Tokyo + Osaka/Kyoto but it might be a rush trying to cover so many places in just 12 days. Really depends on the type of traveller you are? Are you the type who enjoy visiting many places in one day or do you prefer to take your time to not rush around?

Hello1010 Japan sim card. RM75 for 5GB, 15 days

QUOTE(fruitie @ Aug 15 2019, 09:02 AM)
Saturday? I think a bit too late now. I'm not a fan of MiFi rental due to battery and coverage if travel in a bunch. If the person holding that thing and walks away, everyone will have no Internet.

Since your time is a bit constraint now, you can get SIM card from Hello1010 and drop by their office to collect. I pre-ordered my SIM card from Shopee at around RM 107 for 30GB/15 days.
*
What sim card is that? 30GB for 15 days is great, care to share the link brows.gif
