Where should i stay and should i stay in one place for the whole week?

Lets start from here and to update the place to stay and the place to visit after getting suggestion from experience senior member from this forum.

As suggested by icehart member to visit Lake Toya, Onsen, Asahiyama Zoo and sapporo. When to schedule the above place?

I wish to have a leisure trip and maybe the most is to visit 2 places in a day.
*
Come i help for fun

Sunday morning arrival - Go to Noberibetsu straight away for accomodation with onsen, preferably.

Monday - Day trip to Lake Toya.

Tuesday - Leave Noberibetsu in the morning for to stay in Sapporo for a night. (Visit Mount Moiwa, Beer Factory, etc)

Wednesday - Leave Sapporo in the morning to stay in Asahikawa for two nights (Visit Asahiyama Zoo)

Thursday - Day trip to Furano or Asahidake (with Asahikawa as your base)

Friday - Leave Asahikawa to stay in Sapporo for a night (Visit Susukino shopping district, Sapporo station shopping area, buy your snacks and stuff before going back)

Saturday - More shopping in Sapporo if you want. (Visit Odori Park). Leave Sapporo in the evening to stay in Chitose for a night (because of Sunday morning early flight - choose your hotels carefully because some provide free shuttle to the airport early in the morning)(Visit Aeon Chitose or Chitose Outlet Mall if you have time)

Sunday - Go airport

Dear Japan Veteran Travellers..

May I ask, how do you deal with public/shared bathrooms in Japan ?

I am visiting Fuji area, and since there are very limited accomodations.. I had to choose a accomodation with a Shared Bathroom (open shower area) , right next to their Onsen ...

My wife and I are really not sure what to think, and how this will go... I am currently doing my research online about their etiquette , and .... How do you Malaysians handle Shared Bathing in Japan ? Going in naked to bath is quite unnerving ! lol... Please advice ..

My wife was thinking of wearing her simple swimwear to shower (not entering Onsen) ... But is that rude? Or can we just quickly shower with any swimsuit and get out quickly? LOL sorry if this is a funny question....  Sumimasen... T

Is it Kawaguchiko?

There are so many normal hotels in Kawaguchiko with attached bathroom

The rest of your pros and cons not really relevant, so just concentrate on these few. Osaka / Kyoto / Nara / Kobe area tends to be more cultural Japan (see temples, etc). Whichever you choose depends on these, end of the day we also can't decide for you.

For activities for your kid, Nara has deer walking around the temple and town area (not sure if he or she too young to appreciate)

As of July 23, 51 people had already contracted SFTS, which has a fatality rate of up to 30 percent. Five of the patients died. Since the first SFTS infection was confirmed in Japan in 2013, 280 people have been infected, of which 58 died, according to the NIID.

“In 50 percent of the cases, tick bites were not detected,” Saijo said, explaining that ticks tend to migrate to the armpits, groin or hair-covered areas where they are often difficult to notice.

“SFTS doesn’t have any specific traits that would make the disease recognizable. It’s no different from a cold or stomach flu,” he said.

After an incubation period of six days to two weeks, SFTS causes fever, nausea, diarrhea and drowsiness, according to the health ministry.

It's actually taking a risk to visit deer parks.

After watching Monster Inside Me documentary, many victims usually reported that they were unaware that they were bitten by ticks.

After experiencing some mild snow in nearby Tokyo (Fujikawaguchiko, Karuizawa) early this year, I want to go to Japan again next year (January/February).

Where is the better place to experience snow in Japan?

I'm not really so much into skiing since I have don't have experience in skiing.

I'd happy enough to take a stroll around the hotel area like what I did early this year. (Touching snow, kicking snow, taking pictures)

Hokkaido (Niseko, Asahikawa, etc)

or

Nagano area (Kusatsu, Shirakawago, Myoko Kogen, Shiga Kogen, etc).

Blofeld Nagano Niigata Yamagata areas are all 3hrs ish from Tokyo and have plenty of snow activities for non skiiers for a short 2 or 3 day jaunt.

Yamagata area you can go see the fox village and go to zao onsen to see the snow monsters. On your way back stop over for day onsen at kaminoyama onsen.

http://look-see-eat.blogspot.com/2018/02/z...-itinerary.html

Alternately go Nagano Niigata area to check out the snow monkeys. And stay overnight at an onsen town up in the mountains to walk around in the snow.

http://look-see-eat.blogspot.com/2016/02/n...awara-plum.html

If you don't want to travel so far then from Tokyo there are many places nearby that are day trippable, for example mt fuji area, gala yuzawa area, etc.

Thanks for the recommendation.

How about between Hokkaido and the Nagano area above you mentioned. Which one is a better place to go?

Day 9
Morning: Shirakawago
After wander around Ainokura Village and took photo at the viewpoint, took bus back to Shirakawago explore remaining of the area and took bus again to Takaoka Station for Light Up Tour.

Evening: Shirakawago Light Up
From Takaoka I joined the Kaetsunou bus tour to Shirakawago for Light Up. Apparently the Shiroyama viewpoint usually open for public to ascend during daylight is closed during light up and only allow descend. Anyway the viewpoint is crazily crowded during the light up but the view is really magical so can see why so much ppl flock to there. rclxm9.gif  After that return to Takaoka from Shirakawago I took overnight bus to Tokyo from Toyama.

I read that the Shiroyama Viewpoint is now closed to public at night.

That means you have to go back all the way to Takaoka (to join the tour) just to see the Shirakawago Light Up?

Yup. Recommend to take Kaetsunou World Heritage Pass if you're travelling between villages for trip flexibility and using World Heritage Bus.
*
Kaetsunou World Heritage Pass is only available from Takaoka to Shirakawago?

What if I stay at Takayama as the base? Are the pass and the World Heritage Bus available from Takayama?

If Takayama you can take Nohi Bus to Shirakawago, which is what I did last time.

World Heritage Bus Pass only worth if you travelling alot between villages (Gokayama, Suganuma, Ainokura etc) as it serve from Shirakawago to Takaoka Station.

Thanks

In January/February, are there any risk of road closures (to Shirakawago) due to heavy snow?

Based on your experience, which town is a better place to stay as the base before heading to Shirakawago?

I'm thinking between Kanazawa, Toyama or Takayama.

Is staying at Hakuba Valley and Shiga Kogen for three nights each considered too long, considered that I'm not a skier?

Hakuba Valley (3 nights)

Shiga Kogen (3 nights)

are there any free parking available at Takayama city?

I know that in kawaguchiko, there are a lot of free parking at the centre of the town.

How about takayama?

I checked google map and look around but all are paid parking

Nope. No free parking. Unless you park at convinience stores or restaurant parking. But if you are in the center of town, it is all paid parking.

Thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

Will there be any likelihood of road closure between takayama and shirakawago in January due to snow?

Snow are not deadly, deadly was black ice which usually form during morning.
If you not experience driving on winter, just avoid morning.

Black ice almost kill me many times. seriously injured  sad.gif

How about around 9am?

Will black ice melt by then?

You can opt to travel on either the highway and trunk road between these two areas. The snow plough goes through the highway only when there is a lot of snow on the road, so there wont be any road  closures. The snowfall around these areas are not as heavy as it can get in Hokkaido, so no worries. Just make sure you specify you want snow tires when you rent your car in Tokyo or Osaka because snow tires are considered as optional. Also get your CEP as it will be more worth it to use as tolls are pretty expensive.
If you have the time, remember to drop by at Shin HOtaka Ropeway, very nice attraction worth doing where there is lots of snow.

i drive from kanazawa to shirakawago to takayama & shin hotaka ropeway (this 1 must go) on last year end of dec. yes got snow but still pretty safe to drive d. drive in safe speed & careful lo... request snow tyre when you rent your car in osaka, kyoto or tokyo la... Well the excitement i see snow totally forgot the fear of driving in snow 1st time  sweat.gif
*
Thanks for the suggestion.

I have one full day left unallocated for any activity. I thought of giving one full day to Takayama city itself and doing it away with Shin Hotaka because i read one negative review of Shin Hotaka.

That person said he can't see anything up there in the mountain during winter. sweat.gif

So i guess i should put back Shin Hotaka into my itinerary.

First day - arrive at Takayama (walk around at Sanmachi Takayama)
Second day - Day trip to Shirakawago
Third day - Shin Hotaka (instead of spending another full day again at Takayama)
Fourth day - Leave for Hakuba

Tbh, there is nothing much to do around the city of Takayama. The shops closes pretty early (Japanese Standards). Hida No Sato is also an attraction in Takayama city you might want to consider. I stayed at Takayama Four Seasons Hotel and its smack right in the centre of the city with free parking. You might want to consider that. Shin Hotaka ropeway is more towards snow playing and to experience heavy snowfall by itself. There are also ski resorts nearby if you are into skiing.
*
Thanks!

Is Takayama city itself covered with snow in January?

Is the Hida No Sato worth to pay to enter?

I saw there is a mini snow corridor in Shin Hotaka ropeway. The mini snow corridor (very very small scale) is similar to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route. But I'm not sure exactly where is that mini snow corridor at Shin Hotaka.

If you don't mind, can you share your itinerary at Takayama?

1) No Takayama is not covered in snow. You may get a bit of snow on the roofs of buildings overnight but that's it.

2) Yes. Especially the Lit Up Hida No Sato. Tip try to go in the evening before sunset.

3) I didn't notice any mini snow corridor near Shin Hotaka. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is another must do trip though.  biggrin.gif

4) Sure. Let me look for it.
*
Thanks!

How did you arrive Takayama? Did you use the Limited Express Wide View Hida?

This is the snow corridor (some websites called it) at Shin-hotaka biggrin.gif

Have you been to Yudanaka?

I want to ask you about Yudanaka near Shibu Onsen

I'm planning to drive there to stay there. Some of the ryokan hotels don't have parking lots.

Not sure if there are public car parks available?

Depends on where you are going. There is a subway pass for unlimited use for 24 hours, 48 Hours and 72 Hours for travel around Tokyo subways. If you don't travel a lot, getting a suica/passmo would be adequate.
You meant the 5th Floor of Haneda is the floor with the outdoor observatory where you can watch the airplanes? Anyway, I really salute you guys who can spend overnight at an airport.  biggrin.gif I really need a proper bed to get some shuteyes, so if I stay overnight at an airport, I will be a zombie tomorrow.

I still cant accept the onsen bathing culture, even after trying so many times. I really loathe going in a bathroom with naked men all around.  sweat.gif Any ways to overcome this anxiety? The only onsen I have tried was a private one in a hotel near Takayama.
*
Which hotel in Takayama got private onsen?

I am curious will you be penalised if you miss your reservation using JR Pass/Tokyo Wide Pass/etc?

Let's say you reserved a 12pm ride. But you missed the ride and you want to take the next ride at 1pm.

Will you be penalised? Will you be barred from the next ride?

And what if you arrived the station earlier and you want to change the reservation to 11am from 12pm instead? Are you able to do that?
