Guys, right now I'm getting SCNA message on CH 805 and CH 806, but I am still able to receive CH 549 and the rest of the channels as usual.
Anyone else is facing this?
*
Yes, 2 days ago when I was watching CH 806 around 8 pm and I initially thought that it might be the clouds as it was raining then but I could still watch other channels when I switched over, like 813, 814. The SCNA message on 806 went off after 10 minutes and no further message for the night.

It’s a good news for unifi TV viewers though.

Confusing part is, even though Kristal Astro no longer exist i assume it'll be available via the beIN app only?

I don't think they'll prioritise this matter also. They'll say the video bitrate they use is "considered okay" and acceptable, and then close your case.

The video bitrate of their 4K UHD channels now (ch805, 806, 549) is still at 18.5Mbps constant bitrate per UHD channel.
Compared to 2019 when Ultra Box initially launches, the video bitrate was 25Mbps constant bitrate per UHD channel.

Meanwhile for its HD channels, they still sandwiched up to 14 HD channels per transponder (DVB-S2 FEC 5/6) as of today.
Back then when Measat 3b launches in 2014 and Astro started using that satellite to offer more HD channels, it was maximum up to 8-10 HD channels per transponder (DVB-S2 FEC 5/6), and the HD picture quality was way better than what we see today. ]
The Netflix HD bitrate is 5.56Mbps

Hmm...
That's quite low?
Was thinking around 8Mbps like that 😁

depends.. not all movie/series have the same bitrate (HD/UHD) and Netflix oso announce last time they using new codec which utilize lower bandwidth with maintained quality

Netflix one is OTT streaming, but Astro satellite one is a linear broadcast channel. Video encoding method are somehow a little different between the two...

Anyway, Netflix isn't always using H.264 video codec... Depending on your device, that 5.56Mbps HD bitrate that Feliex mentioned could be for VP9 or AV1 video codec.

Plus, Netflix invested a lot of money and effort in its video encoding algorithm to make sure its HD/UHD picture quality remains superb at the lowest bitrate possible.

For Astro, nah..... dry.gif money/profit is the most important thing than anything else biggrin.gif

Or maybe they didn't get the memo that Kristal Astro already ceased in Brunei, since it's a small market there and people thinks that it is the same thing as Astro Malaysia.

This interesting information...
Can use encoding algorithm to make PQ at best with low bitrate? Then it's should be useful for astro.... I know profit important for them... But they should think long term... They can save $$$... Because more usage of transponder can be at maximum level...

VP9 is almost similar to H.265 which is more efficient than the H.264. The reason for using VP9 most likely because it is royalty free. smile.gif

This is what recommended by Netflix

There is a difference between encoding leisurely as Netflix can, vs encoding on the fly that Astro has to do.

A similarly file encoded at "realtime" speed (as Astro needs to do since they are broadcasting live will never look as good as a similarly sized file that is encoded at a slower speed (something that Netflix has the luxury of).

FWIW, i am actually quite impressed with how good Astro actually can churn out it's stream that are used for Sooka/Astro plug n Play. Not even Singapore's MediaCorp stream looks as good as Astro's

I think it does not matter. It is the processing power determine how fast data can be encoded.

When you stream movie online, the software determines your data speed and decide how much buffer it need for smooth viewing. On the encoding side, if the processing is chuckled for whatever reason data will fill in the buffer. I believe the streaming quality is more on the how much you allow for BER (Bit Error Rate) in your data. Lower BER will give better streaming quality at the cost of data efficiency.

Well yeah, but for Netflix, the files are already encoded beforehand. All the different bitrates version of the files are there, and they are served accordingly to whatever speed your internet has. Hence they can get the best quality at the smallest filesize.
It's another thing for a livestream, where you have to encode on the fly, and encode different quality of the stream at the same time as well. You are giving away quality because speed is more important. And to do this, companies usually don't use CPU encoding, but dedicated hardware encoders. IIRC while Unifi TV use a generic off the shelf encoder, Astro actually uses Intel's QuickSync for their live streams, which results in better quality

Astro told me that changes to super pack 3a is no longer possible as this plan is no longer offered. My current pack comes with dynasty, korean, new emperor plus, movies, sports, news, documentaries, about 160 per month. Since i already have my own netflix, they advised changing to platinum pack is the best option, however, need to pay additional 40 per month. Question, what other option i have? Are there difference between astro binded netflix vs the standard netflix? I know disney hotstar, astro box version is not the same as installed version on your tv, the tv version is better as some contents can be streamed as 4K but the box version cannot.
