Marvel Studios and Paramount Extend Distribution Agreement

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios today announced an agreement under which Paramount will distribute Marvel's next five self-produced feature films on a worldwide basis. The deal, an extension of the original agreement made by Brad Grey when he arrived as CEO and Chairman of Paramount Pictures, includes theatrical distribution in foreign territories previously serviced by Marvel through local distribution entities (Japan, Germany, France, Spain and Australia/New Zealand). The distribution pact capitalizes on Marvel and Paramount's successful efforts with Iron Man, which has grossed $574 million worldwide for Marvel.

The highly anticipated live action releases include Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010), Thor (July 16, 2010), The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011), and The Avengers (July 15, 2011). The distribution agreement also includes Iron Man 3.

"Coming off of 'Iron Man's' incredible success this summer, we could not be more excited about extending our relationship with Marvel," said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures. "Marvel's iconic brand, its popular characters and its proven ability to create compelling and visually spellbinding films complement Paramount's great history of filmmaking. We look forward to a long and successful run together."

Hulk to be a villain?



IRON MAN screenwriter Mark Fergus spoke to MTV about his belief that the Hulk should be the villain in the upcoming AVENGERS movie that is being built towards:

"I hope ‘The Avengers’ embraces that... You don’t want like 10 super-badass good guys fighting together. Where’s the fun in that? Let’s break it off a little. Friends or colleagues who become enemies is always an interesting thing because you know it’s based on love and friendship and that’s always the worst thing to have turn bad — is someone you actually care about and someone you actually believe in.”

Louis Leterrier added:

“I left the door open for whoever’s going to direct ‘The Avengers’ with our last shot. Edward [Norton] and I, we consciously decided to make the last shot of the movie when he opens his eyes and he smirks at the camera... Is he enjoying it? Is he malicious? That’s what’s great about Edward. You don’t know if he’s a good guy or bad guy. He’s always on this edge and we’ve been sort of surfing that edge, that very thin edge during the entire movie.”

This, in my opinion, is an excellent choice. But what do you guys think?

The Beast May Be Unleashed As The Villain In The Avengers



Can the big green be mean? Well, we know the Hulk can be easily misunderstood, but can he be evil enough to end up as the villain in the highly anticipated movie, The Avengers? According to MTV’s Splash Page, some seasoned players in the Marvel Film Universe are pushing for the film’s ultimate superhero team to battle a fellow hero, rather than a pure villain.

Iron Man writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby told MTV News they would be all for making the Hulk the bad guy. When you have a team of powerhouse superheroes like Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor and Captain America, you can’t just have any old villain for them to take down. Fergus agrees. “You don’t want like 10 super-badass good guys fighting together. Where’s the fun in that? Let’s break it off a little. Friends or colleagues who become enemies is always an interesting thing because you know it’s based on love and friendship and that’s always the worst thing to have turn bad — is someone you actually care about and someone you actually believe in.” I couldn’t agree more. Without such an interesting plot twist, most comic book movies would be much too similar: the good guy takes down the bad guy. Pretty cut and dry. But with so many Hulkamaniacs out there and there already being sufficient background information on the character with the recent release of The Incredible Hulk, any audience member would be likely to feel the pain of a friend turned foe.

The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier, even left this opportunity open for whoever becomes the director of The Avengers. Leterrier wanted the audience to see the Hulk open his eyes and smile, leaving them wondering whether or not he is actually vicious. Leterrier didn’t stop there. He dubbed the scene during which General Ross and Tony Stark meet the first scene of The Avengers.

I’m not as well schooled in the comic book world as many of you out there, but this idea does seem to have potential. By convoluting the story with such as twist, plot development could be unlimited. So, the Hulk is a green light for me, but, then again, I am open to hearing more suggestions. And, considering the fact that The Avengers isn’t due until 2011, I’m sure there will be.

In the cartoon, Hulk was potrayed as the villain, and it works well.
With the same formula turned into live action, and with proven success of Iron Man and Incredible Hulk movie, I think the idea will continue to be awesome

Robert Downey Jr. On ‘Avengers’ Movie: ‘If We Don’t Get It Right, It’s Really Going To Suck’

This week, MTV News named Robert Downey Jr. as the actor we’re most thankful for this year, and we here at Splash Page couldn’t agree more. After all, not only has Downey taken the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man and made it his own, there doesn’t seem to be an actor more excited about not only his place in comics-based films, but the future of the genre as well.

The internet damn-near gave the actor a standing ovation when news broke last month about Downey not only signing on for “Iron Man 2,” but also officially joining the cast of the absurdly-anticipated “Avengers” movie. So naturally, we had to get Downey’s take on the upcoming film that’s destined to be the Holy Grail for Geekdom, and you can rest assured knowing that the actor is well-aware of how important the film will be to not only Marvel, but the comics community as a whole.

“If we don’t get it right it’s really, really going to suck,” said Downey. “It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel’s best and brightest because it’s the hardest thing to get right. It’s tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters.”

However, in taking on the role of a key member of the Avengers to such digital fanfare, Downey has in a sense become the face of the operation — at least until other Marvel films such as “Captain America” and “Thor” get made (and, likewise, until Marvel figures out how to handle the Hulk). To a lesser actor, this seems like an insurmountable amount of pressure, but Downey remains level-headed, and like any good soldier, knows he’s got a job to do, knows he’s already got a solid team at his side, and looks forward to seeing how the other films will play into the “Avengers.”

“I think its important that I do what I’m supposed to do which is keep my side of the street clean,” said Downey. “The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is [director] Jon [Favreau] was very certain that ‘Iron Man’ should be set in a very realistic world. Nothing that happened in ‘Iron Man’ is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion.”

Louis Leterrier Officially In The Running To Assemble THE AVENGERS!

I just finished an interview with CLASH OF THE TITANS director Louis Leterrier, and, wouldn't you know it, the topic of him directing THE AVENGERS came up! Now, Leterrier has lobbied in the past for the gig, but I'm pretty sure today is the first time he's revealed that he is on Marvel Studios' official shortlist to helm the big superhero soiree geeks have been clamoring for since Nick Fury's surprise cameo at the end of IRON MAN.

Here's what he had to say:

"I am on the shortlist, but I'm at the bottom of the shortlist, I'm sure. (Laughs) I don't know who the other guys are, but I have a great relationship with [Marvel], and I've been very vocal to them and everyone else that I am the one to direct it. I loved my time at Marvel. I loved those guys. They're fantastic. Kevin is such a passionate boss; he gets his hands dirty. It's a universe I want to keep exploring. I was frustrated with [THE INCREDIBLE HULK]. It was like, "That's it? Only one superhero? Can I do more???" We'll see. Time will tell."

As for "the other guys" in the running, feel free to speculate. Jon Favreau took himself out of the running last October. Of the directors who've been directly involved in Marvel's run-up to THE AVENGERS, this leaves Leterrier, Kenneth Branagh (THOR) and Joe Johnston (THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA). I suppose you could include Edgar Wright (ANT-MAN) and Zak Penn (who's writing THE AVENGERS) as well. Any favorites out of that group? I have one, but I very selfishly don't want to lose him to franchise filmmaking. Also, he has a very specific style that might clash with Marvel's insistence on a somewhat cohesive sensibility.

Finally, there's the very real possibility that Marvel's shortlist includes a director or two who has yet to work with the studio.

In the meantime, Leterrier's CLASH OF THE TITANS will Bubo your brains out on April 2nd.

Whedon to head 'Avengers'



Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk will soon start taking orders from Joss Whedon.

Marvel Studios is wrapping up a deal for Whedon to helm "The Avengers," which assembles the superheroes in one pic on May 4, 2012, that Paramount will distrib. Whedon will also rework Zak Penn's script.

Whedon, a favorite among fanboys, most recently penned the script for "Cabin in the Woods," a horror pic that he is also producing for MGM. Pic co-stars Chris Hemsworth, who plays the hammer-wielding Thor.

The creator of series like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and more recently "Dollhouse," all for Fox, has been close to helming a superhero pic before, namely "Wonder Woman" for Joel Silver at Warner Bros., but Whedon wound up ankling the project due to creative issues.

He directed episodes of those series, and recently helmed an episode of Fox's "Glee." "Serenity" is his sole film directing credit. The sci-fi western, distribbed by Universal in 2005, was based on the short-lived "Firefly."

"The Avengers" extends Whedon's long relationship with Marvel. He wrote for the comicbook company's "Astonishing X-Men" series.

"The Avengers" would star Robert Downey Jr. (as Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Hemsworth (Thor) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). Edward Norton may also return as the Hulk.

"Iron Man 2" bows May 7, followed by "Thor" on May 6, 2011, and "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011. Paramount will distrib.

Downey Jr. Does His Avengers Homework

It looks like Robert Downey Jr. gave one comic book store clerk a day to remember. The "Iron Man" franchise actor was spotted buying both "Iron Man" and "Avengers" comics in Hollywood on Wednesday (June 2nd). It appears he's doing his homework for when he brings his Tony Stark/Iron Man to the set of Marvel Studios' The Avengers, which he'll film after shooting Sherlock Holmes 2.

EXCLUSIVE: Edward Norton is not the Hulk in 'The Avengers'... but he'd like to be

That’s the word from Hitfix, who cites “Marvel sources” as saying that the company have decided to part ways with Edward Norton as Bruce Banner aka the Hulk, and will instead be hiring an unknown to play the role for Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers”. Of course, like a lot of Marvel films nowadays, it’s all just conjecture and unnamed sources until the studio comes out and says it, and let’s face, there has been plenty — and I do mean plenty — of rushed “exclusive scoops” when it comes to Marvel movie casting, and this could very well be one of them.

Again, until Marvel makes it official via one of the trades, it’s just another Internet rumor, and should be treated as such.

What we do know is this: Robert Downey Jr. will definitely be playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth will definitely be playing Thor, Chris Evans is definitely Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson is definitely Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson is the Black Widow, and Jeremy Renner is most definitely Hawkeye.

The Hulk? Well, that’s up in the air. And in case you’re keeping count, if this turns out to be true, the Hulk will have gone through three actors since it resurfaced as a movie franchise in 2003. That is one confused superhero.

CONFIRMED: The Avengers Will be Assembling a New Hulk/Bruce Banner

Marvel Studios has confirmed  that Edward Norton won’t be reprising his role as The Hulk in “The Avengers”. This from Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige himself:

    "We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

Edward Norton’s agent Brian Swardstrom has responded  to Marvel’s decision to re-cast The Hulk in Joss Whedon’s upcoming “The Avengers”:

    "This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.

    We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Following Marvel Studios' president confirming Edward Norton not being involved in the upcoming "Avengers" movie and the actor's agent responding in a heavy statement, the man of the moment has released a high road statement on his FaceBook page involving the dispute.

As most of you know, I don't like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience's fullest enjoyment of the 'magic' that films can have. But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won't work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in "The Avengers." I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone but it hasn't turned out as we all hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk's long and excellent history. And I really can't thank the fans enough for how much enthusiasm you've sent me way about what Louis and I tried to do in our turn with the legend. It means a lot to me. I grew up with Banner and Hulk and have been a fan of every incarnation. I'm really proud, and very blessed, to have been one of them and will be thrilled to see him live on through other actors. Hulk is bigger than all of us, that's why we love him, right?

Mark Ruffalo to Play Hulk in The Avengers?



We're guessing that Marvel Studios was hoping to announce this at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 24th, but Deadline is reporting that the studio is in "late-stage discussions" with Mark Ruffalo to play The Incredible Hulk in The Avengers, scheduled to hit theaters on May 4, 2012.

He would be replacing Edward Norton, who played Hulk in director Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk. Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and Norton both confirmed this week that he would not be returning for The Avengers.

Hulk Rumors to be Joaquin Phoenix



If rumors are going to be true, then, Joaquin Phoenix might not be making a bad decision if he’d jump on the role that Ed Norton was reportedly fired from as Bruce Banner/Incredible Hulk.

As opposed to his rapping career this might guarantee more positive audience reaction to the younger brother of the late 80’s child actor, River Phoenix.

It was in 2009 when Joaquin, formerly credited as Leaf Phoenix in his early works, announced he would be leaving the movies to pursue a rapping career.  After a very laughable admission and painstakingly humiliating publicity concerning his hip hop aspirations conflicting reports surfaced on whether this was a put-on or not. But if the supposed-to-be-documentary of Joaquin, 35, as he leaves his acting career and goes on to pursue the hip hop scene is an indication he might as well leave this desire of his and accept the fact that he can only settle on his talents as an actor, music video director and producer.
