is there any effect on the card if run at 70'C idle temp all the time... sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

The 8-series cards (esp the higher end ones) are made to withstand up to 100c temperatures (and more). GPU's in general have a far higher tolerance to heat as compared to CPUs.

QUOTE(eusioxn @ Aug 27 2007, 11:24 AM)
wow, ur card is HOT man....

'Hot' yes in the literal sense, but not 'Hot' as in there's something wrongggggg.

I  have tried downclocking it to like 250MHz core but the temperature reduction is not by much, only -5'C or so.

Mine runs at full 512/792 even at desktop mode, cant they make 2D/3D clocks to run independantly to save energy cost.

@obefiend
Unless you force the fan to go at 100% duty cycle, 70'C idle temp is perfectly normal for me, which is my idle temp during 60% duty cycle.
Now forcing 100% duty cycle, idle temp is 57-61'C depending on room temperature. i.e. 57'C @ 28.5'C, 61'C @ 31'C
*
Some reduction in temperature is not bad. I'm just thinking that these nice card should not be running at full speed even at 2D mode!!! No doubt the lifespan won't be much different but I think downclocking the card for 2D use is a good practice. Imagine having a 8800 GTS/GTX running full speed 24/7 but using the rig for bittorrent!!! rclxub.gif

Anyway, I'm going to find out more about downclocking the 8800 GTS..... even now, my rig is at idle (running folding, idle GC) but the GC is running at an unnecessary full speed setting of 512/792..... rclxub.gif

At work now, going to find a stable downclock when I get home....... smile.gif

Sure. smile.gif

Remember that previous generations of GC has lower 2D settings and higher 3D settings. I just can't understand why the newest generation can't do that!!! doh.gif

Going to ask Nvidia about this, looks like they have a forum at their website too.... nod.gif

Go ahead and pick 100 8800GTS cards. I'm pretty sure if there is no 100% manual fan speed overwrite via 3rd party software, all cards runs at 70'C++ idle temperature.

can't understand what u trying to say here... most 8800gts idle at around 60'c with adequate ventilation... u can use rivatuner to set the fan at watever speed u want... it's in low level setting...

wrong and wrong and wrong...

running 8800gts (621/2016) with 'idle' at 65dC (fan at default 60%)

note there is technically no 2d mode for vista, hence the 'idle' mode is actually running at speed above

Apparently, the 8800GTS only need a 400w PSU (I guess must be a good brand with proper TRUE power version) with the 12v rail at least 26A. I'm using an enermax liberty 500w and no problems so far..... icon_idea.gif

If the 8700 will double sp and bus width i think it should beat HD2950PRO.

Right, this is what I have tried on my 8800 GTS.

Downclock both 2D/3D setting (together) using rivatuner
Setting 1 : Stock core/mem : 513/792mhz, fan speed at 80%
Setting 2 : Downclock core/mem : 300/400 mhz, fan speed at 50%

I'm using rivatuner launcher to either set it to setting 1 (using F9 key) and setting 2 (using F10 key).

This way, when I'm in GC idle mode, e.g. surfing, folding...., I'll just press F9 key and Setting 2 will be set.
If I wanna play games, I'll just press F10 key and Setting 1 will be set. smile.gif

So far, the downclocking is stable. I can even play 3D games at full setting on that speed!!! No problems switching from setting 1 to 2 or vice versa.... sweat.gif

The reason I'm not setting the 2D and 3D separately is because I need to find out whether there would be any problems if it the GC automatically rev up from 2D settings to 3D settings. Already posted in Nvidia forum by no good replies yet. Might just email customer support if I don't get any answers..... wink.gif

yo kmarc...i read ur topic in the nvidia forums....

about the fan speed thingy....u can check out the first post. theres a link there to an 8800 fan speed guide.

i did it and it works....the steps are a little tedious...but it still works.
