Review
Camera vs A1 Feel like 5 Pro slightly sharper and better dynamic with color rendering. But notice 5 Pro noise control not as good as A1. Overall still accepted. This post has been edited by Benefon: Feb 14 2018, 08:05 PM |

India claim the most powerful processor in midrange smartphone, but the downside still comes with micro USB.

Just launched in India. They got 2 variants: Redmi Note 5 & Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Redmi Note 5 basically is Redmi 5 Plus, just change the name only. Redmi Note 5 Pro is the only one real successor of Redmi Note 4. Now wait and see what's the price when it comes to here. Probably more than RM1000. |

It's been a while I haven't touched Xiaomi phone. My last Xiaomi phones are Mi3 & Redmi Note 2. QC2.0 and QC3.0 doesn't differs in terms of charging speed. It's just QC3.0 is have more voltage and amperage steps to have more efficient charging. Both had the same maximum charging wattage so they will charge at the same rate if both are charging at highest possible wattage. However QC2.0 only had 3 steps so if the phone started to heat up excessively, it would lower the wattage significantly but QC3.0 had much more steps so wattage doesn't decrease by much so provided if the temperature is ideal, both should be similar charging time taken.Saying QC3.0 is faster than QC2.0 is only partially right. |

I think the problem is not whether we can wait or not but whether Mi Malaysia will bring in this model? As you all noticed, even can't get this Pro model in China.
Do you think DirectD going to bring in this? The ROM should be "Global" for Indian market, I think? Then there should not have the faked ROM issue. |

QUOTE(ASoulNamedLeo @ Feb 14 2018, 08:57 PM) Nah, I would take the Mi Note 3 over the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Mi note 3 no IP67 water ressistance... of course the buld quality far better than Redmi seriesThe Redmi Note 5 Pro, a phone with Snapdragon 636, micro USB, worse dual camera setup compared to Meizu M6 Note, and no water resistance, when imported to Malaysia will cost a lot and that will the make the phone more expensive compared to the Mi Note 3, a phone with a Snapdragon 660, USB Type C, better dual camera setup(scored 90 marks on DxOMark) and IP67 water resistance. |

The 18:9 screen, dual lens camera and front camera flash and all is certainly nice but I think I'll wait for the A1 successor.
Stock android is kinda a must for maximum smoothness and future android updates. Hope they would include a nice 18:9 screen, flash for the front camera, ip6x water resistance and bigger battery. Don't mind paying more! |

QUOTE(Max2006 @ Feb 15 2018, 12:31 AM) If you don't play games and don't mind the quality of the camera, then just go for the Redmi 5 Plus. But if these 2 factors are important to your usage, then better wait for Redmi Note 5 Pro. That's how I look at it. Always choose the one that suits your need the most. Yup! I seldom play game, even if I do, I play mostly 2D puzzle games. I'm not really care about the camera that much because about 70% of photos in my gallery are product samples, static objects etc... After breaking up all these, I think 4GB RAM version of Redmi 5 Plus should be enough for me, really don't know the reason or what is the point of those "extra capabilities" for my usage. |

It's meaningless to argue about the camera. Redmi Note 5 Pro is still in Redmi line, thus the camera will not up to what we expected it should be.

Damn right. Redmi phones are budget phones. Redmi note 5 pro is a good phone, but it's not a great phone. If you want better camera and better specs, then Redmi phone is clearly not for you. So guys, please stop condemning why Redmi note pro 5 don't have great camera, why don't have type - c etc. It is what it is. Like it, buy it. Don't like it, then go buy other phone. As simple as that. |

anandtech says this chip is 4xa73+4xa53, is like slower version of 660. Samsung can close shop in india i think...
Also samsung's quick charger is qc 2.0 compatible if i'm not mistaken. Maybe will work with this. This post has been edited by donthitmyface: Feb 16 2018, 05:07 PM |

Yes, the EIS aka DIS is impressive... nevertheless, focus pulsing / hunting still plague all Snap6xx series... it's a big improvement for vix recording overall from Xiaomi...

Redmi Note 5/ Redmi 5+ looks pointless now. If they limit 2 from each Redmi and Redmi note series, they would have much more resource to focus on software support.
And really disappointed in micro usb choice. This post has been edited by UnknownH: Feb 20 2018, 05:28 PM |

It really is 4xa73+4xa53. This is a weaker version of 660. Looks like a sd650 that won't burn you if you play game. And the camera is good apparently. I think price sure rm1k + if official warranty. But so far no news it launch in china lol. This post has been edited by donthitmyface: Feb 21 2018, 12:13 PM |

When Note 5 is released, will Note 4 and Note 4x as they are now around price RM550-600, will drop below 500?
I remembered Redmi Note 3 didn't drop much below 550, during its near end of stock. |

India has a bigger markets than china markets will sell on taobao or AliExpress. Now it's hard time to get from India. To be honest like India made ,not easy to buy parts or LCD screen from any else. If it's accidentally drop on the floors. Unlike china assembly still able to get from AliExpress for all those parts.. This post has been edited by Benefon: Feb 23 2018, 08:51 AM |

Redmi Note 5 Pro or Mi Note 3?
Mi Note 3 have better SoC (SD660) Mi Note 3 have USB-C Both have good camera - do not know the difference until there is comparison Redmi Note 5 Pro is cheaper (speculation since it is not here yet) I am moving towards Redmi Note 5 Pro cause I don't care about USB-C (have lots of micro usb cable) and the cheaper price which I projected. Hope they have global ROM version. This post has been edited by abubin: Feb 23 2018, 02:23 PM |

QUOTE(abubin @ Feb 23 2018, 12:03 PM) Redmi Note 5 Pro or Mi Note 3? lol??? RN5pro better camera??? Mi Note 3 have better SoC (SD660) Mi Note 3 have USB-C Redmi Note 5 Pro have better camera Redmi Note 5 Pro is cheaper (speculation since it is not here yet) I am moving towards Redmi Note 5 Pro cause I don't care about USB-C (have lots of micro usb cable) and the cheaper price which I projected. Hope they have global ROM version. currently Redmi 5 plus 4+64GB RM899 RN5Pro price surely more than RM1K++... top up RM100++ can get Mi note 3 d |

I am moving towards Redmi Note 5 pro because it is top selling in India which means there will be a lot of thirdparty ROM support in the future. Also more likely to get ability to root the phone. I think Xiaomi need to stop releasing so many phone models. This Redmi Note 5 Pro is almost the same as Mi Note 3 and Mi 6. They only will saturated their own market further and adding more work for their MiUI team to update firmware for the various models. That is why you see Samsung never update their low to mid range phones. They only update firmware (android version) for their high end models.

Mi 6 still in higher performance range. Note 5 Pro for high performance in midrange. Xiaomi have their market strategy , they always focusing to everyone needs. Can be cheap until high-end price range. If you are the Xiaomi fag, you will following what is the latest Xiaomi products in the market so far. The bad thing was phone price too cheap and lot of choices until you get confused. Samsung like you got money come to buy me. |

My point is, they release too many models until they don't have time to support the firmware. Look at redmi note 3. They promise Oreo for it but until now still no Oreo support.

I skipped RN4 because i think the 5th would have major changes. So far Redmi Note 5 Pro satisfies the specs and budget. Lucky i saw the launch of this rn5 pro coz i almost wanted to buy Nova 2i. |

Xiaomi snapdragon phones, you will get 1 android update then they update their os for around 3 years. Redmi 1s finally get their last miui update with 9. You compare huawei, get 1 android update thats it. Samsung supposedly j series get update now, I know in the past 0 updates for budget series. I think my friend's j7+ only august or september security patch, redmi note 3 is january patch. Don't just listen to the websites complain, furthermore miui 9 update speed up the phone by a lot. I tried before custom rom on that phone can't feel the supposed faster aosp, the same only. Official lineage os actually slower. You can feel miui kill app early to keep os smooth, lineage wait until no more ram to kill so it become laggy like the old android. |

I'm prettt sure that Xiaomi didn't promise Oreo for that particular model or even hint about it. It's only the forumer keep spamming we want Oreo or petition. |

If Xiaomi want to keep price below RM1k, SD625/636 is the best until SD700 series become available.. At that time SD660 is the best SoC below RM1k |

So not sure what's the cause of it. I've reset my phone and it's still the same. |

News said China's version (which will be brought into Malaysia market soon) will have different camera spec compared to India's version. Not sure it's better spec or weaker spec.

QUOTE(Oldskolboyz @ Mar 1 2018, 11:54 PM) Who care about GSMarena's news while they always copied other sources without any verification. When we talk about Xiaomi news, always refer to Xiaomi official weibo (twitter in China). It represents Xiaomi official, so their announcement is the most accurate one. In Xiaomi official weibo, they posted a poll and asked the people to vote which part of phone spec they wish to have surprise. The result is not important. The one we should concern about is the hint that given by the Xiaomi official. Apparently, Xiaomi official voted the camera. Indirectly telling us that there's a surprise on the camera performance of the upcoming Redmi Note 5 Pro China version. If you ask me which one to believe, of course I will always trust their official twitter. This post has been edited by Max2006: Mar 2 2018, 12:36 AM Attached thumbnail(s) |

Telco engineering expert may have the answer lolBut again i went to bangkok before cny my GPS lock within seconds and have no issue at all For many random cases, Xiaomi and Redmi series GPS works properly initially, but after a while or some time later, erratic behaviour come. |

For me a decent option for custom roms is a plus and both brands seem to have similar level of community support. i own few xiaomi product, phone, tablet and camera, cctv... etcthe product quality is below average... mostly hardware problem... eg screen yellowish, wifi chip ko, power chip ko, phone+charger+cable burn, battery swollen... and speaking of custom roms, xiaomi hv really bad reputation in releasing oss kernel... (recent case A1 aka android one no source code) compared to asus, it hv excellent reputation in xda community |

QUOTE(lucaswjk @ Mar 2 2018, 11:54 PM) mayb u r right... Just what sort of problems did you actually face by device model?but how many units u bought, i bought ~15units... im speaking from statistically, not 1 2 units experienced lucky few of the unit is under original warranty hehe mayb my luck still not tat bad The yellowish screen is a known qc issue for some Xiaomi phones but I don't think Xiaomi is above the industry average for wifi/power ic failures. There are many teardown reviews for Xiaomi products and they consistently show quite good quality/design for the selling price without cutting too many corners and defintely not on components that impact consumer safety. Some of the problems on Xiaomi phones may be due to an unstable power grid which is common in India or using poor quality chargers. Or custom roms that overclocks the cpu and kills the phone by overheating. And theres the issue of Xiaomi fakes. |

QUOTE(zher4883 @ Mar 5 2018, 10:28 AM) USB type C is reversible and much more durable than Micro USB. Other than that, USB tyoe C comes with USB-PD standard. well, that is hardly a deal breaker, isn't it?I think for it's price, the good things you get from it far outweight that usb-c. For example, given the choice of good camera vs usb-c, I would choose good camera. |

QUOTE(abubin @ Mar 5 2018, 06:35 PM) well, that is hardly a deal breaker, isn't it? It's indeed not a deal breaker. But for some people, using old technology in year 2018 is not acceptable. I guess at the end it's a matter of preference. For me, I can go both way. But since already get used to USB type C, need to be extra careful when using micro usb cable. Don't want to spoil the charging port because pluggin in the wrong way. I think for it's price, the good things you get from it far outweight that usb-c. For example, given the choice of good camera vs usb-c, I would choose good camera. |

RN5 SD625 a.k.a R5Plus, our market had 6 variants from 2GB till 4GB & memory from 16GB till 64GB. QUOTE(Smackers @ Mar 7 2018, 04:32 PM) Tax? Malaysia customs is pretty loose with the taxes and it is very unlikely for officer to hold your parcel for taxes as it is small and the value declared is low. Since the parcel is small, they will usually believe the value declared on the parcel. They are more interested in larger parcel usually >10KG or high declared value parcel.Have been buying phones from Aliexpress and none of it slapped with taxes before. |

QUOTE(zher4883 @ Mar 7 2018, 09:27 PM) Tax? Malaysia customs is pretty loose with the taxes and it is very unlikely for officer to hold your parcel for taxes as it is small and the value declared is low. Since the parcel is small, they will usually believe the value declared on the parcel. They are more interested in larger parcel usually >10KG or high declared value parcel. any idea how to get phone from aliexpress ya? I check on the page...the seller able to declare the item in low price.... Have been buying phones from Aliexpress and none of it slapped with taxes before. |

Just order it and make a payment. If you use DHL, you will very likely get slapped with tax. Other method risk are so low that it is almost non-existence. Hong Kong Goldway, Dreami are two sellers that had very good reputation. Although they are slightly more expensive but their service made up for it. |

I think there is another option now HTC U ULTRA with snapdragon 821 cost RM1.1K only still cheaper then mi note 3.... the camera is powerful enough too |

If you are still not sure if they are legit then wait for the phone to launch over here or buy from importers here in Lazada. You still have your phone to use, right? No need to rush. I don't understand why people have to rush to get new techs. So you are number one, and then? Can fly? |

Using any form of quick charge already increase the rate of battery worn out. Furthermore, the phone will not allow more current than it can do so to prevent damage. Whether to use which charger is up to your choice. |

12 more hours to the launch.
But here's the leaked spec. No need to ask where's the sos. Xiaomi's boss Lei Jun sendiri "bongkar" punya. So ya. IT'S THE REAL DEAL. SD 636, 6GB Ram, 4000 mAh, AI dual rear camera, AI front camera with portrait mode and face unlock. Front camera 13MP, rear camera (main) 1.4um, 2PD-PDAF The camera part indeed is different with the India spec. This post has been edited by Max2006: Mar 16 2018, 10:12 AM Attached thumbnail(s) |

I will get the 3gb version. Good enough for me as it's my secondary phone.
The seems to focus a lot on the camera feature which is a good thing as all the previous redmi phones have lousy camera and that is the number one complain for most users! This post has been edited by abubin: Mar 16 2018, 03:09 PM |

Smartisan nut pro 2 also come with sd 660 at 4+64 around the similar price range, with a much better look and clean design. |

The Chinese ROM imitates iPhone X gestures....
Hoping the iPhone X gestures will be baked into the global ROM too... In the meantime, my hypothesis for the 4/64GB variant should be RM899 (early bird) and RM949 (SRP), i.e. to be at par with Meizu M6 Note (local manufacturer warranty) : Let the waiting game begins... |

QUOTE(Emo_Boy @ Mar 17 2018, 09:21 PM) micro USB bro.... The key is the "Timing". If they bring late then there will be more competitors will come into the market with better pricing and similar/better specs. Look at Nova 2i and Redmi 5 (3/32). Price drop quite fast even just after launch not for long. Even own brand also compete among themselves (Huawei vs Honor vs Others). I believe if RN5P arrived then R5/5+ price will be pressured too.but china set more attractive... with f1.9 big lens... not sure directD will bring china or india set.... hopefully china unit support global rom |

Any news so far regarding its release in Malaysia? Late March / early April possible?
Mi Malaysia keeps saying 'soon' I'm not sure if that means months or weeks. /.\ |

QUOTE(Smackers @ Mar 20 2018, 07:30 AM) Won't have any risk from AliExpress, they have sold a plenty of reviews.I bought my Mi Mix 2 white from them. If they slower to ship out or no stock can refund as well. But 415 SGD not consider as cheap for pre-order. The advantages for Chinese ROM, no headache like they installed fake global rom for you. |

QUOTE(xperiaVuser @ Mar 20 2018, 10:29 PM) Interesting, the samsung sensor spec is still better than the sony; bigger sensor size + dual PD focus. Let's wait for proper reviews. I believe if they will ever use Sony sensor in it, it will be Sony IMX 362 which has exactly the same specs as the Samsung S5K2L7.Definitely not the IMX 486 as in RN5pro india version. Xiaomi is known to use different sensor in different batch, but they always use ones with same specs. Edited: In Meizu m6 Note specs, it says "camera sensor could be either Sony IMX362 or Samsung 2L7". So i believe my theory is true lol This post has been edited by ashraf095: Mar 20 2018, 11:01 PM |

Haven't read through all the previous pages -- wondering if the latest versions have dual active SIM. The first page description said only 3G voice calls on second SIM.

I read some unhappy experiences from online buyers eg. missing product, hard to claim if product defect but to be fair, most of the buyers were giving positive reviews to major sellers. I bought few products from Aliexpress before but it's all less expensive items and so far not much problem (Only delivery time might be longer). |

No doubt the camera quality has improved but I doubt it can compete with iphone X. For example, look at the good initial reviews on the camera on Redmi Note 3. After I got it, I can say it's like shit. Worst that my old iphone 5. If you have no friends and only take pictures of inanimate objects then Redmi Note 3 have good camera. LOL...I saw on youtube they even compare it with iphone X.... and given the price, now cannot say mi series is for high end and redmi series is middle range budget phone anymore.... LZD have 6/64 variant at 12XX .... so fast bring in the high spec. I also noted the lowest variant 4/32 at 899 which I doubt it as far as I know only 3/32 is available at this moment.

Got la. Some more it's QC3.0. The only problem is they don't provide you a QC charger in the box. You need to buy one on your own. |

QUOTE(yao_mou_gao_cho @ Mar 27 2018, 01:44 PM) For China phone review, I prefer to watch Chinese review. Sometimes western reviewers may not familiar with China phone, so they may have no idea what they are talking about. I watched a lot reviews directly from its origin China, I can guarantee you that redmi note 5 China variant does support QC 3.0. This post has been edited by Max2006: Mar 27 2018, 04:23 PM |

QUOTE(xperiaVuser @ Mar 27 2018, 05:31 PM) Haha. What to do? China is the origin of redmi, of course they would keep the good stuff to themselves. At first, I did envy that India Since they got the phone first. But now after the China variant launch, no need to envy liao. China variant FTW! Just hope that the one that bring into our market is the China variant. This post has been edited by Max2006: Mar 27 2018, 07:06 PM |

Initial energy stats:
"We were able to achieve a good battery rating for this unit since its a Snapdragon (Qualcomm is known for their battery efficiency), we lasted a day on normal usage without hitting the charging port or power bank. PC Mark Battery Stress Test rated it at 14 hours 1 minute SOT, which is quite impressive already for a new SoC in the market, this is 2 hours more than the Redmi Note 5 Pro which lasted for 12 hours on the same battery stress test. Now we have tested the charging time, we were able to charge from 20% to 100% within 1 hour and 39 minutes as we monitored it closely while charging. The maximum ampere that we have achieved is 2510mAh on a QC 3.0 charger supplied with the Mi 6, therefore this debunks the claim that this unit supports QC 3.0 charging." Lots of sample pix in this initial review too.... Source : xiaomi-miui.gr Conclusion :For 4,000mAh energy supply having 14 hours SoT is really impressive by looking at Snap636 over Snap625.... even my LeMoto P2 which has 5,100mAh only can get 17 hours for the same PC Mark Battery Stress Test... |

Nope they are selling China version. Xiaomi does not provide details in english for RN5 China version, yet. So they simply use the RN5pro's one. |
