Hi everyone,

I’ve been riding Virago 535 for quite sometime now and thinking to buy a new bike with budget around 20k. The bike will be a weekend ride. Currently I am looking at used Ducati 796 (or maybe 795?) and new zx25r

Any input or opinion for the two bikes above?

Thanks

Ducati - have u researched on maintenance costs of the ducati, especially the desmo? have u researched on the reliability? have u researched on parts costs? have u researched on workshops for the bike? if ur ok with the costs etc, then these can be very good bike.

ZX25R - doubt u can get one at 20k..these bikes brand new is over 30k. older Ninja 250 yeah...the twin pots.. but not the 4pot. also i think this bike is a waste of money as they are too expensive for a 250cc and ur paying extra RM10k just for the sound doh.gif

i think for ur budget, perhaps a z800 would be better. get inline 4, power, looks, etc. just make the one u buy has had its valves changed to the ABS version or Z750 version...or u can buy one n do it urself.

thats quite a leap going from cruiser to sporty naked.
have you tried the 795 and 796? they are pretty but they are freaking hot since they are air-cooled ducati v-twin and their maintenance should be higher than virago because of desmo.
though i think you can do it yourself now since there are plenty of guide online and if you know where to buy the parts.

as for zx25r, its not for everyone so test ride one first and see if you actually like it.
it has nice sound yes but thats it.

if you are looking for modern cruiser, theres cfmoto clc450, voge cu525, honda rebel 500, kawasaki vulcan 650.
you want naked? theres kawasaki z650, cfmoto clx700, suzuki gsr750, triumph street triple 675 (or the 765 if you are lucky you can find one around 25k+).

plenty of options just have to specify what you are looking in your next bike

first, I think would help to know why you want to buy the new bike?
looking for something more thrilling?

Ducati - you don't start for a few days, can have electrical issues one
796 and 795 are quite different, but heed the warnings about maintenance cost, it might end up spending more time in a garage, these are better as a daily bike, less issue, but still higher maintenance

ZX25R - there's the old ones from the 80's
4 titanium valves for each 62.5cc (250cc / 4) engine cylinder, will also be high maintenance
the powerband at screaming RPM will be fun, for 2~4 months

The monster and the zx25 are very different types of bikes with very drastically different powerbands and riding characteristics. Care to share why you would be looking at these 2 bikes? Would seem odd for a Virago rider to jump into a zx25r.

Consider a Suzuki SV 650 if you want something similar to a Monster without the dukahati baggage. They are actually running a run out promo of 30k for a new SV650. Used ones probably close to your budget.

If you are on a tighter budget, do consider maintenance requirements and cost. They can be significant on some bikes, leading to lower resale values, and hence the temptation to get them. Expensive bikes that are cheap are cheap for a reason.

Anyone riding a ktm390 duke? Thinking to get one as it’s light and agile enough. Rode a shiver previously. Not sure if parts are hard to get here for ktm since the liquidation news is out.

Alternatives welcomed, budget 15-20k used. Out of the loop with bike news for a while.

What happened with the shiver that made you want to get lower cc bike?

Cheapest 400cc bike you can get is probably dominar but its not exactly lightweight.
IMO kawasaki z650 would be best if you want reliability + lightweight.
Aanother one is suzuki sv650, that will require luck to find used around 20k.
I've seen some mt07 slightly above 20k but no ABS.
China bike option, benelli leoncino 500 and cfmoto 700 clx

Don't think theres much option in that price range if you want light and agile bike.

Some other choices if you don't mind the weight and lack of ABS:
- honda cb650f
- yamaha xj6
- kawasaki z800

Minor crash and got written off for the shiver. Just fork and radiator damage but parts were expensive, they didn’t wanna fix it. I can get another shiver but parts are ex and rare so I’ll skip getting another unit.

Reason why just a smaller bike is because I may want to allocate some funds for a sports bike for proper track riding and keep a lightweight but zippy bike for commutes (even maxi scooters is being considered at the moment).

Z650 will look into it. Ridden one before but it’s been ages since then.
MT07 holding its value too well, I don’t feel it’s worth the price tbh.
China options also in view, but I’ve lost touch so thanks for the reccs, will look into it.

Z800 too heavy, tried and tested. 650f is okay too, smth to explore. Xj6 price point is a bit high for the bike.

Any new launches on cafe racers/cruisers from the past 3 years worth looking at?
Was interested in the trident but seems like it’s rare on the used market.

New cruiser around 20k worth looking is probably cfmoto 450 clc.
Other than that the usual used ones like honda rebel 500 and kawasaki vulcan 650.

No issue with parts for the 390. Are u talking a used one or the new 25 model?

You can get from shopee quite easily. Alternatively get dominar 400 parts.

Daily is ok. Longer distance less so. Bike can get viby past 6000rpm which is where you cruise at.

The old one. 2nd version.

Okay, if parts are fine then might go with it. How's reliability?

Just know this.

KTMs are built for a good time. Not for a long time.

The 390s are one of the highest output in it's class/cc, makes more heat than anyone else.

The smaller KTMs are all coming out of India anyway, so make off it what you will.

Reliability depends on luck, your own maintenance, how gentle you are with the bike and what you are benchmarking against.

What conclusions you draw on this is up to you.

Just saying, my KTM 390 based Indian Bajaj Dominar 400 has 70k on it and has very very few problems... Far less than my new china KTM 790 based bike.

shares many part with Dominar 400. They look cool, sounds good and rides fun. Personally, I won’t touch it unless t is very very cheap.
