I have more bullets
I have some emergency money saved up, and I am expected to receive at least 1.5 months bonus this month
Should I put in now ? Or wait until it drops further ?
Wanna do it before eUT 0% SC promo ends

After the year end promo, there will be CNY promo ( based on history ). But perhaps there will be gaps in between. wink.gif

Since you have lots of bullets, you should just buy directly from eUT. No need to sell. People sell to lock in profits not because of downtrend. As said, by selling during downtrend, congratulations, you just lock in your losses.

Market drop + eUT promo = double win rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

This year has been exceptionally good more ups than down. We all agree many stocks are all time high. Tech stock is currently leading the selloff because their evaluation is so high. These investment arms are actualizing their profit. Else it is just paper value.

But i think this has started a chain reaction, maybe causing more people to panic sell. today looks like a bloodbath for asia.

I think a lot of retail investors are selling... just looking for any excuse to take everythng off the table before their X'mas/year-end holidays for several weeks. Pension funds would be locking in their profits for the year.

As to whether it is a normal annual occurence, I don't think so. Normally December is a strong month and November usually seems to more turbulence.

Normally there's the year-end window dressing during the last week of the year... when fund managers would sell high volatile stocks in exchange for more popular large-caps stable stocks such that the annual financial reports would not show the riskier volatile stocks they have 'gambled on' in search of higher returns.

Some would suggest buying the more agressive volatile funds (like IDS or 'normal' small-caps funds) in the last week of the year, as the funds will reposition back their money into these volatile stocks in the beginning of the year.

Hmm...Actually why those retail investors are selling during drop? hmm.gif Stock investors should follow the same methodology right? Buy low, sell high? hmm.gif

It is a painful drop only when the purchases were done in the recent months. To those who were having the stocks or funds since the beginning of the year, the YTD gains are still sky high... time to take holiday.

============

Add on...

Long term UT investors don't have the same view point of stock investors... especially in those in the beginning stage when they are building up their investments. Buy low, sell high? No. It is buy, buy, and more buy regardless of the market trend... ala DCA investment strategy.

For a long term UT investors who is building up the fund to supplement his retirement income, he will be holding onto the portfolio and only trimming the yearly profits for income...

For a shorter term UT investor, it is also regardless of the market... the market is secondary to the investment objective... he would sell when the objective is reached and when he needs the money.

In short, stock investors might follow "buy low, sell high". UT investors don't.

(Retail investors are individuals who purchases stocks for themselves. They are not UT investors. Sometimes it is not easy to reply when the original query contradicts itself and not sure which direction to take in the reply.)

I would add on that the purchasing should be out of the monthly salary for those who are just starting.

I sometimes wonder where the money comes from when someone asked what do do with the sum of money they have, sometimes 20k or 50k. Winnings from 4d or take years to save...

If the money is from monthly savings, why suddenly so impatient to invest the savings? Kept it for many donkey years and suddenly discovered that there are better investments with higher returns than FD? smile.gif

As this week's markets sell-off shows, the downturn can wipe out all the profits from purchases done in the past 2 months... now moving back and hitting all the top-ups/purchases in the past 3 months... this is when the pain is felt, especially so when the bulk of the savings were used up in the recent several months.

If only the beginner had discovered UT funds earlier, and invest bit-by-bit as they save...

Investors are “locking in profits earlier than usual for the year and not opening any new positions,” said Andrew Clarke, director of trading at Mirabaud (Asia) Ltd. “Eventually, as profit taking subsides, buying for the new year will appear as people look toward 2018.”

Don't panic. Prepare bullets. This is my opinion. Still my heart aches as my profits are wiped out.

Don't have much advice to contribute but only anecdotes.

This is most likely a period of profit taking. my main retirement port experienced various turbulent seasons (once -10% from peak) but again and again it's achieved new high, as it is currently. Continue to trust in diversification as my other non equity ports are all generating healthy returns.

I've stopped checking my fsm port for the time being and just riding out this storm. I just topped up a huge sum of money before this current dip so u can imagine my pain. Still I'm not pulling out as the recovery, when it comes, will be swift. Best thing now is to continue topping up as I will be in the coming weeks.

You should be buying some asia pacific or china funds as they have been dropping. India drop is not as bad as china/hong kong/asia funds.

At the end is your call.
