that's the difference between having a father who is already a sportsmen and also having the right financial backings...

you must be hoping there was a ban on team orders back then wouldn't you... haha...

U shud've seen the hammering Joo Ngan gave Edwin after that loss. Sometimes I pity him. He had to ride all 5 events in the track (Individual pursuit, team pursuit, sprints, kilo & points race), manages to win like 2-3 of them most of the time. I think his father was too hard on him... in the end, Edwin never did have any impact outside of Malaysia, not even Sea Games.... but he was talented that guy... & strong too...

Depends on how fast U can turn the pedals... in terms of gear inches, of course there are differences...

so if i were to race on a flat road with a human on a 10 speeder. And i pedal twice faster than him, with a 8 speeder, i can still keep up with him?
What about gear inches?

Kinda yes, but you'll need to count the number of cogs on both the chainring and the cassette to be more accurate.

You're likely to be going far faster than the 10 speeder on your 8 speeder if you're to pedal twice as fast as him

As I said, it depends on how fast Ur pedalling, & which cog Ur using. A 10 speed system was designed to allow for an extra lower gear or higher gear. For example, with an 8 speed system, it's very rare to have an 11T smallest cog, 12T or 13T would be the norm. That's the purpose of having more cog in the cassette, to have a wider range of gearing. Even if the other guy have a 10speed system, if he's only using 53x16 & Ur on an 8speed also using 53x16, would there be any difference ? If Ur pedalling twice as fast as he is, then U can beat him no matter which gear U use....

How often does one uses 11T or 12T in a ride ? Most proly only when sprinting & descending. The gear U proly be using most of the time is the midrange cogs, maybe 15-17T. so it doesn't really matter. But if the 10speed guy starts to use his 11T or 12T, if U only have 13T as Ur highest gear, then U'll be in trouble edi, assuming that U can pedal at the same speed as he is. Becoz U can no longer upshift.

that is what most parents are nowadays.. expect their kids to be able to excel in anything they have in plan for them... let alone when you have one heck of an example in your father...

i guess he looks to be contempt with what he is doing now or at least he looks like it... despite having married, he still is quite a good athlete... i think he took part in the last ironman langkawi or the one before the last and also did the KOM in frasers... got 2nd or something like that in his class...

the 12 - 25 is an 8 speed cassette?

anyways... if you notice that a 8-9-10 speed cassette having similar tooth on the highest and lowest gear... the difference is you get closer gear ratios in between... this is true irregardless of the lowest and highest gearing onthe cassette...

with closer ratios, you find that you have less cadence fluctuations when shifting up or down a gear.. while like my 11-32T wide range cassette... it is constantly very hard for me to find the right gear on flat roads... my cadence rises and reduces by quite a lot when i shift gears... hard to find rhythm on top of having sudden pedal load changes...

i believe the speed difference is not too big on an 8-9-10 speed cassette.... and you won't need to pedal and twice the revolutions to achieve same speed... if someone hammers on the flats at 100rpms to achieve 60kph... takkan you have to do 200rpms to get 60kps on an 8-speed rite? no logic...

the most is you have some 10-15-revolutions higher due to gearing difference or you have a heavier low gear...

Problems with cycling (from my POV)

1) TIME - the number 1 problem for my case..and I plan to get either a trainer or a roller to compensate for this problem..just so my butt will familiar itself with the saddle more often rather than once a week..i got quoted a minoura around rm280..not sure which model..but i'm afraid it will hurt the bike frame..googled a lot and the opinions contradict each other (some said it ok some said not ok)

2) SUN - not a problem to me..i wore arm warmers..need to get leg warmers as well

3) RAIN- i haven't ride in rainy weather yet..later have to wash and clean..im too lazy for that hmm.gif

4) COMMUNITY - hard to get regular cycling buddies to agree on a ride session. some cancel last minute some put cycling session not at the highest priority..and I agree with butthead about having a connection with the LBS will definitely helps..the guys at pedalspot always ask me to join them wed night at Kesas everytime I came to their shop..anybody had followed them before?

5) SAFETY - ok this is also very important..I'm planning to ride to those kampung2 road...probably hulu langat..or any suggested place for good cycling environment with less traffic? I don't intend to go to Dragon Back route anymore lorries are everywhere over there (sg buloh) vmad.gif

talking about online networking activity..maybe all of us here in this thread can do a ride together? a fun ride should be ok laugh.gif

1) try 6am in the morning smile.gif

3) cleaning the bike after riding in the rain is nothing. you should try cleaning the bike after riding off road when it rained heavily the night before smile.gif

4) Kesas is a very popular route. A lot of groups ride there

5) You can try the highways at the Putrajaya and Cyberjaya area too. I've done Puchong to Dengkil passing by Cyberjaya before, quite little traffic on Sundays

on the trainer... i guess it is due to stress on carbon frames if you try to ride it out of saddle.. you are just throwing the bike against a rigid frame and i guess that is not the best way to go about it... although i believe some people might not have problems with it...

for UV protective arm warmers... this has been well known so far... offer SPF 50 i think...
http://www.voler.com/browse/cat/?cat=Accessories,SolSkin

pedalspot... no... KSH, SS2... yes... occasionally i join them to ride on wednesday night... like once a month or longer... i hate the bumps at kesas... very painful at speeds of 30-40kph...

try to stay off expressways... everything else is still not too bad... car speeds are more faster on expressways.. and you have to remember the MEX highway incident... not the best of examples...

On Kesas do they ride at designated motorcycling lane or at the emergency lane of the expressway? Somehow I do find riding on expressway is quite dangerous, especially at night where you'll never know if someone doze off for a couple of seconds or drunk or etc..

BTW, does putrajaya has a cycling lane?

Yup, there's a bike lane on the kesas. Full loop from Bukit Jalil to Bandar Botanic Klang and back is approx 70km or so

The stretch from the Summit to Klang is actually flatter than the one from Summit to Bukit Jalil. The slopes there are pretty gentle. Drainage grills has been aligned properly now too, so its less hazardous for the skinny tires.

the fulcrums are usually quite loud.. i own FR7's... the 1st gen ones... they are loud then.. not sure about the new straight pull spoke models..

there is no possible way a tube can effect the sound of freewheel.. not that i know of... if not, it'd be a big hit as most people like loud freewheeling hubs nowadays...

that is unless you have messed with the hub locknut.... which remotely is the cause for louder noise..
then you should think how much hurt is a century ride.. quadruple of your 40k...
until now i'm not sure what it is but when I brought my bike to pedalspot..the technical guy there (I called him Joe, but derrick called him Kent, dunno which name) said that's normal as a sign of the bike has undergone its running in period. But still it happened right after I fixed my rear tube..quite weird..now its a whole lot buzzier..and it affect my mind that when free rolling down a hill the buzzy sounds like there is resistance on the bb rather than if it is less buzzy hence I feel it make my wheel slower tongue.gif

anyway where can I find Ritchey products here in KL? which bike shop? I want to search for this item. Ritchey WCS Carbon Curve Road Bars.
