hi all cyclist, i hv a question..

im getting my 1st roadbike soon...budget is rm2.5k and below...after lot's of reviews and went to couple of shops, i narrowed down my choices to two brand..merida road race (forgot which series..it's around rm2.3k) and also a polygon model (at lerun shop, rm2k..it's the red color one..helios 500??)

not much of a price different, but can you guys suggested which is which? i mean, ive no idea of the brands..in term of it's quality, comfort, etc...thx in advance!

edited: owh and there's exitway ergo for rm1.5k too...just saw it in a local bike mag...hurmm

haha..well i might be wrong on the model number..but it sure is painted red..and i googled around seems like the red one is helios 500..im not sure if the lower models got red color too or not..

anyway what's the usual price for helios 500? merida, polygon, exitway..compare the 3 brands for a sub 2.5k price...which one is the recommended brand? thx all smile.gif

QUOTE(butthead @ Jan 25 2012, 10:59 PM)
i think your merida is the race lite 901... or maybe 903...between 1.8k to 2.3k?

http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/20...ce+Lite+901-com
http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/20...ce+Lite+903-com

polygon is cheap.. but the bike shop selling it if you ask silvy... uhhh  sweat.gif

specialized and trek might not have that cheap a bike...but you can ask and see...

the other option is to check with kindredd on his scott speedster s20.. think he mention it was in the region of 2k...
http://www.scott-sports.com/us_en/product/10052/55733/218116

sorry, i have a lust and biased opinion for white bikes... i vote for scott...at RM2.5k

try to stay away from XDS,stepdragon, TW25, JBL and the likes...

thx butthead for the informative reply. it really helps. yes i highly believe it is merida road race lite 903-com..red/black color..it's a shop somewhere in PJ..friendly shop owners..he measured my body size with some of the bikes there..there's a merida road ride too but i think i prefer the road race 903..more garang colors flex.gif

Ofcoz... Merida>Polygon>Exitway

Thx guys for replying..merida maybe cheaper than the s40 but as a person new to roadbiking im quite clueless with the brands and gears technology etc..theres sora tiagra 105 and stuff so i assume as the price getting more expensive, the better..kinda same with the camera world that ive been breathing in for quite sometime already..

In photography, gears play a very minimal contribution to the final image produced as a photographer's creative eye is what make an image stand out from the rest, but somehow better gears will give you better control and comfort.. A low end camera at a good hand of a creative photographer can produce an award winning image too.

So can the same thinking be applied to cycling? A fit person can cycle more and faster with cheaper bikes compare to those with expensive bike but is unfit..yeah and of course at a cost of a harder effort by the former.

Very well said butthead. I guess i should start from the basic first and let see if the interest keep growing inside me..but that could be dangerous as i like to have the best of the best..i didnt get myself a full frame body as i found i seldom take my camera out nowadays (iphoneography is the way to go rclxms.gif ) and hence buying a beginner roadbike seems the better options for me..

The reason i picked cycling is because i look at it as a more interesting kinda sports compare to running..i get bored with running..wanna get the extra miles easily by cycling and hopefully less painful..i pulled a hamstring muscle recently from running activity...

Once i get my bike hopefully can join any of u guys here for s free weekend ride smile.gif hopefully i can catch up with ya'll speed... Im an avid tennis player n jog frequently but i know cycling gonna use a different muscles...gotta learn more from all the experienced riders in this thread notworthy.gif

QUOTE(butthead @ Jan 27 2012, 09:35 PM)
pardon me if i asked already... first bike right?

PM kindredd and see what he thinks of KH Cycle as a bike shop.

ultimately, comparisons aside... you have to purchase it from a bike shop that you feel comfortable and can click with.. you still have to rely on them after you purchase your bike for tune-ups and repairs...

best to go and talk to them and get a feel...

as a beginner... i don't think it is that easy to differentiate minor differences in a bike... which is why arguments are made based on what is written on paper and the price itself... i am speaking in terms of 1 jump in a range (S40 to S30) rather than a RM3k alloy speedster compared to a RM10k Foil carbon bike... higher price being a better bike is a given..

let me put it in another context.. you wouldn't be considering a full frame before you learn basic photography on a prosumer or DSLR camera right.. you won't appreciate the capabilities of a full frame unit until you truly understand the ins and outs of taking good shots and the art behind it...

as a newbie in the sport, you will just be finding your footing and learning what the bike is all about.. through experience, you gain understanding and you will turn up with requirements of your own that you want for your bike (like needing a wide angle lens for particular shots and getting a flash diffuser)... from there and then you will understand what are the more expensive bike is about and what is with all this stiffness and lightness thing that everyone is raving about...

Wow thanks for the write up butthead! Thanks for all the informative links too..gonna try the heart rate monitor training once i get my bike soon enough.

I get myself poisoned today..hehe..went to see some colnago bikes..what's your opinion on colnago move (2012 model) It has shimano 105 and priced almost double from my initial aim which is the merida road race 903. Since i can't road test both bikes, apart from the brand of the bikes and also tiagra vs 105, are there any significant differences in term of comfort, performance, durability, etc?

Quoted:
rm4.5k colnago prima
Rm5k colnago move
Rm5.8k colnago air

If there's none then i best get the merida for starting up this expensive hobby..

take ur time, dun jump to conclusions. Best to research the shops choices before u go.
jus sayin, which is the reason money is no object.

haha. good advice. because there are so many brands around my budget..i think i best buy any brand of bike from a shop that is nearby to my house. a little research leads me to Pedal Spot in sri Petaling. Quite near to my place compare to other bikes shop around KL..hence I might be getting whatever merida they have (within my budget of course).

How's the shop? good aftersales service?

hi guys..

last nite I went for my 1st ride at the hilly Bkt Tunku...not too steep and a very short ride..only 8km cos it's already late at night..btw i notice that my gear doesnt engage smoothly..how do one normally shift? long press of the shifter or quick burst tapping of the shifter? Mine is shimano 105. thx in advance.

plus I notice on the website my bike's stem is from controltech (carbon) mine is merida pro stem (not sure carbon or not)...i only managed to check it after bought that bike..is it packaged such way for malaysian market?

thx all for the tips..gonna ride and ride for a longer mileage this long weekend smile.gif can't wait..but painfully got blistered between the a** whistling.gif my friend suggested for a vaseline use..hurm let see if that would helps.

anyway I couldn't agree more with butthead with regards to choosing the right shop..it's like you are committing to a long term relationship with the shop..after quite a numbers of hopping from one bike shop to another, I can strongly conclude that KSH / pedalspot beats every other shops in term of their friendliness and also hospitality. Hence, my money goes to them....

I went to some boutique bike shops and there are some shops that their staff don't even greet or talk to me..it's like we went to an empty shop (i went with my cyclist friend) nobody even bother to ask what we are looking for (while im bringing lots of cash to spend on my 1st bike)...i wonder how they keep their customers that way vmad.gif

I'm a complete beginner and when I purchased my bike I was given a short course of basic 101 road cycling lessons by KSH staff...haha..from changing the tyres, pumping, computing and stuffs..hats off to them rclxms.gif not that i'm promoting them but I believe my money is well spent.

and yeah of course they are good at poisoning too whistling.gif

i get the scultura 904...carbon frame body...i checked on the merida website the stem is controltech one...but mine is merida pro stem..hence the question..

seat post is controltech (carbon) but handlebar and stem is not carbon i think..handlebar is FSA gossamer...I checked with the staff today and he mentioned it depends on the region...when goes into malaysia some parts are not shown as in the web..but i believe I tick 'Malaysia' in the merida website...so im confused now..did i get conned or what? can someone please verify...thx

if they ain't good at poisoning... they ain't a salesman...

i don't really like vaseline... i find it not comfortable and is often blardy sticky... unfortunately not a lot in malaysia... my friend did buy me a small can of those chamois cream for padded shorts from UK... very little and only a couple handful of application...but it is like a very thin cream that doesn't let you feel it's existence... i admit i never really went and source for it in KL.. but i think not a lot has interest in it and furthermore it ain't cheap...

most bike shops learn the art of looking out for rich faces... if you have one... you get VIP service... if you haven't... then god help you... normally i don't like them to come kaciao me... cos i like to stroll at my own leisure without being haunted left, right and center...go and follow them on their Wednesday night rides in kesas... out of the blue once in a while i do go ride with them... very very very very very x99 seldom..

Added on February 3, 2012, 9:59 pm

wow... that's a big jump from a race lite 903...

what you can do is go back one day and take a look at their other scultura 904 units.. if it has a controltech one stem... then you can afford to confront them... best if you go ss2 to take a look if you bought from sri petaling.. that way, you know if they had really pulled one on you...

i don't own a scultura, so hard for me to say a fair word, but since the handlebar is also an FSA unit instead of CT.. it might be possible that they are telling some truth about the localization of parts...
*
1st..im not rich..haha..just spending my hard earned money on my new interest..if i'm rich I would have gotten myself a jersey as well but money not enough so only got a spandex shorts..yeah and i'm riding with my old crocs shoes too (my cycling friend told I would be laughed at having a carbon frame but chap ayam shoes but who cares) whistling.gif

i've learnt my lesson with my photography gears...i should settle in the medium end of my equipments because I've always wanted for that better model and stuffs..hence no satisfaction with my current setup...initially i want a race lite 903..did some research on the internet and hence 105 is a better options so looking for 904..but no size available..looking at 905 with ultegra but my friend told me a good frame is a better investment than components..and then i'm settled with the scultura 904..hope it lasts for another 10 years

there's nothing that I will add to my current bike..i'm pretty much satisfied with my current ride...maybe a clip pedal and shoes but not in this coming 4-6 months..i'm more of a recreational rider not a competitive one.

lastly i get my bike from the ss2 shop...will seek clarification from the boss when i send the bike for her 1st service..the gears feel weird..sometimes it don't shift properly..could be my technique at fault but let see how it performs these few days...

wanna enjoy my ride to the fullest ..a healthy ride for a healthy lifestyle smile.gif
