Won't happen as long banks need to share 30% cut with Apple.

iOS has pretty low market share in Malaysia. around 20%
Here in Sweden iOS has 62% market share. And still nobody uses apple pay. Formally it exists. But I've never seen a shop that accepts it. Too much hassle and cost for the shops to have one more payment solution.

For banking customers, less than 10% use iOS devices with their mobile banking app here in Malaysia. Just by those numbers alone, it doesn't justify the cost needed to setup an alternative payment solution nor would retailers here want to spend more on another terminal. Most of them already complain about the costs of the credit card terminal yet add on additional ones.

Apple Pay is ready in Malaysia. It rides on the paywave platform which is already available. I have used Apple Pay via Apple Watch or iPhone XS countless of time in Malaysia. It is just that the local banks do not support it.

It isn't just the local banks, but through their dealer network such as GH Payments and the others who resell the services on behalf of banks. Because of how certain banks are setup, if for example if a merchant takes a credit card terminal from Maybank, they will get 2 machines, one for Visa/Mastercard and another for AMEX. On top of that, if the merchant wants another bank, thats additional more machines. The trick here is how much % cut that needs to go to Apple. Visa/Mastercard/Paynet/Amex all take a cut in the transaction fees. Add another player, that means a diminishing % margins for the merchant. Its bad enough that products may have razer thin margins especially for certain items hence its gets a bit tricky. Samsung had Samsung pay for the longest time but consumer adoption is still fairly low on that.

You can use apple pay for almost any paywave machine here in Malaysia. I linked my lion city debit card to Apple Pay and paid a couple of times using Apple Pay in Malaysia

You can’t even open a SG account if you go there physically. It used to be easy, not anymore.

Looked up Apple’s website. Aeon Visa supported in Japan.

Anyone here want to convince Aeon Malaysia to make their Visa card work with Apple Pay?

Apple Pay first launched in the United States in October 2014 and is also available in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, France, Japan, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Russia, New Zealand, Brazil, Poland, Ireland, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.

Apple CEO Tim Cook yesterday said Apple Pay will be available in more than 40 countries and regions by the end of 2019.
Hopefully Malaysia is part of the 40 countries to have Apple Pay by this year

Ironically....
Apple users here calling for Apple Pay kickoff in Malaysia....while all the financial institutions not in for it yet...because low population, even though maybe high utilization expected
Android side happily roll it on with high population, but low utilization I believe...
Many android around me not using mobile payment like boost, Samsung pay, Maybank pay, etc, citing security concern...
