So many of you simply ask for help but didn't provide the necessary info such as the firmware version/build, IPv4/IPv6 etc. until have to be asked several time. If you are lazy to search for answers, please don't be lazy to provide the crucial info when asking for help. Nobody knows the details unless you provide it. You will ended getting replies based on their assumptions which may not applicable for you.
1. Ping can be blocked by firewall or routing issue. Don't simply assume cannot ping means DNS problem.
2. To check for DNS problem, use nslookup command instead of ping. If you get similar replies using the router & your pc, then it shouldn't be DNS problem.
3. Did you ping using IPv6? If the IPv6 address of the router changed due to restart or WAN reconnection, your pc existing IPv6 address may no longer valid until the lease time expired, released/renewed or reconnected to your router. Until then, any routing on IPv6 from your pc to internet will fail.

It may be some minor bug in the ported firmware. Try messing around with the custom DNS settings.
Apparently, it is no longer updated for quite a while. Tomato is still being updated by the author.
Actually Asus already announced they will change their firmware format to lockdown and comply with the FCC rules. They finally introduced it recently and AsusWRT-Merlin based on that version is still in beta, so I wouldn't be surprised if Xwrt-Vortex will wait until stable version come out. Another thing is there is no publicly available source code for XWRT-Vortex modifications, so we can't compile it ourself.
Tomato-ARM main issue is they backported the kernel & drivers from AsusWRT. A lot of things just broken and unrealiable as it were incompatible with their existing code base. Yes, they fixed most of it but some stability issue still persist & I won't recommend people using it unless they want to use it purely as access point or just don't care. Updated more frequently so what? Most of the updates were on the 3rd party packages & minor fixes. I prefer Toastman build over Shibby's on Broadcom MIPS platform as Shibby's tend to favour more features unlike Toastman's more conservative build.
I'm not a fan of AsusWRT-Merlin firmwares, but they are the more reliable option for Broadcom ARM based Asus routers & they can do most of the things I wanted from a home wireless router.
