Who are Sennheiser?

Sennheiser electronic is an international organisation based in Wennebostel (Wedemark), near the German town of Hannover. In 2007 the turnover of the family-owned company was around 395 million euros. Of that, over 83 percent was generated outside Germany. The range of products offered includes headphones, microphones, wireless microphone and monitoring systems, conference and information systems as well as aviation and audiology products.

The world’s leading manufacturer of studio microphones, Georg Neumann, is part of the Sennheiser Group, as is the Klein + Hummel Vertriebs- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, a company renowned for its studio monitors, loudspeakers and Installed Sound products. The Danish-based joint venture company, Sennheiser Communications, which develops headsets for PC, office and call centre markets, also belongs to the Sennheiser Group. The group’s products are distributed via an international network of long-standing Sennheiser partners and subsidiaries.

In that case, might as well aim for the HD800S used. From what I understand, it's not just the damping material, but also some engineering that went into taming the 6Khz peak. Also, there's another HD800 mod popular recently, Tyll was talking about it here

Yummy, but as always, HD800/S is half of a complete system. Jude made a review of the Woo WA8 which he said pairs very nicely with the Senn. It also costs as much as the Senns too. Grumble.

There's better amps to use with the HD800/S, doubt you'll be taking it outside much anyway. But yes, synergy is the name of the game. If you're committed, think it over and go for it rclxms.gif

The sound from this setup (HDVD800 + HD800) is more like personal preference, to me the sound is more suitable to orchestra and classical.

Headphones also need good and suitable pairing especially flagship headphones, then it will shine cool.gif

Tyll concluded that he preferred the Super Dupont Resonator HD800 with EQ.

But if one is not interested to mod and not use EQ, HD 800 S is the better choice.

Why not the HDVD800? Apparently, it's one of the better solid state DAC/Amp to pair with the HD800 (and apparently so with the HD800 S)... Short of the Liquid Gold. bangwall.gif

Why not the HDVD800? Apparently, it's one of the better solid state DAC/Amp to pair with the HD800 (and apparently so with the HD800 S)... Short of the Liquid Gold.  bangwall.gif
*
The main reason I never considered it is because it doesn't play well with planars, by several accounts. If you're only running the 800/800S with it, no worries. But as I wanted to use several different types of headphones from various makers, didn't think it was worth it.

Anax mod is passe. Super Dupont Resonator mod is the in thing.  brows.gif
Tyll concluded that he preferred the Super Dupont Resonator HD800 with EQ.

But if one is not interested to mod and not use EQ, HD 800 S is the better choice.
Why not all the way to HD800 / HD800 S?  wub.gif

Yes, I've always seen HD800 pairing with tubes. I do agree if just running the HD800 / HD800 S, then the HDVD800 is worth but if you have other cans, then something else is required... Like the Liquid Gold. blush.gif

I'm a very huge fan of Schiit Audio, because their products have a great performance/price ratio. I started from their entry level, moved up to the Lyr 2 tube/SS hybrid, and am now at the Mjolnir 2 hybrid. You should give them a try also, much better value than CA or Sennheiser, and pretty much almost anyone else out there. If you're really committed to going to TOTL gear, that's a different story la, but for mid-tier gear, I don't think anyone comes close.

Alternatively, there's also Decware (US-made) and Feliks Audio (Polish) for tube-only amps that are highly-rated (know several contacts that love theirs). I generally steer clear from the China-made stuff because I don't trust their power components.

PS. I bought direct from Schiit Audio and had it shipped back, made sure to confirm there's no issue with warranty first as well. If you're interested in either of the others, you should also contact them first.

rclxms.gif Indeed I've read that combo sounds lovely. Prefer SS systems though. But then again if I audition it too much, I might end up liking it. bangwall.gif

Thanks for the tip. Yup, the Mjolnir comes highly recommended but I guess I've yet to be at the level and patience to mess around with tubes even though the Mjolnir is a hybrid. Hence my preference for SS. So that leaves me with Ragnorak ! laugh.gif

Anyway, if I were to get anything, it'll be a desktop DAC first. At first I had my eyes on the Bifrost or Gungnir Multibit DAC but people are claiming that the Mojo is on the same level as the Gungnir Multibit. I think for amp, my LC is sufficient for now. cool.gif

There's also the first-gen Mjolnir, but you'll have to wait for one to show up used tongue.gif

Edit: While I was pondering the Ragnarok, I did contact Schiit to ask if they modify the voltage (115V to 230V) on their products. Apparently they do, but you'll have to purchase your amp first, and then send it in to them, they charge up to $100 for the service, depending on model. In case you're thinking of getting a used unit from the States.

Good day guys! I'm new to the world of audiophile. I just got myself an HD598 recently with a very good price. I'm using the Audioengine D1 to drive these headphones. However, I do feel like its kind of lacking something in the treble. Will these improve over time? Is there any good budget amps recommended at the price around RM500-1000?

Thanks in advance!

Mungkin boleh bawa HD598 kesayangan anda ke kedai-kedai audio berdekatan thumbsup.gif

Anyway, as far as I remembered, HD598 is not a particularly bright headphone to begin with. The lack of treble? Are you hearing the same song but differently on different setup?

I'd say be careful when choosing the IE800 from non-official retailers as the piracy version of the IE800 is rampant.

Despite being in production for more than a decade, Sennheiser HD650 still holds its ground as one of the best bang for bucks headphones out there. musical n non fatiguing without that ear piercing trebles which r becoming more prominent in high end headphones these days.

also, 650 scales very well with amplification, the better the amp, the better it sounds. currently running it through a clone violectric v200/v800 stack. sounds way better than pairing it with o2/odac (my previous setup).

3rd time owning a hd650. definitely a keeper. i always had buyer's remorse/regret whenever i sold my previous hd650's for higher end headphones like beyer t1 n senn hd800.

Hi all, I had my HD598 for more than a year now. I really enjoy it so far, but I realize a weakness in the headphone, the driver feels slow when listening to fast songs.

Do you think upgrading to HD600/HD650 will improve the fast song problem? I listen to a variety of genres but mainly mainstream pop songs nowadays. I currently have a Centrance DACport LX, I assume I will need to get an amp if I upgrade to HD600/HD650? What do you guys think?

Anyone knows where can I get shorter replacement cable for HD650. I'm not looking for high end audiophile grade ones.

The stock cable is too long for me so it's troublesome to pack in the bag as I'm always moving around.

i still remember trying at canjam, the dial effect to the bass isnt very significant if 1 notch, but min to max you can feel the bass slightly heavier volume, but still under control, better than COP.

I'm sure Raggy has its merits, but I have two dudes calling the Raggy "just a lot of power". Hey, isn't that a perfect straight wire with gain? Lol.

Portable audio and IEMs I can play all day, but a desktop system I (hopefully) buy one set and get it right. Taurus looks and sounds good, and SE and balanced has two distinct signatures so that appeals to the Cina in me. Hope to test the Yggy/Rag stack one day, amongst all the top, top stuff Tyll tried out in Big Sound 2015.

Sennheiser's answer to the Parrot Zik? Looks like a good option for use in flights, how's the build etc?

Ive never owned hd600 before, but most of the reviews r stating the difference is minimal, with hd650 being a touch more warm sounding, just like hd800s is to the original hd800

Some features similar with the Zik, but I think Sennheiser was aiming more at the QC35 audience lol

Build quality is nice, typical Sennheiser solid plastic with internal metal band strip. The touch surface feels a bit rubbery, but is very sensitive. Like other reviews at times quite easy to accidentally touch a function. A bit worried how it'll hold up if it gets scratched lol
The earpads are very soft/mushy. Compared to Momentum which is more firm and plush. But the ear cups isn't that big, I have average ear size but I don't find much room for my ears to move. I think it's slightly bigger than the Momentum V1.

Bluetooth range is very good. My phone was downstairs and I get solid connection upstairs through ceiling and walls if I don't move. If I move it can get a bit choppy though.

Sound quality is great for a Bluetooth NC type. Bass isn't bloated and so far no distortion, and highs gives a bit of sparkle and not sibilant. Mids are warm and clear, not the analytical clean type. Overall quite balanced sound.
Spatial imaging and soundstage is not bad as well.

I got this mainly for plane usage, sometimes I just want less noise without listening to music. But the ability to on/off NC in Bluetooth mode is a real + for me.

The HD series are pretty amp dependant actually. Certain amps like La Figaro is able to bring out the sweet vocal out from Hd600. But it's never sibilant for HD600. It doesn't have that spike like his bro Hd800 do. So it won't be fatiguing after long hours of listening. But I only compared it in certain amps in Starpicker. Still ended up with Hd650 in the end for a better all rounder and a more body. But Starpicker have a lots of amps that pairs really well with sennheiser HD6xx series. I love the pairing of La Figaro and Audio GD. But now looking to try out little dot mkiv.

I just tried it with the Chord Mojo because at home I have the Grace M9XX which is very similar to the Mojo. I didn't bring it here so I just used the Mojo. I can't really tell that much of a difference between the HD600/650 though. Probably because of my noob ears. So that's why I don't know if I can justify the RM700-ish price difference. Decisions decisions.

Oh. That's a decent source. But they goes well with tubes also. It's hard to justify the Rm700 difference. As for me, both of these headphones are on the same league. For Hd650, it excels in the bass department when compared to Hd600. Hd600 have a more forward mids compared to Hd650. It's back to preference. Or u can invest in a Hd600 and the Rm700+few hundreds more bucks for a tube amp to go with it. biggrin.gif

I already have an Aune T1se but not too sure if it'll sound well with the HD6X0.. I'll have to try it out first.. After trying the demo units at Starspicker, I find that the songs I tried made the HD600 sound better.. The songs were vocal-focused.. I listen mostly to mainstream though.. But after a while the clamp pressure was bothering me a bit.. I love vocal clarity, but find the HD650 very very close to the sound of the HD600..

What a coincidence. I am using Aune T1 too for my Hd650. Hvnt been able to fund an upgrade of amp lol. Both the headphones are at the same league as I mentioned. But upgrade cable does a great magic on my HD650 too. The Symphonic Cable. You should really try it. And also, a headphone calibration program called Sonarworks, some say it is just gimmicks, coz it uses eq to make my HD650 sounds more balanced. It's actually a plug in for media player. But, the engineer behind sonarworks had done alot of research and calibration to attain that EQ. It cost $99. But for me it's worth for the upgrade. You can also have a look at it.

If you're willing to mod the HD650 with the quarter mod & foam removal, it'll help in improving the upper mid range. Mod

In regards to the clamping pressure, you can hang on say a stack books to lessen the pressure eventually if you dont want the immediate clamping force.

I see. I will try it with both my Aune T1se & Grace M9XX and see how it fares. Hopefully it'll be good.

How much is the Symphonic cable? Isn't it out of production already? I will definitely look into the software. Much thanks again!

I don't think I'll mod it at all actually, I'll just use it as it is. For the clamping pressure I've bought a wide headphone stand that would stretch the headphone out a bit so maybe that'll help smile.gif

Btw guys I went and purchased the HD600 instead of the HD650. It's because I'm buying a headphone purely for vocal clarity, and I think the HD600 clearly beats the HD650 when it comes to vocal (for me that is). Maybe when I sell my AKG K7XX in the future, I'll upgrade that to the HD650 because from what I've heard it's very similiar sound profiles. Appreciate the help you gave guys wink.gif

T1SE is very good for the DAC part. Amp wise is strong enough to provide enough volume for HD650, but if want to release more potential of it, pair the T1SE with a B1 or X7 amp will be much better.

people often spend more on the amp to power the hd800 for the reason on desiring their own personal sound signature and hd800 are pretty much the only headphone that gets influenced by an amp that powers it the most.

you can consider schiit, or woo audio as there's quite good reviews from them. personally, i'm just not fond of the hd800 and how costly it can get to get an ideal overall system. not that i can afford a good hd800 system anyways.

good luck smile.gif

A bit troublesome but very fast. I did it over email (fill in + submit documents including proof of payment) and got the permit within the same day.

Don't need SIRIM for amplifier unless there's wireless/Bluetooth inside and you're unlucky

If you bought it on Amazon, you don't need worry about the tax because it's settled on check-out by Amazon on your behalf.

BTW, Amazon UK offers much cheaper shipping rate and cheaper price after currency conversion.

The import duty and gst you had to pay is around RM70. Based on 15% import duty and 6% gst. It's the hassle going to KLIA. But can request the POS can handle the custom tax on your behalf though.

Depends what you are looking for? NC or SQ? I wanted a good balance of both so I went for PXC-550.
You can also add in Sony's MDR-1000X to your list.

Not sure if the MDR-1000X already available in market or not. I guess it was just launched in IFA this year.
Both momentum and qc35 can't really switched off its NC when on wireless.

My priority is wireless.
tried both but more prone to momentum right now. But I must say the qc35 NC is damn good.
where did you get your PXC-550 from? It's quite new too if I'm not wrong.

Not sure if the MDR-1000X already available in market or not. I guess it was just launched in IFA this year.

Got it from Amazon. The NC for PCX-550 is much better than the Momentum but still just below the QC35.
Sound wise PXC-550 is a better all rounder, as in I got it specifically for both music and movies since I'll be using it on flights. And being able to turn off the NC in Bluetooth mode is a big plus.
One big drawback I noticed so far is i can't sleep tilted with the headphone cups putting pressure on the pillow as it affects the NC. That means sleeping facing straight or heads down which is very annoying.
Not sure if the QC35 has the same problem, interested to find out.

I think you can test the MDR-1000X in Sony Centres in KLCC/Curve as they are having a showcase event. You can check the other thread for the dates.

The 009 is my home setup, won't be leaving with me when I travel for work/fun. The transportable setup is Sony ZX2 -> Chord Hugo -> ZMF Omni/ HD 800S/ TH 900/ LCD X (rotation based on my mood).

Added these in the mix since I felt the sound signature would complement those I already had, and I was right smile.gif

At home, it's still Stax uber alles wink.gif

My setup is HD800S powered by DAC/Amp Schiit Jotunheim. Source: Spotify premium, PC.

Pro: It's good for music, movie, and gaming. Treble and mid are the strong points of HD800S. It's good and detail. Bass is quite good for an open headphones, it has the punchy feel. Soundstage is definitley one of the best. Crank up the volume and you can totally immerse in the music.

Con: Price tag. You can buy a pair of good bookshelf speakers and dac/amplifier with changes left.

That would depend very much on what your definition of good is. But as for the headphones themselves, they're worthy of their flagship status.

with so many revisions of HD600 and HD650, the reviews you read in the internet is no longer valid.

you need to listen to the latest batch before you buy.

It's been a while since I got a Senns headphone and my name is still on first post laugh.gif I just got quite old Sennheiser HD 555 in very good condition for very cheap price. Immediately after I got it I know it sounds rather wrong and remove the foam to make it effectively HD 595. With that pesky foam gone it really sounds wonderful especially the lower frequency. Quite surprise the headphone is very comfortable and very good wear with glasses.

They are not as good as new ones but there is something about old headphones, I still hunting for classics like AKG K501 but I didn't see them anymore.

On another note, the more cynical part of me wonders if this is just a prelude to the HD650 being discontinued/replaced. Hmm...

In my case I seldom listen to headphones at home, so it's really a waste of money getting one. I can forsee if I get the HD6XX, 95% it'll be left unused in my cupboard lol
But... i'm a deal sucker, and who knows in the far future I might use them more... blush.gif

Could be, since they already released newer versions for the HD5XX series. Maybe within a couple of years there will be a refresh.
But for $200, the older HD650 will still retain it's value. Pity those who only recently bought the 650 for retail price, their resell value would take a massive beating..

Where is a good place to buy the Sennheiser Momentum in-ear at good prices?

The standard price is around RM500+. There must be places that sells cheaper. I am a bit hesitant to buy from unknown Lelong seller as there might be fake Sennheiser products. Prefer to buy from reputable seller or shops. Any recommendations would be great.

So finally you received yours. Congrats.

What amp do you use for the HD6xx?

Yeap Bro, they say have duty fee, but when they enter it into system no duty, so i only pay for the GST. Hehe

I only have Fostex HP-A4, SMSL sAp-VI and SMSL SAP-8

I already ordered a A16, for my HD800 and can use with my HD6xx too.

you went all the way to the LCCT to pay? They didn't give you the option to have Poslaju appointed as an agent?

If I remember correctly, from online reviews/product description, HDXXX cable is shorter than stock HD650 right?

Btw, mine is still here, doesn't move at all. Latest is 22 Dec.
