All About Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii is the 7th generation console released by Nintendo. It has considerably lesser graphical juice compared to XBOX 360 and the Sony PS3 but aims to capture the fun of gaming through the games and creative use of both its motion sensor controller - the WiiMote and Nunchuk.

Currently, there is 3 version of the consoles, NSTC/UC, NSTC/JP and PAL. The games are region locked so becareful which version you buy. There are rumours of an Asian release but no updates on that yet.

The SRP for the Wii in other countries are US$250, A$400 and 25000 Yen. In Malaysia, the price can range from RM1,700 to RM2,000.

The Wii is Wifi-enabled where you can shop via the WiiShop or connect to friends via WiiConnect24. It is also able to connect wirelessly with your Nintendo DS but at launch, this feature is still being worked on.

for those who want to set up their Wii on a projector, you should aware that the sensor bar only designed to works at no more that 6-8 feet.. so, you can try to create another sensor bar, like this guy over here notworthy.gif

Some normal (non-HD) TV comes with component input to offer a better picture quality that your normal S-video or composite input.

Component input = red, blue, green inputs behind your TV

A little bit tempting to get PS 2 - nowadays can get so easily!

well, for an easy n non costly solution, can always use those typical video switches for composite (yellow, white n red), but replace them with RGB cables , can also use the SAME non color specific cables as long as they're the same length n quality (need some coordination lar on this). used this setup before i got an actual component video switch.....

unless u hv the eyes of a hawk, u cant see any difference. even if u did, i dont think theres any. works like a charm for years for me as my tv got 1 component input only n my amp aint got any! provided (as i mentioned before), use same cables, same length etc (from switch to tv all cables length A, dvd player to switch length B etc....for the console to the switch hv to get respective cables for consoles lar, hehe)

however, this only works if you connect your sound cables (red n white) directly to your amp lar n not to ur tv, hehe. if need optical inputs for sound hv to see ur amp lar.....need different tool for that if u dont hv enuff tongue.gif(luckily mine got 3, enough lar...)..

well, general rule of thumb applies for audio if u lack audio input (red n white cable). get creative!

so, who sez u need to spend a bomb to find a fancy switch rclxms.gif ? got 1 extra...a lil flimsy now tho.... of course if u have the ones with the remotes, its even fancier lar biggrin.gif

^ hehe.. it's basicly the next "Pikmin" + "Katamari" type of game smile.gif

You need to hunt for these Elebits(short of Electric Bits) to power up your house. You are given a "physics gun" (like HL2's gravity gun) to turn your whole house upside down in search for them. As you acquire more Elebits, you get "Watts" to power up more equipment, and especially you gun, so you can lift up heavier stuff and search for more Elebits smile.gif

Well, no worries if you broke your Sensor Bar, the " 2 candles as sensor bar " tricks makes the sensor bar a thing in the past. Any 2 light sources placed at the edges of the TV will act as a sensor for that matter.

Or.. you could do that DIY sensor bar by buying some circuit boards and some infrared LEDs.. Make a wireless one also not bad.

Wouldnt the 2 candles alerady makes it wireless by nature already?tongue.gif

I was surprised to see how workable, and pretty usable, the 2 candle trick is. But until my sensor bar snaps or anything, im using it to the fullest.

Games are region locked.

US games - NTSC/UC
Jap games - NSTC/J
Aust games - PAL

So you cant use American games on an Australian console for now...

I saw in a shop near mid valley there's a shop next to the food court selling wiis...

Good-

-It includes rampage + Wii sports + Wii & controllers [wiimote & Nunchuck]
-Only RM1800
-Not too far away

Bad-
-The only game they give with it [Other than Wii Sports] is RAMPAGE....
-Rampage isn't one of the games that wil be WAY more fun on the Wii... than PS2

Basically pretty good deal....

but if u want to enjoy it get it then go out and get a new Wii game...=P

Then again...sum ppl like rampage so if u r one of those ppl.... Then, it's the perfect deal

Once upon a time, Gamers Hideout, TNL and Imbi Mario all offered the same package. For slightly above RM2000?

Now, no more. Probably due to high demand and low supply.

Do you even know what im talking about? blink.gif

SEnsor bars can be replaced by placing two light sources at a distance between each other. The Wiimote then detects these and calibrates itself as the two light sources now acts as the edges of the TV screen.

SEnsor bars can be replaced by placing two light sources at a distance between each other. The Wiimote then detects these and calibrates itself as the two light sources now acts as the edges of the TV screen.

US games - NTSC/UC
Jap games - NSTC/J
Aust games - PAL

So you cant  use American games on an Australian console for now...

that is the d-terminal output which resembles the component cables and is mainly used in Japan, you couldn't just input that on your pc smile.gif

Ermm to ur speakers? If your speaker only has 1 input, then you need to get a 2-to-1 converter...

The 2-to-1 converter is easily available in any electrical shops so no worries on that smile.gif

You should go to Best Denki and have a look see for yourself. There is no set price as it depends on the size of the TV you want and what type of TV you are looking for (LCD/Plasma/Projection/etc).

Anyone know where I can get a Wii bag? Right now it's pretty inconvenient and messy to store the wiimotes and nunchuks. Just got my Wii today!

Had fun playing multiplayer games on Wii Sports and Super Monkey Ball with a bunch of friends. Just waiting for Warioware and SSMB to complete the Wii party fun. smile.gif

prices are going up slightly again sad.gif its US holiday season and Christmas on its way, I would say the price will be around there until at least New Year.. once the holiday season is over and the hype dies down, I would say the price will drop quite quickly from its current overly hiked price.
for those who can wait, do wait..
for those who can't, well I think you would already have one by now thumbup.gif

I got myself a 3rd party component cable for the Wii. If your TV can output 480p, this cable is the ONLY way to go.

Of course you can't compare Wii's 480 with XBox360's stellar 720p - but hey, it makes the Wii games look a lot more sharper than the crappy composite. If you have a nice widescreen HD tv at home - you can junk the composite lah.

I wouldnt go so far as to say the Wii looks "GREAT" in 480p - but its a big enough jump from composite quality to warrant the investment if you have the right TV at home.

Apparently with enough force, the strap will break. Of course, you could be holding your Wiimote when that happens.

The strap will only break if you let go of the controller, or you intentionally try to break it.

Some people get too excited while playing Wii Sports. They think you have to Throw the wiimote like throwing the bowling bowl etc.

Actually how come the prices here for Nintendo is so high wan mad.gif , I thought Nintendo will have a standard price or something. For USA and Japan, they have fixed price right? Even on hectic launch day, they hype more crazy in those places leh!

Here its near $2K, so not right cry.gif , same goes for the DS Lite which is RM700+ (a few months back,) aiyoh cannot tahan ... I guess Nintendo don't have a big presence here or something? maybe because so many pirate games / cracked consoles? Its like karma, we crack their product, buy pirate games, so they don't 'protect' our market? ... we are the barbarians they must think ... cry.gif

thre is no way you can get the retail american price over here. reason is because currently now everywhere no stock at all~.

plus~ all wii oever here are parellel improt. which means have to go through certain supplier then only can get stock.

first, my waiting list for the wii bundle has reach at an enormous waiting list.. plus I don't think supplier will even can give me that much stock (if I can get 20 units at one go)

second, as you can see around you, a lot other country is running very low.. (cause its been a big hit for the wii as well)

and yes. no warranty due to parellel import.. (damn sad) but I will try to assist you if there is any problem in the future.

not really.. lets take this example..

Retail shop selling at RM 1200 (at U/S with 2 games). Pass it down to Supplier A RM 1400.. then Supplier A supplier to Supplier B RM 1600..

then supplier B supplier to Local retailer gamshop RM 2k...

this is what really happening

if you are looking for a better price next years janaury is a better solution.

due to the christmas is around the corner.. plus the demanding of a wii is freaking high... thats why local gameshop can't get the neear "retailer" price yet.

Nintendo should just make the console region free :/ ......... region locking for copy protection isn't really helping at all in the first place......

Plus making the console region free will help bring games into other countries faster.........

i would think the region lock would be more for the virtual console since copyright would be an issue with these old games. But who knows what Nintendo is thinking.

Red Steel = mad.gif .. The game just couldn't tahan my l337ness and decided to freeze up on me.

@ Red Steel players, pls help, gamefaqs doesn't have a full walkthrough.

It's either I'm blind, or Ubisoft Montreal has the BEST level designs. I'm having trouble finding a way to get onto the platform which takes you on the cable car. There's no stairs, ladders, or boxes you can jump on to get onto higher ground.. When I found out there's no possibility, I decided to use a little of my Quake/Half-Life skills.. Jump here, jump there, trying to force myself up the platform until the game jams, and gives me one hell of a buzzing sound..

And I'm not the only one who found this as a problem, and some people's game froze too.. mad.gif

That's a tough question.. If you enjoy adventure games, then Zelda might be for you.. It's the puzzle elements(story, and design) that makes Zelda games enjoyable. If you're in for 50-70 hours of gameplay, yes get it.

Rayman is party game to the max, I've heard alot of people saying that it's good. If you have friends, or family that you wanna enjoy the Wii with, why not?

Oh yea, since you're Pal Wii, didn't you get Wii Play?

Yeah, Zelda is for personal time smile.gif But actually Zelda might be quite enjoyable. Since it's a large game with lotsa of things/exploring to do, yeah, might take abit of time before you can finish it. Plus, it is said the the fishing mini-game is quite a blast and should be sold as a seperate title tongue.gif

I wanna try Wind Waker first, and if I like it, I should be getting Zelda TP.. But for now, my target is Wii Play(for the wiimote), Warioware, Cooking Mama Wii, Dragon Quest Swords, Elebits.. and.. and.. and.. .. Smash Bros. Brawl? thumbup.gif

Well, the strap is pretty flimsy, I inspected it the other day. The thicker Wiimote strap certainly looks more secure.

Sorry man, but I have no computer at home as we speak, all my messages here will only come through weekdays 8 to 5pm sad.gif And I'm still waiting on Djinn to get his stock.. I don't have cash now tho, if not I'll go pick up CoD3 biggrin.gif

Thanks man, hope you remember me from LAN 06 event.

And yeah, Red Steel is actually great.. The bug and the bad level design just killed me off one bit doh.gif .. I'm at the creepy "Raving Rabbids" stage now tongue.gif

Lol well, when I need a game badly and they don't have it, I buy it elsewhere. So I guess it depends on how badly you need the game.

Greg: Bro's hogging the PS2 right now so I can't get Wii's Friend Code.. will try and get it again the next day. Been really busy these days, doubt I'll have time to play Zelda. =__=

I'm thinking of getting an LCD TV too.. budget's only about RM4k >_> Any recommendations? Panasonic's 32"? My telly is sort of spoiled, so it irritates me to be playing when 1/4 of the screen is out of shape.

i'm supposed to get nfs carbon as a free game with my pre-order but since TRU didn't get their copies on the mindnite launch, i haven't receive it till today.. i'm thinking of going to the TRU and try to make them change it to another game because i'm going back to Malaysia next week and i'll bring my passport n flight ticket for a prove.. so, if they allow it, which game should i choose?? i dun think they will let it be zelda coz zelda is already out of stock there.. if i'm not mistaken, when i was there yesterday, the only game that i think i really want is rayman..

so, should i change my nfs carbon with rayman?? or should i just wait for the nfs carbon?? which one better??

@ tnsai: So.. are you trying to say that the controls a good? As in tight? And not flying/drifting all over the place?

The thing about motion sensing controls is where the neutral(180 degrees) point to keep the car/truck straight. I'm wondering about that cause I was having hell in RR7.. I basicly drifted the whole track just like in Mario Kart, LOLZERS.. laugh.gif

it was a bit flying all over the place initially.. but after a while i was able to control it, it is hard to keep it straight but not impossible..

All you need is 15 mins with it and you'll be turning and driving naturally.

Won S on all courses except the nebula. and all trucks except the crazy monster truck.

My advice, get the game.

Yes, the Wii needs a stepdown transformer if you're purchasing US consoles. Unless you want your poor Wii to be fried.

Holy $hit, i cant believe im having so much fun with just a simple Weather Channel! This is the best freebie anybody can give, thanks for the early Christman present , Nintendo!

Bloody awesome i tell you, go get your FREE Weather Channel UPDATE NOW!

Zoom in and out with the + and - button, grab the globe and give it a spin to check out weather at distant locations, or simply narrow it down to your location of choice. Today's forecast, as well as tomorrow's...hell, why not 5 days forecast! This will replace weather.com as my weather reference of choice. 2 thumbs way up, Nintendo is a genius including this in. I cannot wait for the News Channel to go online! rclxm9.gif

Krazee bro, KL Malaysia ada, cuma kena zoom in closer, plus Kuala Lumpur is a long city to spell out so interposition of KL with Singapore since both are closely located. The weather forecast is accurate though, and i think they are getting this from TAF (Terminal Area Forecast) and METAR(Meteorological Area Report) which are fed to us us when we go to work. Awesome! KL weather report?A hazy 27 degrees! Word of advice, to get the most accurate readout, refresh and relogin into the Weather channel often as the weather info refreshes every hour.

That's not true, I checked and Kuala Lumpur is included. Apparently we have Haze, as of 8pm today. O_O

You must zoom in closely I think, don't zoom out too far out or else what you only see is Singapore. Too bad we can't make KL as our main city.. instead of choosing cities based on the country you have selected (mine's Brazil, heh).

Edit:
Haha scrap that, replied too slow. Anyway yeah the update was slow, and sort of hanged at one point that I have to go back to the menu and do the update again.

Wii controller prototypes from the early days

QUOTE
Wii controller prototypes from the early days
Perhaps a star controller could have made Nintendo invincible in the new home console race.

December 19, 2006 - The Wii Remote and its creation is a subject that interests many, and in the past we've been able to take a look at early prototypes and patent images, which have managed to shed a little light on exactly how Nintendo's killer controller came to be.

The Nikkei Business magazine in Japan has apparently published an image depicting four previously unseen controllers, and a couple of them are quite similar to the final product. One of them is downright crazy, though.

^ Me office does not allow entertainment from GooTube sad.gif

Anyways, do not use CHEAP batteries on the Wiimote, damn RM7.80 value pack 8-piece Panasonic SUPER Heavy Duty lasted me just below 10 hours. From 4 bars to 3 I thought no problem, play Red Steel for 1 hour, from 3 bars became 1 shocking.gif

The stock batteries that came with the Wii rocked, really lasted somewhat 20-30 hours.. Some industry type Panasonic batts from JP thumbup.gif (Not for sale in retail) mad.gif

Yes, Pokeyman is coming out for the US. Gotta wait abit..

Zelda or Red Steel? rclxub.gif You like lots of action, or prefer adventure?

Elebits or SMB? Depends on your taste really.. But if wanna try something new then Elebits, good reviews, and also claimed "True Wii title".

Trauma? Should be very good, DS version shines and this one polishes.

But take note that I only own REd Steel at the moment, really really action packed.

Guys, this is a community service notice, a simple heads up message. I have managed to secure the Auditorium at Mediaplex KLCC, for tomorrow's HD-DVD playtest .But this also presents a chance for those with Wiis to try out Wii play on 100inch screen, at this Auditorium, and play your games at this size as well.

The initial plan was to just try out HD-DVD playback , but with this opportunity, you , the Wii owners, have the chance to see how the games would look and play like on this state of the art facility. The only task need to be done is to bring along your Wii for this, as well as any other titles needed to play/watch on your Wii. I can provide Wii titles to play, and you are more than welcomed to bring yours. The decision is yours, i hope to see you guys tomorrow at Mediaplex KLCC. PM me if there are any queries. Thanks for reading. smile.gif

I concur, genius gameplay! And i dare say, the most artistically beautiful game in my whole Wii game library! So much fun messing up the house, but careful not to mess it too much, i got stuck with items strewn about around me i cannot walk over them! Making a mess has never been this much fun! rclxm9.gif

It's the GCN Hori Digital Pad you should be looking for if you want SNES style. It's basicly a GCN control layout, shapre like a SNES cont. and without analogue stick. Supposed to be used with Gameboy Player.

Btw: Joytech Wii Power Station bulk anyone?

Click here to see what's it about.

Wiichargable!

Has anyone bought the classic pad yet? I'm not bothering with it until some of my favourite SNES games appear (that would be Mario World and... Mario World... biggrin.gif )

Mario 64 with the GC pad is brilliant.

I've got one from my trip to Singapore, and it is an absolute joy to behold playing on this for the VC titles. I know You can use the Wavebird for wireless-ness, but the receiver sticking out is not a pretty sight.

Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, Toejam & Earl, Super Mario Bros, R-Type, Urban Champion and Street Fighter 2: World Warrior.

You heard it here first , folks! wink.gif
*
LOL, im quoting myself! Remember this post, like 3 or 4 pages back? Stringfellow now brings you the official news!

QUOTE
North Pole News: Special Christmas Treat on the Way for Wii

This year Santa is getting some competition from another jolly guy with a
big belly and a red cap. We're talking about video game icon Mario™, of
course. As a special holiday surprise for Wii™ owners from Nintendo, the
original Super Mario Bros. ™ game for the Nintendo Entertainment System(R)
will appear in the Wii Shop Channel and be downloadable for 500 Wii Points.
Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to
download the game. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at
retail outlets.

The classic game will make Christmas morning extra special, just as it did
more than two decades ago. Super Mario Bros. reigns as perhaps the best-known
and most-played game on any video game system in history. More than 40.2
million copies of the game found their way into homes worldwide. In addition
to Super Mario Bros., other top-notch offerings available on Dec. 25 include:

* Street Fighter(R) II: The World Warrior (Super NES(R), 1-2 players,
800 Wii Points): This game revolutionized the fighting-game genre with
characters that had unique fighting skills, speed, special moves and
unique endings.
* Super Castlevania(R) IV (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Simon
Belmont uses his trusty whip to fight the powers of evil on his way to
Dracula's Castle.
* Toe Jam & Earl™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Two
fun-loving aliens crash on Earth and must find 10 pieces of their
spaceship so they can get back home to Planet Funkotron.
* R-TYPE(R) (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This is a
completely faithful port - right down to the character details - of the
famous shooting-game masterpiece.

Games available on Jan. 1 include:
* Baseball (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Play nine innings of
fierce sandlot competition with classic NES graphics.
* Urban Champion™ (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Don't let the
big, bad bully of the neighborhood push you around! Players fight for
the right to walk the street.

In just five weeks the library of classic games available through the Wii
Shop Channel has grown to 33 titles. Every Monday at 9 a.m. Pacific, Nintendo
adds more classic games to the channel. For detailed information about each
game, visit Nintendo's Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com.

Merry Christmas INDEED! rclxm9.gif Time to buy more Wii Points!

Alright, im all set up for this next VC onslaught, just bought 5000 Wii Points using the Brazil hack, and now waiting for both the Wii Opera Internet Channel (today! Please come out before i go to work today cry.gif), and for the new VC games for Christmas.

By the way, im going to Melbourne again today, so if there are any requests for any Wii accessories and stuff, i'll be glad to look it up while im there. Dont know if there are still any left, since Christmas shoppers would have mobbed the stores clean.

It should be tonight. When Forecast launched on 20th, I got the message from Ninty on 19st Dec, 9pm-ish. So yeah, expect an email from Ninty(maybe!) today, if you're Connect24 is on.

With this, you can now stream movies, music and photos to your Wii on Opera as well! A user in NeoGAF forum had installed Orb 2.0, and got all his media content stored in his media server made available using Orb, streamed to Opera. How cool is that!? drool.gif

From user BocoDragon of NeoGAF:-

QUOTE
Someone wanting to create an ORB tutorial? It'd be fine for everyone not familiar with the program

It's very simple really.

1. Download the Orb program from Orb.com, which will install itself to be launched upon startup.

(I can't remember at which point you set up an account with Orb... but it's like "signing up for hotmail" simple)

2. Right click on the Orb logo in the system tray and choose Configuration, specify where your music/movie/photo folders are (depending on what you want to stream)

3. Go to the orb.com website, where you will login with your username and password that you've created. You may want to click on the preferences and choose which video format is best to stream in (for Wii you want the Flash player!)

Now you can just browse folders... or browse via an iTunes-like listing of all your music or movies. There's a start page portal that you can customize with certain channels of your own content.... say a random picture from your pictures folder, and the 5 most recently added movies and music, for an example.

I ask around fora wavebird controller. They are out of stock. Since the original gamecube controller is around RM110. So the wavebirs wil be more expensive. If you want mine. Im selling it for RM30. The catch is you have to fix the circuit in there.

Wii Opera Internet Channel is ONLINE! Posting this via my Wii, US owners go get yours NOW!

Word of caution, the download servers are swamped right now, so be patient, download will be slow. If you get a green Luigi during download, it will time-out your download. Try again, and make sure you get a red Mario. I think the packet data are represented by the coins, while the installation progress is represented by the 3 boxes. Enjoy!

ERmm nope, i updated and installed the Internet Channel , im still at home, bro. Going to work at 5:30pm later, my flight is at 9:35pm.

I typed all that using the virtual keyboard inside Wii, using the predictive text input as well. To scroll you need to press B, and point to the arrow direction on the page. Word of caution, it will be BLURRYYYYYY! Zooming in is the only way to see clearly. Also, the browser adds black bars to my screen, not sure if its just the 16:9 setup im using or it is there for the 4:3 as well.

Hmm something funny is happening to my Wii. Whenever I load the browser and search for a page, it gives me this distorted signal on my TV.

Anybody else experience this problem?

Tabbed Wii web browsing
All you do is open up your Wii browser, and visit the address http://team-dsx.net/ds/basic.php. Once you go there, a little tab will pop up in your browser. You click the image to the left, which allows you to open new tabs.

Wii vs. Gamecube Part 1: The Launch

10 Similarities:

1. Gamecube and Wii launched last!
2. Gamecube and Wii have no DVD Player
3. Both systems had no Mario at launch
4. Big exclusive third-party game for Cube was Rogue Leader, Red Steel for Wii
5. No online gameplay titles at launch
6. Both systems are built from the same architecture
7. Both systems had huge support going into launch
8. Both systems were designed with a "family-friendly" approach
9. Gamecube launched beside Xbox, Wii launched beside PS3
10. Both systems were sold at a profit for Nintendo

10 Differences:

1. Backwards Compatibility
2. Wii had at least a 90% sellout rate on launch day in North America, Gamecube had only a 42% sellout rate on launch day.
3. Wii was released in North America first
4. Wii had a bundled game (Wii Sports) and had a higher price tag
5. Gamecube's big first-party game was Luigi's Mansion, while Wii's had a massive game in the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
6. Wii is launched with a brand new control mechanism
7. Gamecube was directly competing with Microsoft and Sony, Wii is indirectly competing with the rest
8. Wii delivered an online service (without gameplay) on day one
9. Wii has the backing of a different management team from Reggie Fils-Aime to Satoru Iwata
10. Wii has the backing power of the Nintendo DS, while Gamecube was launched in the same year as the Game Boy Advance

PS3s Being Traded For Wiis

So, first people camp out in front of Best Buys for days at a time to get the PS3, and then they trade them for Nintendo Wiis. Seriously. Tony Conrad, CEO and Founder of Sphere, pointed this out to us and we had to see it to believe it. There are people out there trying to trade their PS3s for Nintendo Wiis and some of them are offering to take a loss. In order to check out exactly how widespread this phenomenon is, I had to venture into the dangerous, uncharted waters of craigslist.org and start doing a little searching of my own.[cool.gif

For forecast channel, all you need to do is update your Wii system. For the internet channel, you'll have to go Wii shop channel and download it from wii ware.

Congratulation on your purchases, welcome to Wii world smile.gif

first.. you should be connected to the internet... then choose either one of the channels (forecast, shop, or news)... then it'll ask you if you want to do an update... just follow the instructions and that's it..

^ Well, you can just run the Forecast Channel and hit update, or you can do into system setting, run Internet Test connection and it will prompt you to update. Or, on the 3rd page of Wii Settings, there's an Update System button too, either way.

free shipping lar, plus the waiting time...1-1.5 weeks, as usual......well, at least its better than giving n xtra 60-40 bucks to cutthroat local importers....tsk tsk, if only the percentage of increase wasnt that high compared to normal price...
