Actually Pedalspot's prices are always higher when they take over a product rights. Look at Rockshox nowadays. Anyway, Brompton's prices were very hard hit by our currency's slide. They started with 5.8K if I am not mistaken and now it is in the 7K region for the 6 speed. If you are really interested, there are 4 more units here in Taiping from the 1st batch. Initially the minimum order was 10, so I guess the shop sold 6 already and really trying to get rid of the other 4.  When I moved here, I had the chance to actually buy 2 (EPF withdrawal) and the boss says he can give me a very good price (old price) and my guess was less than 12K for 2 bikes but he did not want to confirm till I actually wanted.

So, I was sleepless for a few nights, whether to get it or not. Then I decided to get another mini velo to complement the other that my wife rides, which is more practical to me as I don't need to commute anywhere and I can fit in either 2 mountain bikes or 2 mini velos into my car easily (without any racks) . KTMB Komuter here allows bikes for an extra RM2.00 per bike (full size) so Brompton doesn't not make sense to my needs.
The mini velo (modified with straight bar) are much more agile, lighter, faster, wider gear range. more comfort (chromoly) and most of all it cost less than a Brompton even with a 20 speed Ultegra groupset.

That's why I skipped the Brompton which I have been pondering on since my Dahon days. But if you are really interested, head here to Taiping, only 4 left! Maybe slightly less than 6K,brand new! 2 black edition (racing green and lagoon blue) and black and the final one red.

Hi All...

First posting...

I used to own Chopper (purple)  back in the 70s... and have not been cycling since. Am also not very familiar with bike specs... but have shortlist the following... Tern Link N8, Dahon Vitesse and Dahon Boardwalk as they are within my budget.

Would appreciate it that the more experienced members (sifu / otai) here could provide some suggestions on which of the 3 would be a better choice. And also please advice if there are any other brands/ models that could be considered.

Thanks.

Both me and wife are using the Performer mini velo. Got them from Penang actually. The distributor in KL seems to be more interested in their road bikes only.

Deny,
The bike was some 40 years ago. I don't have it anymore.
You may google Releigh Chopper for some images.

Btw, if you do not intend to shout or raise your voice, pls use small letter (not capital letter) when you post.

When i put my 6 speed up for sale, no one was game enough to hand over the cash. This was for a near new bike though not the current model. As they all ride the same, what I sold for was only RM4500.

Brompton will hold its price, unless a new model is introduced. If you buy second hand you will get your money back.

Are there better bikes for the money? Absolutely, but there's only one Brompton. biggrin.gif

This was the same model and colour of the Raleigh Chopper that I ride to school in the 76s. Those days it cost RM265.00 ( a normal Ah Soh bike was only RM65.00 then ). This is already the Mark 2, second edition. You can differentiate it because Mk 2 has the handlebar swept forward. I saw one or two in Mudah.my but they were not complete and mostly have the their gear box missing. They are selling it for quite a sum as well. For those really who really wants attention, I can bet you, you will get the most attention if you ride one , refurbished in Car Free Day. Guaranteed! Bromptons are getting too common nowadays. The 3 speed Sturmey Archers are not a problem as they are not very much different from those in Brompton nowadays. But Sturmey Archer has been taken over by a Taiwanese company already so they are not made in UK anymore.

This is the Mark 1. Higher rear which was useless actually, maybe carry another friend at the back biggrin.gif But if we sit too far back to recline, the front of the bikes comes up very fast!

And last year, Raleigh did a small production of limited units to satisfy the request of many former Chopper riders. Only last year they did it in limited numbers. But they looked different.

Hey, mine was a red Mark2. I often carry three other people on mine, of course we were a lot smaller back then!

ettige,
thanks for the images. it brings back some good memories... devil.gif
i prefer the mk2 seat and gear position as compared to the limited produced.

mine was the purple mk2.
the handlebar could get a bit loose and it was actually not bad.
i could push a little when i wanted to ride faster and pull when i wanted to relax... haha.

good idea with refurb one (KL car free day). thumbsup.gif

~110kg, not confident with foldies, so I got a basikal half cut from scrapyard.
steel frame,
6 speed shimano sis 14-28t,
Dia.170mm 48t crankset,
no name full alloy breaks + lever.
1" threaded steel fork
Adjustable quill.

will modify the frame into folding and replace parts if I like the frame enough.
(ya, in my book, changing to expensive parts is just replacing and not modify or up-grading)

After new tires and tubes. some servicing, Hafty 300buck outlay for a ~20kg mini velo. which I can squeeze into my car backseat without removing the front wheel.

Attached Image

Bicycle is suppose to be affordable. get a transformer truck if I want something expensive.

chop it up… maybe. to modify (in my book) means making something to change form or function.
