SS Strider Plus 500W/Gigabyte Odin GT 550W/Seasonic Silence Pro/FSP Hexa. They cost RM199/RM169/RM199/RM159 respectively.

hi all,
can i know what's the minimum required for 6850?
c2d, 2x2gb reaper at max volt, 4x sata 3.5", maybe about 10watts for fans.

my concern is for the power to be rock stable, stock cpu and gfx speed, max ram performance. unstable power is gonna crash the system easily, abundance power is waste.
currently using epsilon 420w, which i dont think have enough juice for the gfx upgrade. >_<

pls help to give suggestion and price. thanks.

The minimum for the HD6850 would be 400W, while the recommended is 450W. smile.gif.

really? means i can stick to my psu?
coz my current 9800gt green ed. sometimes not so stable when gaming. im confident with temperature and my case flow, so i think psu might need upgrade.

It's not recommended to stick to the minimum recommendation. Get a power supply like the FSP Hexa 500W. smile.gif

Something with ~350W on the 12V rail(s) would be more than enough for your needs. How much are you willing to spend?

It can be gotten for RM169 from Jayacom. However, its availability might be very limited as it's a very sought after power supply due to it being modular, 80 Plus certified as well as being a very good power supply. smile.gif

dont really have a specific budget for that. my personal guideline will always be around the 200-250 price range.
i dont mind goin up to 350 just for the sake of stability, or maybe can consider more, but prefer to do that only if i dont have choice.
again the focus is rock solid stability of the power line under load.

Well, you can get the Seasonic X560 for RM350~,that's a rock solid PSU but imo it isn't worth the price. The Odin GT is a good PSU but it's rather hard to find these days at that price (RM169].With that said i recommend the Corsair CX500 that is usually sold RM220,it has 400W of power on the 12V rail and it's based on a proven platform.

i'd think 400w to be a wee bit low.. am hoping a minimum of 450w actually, and coincides with the recommendation above, since my i kinda feel my 420 is a bit maxed out.
anyway mind sharing why u think the seasonic its not worth the price?
thanks.

Although the Seasonic X-560 is an excellent power supply ( the X-series of Seasonic is very good according to reviews around the net ), it's priced at RM359, which is rather expensive. You have some other alternatives out there e.g the Silverstone Strider Essential 600W which is cheaper, albeit not as good as the Seasonic X-560 in quality. In addition to that, if your budget is at RM359, then you have the option of getting the Seasonic Silence Pro 750W for RM329 from the Garage Sales section. It ( 750W ) has the ability to output more power than the Seasonic X-560 and it costs cheaper, although it's less efficient and it's not modular. In other words, the Seasonic X-series power supplies are premium power supplies and you should only go for them if you really have the money to spend and you would like to get yourself the best of everything. smile.gif

ic. but doesnt all modular power supply comes with a premium price?
i read a bit on the seasonics, seems like a very solid performer, tho im not very keen on the modular power design.
too many connectors is bound to introduce some problems, at least, that's my personal experience when learing electronics.

btw, anyone here notice a difference in electricity bills/power consumption usage when using higher wattage power to run lower load (eg, 700w psu runs 400w load) vs lower rated power running max load (450w psu runs 400w load)?
hypothetically the 700w running 400w shud run more efficient since it doesnt strain the psu, and consume less power to handle the load.. or isit?

Not all modular power supplies are expensive, or perhaps your definition of expensive is different smile.gif.

Anyway, yes, technically a power supply with the ability to output e.g 800W that runs a system consuming only around 400W, which is 50% of its capabilities should have a higher efficiency than a power supply with 450W of power running a 400W of power. Most of the power supplies runs has the best efficiency at half their load and reduced efficiency at higher or lower loads according to most of the power supply efficiency graph I have seen before, for example these two :

thanks for the explanantion. Its actually interesting that getting a 700w psu would give a higher efficiency rate than a lower power.
im more of a function over form kinda person. modular is just form for me. >_<

anyways,
lets say for around rm250, up to slightly above rm300, what good choice should i be looking at? anything goes here.. drool.gif

Well, actually a better choice than the available power supplies in that range would be the Gigabyte Odin GT 550W that costs RM169 from Jayacom. Unfortunately, its availability may be a problem, and if it's really unavailable, then you can choose to go with the Silverstone Strider Essential 600W for RM279 from Viewnet, or the Seasonic Silence Pro 750W for RM329 ( without postage cost ) if you're able to spend more than RM300.

Xigmatek 750W? I thought that is quite old already? my previous PSU tongue.gif

new one is 700W. And the answer is no, why?
Seasonic 750W which is much better, cost cheaper and IINM, the warranty is longer.
