Seiko Bell-matic alarm watch from 1968

QUOTE
Seiko Holdings Corporation (セイコーホールディングス株式会社 Seikō Hōrudingusu Kabushiki-gaisha?) (TYO: 8050), more commonly known simply as Seiko (/ˈseɪko/ say-koh), is a Japanese company that manufactures and sells watches, clocks, electronic devices, semiconductors and optical products.

The company was founded in 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop called "K. Hattori" (服部時計店 Hattori Tokeiten?) in the Ginza area of Tokyo, Japan. Eleven years later, in 1892, he began to produce clocks under the name Seikosha (精工舎 Seikōsha?), meaning roughly "House of Exquisite Workmanship". According to Seiko's official company history, titled "A Journey In Time: The Remarkable Story of Seiko" (2003), Seiko is a Japanese word meaning "exquisite" or "success" ("exquisite" is usually written 精巧 from Chinese jīngqiǎo, while the meaning "success" is usually written 成功 from Chinese chénggōng)

The first watches produced under the Seiko brand appeared in 1924. In 1969, Seiko introduced the Astron, the world's first production quartz watch; when it was introduced, it cost the same as a medium-sized car. Seiko later went on to introduce the first quartz chronograph. In 1985, Orient and Seiko established a joint factory.

The company was incorporated (K. Hattori & Co., Ltd.) in 1917 and was renamed Hattori Seiko Co., Ltd. in 1983 and Seiko Corporation in 1990. After reconstructing and creating its operating subsidiaries (such as Seiko Watch Corporation and Seiko Clock Inc.), it became a holding company in 2001 and was renamed Seiko Holdings Corporation as of July 1, 2007.

Seiko is perhaps best known for its wristwatches, all of which were at one time produced entirely in-house. This includes not only major items such as microgears, motors, hands, crystal oscillators, batteries, sensors, LCDs but also minor items such as the oils used in lubricating the watches and the luminous compounds used on the hands and the dials. Currently watch movements are made in Shizukuishi, Iwate (SII Morioka Seiko Instruments), Ninohe, Iwate (SII Ninohe Tokei Kogyo), Shiojiri, Nagano (Seiko Epson) and their subsidiaries in China, Malaysia and Singapore. The fully integrated in-house production system is still practised for luxury watches in Japan.

Seiko produces both quartz and mechanical watches of varying prices. The least expensive are around ¥4,000 (US$45) (sold under the brand Alba); the most expensive (Credor JURI GBBX998) costs ¥50,000,000  (US$554,000)

Seiko mechanical watches are highly prized by collectors: from the Seiko "5" series (the 5 reflects five key features of the watch, namely automatic winding, day and date display in a single window—rare at the time, water resistant, recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position and durable case and bracelet—i.e. steel),[5] which is the most common, to the highly prized luxury "Credor," "King Seiko," and "Grand Seiko" lines.

So lastly.. Why Seiko?

As my grandma used to say on the topic of watches - If you rich man then buy Rolex, otherwise buy Seiko.. only Seiko is accurate and lasting.

Truthfully, the missus bought it for my birthday many moons ago. The original rubber strap disintegrated, so i thought it'd be more colourful with the nato strap.

Everdying yeah, if compared with SG then definitely more expensive. But I glanced at the sticker price for a SKX007 just a few days back, iirc RM1.2k? Insanity. If no more hook-ups then this is probably the cheapest local stock I have come across. Luckily, I already have both (and both from SG!).

Yea, there was a discussion on it, and no one is clear on where he found that info.

You can pretty much still get it in main channels like Yodabashi or wherever you get your watches.

there was a thread somewhere where someone mentioned a rakuten japan dealer was told by seiko to stop selling skx overseas.
my guess is stocks slowly drying up now.

IMHO... No watch exceeding 42mm case size should have 20mm lugwidth...

Especially a watch as hefty as sumo

For quartz, that means the battery is low.
Time to change the battery.

However for kinetic? I dunno.

It means the batt reserve is low. Since its a new acquisition, try to charge it up. Kinetic need a lot of swings to charge it up. Hope attached pages from the manual helps.

Edit. PS. If anyhow also can't get 30sec swing of second hand, then maybe the capacitor needs changing.

Just sent my gf's old Seiko 5 in for a fix at ahpek shop. He's charging me RM220 to change hairspring and balance wheel, along with a service. I think its a bit pricey, but want to try something other than Thong Sia. I've sent the watch in to TS twice in 3 years now, and every 12 months or so, the watch starts beating slower. Sometimes, it stops moving, even when being worn on the wrist.

Anyway, ahpek says 1-2 weeks to complete, so let's see how it goes. In the meantime, already purchased a replacement Seiko 5 for her. She hasn't realized hers has gone missing.

Hi Guys, so finally my baby tuna has arrived from Singapore! yeayy..

Here we go
Attached Image

But I got questions about its condition:

1. The rotating bezel is very very tight that needs more force to rotate it.. More over it is surrounded by sharp-pointing-ends like monster's bezel style, makes my finger painful to do so. I have compared it with the same model in local shop and they happened to be looser, more convenient to rotate.
Is it going to be loosen by time to time I kept rotate it? Or should I ask for replacement unit?

2. The Day display is English/Spanish instead of English/Roman Numbers as what I see in local shop.
Does it mean something? Like made from where, market for where?

Other than that I pretty much satisfied with this unit biggrin.gif

bezel tight is normal cos it varies, before i bought mine i tried 3 different ones...1 was very tight...mine is still ok.
just bring back thong sia ask them if they can loosen it, i seriously doubt can exchange.
spanish means u probably bought a grey set.

bezel tight is normal cos it varies, before i bought mine i tried 3 different ones...1 was very tight...mine is still ok.
just bring back thong sia ask them if they can loosen it, i seriously doubt can exchange.
spanish means u probably bought a grey set.
*
Yea right..
This is the deal when purchase something online...can't really test on hand...
I purchased from ebay seller bro (mad-watch) and the warranty card written as skywatches. Not sure if they are the same?

Do you think Thongsia will help with this kind of purchase history? i.e. a grey set as you got mentioned

*
wow 220 for the hairspring? What movement? If 7s26, you can easily buy cheap new seiko 5 and just take the whole movement to use.. i remember i bought a seiko 5 with 7s26 for under 250.

yvliew this is a ladies Seiko 5, I think it is a 4206 movement, or at least that's what is printed on the dial. And yes, I have actually bought a donor watch with the same movement to cannibalize, but then ahpek asked me... why not get a new watch and then fix the existing one; then can have two watches. Which kind of made sense to me, and so I went for it.

Btw, the watch itself cost RM3xx 8 years ago, and I've spent more money on service that what I've paid for the watch now. I am hoping to fix the problem once and for all, and am only retaining the watch for sentimental value.

Just a little bit update.
I just called Thongsia and explain this issue and he advised me to just rotate the bezel under tap water or with soap.
He said it's usually just dirt. I did it and it's working hahaha..
Hopefully this cheap method is a useful info for someone else with same issue wink.gif

Just my Orient (still acceptable since it's owned by Seiko)... Didn't bring my travel box along with me this trip anyway... Why carry more stuff when you have the option to travel light?

More pics later... but was exciting to see a couple of pieces I have in the museum display cases too.

This post may be 56k heavy...

I'll dump the pics in a spoiler tag anyway and hopefully they won't hurt so much...

Front of the Seiko Museum... At this point I had goosebumps!
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Signed up for the guided tour (requires advance reservation)... Got a short history of timekeeping in general and a view of some of the landmarks in timekeeping history.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Here's my first piece in common with the museum... The Railway Watch... which according to history, was made after a railway accident was caused by one of the clocks used being off by 4 minutes. (I have the one on the far left)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Interesting exhibit with the sport history of Seiko... This one is of a pressure sensitive plate used for timing swimming events. If you hit exactly 9.59 by hitting the plate, you win some kind of prize. I failed obviously... got 9.8 or something like that.

Fast forward a little to the 2nd floor (1st floor is general history of timekeeping)... and it's all about the history of Seiko up until the present.

Of course, the Laurel was there.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The first Grand Seiko... along with some King Seiko from roughly the same era...
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

And then a group shot of the early divers from Seiko...
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

There was also a small GS exhibit... of which of course the GMT Chrono SD is my favourite.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

At the end of the tour, you see a remnant of the original Seiko factory that burned down... where Seiko lost almost everything, but still offered to replace ALL of the timepieces that customers had lost in the fire.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

After all that, there's a small museum shop with a limited selection of Seiko, Lukia (womens line), Grand Seiko, and Credor. I really wanted to be able to see the Credor Minute Repeated, but apparently they had just returned it to a store. I'll be honest and say that the GS Quartz is much more beautiful in person... maybe even better than the Credor quartz in terms of movement.

Here's a short clip from the GS display case. I also made the cardinal sin of recording in portrait...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm honestly quite attracted by that second hand. It might not be the SD sweep, but there's something very smooth about it. Hope everyone enjoyed the tour... and tomorrow I'll be heading over to WAKO.

There's English explanations on everything that has an explanation. If there's Jap text, there's probably English text too. But there's maybe 10-20% of the items that have text on them... so the remaining 80%+ is textless whatever language you speak. The guide helps explain all that (things like water clocks and how they work, etc), if you want... Otherwise, you can easily go without a guided tour and just appreciate the pieces on your own.

Don't need to. If there's Jap text, there's an English translation there.

For everything else, either you have the guide to explain things to you... or you just walk around without a guide and just look. However, I cannot confirm that you can walk around without a guide... this "might" be required.

There's definitely a slight difference in how the second hand ticks between quartz watches... if I had a quartz GS, it'd be easier to show it side by side... but unfortunately... haha.

Dropped by WAKO today... but had somewhat limited time, so didn't check prices of anything.

No new OR old... Side effect of growing up and having other responsibilities that need to be handled first... I was very tempted to pick up the MM300, but I don't really have that much available to just throw away at the moment. There's always next time...

Read your manual, never change the date at night...
Calibrate your watch and see if it gains or loses time overnight...

Place your watch in different positions and see if it gains/loses time...
dial up, crown down, crown up, etc...

Lol, why did you use months instead of simple 5+ years? Anway, yes - the chrono can be reset. I think it has been posted before, but on an older thread. You can probably Google this up as well. One of my older Seiko chronos would not reset back to zero and when I sent it in to one of the local Seiko ADs, they managed to figure it out. Maybe also worth a shot calling Thong Sia to enquire.

Yes, off center long time ago but I don't know to re-calibrate back.

just realized this morning when I woke up,

the watch eventually died, coz even the sec not moving at all. (stop at 0515)

guess need replace the battery...

hopefully after replace battery can back to normal...

I forgot mine what model is that,
But referring back watch info,
I saw 7T94.

Just replaced the battery cost RM20 and no warranty..
Everything back to normal after spend some time to readjust the STOPWATCH Minute and Sec Hands.

Recently quite racun Sea Urchin. Cheap Seiko 5. But with the Sumo and SKX007, do you think this is even worth adding on to the list? It risks sitting in a drawer like the other two...

Yesterday 11.11 sales I ordered skx007 from lazada, sold by Malaysia watches. Anyone had any experience with them? It was originally RM899 but yesterday they have 17% off plus a rm100 off coupon. Total paid for it including shipping is RM651. Was it a good deal?

I did a quick search online and found that normal titanium would react with the air and "self-heal"? I am not sure whether will a diashield titanium work the same way or not sweat.gif

Is there anything I can do about the scratch?

that self heal is probably after donkey years.
diashield u can't do much unless obviously u remove the coating then can polish like normal.

Diashield cannot be polish... so learn to live with it... its a watch it will get scratches and stuff... unless you keep inside a safe deposits... then why the heck you buy a watch and not wear it?

ya, saw the shots earlier.
looks like got duped by seiko, or they're holding on to the what they know will be the most sellable black version with bracelet.
thought the SRP773 was black...zzz.
so looks like the SRP775 will have to be my first target...shouldnt be hard to get.

ya, saw the shots earlier.
looks like got duped by seiko, or they're holding on to the what they know will be the most sellable black version with bracelet.
thought the SRP773 was black...zzz.
so looks like the SRP775 will have to be my first target...shouldnt be hard to get.
SRP777 can pass first since no bracelet.

You have good taste, Sir ...mainly because I'll be aiming for the 775 as well..

SRP777 good enough...the gold font bezel gives it a classic look.
not sure i want the regular black yet since still got skx...but its still my 2nd choice once a bracelet version comes out which so far no sign of.

that's cos its one fugly piece and probably not many buying.
just cos it has tuna like lugs doesnt mean it falls under the tuna family and can justify its higher price.
imo it's just an overpriced monster with tuna lugs...and at that price 4r36? zzz.

RRP stated is the same as 007 so we can expect price here to be less than RM 1 K like the sk,007 ? Hopefully lol
If they are selling in Jan 2016 then the seiko factory in JBaru is already assembling them right now. So near.

Just got my Cocktail Time from Seiya. The watch looks fabulous, and the leather strap isn't as stiff as I've read. Very happy with it... except for one thing. There appears to be a strand of white hair or something between the 1 and 2 o'clock markers. Its not visible under normal lighting, but shine a bright light from the side and it becomes visible. Damn. What do you guys think, just accept it or send it back? Dunno how much shipping will cost...

Having dealt with them before, they will accept it if you send it back, however might not be worth the time.

If it's just some dust, I advice you to take it to Thongsia and see what they can do. Mine have a really really really tiny indentation that can be seen up-close microscopic level, and they were happy to change it but unfortunately their policy was anything under 5mm (iirc) was not considered a defect sad.gif

When you say yours had an indentation, was it an SARB065? Asking because Thongsia does not carry the model since its made for Japan only. Not sure if they would entertain a request to do it.

I've squinted at it for some time now, and I don't think it's a loose particle. It looks more like a scratch or indentation from behind the dial.

its so hard to see from the pic as it still looks like dust.
but yea, its so trivial to return it if its dust.
so just send it to thongsia or any watch repairer u know to see if it can be cleaned first.

Yep, was the same watch..

You can email Seiya and asked, while at the same time go to check what can Thongsia do, though they might not be able to claim warranty as its within the defect acceptable limits
However usually Seiya will exchange it, can't remember about the shipping cost cover as I decided it was too minor to go through the hassle.

Mine's the 6r15C and the indentation was at a different area from what I remembered those with the B suffered. Nothing visible really unless you put a magnifier to it.

More of a peeve than anything at the time.

Frankly speaking. I think the shop I go in ximending has more variety than a large Yodobashi since the latter concentrates only on popular models.

BTW.. I called dips on the srp777 di. Shop fella gonna call as soon as it arrives.

No idea. Btw.. Wako is not for bang for buck.

Apparently Thong Sia no longer have replacement parts for this, need to look for some "ah pek" watch shop to repair this. Any recommendation?

Result is the same. Lurk ebay.

Don't think shops would have a vintage quartz movement lying around.

Sent my gf's Seiko 5 to ahpek shop. but don't think he has any spare parts lying around. Last he mentioned, he would get from Thong Sia too. That particular watch looks very small, btw.

Anyway, mounted my Monster on a nylon NATO:

Mine's the 6r15C and the indentation was at a different area from what I remembered those with the B suffered. Nothing visible really unless you put a magnifier to it.

More of a peeve than anything at the time.
Yep,all the best.

I took it to Thong Sia, bad luck its not a piece of fiber but a scratch. Have to send it back to Japan I guess. Isnit safe to send through pos Malaysia with tracking?

Actually I also noticed a very very very slight dent above the date window too. I guess this is the usual defect you hear for this model. But the dent on mine is really minor and I can live with it. The scratch... not so much.

What a pain in the ass.

Pos Laju is actually very decent; they're quick, especially if you sending an item out as Parcel Express. I used to ship sneakers outside of KL regularly. Certainly the cheapest courier service out there. GDEX is pretty good as well, and not too expensive.

Ah, unfortunate then. Take the others advice on shipping back if you intend to do so, thus far I've not recalled issues with Seiya on exchange or refund, though it depends on your agreement with him.

Thanks guys. I was looking at DHL and the cost was RM 100 plus RM 45 if I wanted insurance. Hopefully Pos Laju or GDex is cheaper. Would like to insure just in case.

Guys, I just checked the gdex website and the price quoted for a 0.5kg shipment to Japan is RM 240! DHL is only RM 100 in comparison.

Not sure how much Pos Laju is. May drop into one tomorrow to find out

Green dialed Seikos seem to be quite popular in Thailand. When I was in BKK some weeks back, I saw some bing advertised at BTS stations. Oh, I also saw a White Sumo at the airport.

The colour combination seems a bit weird.. Green, Black & gold bezel and steel band.
Is is looks way better if the steel band replace to those Nato strap or leather strap?

actually, looking at that german...
the titanium carbide should refer to the bezel, not the insert.
and if u look at the coke and pepsi bezels, u can see its pvd like...which can probably only mean its a titanium carbide nitride coating with most likely a titanium bezel...similar to the pvd tuna cases tongue.gif

Ceramic insert like rolex and omega will be expensive so I agree it could be pvd hard face on bezel top. Any type scratch resistant bezel is better than plain aluminium insert though.

order from dabrands ebay.
basically rm600, sent by fedex in 2 days, escaped GST.

u could also go thru his bidding war, which usually ends up u only saving about usd20 or sometimes less...provided u win.
so lazy wait 1 week with no assurance of win unless do a stupidly high bid, so better just buy-it-now and reach 2 days.

Just received the replacement Cocktail Time yesterday. No scratch on the dial. But with very close scrutiny there is actually a blue dot beneath the 'i' in the 'SEIKO' word. I just don't have luck. But its a really really minor dot, barely noticeable under a magnifying glass so I'm content

What I'm a little frustrated with is that the replacement seems to have worse accuracy. The previous one was losing 2-3 seconds a day, this one has gained 10 seconds in a day. Hopefully it calms down. Do watches calm down after some time? Or does it just stay that way right out of the box.

Oh I got Seiya to throw in a free spring bar fool. It costs USD12 on his site. No idea why such a simple tool costs that much.

Accuracy depends on a few factors, e.g. position, power reserve etc. +10 doesn't seem too bad, give it a few days and time it again over a longer period.

I bought the Burgeon spring bar tool, which does the job no better than the ones I got for free when buying straps.

if ur a sucker for accuracy, +10 is more desirable than -2/-3.
say after 3 days, u only need to stop second hand for 30secs instead of 51-54secs and then also u have to advance minute hand by 1... where got time tongue.gif
nowadays i dont care already, as long as its not running out of specs.

im now wondering if those are import sets? trying to take advantage of market?
cos usually i stalk both singapore and philippine seiko forum before a new model appears as they usually get it first...then only couple weeks later arrive in malaysia.
but so far both forums have no news on official sets there.
heck, even WUS also abit quiet on them.

so yea, im gonna take a wild guess its seller trying to take advantage of the stupid euro pricing and trying to make a quick buck...tho i hope to be proven wrong...

I noticed the deviation of my Seiko varies depend how I position my watch when I am not wearing it. I tried putting the watch horizontally face up once and it was off by +10s one night.

Now I am putting it either 12 vertically up and am able to maintain the deviation at +1s/day. Contented laugh.gif

Guys, thinking of getting a brown leather strap for my Seiko Cocktail Time. Any good sites to recommend for leather straps? I'm not looking for something fancy or expensive. Something around RM 50-150 will do.

Most sites carry straps way above this price. I looked at Hirch, they some for around USD30 which is still OK, but adding in shipping and the cost goes up. Any sites that ship from nearby countries or that have lower shopping charges?

Just want to dress the watch down a bit, and a brown strap should do that. No NATO straps for this. Pairs well if I wear brown shoes too.

Haha... I heard about that before. You wear it mostly face up during the day and put it face down during sleep so the gain and loss offset each other. Somehow it didn't work for my SKX007 when I tried it for 2-3 days. It was still losing 7-8 seconds per day, the same as before.

Probably China via ali or taobao, but it's pretty hit and miss unless someone with prior experience recommends it.

Hah, too used to shopping online now, forgot watch stores here probably carry straps too.

Shell cordovan? I'd rather get a pair of shoes in that first before a watch strap!

pricewise very likely scalper's pricing, in line with what was published by some euro site awhile back.
the actual retail is still expected to be much lower."

zzz, really rm2k? fish that.
after 30% still rm1.4k...totally unjustified pricing from seiko and basically approaching sumo prices...makes no sense...unless of cos seiko planning a major price increase over its whole range.

uhh hanif...why did u say they retail around usd350?
rm2014 = usd467, rm1823 = usd420.

anyway, dunno if its ur pic, but i highly doubt it...but the 6oclock index on that black one looks to be printed off-center.
chapter ring looks fine seeing as 12 and 3 all ok.
and seiko got the nerve to increase prices...pui.

i handled the 4 turtles today.
the bracelet version feels quite heavy.
side profile is meh, just like 007 only.

the gold one, i was scrutinizing it, and while it looked like the bezel was off-center...looking closer it was actually the whole dial that was off-center...zzz.

the rubber strap meanwhile is pretty cool, its similar to the prospex kinetic gmt sardine/tuna/whatever so basically silicone with a metal keeper.

oh ya, the indices actually have metal / metal coated plastic surrounds just like the 4r36 monster...pretty nice touch.

im now kinda swaying towards the black on rubber...hmmm...

Tuna silicon strap cost rm700 lol. I have been wearing for a few days and can confirm the new strap is very comfy. The new s.steel keeper is less bulky and even the buckle is a new chunky and solid design. This is definitely a good rubber strap and might explain the small diff in price compared to bracelet models.

Seiya's earning model is the difference between RRP and discounted price.

My apologies. The sbdx017 is 216k yen and after 5% discount should be 205.2k yen.

Ripley? I saw it and wasn't really keen on it. Plus, I don't know why they keep producing thousands of pcs and calling them limited.

Not all models are affected by the offset dail. I can see the blue isn't affected and it's actually looking quite cool compared to others.

Only had the black and pepsi in store today when I swung by. Super expensive, and I refuse to buy for over 1k. I like the silicone strap, but I feel it fits a bit loose against the lugs?

The longer lugs actually make it look similar to 6105-8000. Just need a coin edge bezel and suitable dial and hand set. I am sure someone will do this mod later.
As for alignment he mentioned problem solved. BS my first unit close to perfect but 2 nd unit the 6 o'clock indice closer to 29 min. mark than 31 lol

uhh hanif...why did u say they retail around usd350?
rm2014 = usd467, rm1823 = usd420.

anyway, dunno if its ur pic, but i highly doubt it...but the 6oclock index on that black one looks to be printed off-center.
chapter ring looks fine seeing as 12 and 3 all ok.
and seiko got the nerve to increase prices...pui.
*
Those are my pics. Why would you say those pics aren't mine?
As I said, those are from a shop in Amcorp Mall.
I really didn't have much time to scrutinize them, so I didn't notice ant imperfections.

Anyway I just said USD350 for the prices after 20% discount.
That discount was offered to me as soon as I asked to see them.
So I guess that's their selling price.

I just came back from a family holiday in Hong Kong.
As I followed a tour, there was no time to visit the 2nd hand shops.
I was really disappointed.
Here's the only watch picture I managed to take there.

Yup.. that aside. If its me... I'll skip the "automatic", use the traditional red "Diver" and if absolutely have to... reduce the X size and put it on top of the 6 oclock marker like the old Suwa dial.

Clean and nice.

Hi guys,

My gf and i wanted to buy our first seiko watch together.
She was thinking of SNK809K2. Do you guys know any model which have the same/almost the same design as that but in a bigger diameter for me?
after serching the internet, found out SGZK15. Is there any other model which comparatively the same as SNK809 in term of design?
thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

So Taiwan first to get "made in Japan" turtles. Let's see if the QC is better.
From the picture of the 777 i notice the 6 o'clock indice is centered at 30 min which is good. K models nearer to 29 min.
