if this news/rumour is real, i find it dissapointing... sigh
a D40, 6MP, can't use other lenses except AF-S only.
supposedly 599 EURO.

anyway, no news about the D60 huh? it's supposed to be announced either this week or next week.

I actually came across this or D60, can't remember which while I was searching for my dslr. The design wasn't what I was looking for.
Too few buttons for me to press on the body.
I like to press buttons.

I doubt something like that will sell for 599 euro. That would be retarded.

This is supposed to be the model to bridge the gap between prosumer and DLSR, 599 Euro is abit too much i'll say. They've already took away the top LCD display, AF motor and recycled the D50/70 viewfinder (and possibly sensor from D50). Surely it could be cheaper.

Lets see what will happen in a few weeks time.. perhaps it's an indication of abundance of AF-S lenses coming soon? 50mm f/1.4 AF-S anyone? tongue.gif

You know what I will call that model ? Garbage
At that kinda design, noobs dun get to learn crap about photography, only lousy ergonomics and inconvenience. They might as well take it up and chuck it aside for an upgrade months later!

Yeah.. garbage to us who are already on top of the food chain, but what about auntie/uncle/grand ma/grand dad who can't be bothered with learning but want good quality pics? IMHO they are just targeting at a different consumer group.. a body and the two basic kit lense (18-55, 50-200) and maybe an external flash is all they ever need.

Those group won't even be BOTHERED with a huge chunky body that might break their old necks carrying that thing up the Great Wall of China or down Shanghai streets am I right? tongue.gif

Some one told me that they can't even match the white dot to the red dot when they wanna change lenses, gosh you wanna convince them just by merely telling them that the quality of DSLRs are much better than compacts? I rather sell them a 10MP compact digicam thank you very much tongue.gif

I think that model suites students better, you know, the "Which SLR is better? Which brand is better? I got a budget of so-and-so Ringgit but I am doing so-and-so course majoring in Photography bla bla bla" group icon_rolleyes.gif

Take another look. What huge chunky body? wink.gif Besides, it looks like a fine camera for those who want decent quality and will every only own the kit lens and maybe a cheap tele (of which there are many ppl). 6mp is definitely far more than required.

an external flash unit will add considerable weight to the camera and built in flash isn't exactly perfect.

my humble opinion is, D40 is very nice placed currently.

- why AF-S? Diam diam focus, faster than screw, got so many zoom lenses from cheap to pro. and since most people like to curi-snap, AF-S work like a wonder

- why 6Mp? a lot of consumer actually dont need more than 4mp, most of the time, they print 4R, and most of the time, the 6mp is too huge for the puny flash card they own

- 2.5" LCD? Consumer like mah, big big clear and sharp

- no-direct buttons? why bother these when u just wan great photo without hassle, AUTO work best for these people

- built in flash with ittl? ok, this pwned sipeh many flash system...

maybe i am fanboy hahaha

yea, and if they want a cheap tele, there is the 55-200 DX to go with it, or even the 70-300 AFS VR. this is really not much of an issue really, i mean, you dont see an F55 paired with a 70-200 VR everyday after all no?

D40? Well, if it's cheaper than the D50 then it would be of interest to me. And as for D60... Are Nikon really going to name it that way? I remember one of Canon's earliest DSLR models is the EOS D60 so who knows... with all those copyright infringement lawsuits...

It might be priced below 2k, honestly speaking, Nikon still does not have a HSM 50mm f1.8 yet ryte?
The D50 is still a steal at the current retail price despite being quite outdated now.
Its a good camera that is aimed at beginners but the non-compatiblity with older lenses are worth the concern.

Told you already mah ... foreign websites mah.
I never trust reviews from foreign websites, rather, I use them for reference but NOT to make decision whether to buy that particular model or not. Most of these jokers only want traffic to their websites so they can get more revenue from advertisers! All models of brands they also say good good good, marvelous marvelous marvelous .. in the end we also have to do our OWN survey and our OWN price comparison.

What's the point? sweat.gif

All models of brands they also say good good good, marvelous marvelous marvelous .. in the end we also have to do our OWN survey and our OWN price comparison.

What's the point? sweat.gif

Reminds me of the 2nd hand car market ...

Not anyone can afford to keep their cars at home while they go out and search for their next set of wheels. The used car ppl now had resorted to so many things to woo buyers i.e "Drive 1st Pay Later" Scheme" (thanks to Proton's 6 Months no Pay Promotion), Zero Deposit Promotion and the best one ... Free Astro. Can you imagine? Free Astro from buying a used car? blink.gif

A spoiled used camera market will benefit buyers in the long run but will kill sellers, which happens to be ppl like you and me also, wanting to dump our hardware for upgrades or even extra cash sad.gif

Generally I would give myself some space to inhale and exhale, especially when it's a used item. With a certain budget, I was thinking about a Canon EOS 1D, EOS 30D or a new 400D package, still pondering ...

Even used Nikon D1X and D1H units are very low priced now, ranging about RM3000 to about RM5000, lower than the EOS 1D which is about RM5000+. Imagine, those are professional, tough and weather-sealed bodies, you basically can walk in the rain with them!

So for those who are getting the D40 ... here are the 'suggested' buys after your 18-55mm kit lens.Remember that you can only use AF-S / AF-I lenses in order to have AF.

1. AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (NEW) featuring Dual Mode VR
2. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED
3. AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
4. AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED

There you go! brows.gif

If that's the case, then Nikon did a few mistakes in this round :
1. They 'kill' other lens : only AFS and AFI lenses can be used to have AF.
2. They should put back 5-point AF instead of 3-point - it was silly to reduce it.
3. Small body is also a 'duh' - I bet it would be cheaper to produce a D40 out of a D50 chasis.

In the Canon world, female SLR photographers either uses entry levels or professional bodies to shoot, I hardly see one in-between. It's not the matter of they can afford or not, they're also CAPABLE of using what the other gender can use. Hardware distinguishes no sex tongue.gif

If you shoot daytime more than 98% of the time VR is useless and extra money paid for, if you mount your camera onto a tripod it's useless, if you handheld at extreme low shutter speed i.e at below 1/20 ALSO no use! laugh.gif

but then again, if the price is indeed low as speculated,

then the 3 AF points is better then the prosumers

400D not D400

50mm is a good lens

combination of 70-300mm and 50mm
u lost the wide angle coverage

i think if u get the kit set
18-55 will cover it

If you really want to migrate to DSLR from your PnS or prosumer, the choices you have is D50, D70s and up.
D40 is like prosumer camera that can change lens, in between prosumer and DSLR.
Personally, i would not call D40 as DSLR... it does not have the function or ability of a DSLR.
D40 only 3-focus points, D50 5 area focus point
D40 use CAM-530, D50 use CAM-900
D40 no braketing, D50 have
D40 not fuly support AF lenses.
D40 to light, when mount heavy lenses might have problem.
D40 not support CLS i think.

but if you just want something better than PnS, D40 is a good choice.

Alamak..... HK you can get cheaper, but need to know where to shop.
I know someone fly all the way to HK just to get few lenses, the price is still cheaper than buying in here even after add air ticket price. But those lenses are huge and expensive one lar.

my humble opinion is, D40 is very nice placed currently.

So for those who are getting the D40 ... here are the 'suggested' buys after your 18-55mm kit lens.Remember that you can only use AF-S / AF-I lenses in order to have AF.
1. AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (NEW) featuring Dual Mode VR
2. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED
3. AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
4. AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED
There you go! brows.gif

The D70(s) kit lens (Nikkor 18-70mm) will work on the D40 (the lens has a SWM motor).

D40:
- no AF screw drive
- 3 point AF module
- no top LCD display
- big main LCD (2.5" high res, wide angle)
- Fancy in-camera image processing options (D-Lighting... etc.)
- ISO 3200 option
- USB 2.0
- Hidden RGB histogram

D70(s):
- AF screw drive present
- 5 point AF module
- top LCD display present
- smallish main LCD (1.8" or 2")
- Basic in-camera image options
- ISO 1600 max
- USB 1.1
- Single Green Channel histogram sweat.gif

oh not bad... just the AF point is the main drawback for me... hmmm... others are ok... so is there a chance that nikon might be selling the body only?

Yeah, with regards to the AF points, typically one would use the center point most of the time.

No idea about the D40 being sold without the kit lens. Looking for an alternate lens? drool.gif

If you choose Nikkor, you have a larger selection:

18-55 (D40, D50 kit)
18-70 (D70(s) kit)
18-135 (D80 kit)
18-200 VR - released with the D200, but not in a kit
12-24
17-55
55-200

70-300 VR
24-85
17-35
28-70
24-120 VR
70-200 VR
200-400 VR
105 VR
200 VR
300 VR
400
500
600

With the D40, you can forget about AF with ALL Tokina and Tamron lenses at this time.

However with Sigma, you can AF with these HSM lenses:
12-24, 17-35, 10-20, 50-150, 30

Just pray hard that Nikon, Tamron, Tokina and Sigma releases motorized versions of all their lenses soon.

I'm thinking of the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 myself. blush.gif

1st, make sure your juniors are serious, cuz there's one gal in my class who bought a 350d particularly just for the photography subject and now she dont even use it at all

check some of the prices here
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/260397
note: prices may vary from time to time, though the E-500 is 2500+ in there, outside you'll find its 3099 for the twin lens kit. D70s, go to fotokem in midvalley or 1u. Last time i heard they offered me 3100, body and lens. dont know about the d50 though, i'd go for the d70s, the d40 is not bad, cheap. But alot of flaws biggrin.gif

For those who are used to other SLR's, the lack of a top LCD will be a major issue, it really makes adjusting settings much faster.

However, for those who are moving up to SLR's from compacts and bridge cams, they won't miss the top LCD as they would be more accustomed to using the main LCD for settings.

To each, his own.

Any reports on how the D40 performs as compared to the other SLRs in terms of power consumption? Since its using a lower capacity power source and a huge LCD for everything, there has to be some trade-off in duration.

here's what i like to know

what do you mean by flaws? or are you just saying that the D40 is just lacking those better features found on D50 / D70? smile.gif

Verdict : Highly Recommended
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/

With their new D40, Nikon has proven that you can make an entry-level digital SLR without cutting a lot of corners. There's a lot to like about this camera, from its compact size to its performance to its photo quality. For those ready to step up to the D-SLR world, the D40 is a fabulous way to do it.

darn. so i need AF-S / AF-I lenses for AFing?

then again - the reason i'm aiming for DSLR is so that i get more freedom to manual focus! tongue.gif my S7000 focusing is tedious, yes it has lens-ring focus but then it's motorized.

darn. so i need AF-S / AF-I lenses for AFing?

then again - the reason i'm aiming for DSLR is so that i get more freedom to manual focus! tongue.gif my S7000 focusing is tedious, yes it has lens-ring focus but then it's motorized.

Yes, thats right, AF-S and/or AF-I only.

Since you are familiar with the concept and practicality's of MF operation, I doubt you'll find it an issue. If you need a similar lens to AF with the D40, Sigma's 30mm f/1.4 EX HSM is an excellent replacement, a popular choice for a "normal" prime on the D40.

aiyah i got the lense before the camera ma. earlier intended D50 / D70 wan.

i'm still contemplating whether to go without the AF function. biggrin.gif sometimes lazy la, snapping scenery.

btw how much can i sell the D40 kit lens for if i actually did buy one? come to think of it, the D40 kit lens can AF right? biggrin.gif

EDITED : AFAIK it is AF-S DX 18-55mm so looks like AF it can. biggrin.gif

From a marketing perspective, I suppose it would be a dead product if the kit lens couldn't AF right? rclxms.gif

If you are interested in using primes, going the D40 path for now isn't a very sunny choice. Nikon seems to be extra slow in updating their wide angle and normal primes with motors. In fact, only some primes above 105mm have motors. Darned.

I also confuse in choosing whether D50 or D40 for my new DSLR. But after reading the below links

comparison D50/D40/Pentax K100D

D40 recommendation

D40 review by KenRockwell

and tested by my own hand at the nearby photo shop...now I know which one best for me. biggrin.gif bytheway I can live with AF-S lenses alone..

hehe. i know my usage........ wink.gif

even my S7000 last me nearly 2 years, since photography is just a hobby i don't intend to buy many lense.

my type of photography is usually landscape / scenery so sticking to a lens or 2 will be fine until later on when i have more $$$$ allocated to spend on lenses. smile.gif

Well, if you had joined the Olympus camp, and if you're from the old-school, you'd have to spend some time getting used to their fly-by-wire (ie. motorised) focus ring... that's the major complaint I keep reading about from Olympus OM (35mm film, fully manual) users who finally switched to Olympus E-series DSLRs. For me, I don't feel that much of the difference between my Zuiko lenses and those kit lenses that come along with the 400D's and D80's demo units. Maybe they are fly-by-wire too, I guess.

Hi everyone,

Bought my first DLSR from KL. I was deciding between the Canon 400 and this but decided that for college use the Nikon would suffice. Anyway I got it for RM 2090 just for the kit alone, no idea if this is a good price but I didn't need the other accessories anyways. smile.gif

The price doesn't come with any bag so you have to get it separately. I bought it from KL Plaza, the shop name is Billion photo.

not necessarily. you can't generalize people. we all use cameras (and our funds) differently.

smile.gif for some (people like me) we do plan ahead on what to buy and how we wish to go around a hobby.

so D40 is a nice choice IMO if you're just wanting an entry-level DSLR and being happy with a few lenses. biggrin.gif

If you wanna go for DSLR, think of my advice...

For me, better go for high end DSLR
for example, Nikon; go for D70 or D80 or higher
for Canon; go for EOS 350D or 400D or higher

Why?
Because, no experience got nothing to do with high end camera
when u buy high end camera, you can learn a lot better than lower specs DSLR
this knowledge or so-called experience you WILL NEVER find it in lower specs DSLR

for example, just imagine what 10MP DSLR can do to you
you can go rclxm9.gif when see the results
just imagine, what 6MP DSLR can do for you?
for 6MP, might as well buy normal digital camera like Canon iXus
even iXus better than 6MP DSLR

one more thing, if you buy high end DSLR, you will learn more how to take extra care of your camera more than if u buy lower specs DSLR
know why? the cheaper the price, the less you care wink.gif

lol what the .......

My personal oppinions as i always play with my colleague 's d40
---------------------
1# too small : very hard to hold it steady
2# attach sb600/sb800 when shot vertical is unbalance
3# when attached larger lens : you hold the lens more than the body
4# 3 focus point is nothing much to play with (not flexible)
5# change settings process are slow
6# AF-S only lens for Auto Focus

if got better budget get a D70s,D80 or D200

yes it still better than a prosumer

esp attached it with ED VR lens brows.gif

yea, i agree with ajay.. with 10mp, the pics will be even bigger in size.. then you'll have to get more memory cards.. actually, if you a beginer get a d80.. he/she will take even more time to learn to use to camera, coz it will be a much more complicated camera compared to d40.

madstone : never compare a slr camera to a p'n's camera, its a whole different thing.. think wisely before making a comment on a camera, coz.. your advices may lead people to the wrong road.

not everyone has the $$$$ to spare.

D70 / D80 isn't even high-end in the first place. it's just a notch or 2 above D40 / 50 but certainly far from being high end.

how about you buy Canon EOS 1D Mk II then?

it's not about experience, it's about $$$$. even the D40 also have a lot of things to play around with already compared to P&S. smile.gif

i guess you have no idea that 6MP and 10MP picture sizes aren't that far apart,

and strangely earlier you mentioned getting a D70 / 350D when they're only 6MP / 8MP respectively. smile.gif

that's not the way it's supposed to be. regardless of what you buy, whether P&S below RM 600 or a high-end camera - you MUST always make it a practise to care for it. no matter how, it's still your $$$ spent.

anyone who thinks the way that you mentioned, i just a person who doesn't know how to care for stuff.

and your logic doesn't make sense.

see, there's he's just giving his feedback on what he finds he didn't like about it - that doesn't mean he cannot recommend to others. smile.gif

do some readup on the D40 reviews, it's a good camera.

if you have bigger palms, maybe you'd prefer the D70/D80. biggrin.gif for me, i have smaller palms and i like the size of the D40.

chill man...i think wat goldfries meant is jz nt to shut down ppl's choices...personally i feel tat whether a camera is good or bad dpends on wat the user wants n prefer n wat options does the buyer has...some might hav the $$ bt will stil prefer a lower spec camera bcos he/she might nt nid such pro functions bt they jz want a decent camera wt better quality pics compared to compacts or ps...likewise some buyers might want a very pro camera bt could nt afford it financially n so on n so forth...omg i'm getting long winded here, my bad...bt my point is lets keep the options open cos like u mention diff ppl might differ in opinions n preferences...lets jz b happy n merry in sharing ^^ cool?

btw i jz gt the D40 cos i'm nt aiming pro...jz lookin for a new gadget to play wt ^^ n i dun want all the bulks , so the D40 suits me jz fine (i hav small palms keke)^^..n the price well it's alrite wt me since i wouldn wnna spend more than 2.5k for a camera...n i'm pretty happy wt the quality...dun mind wt all the pro pro stuff cos i aint pro...jz to play play (^0^)

so far what i've read seems to show that D40 is the right camera for ppl like me,...noobs into DSLR...in fact the star had a review yesterday which i thought was indeed helpful. I think the main thing that i have to consider is the price.....that's why D40 seems like a logical choice to me.

Go for it man! i have both the d80 and d40. d40 is plenty of camera, and as a carry around you wont miss much or any of the d80's extra features! its an excellent camera...even if its cheap and dosent support many lens or is only 6megapixles or hell..only 3 focus points? well i shoot purely choosing focus points manually and having 11 is irritating and cumbersome! 3 is much simpler and faster...the comparison is endless!

Cheers

Guys,
I gotta a question.... Have anyone here downloaded the D40 latest firmware update ?? Coz it the website states

"If you have entered the correct serial number in the "My Profile" area and are still getting an error your camera may not be a North American model camera. This download is only available to North American users. If you purchased your camera in North America, and the serial number reports an error you may have a "Grey Market" product."

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi..I think it says that bcos americans only want americans to download from american website..lol..Im pretty sure the d40 is same throughout the world..only serial number diff due to nikon's country to country support and warranty..bcos they dont support grey market products. So they just waana check that your serial number relates to that country.

Dont download from there..get it from japan or europe sites, i downloaded from europe. If u cant find it..pm me your email and i will email you the file. I updated my d40 3 days ago and all is well.

ehh. is the lacking of LCD status display on top part of your CONs point #2? smile.gif

the size on the other hand is a PRO to some. it boils down to preference.

what i don't like is that D40 doesn't use CF card. damn, bought a CF to use with DSLR and now i have to get SD card. luckily the thing is package usually includes 1 - 2GB SD. smile.gif

yeah - i admit, i'm eyeing on a D40 myself.

In tat case D200 is a better camera than D80. Then again...the D2Xs is much much better than D200. Might as well save til kingdom come to buy cos there'll always be better and better cams around.

Since we're talking better and better...Hasselblad just announced their new camera. Better buy that one cos it's what real professional use. That is if you can save USD25,000 in your "camera budget account".

There'll be no end to which camera's better than another. Whatever fits the budget and needs. I've been eyeing a dslr and I would love to get the D80 myself. I can afford a D80 but would I need it? Not sure. But I know I definitely would appreciate the more adv functions of the D40 compared to a PnS. That's a start no?? Invest in lenses and flash gun 1st cos these acc will carry forward to your next body. That said, I'm looking at the D50,D70s as well. Want to make an educated and well informed purchase.

I'm sure I'll "grow" in my photography and in the future will buy another body to go along.

"Sikit sikit lama jadi bukit"

My 2 cents....

By the time you can save up to buy that hasselblad, you might as well buy the whole Nikon range of cam and lenses.... notworthy.gif

How do I get this service if I'm interested? Take it back to Nikon service centre. How much are the charges?

I'm new to DLSR (used manual SLR with slides before), so I'm learning to shoot with NEF. Some queries; Does it matter whether I open the NEF files with Photoshop CS2 or the SW supplied by Nikon?

Thanks

Guys
Could u please enlighten me on the following questions:

With the Nikon D40 or any Nikon DSLR for that matter how much does the SD memory card speed matter ? (Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6)

Then there is Apacer with their X60 and X150 speed SD cards.

The reason as who why I asked this question is because i have just bought a Apacer SDHC 4GB Class 2. Now I am wondering how much will this affect taking pictures ? Thanks in advance !!

I believe the D40 a stepping stone for entering the photography hobby. I dont see a point to argue what camera has what features for the mean time as I just want to test it out without spending too much money. If the poison for being a shutter bug is strong by all means the sky is the limit for which camera to go with which lens with what features... = )))) just my 2 cents worth

Well, your DSLR will help you built some muscle in your arms, boy!

Last time I thought my 0.5kg lens on my 0.8kg body was heavy.
Now I'm using a metal barrel 1kg zoom lens.. and then the 0.5kg lens feels lighter now.

Well, 'sharpness' is also relative to the output picture size. Heck, if you don't print beyond 4R or 5R size, any kit lens whose aperture is stepped down 1 or 2 stops and with good lighting can give seemingly tack-sharp images.

You'll still be limited to what the in-camera buffer memory can hold. If the manual says your D40 can't do more than 4 highest-quality JPEGs per second, then no memory card can improve that.

What a faster memory card can improve is the wait time before that in-camera buffer memory is cleared again and you're ready for the next burst of shots.

Agreed..

u can see how many pic that buffer can hold when u half press the button..
if buffer full then wait until all the pic in da bufffer transfer to ur memory card..
faster memory card, no need wait for longer time..kakaka...

littlegreen: Here my shot at answering your question.

"Is Auto focus quality better than manual focus?"

If u just want to point and shoot with D40 then this would give u the best the camera can do. For beginner such as I, say when an event occurs (wedding / motorsports)and u want to take a pic however dont know what u need to set.

However when u want to fully capture the moment or create something special (composition) then the best I feel would be manual.

This is my 2 cents worth as I am still reading and learning how to take good pictures.

@littlegreen

As the nikon D40 doesn't has a internal motor, and if you want to AF, the lens u're using need to have the focusing motor...

Since u're using a old tamron lens, most probably it doesn't has the internal focusing motor and therefore you can only manual focus it. You can't AF on old lens.

dats is disadvantage of d40 for using old lens. im currently using nikkor 50mm f2.8 for my d40, n i need to focus manually. thats pain at first, but u'll be use to it. New Nikon SWM lens is expensive, maybe i survey in kl later for tamron or sigma..

ermm.. u meant the autofocus and manual focus for the sec sentences...
o yaa.. one more thing i found that when u get adjust of the clear view after tuning the tele/kitlense u get some small range of clear view... should we turn it to the right maximum or left side maximum...

the range of clear view is indicated in viewfinder by having a small light lite up.. u know what i meant rite...

Anyone can recommend a good telezoom AFS lens for the D40? Maybe one in the 300mm range? I just bought my D40 a month back and I've been loving it!

Depends... I find that I often had to manual focus in dim lighting with my lenses because the AF wastes a lot of time hunting in and out trying to find the correct focal point. But your eyes have to be sharp because long telephoto + large aperture = shallow depth-of-field which makes focusing errors look really bad.

In bright lighting, most lenses' AF locks on in under a second, and it's much better to use continuous servo AF when taking action photos.

So in other words, if you're a beginner and your eyes are not sharp then manual focusing is rendered a useless function even for a telephoto zoom, let alone a supertele? tongue.gif

From what I gather, D40 owners ask 20 questions about how shallow is a certain aperture and how far is a certain focal length. Would they spend thousands to get lenses they know very well they can do nothing but manual focus? I dun think so lor sweat.gif tongue.gif

all lenses can, just the question of whether it has autofocus o not and as far as i know not many 3rd party lenses have dedicated motors

while doin my electronics engineering course halfway i figured that i hav quite an interest in photography. perhaps i shud learn more abt photography skills and apply both my engineering and photography knowledge in camera industry in da future biggrin.gif

Then you are really caught! 3-point AF is as old a feature as old as can be, I still remember using a 5-year old Canon EOS D60 with 3-point AF last year laugh.gif

Maybe it will become 5-point or 9-point at the coming replacement. Get ready to chuck your camera for a better one next round, dun let pricing and packaging fool you anymore.

If your eyes aren't sharp, you can't even spot out autofocus errors...
There are also some tricks like varying the manual focus ring slightly in-between a burst of shots.

Manual focus lenses are generally cheap... try looking through the 2nd-hand market; Ebay comes to mind first. I just got a fast (f/2.8-f/4) fully manual 70-210mm lens of yesteryear from Ebay for S$136 (I think I overpaid due to lack of patience) and I'm having a barrel of fun with it. It's a 3rd-party brand with an incompatible mount -I'm using a mount adapter ring with it.

If anyone has the money, I'd say leave the manual focus lenses to the more experienced, and just get your darned AF-S lens.
If you need focusing speed, no way you can beat the AF servo (given a good 5 or more multi point focusing zone system).

If your subject matter is slow-moving or static, having to use fully manual lenses may not be such an impediment and you save $$$ to get something else.

whats an underwear bag? bags are all about personal preference. u want a sling, backpack, shoulder, waist? budget is also relative. u want a tripod holder? u want to be able to carry all your lenses?

a nice start would be

http://www.cambags.com

comes with pics n user reviews. good luck!

Actually got... Sigma SD12, SD13, and soon-to-be-out SD14. Uses Foveon CCD. But I guess it isn't popular because the Fovean CCD didn't quite live up to all the hoo-hah.

Then you are really caught! 3-point AF is as old a feature as old as can be, I still remember using a 5-year old Canon EOS D60 with 3-point AF last year laugh.gif
Maybe it will become 5-point or 9-point at the coming replacement. Get ready to chuck your camera for a better one next round, dun let pricing and packaging fool you anymore.

im not rich like u, dats why i bought this d40, else ill go for d80... doh.gif doh.gif

i finally took the plunge into the world of DSLR and got myself a D40 recently.
Just have to say that i'm loving every minute with it... Bloody amazing pictures from a camera that's just slightly more expensive than a point and shoot that i've been using previously....

it is indeed harder to use the manual focus with the current dslr cameras. i find problem in using my 85mm f1.4 manual lens on my d200... hard to focus leh. but no problem when i use it on my FM2. maybe it's the size of the finder... and the difference focusing screen

Full frame (FF) means the size of the sensor is equal to the size of a 35mm negative. Normally DSLR have a crop factor of either 1.3, 1.5 or 1.6 depending on models. But high end models offers FF, for example the canon eos 5D. When on FF, you get what you see, ie your focal length will be exactly as it is.

@ifer

D40 good buy? Maybe i'll consider getting it? hehe tongue.gif Shooting film and digital together gonna be fun haha

Just to enquire, How much would a 50mm or telephoto lens cost for the D40? Nonit high-end one lar..just 'can-use' kind.

I know that the cam has to rely on the lenses motor to auto focus..those lens cost more exp rite?

As of today, there are no 50mm lenses which can AF with the D40.

No-AF with D40:
AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, around RM400.
AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D, around RM1k

---

There are a few telephoto zoom choices (all below RM1000, budget stuff)

Will AF with D40:
AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED

No-AF with D40:
AF Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6D ED
AF Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6G
Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO DG
Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD

---

Just in case you suddenly came up with more spare cash to get a mid range lens:

Consider the:
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX HSM DC - this has the same angle of view as film 50mm (RM 1.7k)
AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR - much better than the budget versions, and with VR (RM2k+)
- these two lenses will AF with the D40

Don't forget about the 1/3:2/3 ratio rule-of-thumb for positioning the depth-of-field optimally around your subject.

Basically, the DOF spans 1/3 of its total length in front of your focal point, and the other 2/3 of its total length behind your subject.

Yeah, I think the old film SLRs have bigger mirrors and bigger prisms and thus bigger viewfinders, compared to DSLRs of today which have smaller APS-C sized sensors and smaller mirrors and prisms to match it.

Old film SLRs also have those split-prism focusing screens that help in determining focus.

Yeah... shooting on both sys gonna cost me a bomb. That's why im still on film now. Film rocks haha...

@ming

Since the D40 doesn't has a internal motor to do the AF, the lens that you used on this body got to have that AF motor.

the lens nothing special when the max aperture is f4 shocking.gif but to budget users, VR might be tempting for them to get one

Interesting isn't it? The Nikon D40 has the shortest marketing lifespan in DSLR history. Barely 3 months. The D40x is probably due to Sony EOL-ing the venerable 6Mpix sensor. With the D40x, the entire Nikon dSLR line is now 10Mpx.

I believe many who just bought the D40 would be crying foul now. But don't fret, the D40's 6Mpix sensor ought to perform better at high ISOs. And with a 6Mpix sensor, you save on SD card costs.

I believe Nikon is going to make a killing again in the low end market with this D40x.

i got it at enata photo in subang parade.

the lens is branded as sony 52mm UV lens... but the packaging does not look like ori sony to me as i have sony P&S digicam.

tripos is those filmsy... brand also capalang.. just a silver sticker on the tripod leg.

the bag is some not famous 'outdoor' brand...

Don't despair. Unless you like to crop your pix a lot or have to print them at above A3 sizes, 6MP resolution is adequate. 6MP compared to 8MP is just roughly a 15% improvement in resolution (SQRT(8/6)).

Ok then. 29% increase in resolving power, assuming all other shooting conditions and hardware is optimum.

Just look at the price. D40x is definitely not a replacement for the D40. It's to fill the gap in their product line, and compete directly with the rebel xti.

I doubt it. Why would there be? Again, D40x is at a higher price point, USD799 msrp vs USD599 msrp for D40.

Not only is the 105VR the cheapest AF-S prime, its also the cheapest pro-level (gold ring) lens.

The Tamron SP90 has optics, as good as the 105VR or maybe even better, but the mechanical quality is light years away from the Nikkor.

Non-obvious disadvantages of the Nikkor:
- heavy, nearly 800g compared to the SP90
- the focus ring is wide, a bit too wide, accidental focus shifts possible

the question u should ask is not what lens can fit, but most importantly is what lens can auto-focus on D40. just stick with the kit lens & don't worry about lens for now, later on you can add the cheapest VR lens 55-200mm (USD250) when it's available

if wan zoom and AF, 55-200mm is the cheapest, RM700-800, but no VR.

U might consider the 50mm f1.8 prime lens too that every Nikon owner have but it can't AF with D40. But just now i try with it with D40, really not hard to focus manually since the range is not big and im a noob too

no SB400 is not useless. u can check out kenrockwell's site to have good idea of what it can do - esp bouce flash. it's small but still powerful for bounce. of course the SB600/800 is it's big brother...sure better one. i think D40 + SB400 suit each other really well due to it's compact size. plan on getting one myself

agreed. but not all people like the bulky size (me included) & i suppose that follows with the D40 theme...small but useful smile.gif
