if this news/rumour is real, i find it dissapointing... sigh
a D40, 6MP, can't use other lenses except AF-S only. supposedly 599 EURO. anyway, no news about the D60 huh? it's supposed to be announced either this week or next week. |

I actually came across this or D60, can't remember which while I was searching for my dslr. The design wasn't what I was looking for.
Too few buttons for me to press on the body. I like to press buttons. |

This is supposed to be the model to bridge the gap between prosumer and DLSR, 599 Euro is abit too much i'll say. They've already took away the top LCD display, AF motor and recycled the D50/70 viewfinder (and possibly sensor from D50). Surely it could be cheaper.
Lets see what will happen in a few weeks time.. perhaps it's an indication of abundance of AF-S lenses coming soon? 50mm f/1.4 AF-S anyone? |

Yeah.. garbage to us who are already on top of the food chain, but what about auntie/uncle/grand ma/grand dad who can't be bothered with learning but want good quality pics? IMHO they are just targeting at a different consumer group.. a body and the two basic kit lense (18-55, 50-200) and maybe an external flash is all they ever need.

Some one told me that they can't even match the white dot to the red dot when they wanna change lenses, gosh you wanna convince them just by merely telling them that the quality of DSLRs are much better than compacts? I rather sell them a 10MP compact digicam thank you very much I think that model suites students better, you know, the "Which SLR is better? Which brand is better? I got a budget of so-and-so Ringgit but I am doing so-and-so course majoring in Photography bla bla bla" group This post has been edited by ac98: Nov 6 2006, 02:55 PM |

an external flash unit will add considerable weight to the camera and built in flash isn't exactly perfect.

my humble opinion is, D40 is very nice placed currently.
- why AF-S? Diam diam focus, faster than screw, got so many zoom lenses from cheap to pro. and since most people like to curi-snap, AF-S work like a wonder - why 6Mp? a lot of consumer actually dont need more than 4mp, most of the time, they print 4R, and most of the time, the 6mp is too huge for the puny flash card they own - 2.5" LCD? Consumer like mah, big big clear and sharp - no-direct buttons? why bother these when u just wan great photo without hassle, AUTO work best for these people - built in flash with ittl? ok, this pwned sipeh many flash system... maybe i am fanboy hahaha |

D40? Well, if it's cheaper than the D50 then it would be of interest to me. And as for D60... Are Nikon really going to name it that way? I remember one of Canon's earliest DSLR models is the EOS D60 so who knows... with all those copyright infringement lawsuits...

It might be priced below 2k, honestly speaking, Nikon still does not have a HSM 50mm f1.8 yet ryte?
The D50 is still a steal at the current retail price despite being quite outdated now. Its a good camera that is aimed at beginners but the non-compatiblity with older lenses are worth the concern. |

QUOTE(aichiban @ Nov 9 2006, 10:06 AM) Reminds me of the 2nd hand car market ... Not anyone can afford to keep their cars at home while they go out and search for their next set of wheels. The used car ppl now had resorted to so many things to woo buyers i.e "Drive 1st Pay Later" Scheme" (thanks to Proton's 6 Months no Pay Promotion), Zero Deposit Promotion and the best one ... Free Astro. Can you imagine? Free Astro from buying a used car? A spoiled used camera market will benefit buyers in the long run but will kill sellers, which happens to be ppl like you and me also, wanting to dump our hardware for upgrades or even extra cash |

Generally I would give myself some space to inhale and exhale, especially when it's a used item. With a certain budget, I was thinking about a Canon EOS 1D, EOS 30D or a new 400D package, still pondering ...
Even used Nikon D1X and D1H units are very low priced now, ranging about RM3000 to about RM5000, lower than the EOS 1D which is about RM5000+. Imagine, those are professional, tough and weather-sealed bodies, you basically can walk in the rain with them! |

yes true.
but the only things in D1X killed me. the battery life... otherwise, its tough like a metal. in the other hand, if u can find a D2H now, will be very nice, CLS Boleh, Battery Boleh, Screen Boleh, Speed Boleh! Blow 16R Boleh with the super high detailed 4mega pix file. P/S: ac98 , wud r u using now btw, i tot u are on EOS 5D? |

Got new lens:
AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II ![]() Major Features QUOTE * Offers the popular focal range of 18-55mm (picture angle equivalent to a 27-82.5mm lens in the 35mm format) for use in a variety of situations * Compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for quiet and smooth autofocusing * An ED glass element minimizes chromatic aberration, and a hybrid aspherical lens element minimizes astigmatism and other forms of distortion while ensuring high resolution and contrast * Compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry * Optical performance highly complements Nikon digital SLR cameras * Ideally complements the D40 kit * The seven-blade rounded diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural |

Just read the news today ... good-lor, finally Nikon came out with their own version of 'Little SLR' like Canon's 350D and 400D
Better keep my 300D ... the last entry level 'Big SLR' from Canon |

So for those who are getting the D40 ... here are the 'suggested' buys after your 18-55mm kit lens.Remember that you can only use AF-S / AF-I lenses in order to have AF.
1. AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED (NEW) featuring Dual Mode VR 2. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED 3. AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED 4. AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED There you go! |

QUOTE(clemong_888 @ Nov 16 2006, 04:11 PM) i dunno but i'm not overly impressed.. the auto focus cutbacks are abit extreme even if it's 300usd cheaper.. If that's the case, then Nikon did a few mistakes in this round : 1. They 'kill' other lens : only AFS and AFI lenses can be used to have AF. 2. They should put back 5-point AF instead of 3-point - it was silly to reduce it. 3. Small body is also a 'duh' - I bet it would be cheaper to produce a D40 out of a D50 chasis. |

If you shoot daytime more than 98% of the time VR is useless and extra money paid for, if you mount your camera onto a tripod it's useless, if you handheld at extreme low shutter speed i.e at below 1/20 ALSO no use!

3 AF point is indeed very discouraging
but then again, if the price is indeed low as speculated, then the 3 AF points is better then the prosumers die prosumers die... |

QUOTE(Xcaliber @ Nov 29 2006, 12:09 AM) If you really want to migrate to DSLR from your PnS or prosumer, the choices you have is D50, D70s and up.D40 is like prosumer camera that can change lens, in between prosumer and DSLR. Personally, i would not call D40 as DSLR... it does not have the function or ability of a DSLR. D40 only 3-focus points, D50 5 area focus point D40 use CAM-530, D50 use CAM-900 D40 no braketing, D50 have D40 not fuly support AF lenses. D40 to light, when mount heavy lenses might have problem. D40 not support CLS i think. but if you just want something better than PnS, D40 is a good choice. |

However with Sigma, you can AF with these HSM lenses: 12-24, 17-35, 10-20, 50-150, 30 Just pray hard that Nikon, Tamron, Tokina and Sigma releases motorized versions of all their lenses soon. For those who are used to other SLR's, the lack of a top LCD will be a major issue, it really makes adjusting settings much faster. However, for those who are moving up to SLR's from compacts and bridge cams, they won't miss the top LCD as they would be more accustomed to using the main LCD for settings. To each, his own. |

D70s, go to fotokem in midvalley or 1u. Last time i heard they offered me 3100, body and lens. dont know about the d50 though, i'd go for the d70s, the d40 is not bad, cheap. But alot of flaws |

QUOTE(R a D ! c 4 L @ Jan 5 2007, 02:38 AM) here's what i like to know what do you mean by flaws? or are you just saying that the D40 is just lacking those better features found on D50 / D70? Verdict : Highly Recommended http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/ With their new D40, Nikon has proven that you can make an entry-level digital SLR without cutting a lot of corners. There's a lot to like about this camera, from its compact size to its performance to its photo quality. For those ready to step up to the D-SLR world, the D40 is a fabulous way to do it. http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/nikon/d40-review/ QUOTE(wkcheang @ Jan 5 2007, 11:45 PM) rich nmind, rich and unwise - that's the problem. i guess the size and the megapixels that come along makes one look like a better photographer. QUOTE(goldfries @ Jan 6 2007, 10:24 AM) darn. so i need AF-S / AF-I lenses for AFing? Yes, thats right, AF-S and/or AF-I only.then again - the reason i'm aiming for DSLR is so that i get more freedom to manual focus! Since you are familiar with the concept and practicality's of MF operation, I doubt you'll find it an issue. If you need a similar lens to AF with the D40, Sigma's 30mm f/1.4 EX HSM is an excellent replacement, a popular choice for a "normal" prime on the D40. |

QUOTE(goldfries @ Jan 6 2007, 10:41 AM) hehe. makes sense. pardon my early-morning-lack-of-common-sense. If you are interested in using primes, going the D40 path for now isn't a very sunny choice. Nikon seems to be extra slow in updating their wide angle and normal primes with motors. In fact, only some primes above 105mm have motors. Darned.still considering the D40...........tempting......... |

comparison D50/D40/Pentax K100D D40 recommendation D40 review by KenRockwell and tested by my own hand at the nearby photo shop...now I know which one best for me. This post has been edited by musangpulut: Jan 6 2007, 06:45 PM |

Well, if you had joined the Olympus camp, and if you're from the old-school, you'd have to spend some time getting used to their fly-by-wire (ie. motorised) focus ring... that's the major complaint I keep reading about from Olympus OM (35mm film, fully manual) users who finally switched to Olympus E-series DSLRs. For me, I don't feel that much of the difference between my Zuiko lenses and those kit lenses that come along with the 400D's and D80's demo units. Maybe they are fly-by-wire too, I guess. |

Hi everyone,
Bought my first DLSR from KL. I was deciding between the Canon 400 and this but decided that for college use the Nikon would suffice. Anyway I got it for RM 2090 just for the kit alone, no idea if this is a good price but I didn't need the other accessories anyways. |

shouldnt it be better to go straight either d70 or d80? rather than getting d40?
wont it be like buy first cause it cheap then regret it later? no experience can learn mah.. |

QUOTE(VincC454 @ Jan 31 2007, 02:03 PM) shouldnt it be better to go straight either d70 or d80? rather than getting d40? not necessarily. you can't generalize people. we all use cameras (and our funds) differently.wont it be like buy first cause it cheap then regret it later? so D40 is a nice choice IMO if you're just wanting an entry-level DSLR and being happy with a few lenses. |

If you wanna go for DSLR, think of my advice...
For me, better go for high end DSLR for example, Nikon; go for D70 or D80 or higher for Canon; go for EOS 350D or 400D or higher Why? Because, no experience got nothing to do with high end camera when u buy high end camera, you can learn a lot better than lower specs DSLR this knowledge or so-called experience you WILL NEVER find it in lower specs DSLR for example, just imagine what 10MP DSLR can do to you you can go just imagine, what 6MP DSLR can do for you? for 6MP, might as well buy normal digital camera like Canon iXus even iXus better than 6MP DSLR one more thing, if you buy high end DSLR, you will learn more how to take extra care of your camera more than if u buy lower specs DSLR know why? the cheaper the price, the less you care |

D70 / D80 isn't even high-end in the first place. it's just a notch or 2 above D40 / 50 but certainly far from being high end. how about you buy Canon EOS 1D Mk II then? QUOTE(madstone @ Jan 31 2007, 04:18 PM) Why? Because, no experience got nothing to do with high end camera when u buy high end camera, you can learn a lot better than lower specs DSLR this knowledge or so-called experience you WILL NEVER find it in lower specs DSLR it's not about experience, it's about $$$$. even the D40 also have a lot of things to play around with already compared to P&S. QUOTE(madstone @ Jan 31 2007, 04:18 PM) one more thing, if you buy high end DSLR, you will learn more how to take extra care of your camera more than if u buy lower specs DSLR that's not the way it's supposed to be. regardless of what you buy, whether P&S below RM 600 or a high-end camera - you MUST always make it a practise to care for it. no matter how, it's still your $$$ spent. know why? the cheaper the price, the less you care anyone who thinks the way that you mentioned, i just a person who doesn't know how to care for stuff. and your logic doesn't make sense. |

so far what i've read seems to show that D40 is the right camera for ppl like me,...noobs into DSLR...in fact the star had a review yesterday which i thought was indeed helpful. I think the main thing that i have to consider is the price.....that's why D40 seems like a logical choice to me.

Guys,
I gotta a question.... Have anyone here downloaded the D40 latest firmware update ?? Coz it the website states "If you have entered the correct serial number in the "My Profile" area and are still getting an error your camera may not be a North American model camera. This download is only available to North American users. If you purchased your camera in North America, and the serial number reports an error you may have a "Grey Market" product." Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. |

So they just waana check that your serial number relates to that country.I gotta a question.... Have anyone here downloaded the D40 latest firmware update ?? QUOTE(mememe12 @ Feb 3 2007, 01:33 PM) hahaha.. seriously.. D80 is much much much more better.. if u have the budget.. if i dont hv the budget also.. i would rather save a lil more money.. n get a D80... In tat case D200 is a better camera than D80. Then again...the D2Xs is much much better than D200. Might as well save til kingdom come to buy cos there'll always be better and better cams around.its bcoz when u are pro. i think u will love D80 instead of D40 Since we're talking better and better...Hasselblad just announced their new camera. Better buy that one cos it's what real professional use. That is if you can save USD25,000 in your "camera budget account". There'll be no end to which camera's better than another. Whatever fits the budget and needs. I've been eyeing a dslr and I would love to get the D80 myself. I can afford a D80 but would I need it? Not sure. But I know I definitely would appreciate the more adv functions of the D40 compared to a PnS. That's a start no?? Invest in lenses and flash gun 1st cos these acc will carry forward to your next body. That said, I'm looking at the D50,D70s as well. Want to make an educated and well informed purchase. I'm sure I'll "grow" in my photography and in the future will buy another body to go along. "Sikit sikit lama jadi bukit" My 2 cents.... how is canon 350D compared to Nikon D40?
besides the price, D40 is highly affordable, pricing at rm2100 now |

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Feb 5 2007, 07:37 AM) How do I get this service if I'm interested? Take it back to Nikon service centre. How much are the charges?I'm new to DLSR (used manual SLR with slides before), so I'm learning to shoot with NEF. Some queries; Does it matter whether I open the NEF files with Photoshop CS2 or the SW supplied by Nikon? Thanks |

Guys
Could u please enlighten me on the following questions: With the Nikon D40 or any Nikon DSLR for that matter how much does the SD memory card speed matter ? (Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6) Then there is Apacer with their X60 and X150 speed SD cards. The reason as who why I asked this question is because i have just bought a Apacer SDHC 4GB Class 2. Now I am wondering how much will this affect taking pictures ? Thanks in advance !! |

littlegreen: Here my shot at answering your question.
"Is Auto focus quality better than manual focus?" If u just want to point and shoot with D40 then this would give u the best the camera can do. For beginner such as I, say when an event occurs (wedding / motorsports)and u want to take a pic however dont know what u need to set. However when u want to fully capture the moment or create something special (composition) then the best I feel would be manual. This is my 2 cents worth as I am still reading and learning how to take good pictures. |

@littlegreen
As the nikon D40 doesn't has a internal motor, and if you want to AF, the lens u're using need to have the focusing motor... Since u're using a old tamron lens, most probably it doesn't has the internal focusing motor and therefore you can only manual focus it. You can't AF on old lens. |

Anyone can recommend a good telezoom AFS lens for the D40? Maybe one in the 300mm range? I just bought my D40 a month back and I've been loving it!

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Feb 15 2007, 08:00 AM) Depends... I find that I often had to manual focus in dim lighting with my lenses because the AF wastes a lot of time hunting in and out trying to find the correct focal point. So in other words, if you're a beginner and your eyes are not sharp then manual focusing is rendered a useless function even for a telephoto zoom, let alone a supertele? In bright lighting, most lenses' AF locks on in under a second, and it's much better to use continuous servo AF when taking action photos. From what I gather, D40 owners ask 20 questions about how shallow is a certain aperture and how far is a certain focal length. Would they spend thousands to get lenses they know very well they can do nothing but manual focus? I dun think so lor |

wow im quite surprised that the price of this dslr can be juz a few hundreds more expensive than the high-priced digicam. sort of thinking of getting this for my photography hobby.
while doin my electronics engineering course halfway i figured that i hav quite an interest in photography. perhaps i shud learn more abt photography skills and apply both my engineering and photography knowledge in camera industry in da future |

QUOTE(shiinkuro31 @ Feb 16 2007, 04:03 PM) Then you are really caught! 3-point AF is as old a feature as old as can be, I still remember using a 5-year old Canon EOS D60 with 3-point AF last year Maybe it will become 5-point or 9-point at the coming replacement. Get ready to chuck your camera for a better one next round, dun let pricing and packaging fool you anymore. |

Would they spend thousands to get lenses they know very well they can do nothing but manual focus? I dun think so lor There are also some tricks like varying the manual focus ring slightly in-between a burst of shots. Manual focus lenses are generally cheap... try looking through the 2nd-hand market; Ebay comes to mind first. I just got a fast (f/2.8-f/4) fully manual 70-210mm lens of yesteryear from Ebay for S$136 (I think I overpaid due to lack of patience) and I'm having a barrel of fun with it. It's a 3rd-party brand with an incompatible mount -I'm using a mount adapter ring with it. If anyone has the money, I'd say leave the manual focus lenses to the more experienced, and just get your darned AF-S lens. If you need focusing speed, no way you can beat the AF servo (given a good 5 or more multi point focusing zone system). If your subject matter is slow-moving or static, having to use fully manual lenses may not be such an impediment and you save $$$ to get something else. QUOTE(littlegreen @ Feb 16 2007, 07:06 PM) erm... i got old one fr my dad tamron 70-300mm can fit into d40 but no auto focus...bear in mind it is darn heavy for the 300mm tele.... i mean tamron or sigma for new nikon lens EDII like d40,i noe dat old one can be use without AF-S. just asking the price for any 3rd party lens dat can be fit into d40 with AF-S.. u meant they like auto focus? QUOTE(ac98 @ Feb 16 2007, 09:06 PM) Then you are really caught! 3-point AF is as old a feature as old as can be, I still remember using a 5-year old Canon EOS D60 with 3-point AF last year im not rich like u, dats why i bought this d40, else ill go for d80... Maybe it will become 5-point or 9-point at the coming replacement. Get ready to chuck your camera for a better one next round, dun let pricing and packaging fool you anymore. |

i finally took the plunge into the world of DSLR and got myself a D40 recently.
Just have to say that i'm loving every minute with it... Bloody amazing pictures from a camera that's just slightly more expensive than a point and shoot that i've been using previously.... |

@littlegreen
Full frame (FF) means the size of the sensor is equal to the size of a 35mm negative. Normally DSLR have a crop factor of either 1.3, 1.5 or 1.6 depending on models. But high end models offers FF, for example the canon eos 5D. When on FF, you get what you see, ie your focal length will be exactly as it is. @ifer D40 good buy? Maybe i'll consider getting it? hehe |

Just to enquire, How much would a 50mm or telephoto lens cost for the D40? Nonit high-end one lar..just 'can-use' kind.
I know that the cam has to rely on the lenses motor to auto focus..those lens cost more exp rite? |

Don't forget about the 1/3:2/3 ratio rule-of-thumb for positioning the depth-of-field optimally around your subject.Basically, the DOF spans 1/3 of its total length in front of your focal point, and the other 2/3 of its total length behind your subject. Yeah... shooting on both sys gonna cost me a bomb. That's why im still on film now. Film rocks haha... @ming Since the D40 doesn't has a internal motor to do the AF, the lens that you used on this body got to have that AF motor. |

Interesting isn't it? The Nikon D40 has the shortest marketing lifespan in DSLR history. Barely 3 months. The D40x is probably due to Sony EOL-ing the venerable 6Mpix sensor. With the D40x, the entire Nikon dSLR line is now 10Mpx.
I believe many who just bought the D40 would be crying foul now. But don't fret, the D40's 6Mpix sensor ought to perform better at high ISOs. And with a 6Mpix sensor, you save on SD card costs. I believe Nikon is going to make a killing again in the low end market with this D40x. Delighting You Always? This post has been edited by wkcheang: Mar 6 2007, 02:06 PM |

Don't despair. Unless you like to crop your pix a lot or have to print them at above A3 sizes, 6MP resolution is adequate. 6MP compared to 8MP is just roughly a 15% improvement in resolution (SQRT(8/6)).

Just look at the price. D40x is definitely not a replacement for the D40. It's to fill the gap in their product line, and compete directly with the rebel xti.

Thinking of getting the D40 myself, but I'd have liked to have the option of getting it with the 18-135mm lens and not the 18-55mm kit lens

the cheapest AF-S prime is indeed the 105VR...
and one can't compare the 105VR with the crappy tamron 90. ok, it's not crappy but it's ... sigh |

QUOTE(ifer @ Mar 8 2007, 10:23 AM) the cheapest AF-S prime is indeed the 105VR... Not only is the 105VR the cheapest AF-S prime, its also the cheapest pro-level (gold ring) lens.and one can't compare the 105VR with the crappy tamron 90. ok, it's not crappy but it's ... sigh The Tamron SP90 has optics, as good as the 105VR or maybe even better, but the mechanical quality is light years away from the Nikkor. Non-obvious disadvantages of the Nikkor: - heavy, nearly 800g compared to the SP90 - the focus ring is wide, a bit too wide, accidental focus shifts possible |

the question u should ask is not what lens can fit, but most importantly is what lens can auto-focus on D40. just stick with the kit lens & don't worry about lens for now, later on you can add the cheapest VR lens 55-200mm (USD250) when it's available

no SB400 is not useless. u can check out kenrockwell's site to have good idea of what it can do - esp bouce flash. it's small but still powerful for bounce. of course the SB600/800 is it's big brother...sure better one. i think D40 + SB400 suit each other really well due to it's compact size. plan on getting one myself
