Project engineer in o&g possible to earn big bucks e.g rm15k with 5 years working experience?

Between operation engineer and project engineer, which one has better prospect and better salary?
*
That kind of money is entirely possible depending on the scale and complexity of the project.

Project engineer = Good salary but once you hit post handover and you don't get an offer to move to operations or a new project. You join the unemployment line. Also your roster is infinitely more shitty and stress levels are higher.

Operations = Stable job, decent pay + benefits and better rotation. But your pay packet will suffer lah and you won't be exposed to the more challenging aspects of implementation.

Thanks for the reply bro. Coz currently I'm working as operation engineer for one of local contractor and earn quite good money for a fresh engineer. But i jz sent my resign letter to join operator as graduate project engineer. Hoping this is a wise move for me. I always dreamed to earn 5 figures income (base salary) before 30 years old, and i work very hard for it.

Well it would depend on any future projects by the operator and whether there is a steady stream coming in. Also depends on the kind of contract you're being handed.

But above all it depends on their policy when it comes to hiring and retention. I work as a project eng and I know that once our APLNG project is complete in 2016, all future projects will be far smaller and I'll have to compete for limited operations positions with engineers who have like 10 years worth of experience working for WorleyParsons, Hatch, UGL, Clough and Thiess (all dedicated engineering firms). Money is good now, 5 figures in AUD a month, but I worry all the time about my job.

Wow, u got paid in AUD? U work here in Malaysia or Australia? And how many years of experience u obtain before u reach the 5 figures salary? Wow u really motivate me. Currently u working with operator or contractor? It would be safer to be project engineer for operator compare to contractor right?

Need some advice and insight from sifu and otai here,
I have not-so-recently graduated friend whose having problem securing a job in the industry(upstream).

Background
- Fresh local grad in Petroleum Engineering with upper-second class. JPA scholar. Involved(and won) in several industry-related competition at international level
- Intern at SK but currently SK is saying that they don't hire fresh grad
- Got an offer during final semester by UMW but decided to snub it as UMW want him to start immediately(forego his study)

Initially he's focusing on the KL-based company, and have been to few interview but no luck. At this point he's willing to try anything, as long as he can kickstart his career as soon as possible.

My question is,
1) Is there any upstream company which well-known to hire this kind of candidate? Got lobang? tongue.gif

2) What advice would you give to someone in similar position as his? keep trying/cold call/start small/enroll in certain programme etc?

I work in Australia. I got my current pay after 3.5 years in industry. Working with the operator. I hope to move to Malaysia and get paid the same, but that's just a dream.

Actually it is less safe, a contractor usually just moves to the next project which may be with any other operator, depending on the economic climate. If you're a project engineer with an operator, we usually assume we're given 2 weeks pay and told to fark off once the project is finished.

That's why most project engineers have projects lined up with different firms. Finish one, quit and in 2 weeks start on another. But mind you this only applies to people with a decade or more of experience.

Good luck in which ever industry you choose to get into. You keep the same attitude you have now, you won't succeed in any industry you work in.

haiyo...attractive or not it's very subjective la...like you said got pros and cons, you think high pay comes without any extra risk is it?

focus on your studies first, graduate then you shall see and decide for yourself how you want to start your career

This is the problem with kids nowadays.
Yess, the salary is important, but it is not only rely from your certificate and experience.

There's something was not teach in your school but you need to learn it by yourself.
How to be effective & efficient executive, communication skills, handling problem & people behavior.
Sometime you need to learn in hard way.

Keyword is = your attitude.

By considering your certificate & judge from you attitude here, I suggest......go work with construction industry. It may suitable for you. smile.gif

I have just got an offered as assn proj engineer in a crane company. Thinking of choosing that as related to heavy industries and hence offshore/marine. Recently kinda hard to get a place in S'pore now..

My question is, what kind of technical skills I should focus on should I intend to move to ong field later on? What normally does the manager from o&g consider when getting applicants from outside o&g fields?

Thanks

hi guys. wanna ask, currently working as process engineer in glc palm oil mill. 1 year already. my jobscope is too wide, qc but not really qc (no software or qc system), process but more to management (no involvement in maintenance), safety, DOE, environment. degree in chem eng (process).

Want to find a job in o&g but i dont know where should i go. I mean I dont know what to offer in o&g. weak in thermo & heat transfer but currently i'm studying that subject myself.

Planning to improve my skills by getting autocad/design classes or any courses that may related with the industry. Any courses recommended? other than safety courses.

Steam Engineer certificate then only start to think about o&g. Are you with the S* company? If yes, thought their bonus great monthsss and great discount for buying the property developed by them?

Real case, someone start from boilerman and progress as Head in the dept now with Steam Engineer certs in an O&G operator. Also he freelance sometimes...

It will be never good if the 1st thing crossing ur mind for question is the salary. If u keep thinking salary only, O&G not suitable for u.
Think about the widest prospectives and experience gained after at least 3 -5 years if u r just fresh grad or with 1-3 years experience.

Experience and correct attitude. For SG, qualifications in term of cert is a mandatory due to their recent years of more stringent regulations and CP. Also, incident cases, keyword WSH Council.

Thanks, but I wonder what type of experiences count?
For instant, I might be moving to M&E, mainly on piping and HVAC. Will piping design and project management contribute if I wanna go offshore?
