Frequently Asked Question on what kind of bikes to get:

1) Aluminum bike - 10 speed Tiagra (maybe mixed Tiagra - Sora), priced around RM3k up- this would be the absolute lowest point i would say to start from... any lower and you will land outside of 10speed equipment and any upgrades will certainly be more than the difference you saved not buying this bike.. shimano launched tiagra with 10speed beginning of this year making this a considerable choice... also, this grade of bike will have a more common grade of cockpit (handlebar, stem, seat post, saddle) and cheaper wheels

2) Aluminum bike - 10 speed 105 (maybe mixed 105 - Tiagra), priced around RM3.8k up- most likely the same frame above with a different paint livery, this would be an entry level into shimano's definition of competition components... tiagra would be what they called the top tier among the enthusiast group.. although both 10 speed... but materials and feel... tiagra has a shift indicator while the 105 does not hence giving you a pro feel (what the bike shop will tell you)...mostly.. tiagra has a bit more plasticky bits than 105... some slightly more expensive models might even start offering slightly better wheels like mavic aksiums along with better slightly better graded cockpit...

- i would not try and go past 105 on a aluminum bike... the best brands like specialized or bmc will be selling an aluminum bike equipped with 105 for a little over RM5k... going 1 notch up into ultegra will lead you to start looking into higher end bikes as those bikes will surely creep past RM6k and most likely a mismatch between frame and component grades... you will be practically trying to pair a set of RAYS CE28N onto a Perodua Myvi if you get what i mean in car terms...

3) Carbon bike - 10 speed 105 (possibly not full 105), priced around RM7k up- this would be a foray into performance bicycles... although a carbon frame... but this are not the best carbon has to offer for 2 reasons... carbon cloth grade (less modulus, less weave, lower grade binding agents) and the man power / time needed (less complex layup schedules) to layup the carbon layers into producing a frame... basically a mass produced frame with the lowest production cost possible... not all that bad... it should still be on par if not better with the best of the aluminum frames in terms of stiffness.. basically, component should be similar or slightly better than the aluminum 105 bike depending on the price you pay...

- here i would name one which shocked me quite a bit recently... saw this Look 566...this http://www.lookcycle.com/en/int/route/velo...-bike-2013.html , but i guess a previous year model...... carbon frame with Mavic Aksium wheels... not a complete 105 with some downgraded cranks and calipers... a carbon frame with comfort geometry retailing for RM7.1k if my memory serves me right...

- price is slightly high for some people... but if you look at it...maybe under 30% more if you are looking at a Apex or 105 equipped Specialize Allez

4) free for all - death - bankruptcy - you name it...
- step into this and there will be no return...

Beside on the modern roadbike, there's also classic roadbike that worth to consider, if you're classic roadbike lover.

at best, this is considered a classic remake...


with columbus tubing at least... if there is any chance that anyone still makes a bike with reynolds 531 tubing, even better...

it has to be small round tubes and lugged in order to qualify as classic...

ceramicspeed is not cheap stuff... mind you... it is the last thing anyone would do on the list of their upgrades...

i don't use kcnc tho. just to show there are other red pulleys.

i open up my pulley bearings n repack with fresh grease.

red pulley a lot lar... dun need ceramic also have... KCNC made them as well, along with gold, blue, green...

and then there is token, and some other taiwanese brands.. whatever yanks yer chain....

got money.. buy berner pulleys lar.... that will blow yer whistle...

1. Which is better, hydraulic system or the conventional? I heard Mark Cavendish use it for a while(at recent TdF if I'm not mistaken) and revert back.

2. Disc brake is slowly making its way into roadbike. I heard there are some technical issues with UCI. Your take?

hydraulic brakes is something that I really missed from my MTB. the brakes are extremely responsive, and you do not to apply much pressure to engage them. in fact, its quite common to just brake with a single finger for the hydraulic brakes on the MTB. however for RB use, the braking power tends to be toned down in order to avoid sudden wheel lockups.

I guess one huge advantage on RB is that it moves the braking surface away from the rims to the disc in the middle, thus eliminating the problem of carbon rims overheating

for UCI, seems to be mainly 2 safety concerns. what happens in a fast moving peloton when different riders has brakes that behaves differently. and the very real risk of getting bad burns should skin happened to contact the hot disc surfaces (should not happen when riding, but a possibility in the event of a crash)

ever thought of how fast the wheel change with disc brake?

Cav was using sram hydraulic calipers (not disc) in TDF.... and he seems to be the only one using them...it's just a marketing ploy...

UCI does not condone disc brakes on road races... only cyclocross for safety reasons...

if people is counting grams... hydraulic brakes are actually reversing that as hydraulic systems ends up with heavier shifter, heavier hydraulic brake cables, heavier calipers... quite counter productive...

and depending on what you have now... you might have to spend a lot to convert it even to the sram hydraulic rim brake caliper...

hydraulics is nice given you have the calipers to match them... poorly made hydraulic brakes actually either feels spongy or just totally suck balls...modulation is the keyword in hydraulic brake systems... and maintenance (miao's favvy topic) is crucial....

and regarding the topic of removing the factor of rim heat... yes, it's true that it might advantage carbon rims where the heat factor might be a threat to the wheel and without that, they can make even lighter wheels...

but, you also have to remember that there is a factor of hydraulic brake fluids boiling.. and with poorly maintained (long time never went through bleeding)... any air bubbles within the fluid expands with the heat and then shit happens when you find your lever touches your handlebar and it still doesn't stop the bike... on the topic of whether mtb or roadies brake harder is a debatable topic, but you seldom find MTB have to sustain long and hard braking from high speeds on a descend like road bikes do....

and then there is also the topic of debate... the drag on the disc as usually the pads are sometimes slightly touching the rotors or the rotors might be warped or the interface is not tight causing it to fling around a bit and causing some drag... being the a~holes that roadies are who count even a 2 watt advantage from berner pulley systems... the drag would counter all the advantages of the upgrades they do....

it's a fun thing to own...
