- Brief History -

QUOTE
- Alienware is an American  computer hardware company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dell, Inc. -
- Alienware was founded in 1996 by Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila -
- the Alienware name was chosen because of the founders' fondness for the hit television series The X-Files, hence the theme to their products, with names such as Area-51, Hangar18, m15x, and Aurora. -
- It mainly assembles third party components into desktops and laptops with custom enclosures for high-performance gaming. -
- Alienware was originally established to tap a niche in the high performance gaming market -
- Also offers for sale rebadged computer peripherals, such as headsets, computer mice, monitors and keyboards. -
- The company products are also differentiated by their science-fiction based designs. -
- Dell considered buying Alienware since 2002, but did not take any action until March 22, 2006, when it agreed to purchase the company. -
- Initially, Dell maintained its competing XPS line of gaming PCs, often selling computers with the same specifications. -
- On spring of 2008, the XPS brand was scaled down. -
- On June 2, 2009, The M17x was introduced as the First Alienware/Dell branded system. -
- Alienware now represents the premium performance space in Dell’s consumer family of products -
- This launch also expands Alienware’s global reach from six to 35 countries. -

- Frequent Asked Question -

1.Q:I wanted to buy Alienware M18x but it is not available on Dell Malaysia. Where can I get it other than importing it?
A:Log on to www.illegear.com.

2.Q:Alienware TactX Keyboard and Backpack is not available on Dell Malaysia. Are there resellers at here?
A:Yes. Check it at the garage sales section.

3.Q:Are Alienware laptops upgradeable?
A:Yes but only applicable to M15x, M17x and M18x only.

4.Q:If I want to perform an upgrade but I am scared to do it, who can I find?
A:You can PM me (raymondtong94), kelvin_hata or putochip123.

5.Q:raymondtong94 can't provide GC but installation only and why must it have to be in the evening and night time?
A:I dont have enough modal to buy a GC so this is a temporary issue by me. Also, I am currently attending a course on Wednesday and Thursday, and having my internship for the rest of the days. So my life is totally full of scheduled time. Upgrading is considered as my another part time job to get extra income.

okay I just read a lot of reviews on killer wireless... mann they suck :S.. why are they so over priced then? frequent disconnections, crappy drivers, application not that good. Why were they so famous then? plus they've stopped producing any new WIFI cards from past 1.5 years yawn.gif.. seems like they are not going to make any new wifi card nemore... not sure though. I'd suggest you guys to google about them yawn.gif

Yesterday night when i was watching movie with my X51, suddenly "boom" and my machine shut down...Thought my 1 year old X51 just died on me, then after some checking, the machine itself still working fine but the problem is the power adapter, the whole thing smell badly like something burned inside...

Now temporary i'm using a dell laptop power adapter to boot up the machine and it still working fine...but i need a replacement, anyone know any other place to get power adapter which is cheap and suitable to X51 rather than go back to Dell?

If got warranty, claim for new adapter... if not... get dell quotation for new adapter... then search in lowyat forum someone selling new or second hand.. if not.... search lowyat plaza.... if not then no option n buy it from Dell. good luck.

And I know a lot abt refurbished item. I got someone working in dell so I am pretty sure I don't need to know about it from you.

You can print screen if u want.. I have no issues with it. I have the chat with me too. and fyi I calculated better spec than ur desktop (better CPU) for 14.5k. See again ur saying 15k maybe get ur facts right? u knw 500RM is some amount of cash not 5RM. smile.gif

you're welcome. And your point with the chat post? I don't get it. Maybe you can enlighten me.

My point is that I felt violated when i asked you why not? and you started talking about refurbished unit.. that came to me as you're comparing my new 1 week old unit with a refurbished unit. That made me pissed.

When I inquired I inquired with a NEW 1 week old unit... off course if mine was refurbished I wudn't inquire? Or would have stated that yes I have a 'refurbished' unit to trade it with a top up.

rings some bell now? and what I posted here is exactly what you mentioned to me... 4K+ n then 6.5K ur selling price... am I wrong to do so? I think I got u interested party to ask u for a refurbished M17xR4 unit to which u cud have said them u wanna sell for 6.5k. Still you're mad at me just makes me want to bang my head to the wall smile.gif

1. order dell online. it is better for you to customize and buy at dell.
2. rarely stores sell ALX version. the probability is low.
3. different. see the images :

Thanks for your answer, raymondtong94.
Is it possible to do customize order in dell direct store mid valley ??
I tried to customize, and I see it comes standardly with ALX chassis. Is that true that Malaysian Alienware.com sell all ALX by default ??
Thanks once again.

Will the Custom unbox our things when it reach Malaysia? Since the product/Alienware is kinda expensive also.

Hate to say it, but I dislike unsealed thing, haha ...

Alienware once have M15X which is 15" laptop but it has discontinued.

If you not aiming for big lappie, then M14X would be your choice smile.gif

Other than that are M17X and M18X.

M18X not available on dell site FYI.

apart from screen size.

M17X or M18X are PURE gaming latops with specially high end GPUs like Nvidia 680M or AMD 7970M, although on M18X you can use your GPU in SLI mode that means 2 same GPU cards working together for better performance.

M14x on other had is a mid range gaming laptop with Nvidia 650M GPU the highest it can support, this is because the graphics card is soldered on to the motherboard.

Now it depends on you, are u the person who likes to do a lot of gaming n likes to do upgrade every year or so in order to meet the requirements of new high end games to get better performance and visuals or you are the guy who just plays DOTA2 and HoN and similar games + u like portability etc. For the second option ill recommend M14x or you can get M17X with you're an enthusiast gamer. smile.gif

Hope that answers ur question. You can ask any question over here or for more better details u can PM or whats ap me.

But whats the prices for both the laptops?

Actually I'm more of a Dota player and also use it for work.

So I'll most likely be going for the M14X. But I need to know the price.

Also depends on which price you getting, you can also get different range of discount from 3%, 5%. 7% & 10%.

I am not sure.. you can always check the Dell Alienware to get quotations. I think M14x is around 3.5k to 5kRM depends on RAM, HD or SSD and what processor you're going to use.

battery life span on the M14x is ok only since it uses 8-cell battery. the M14x also comes with nvidia optimus graphics switching technology, which means it will switch to intel HD4000 automatically when 3D applications or games are inactive or not running, for the purpose to save battery life. however, if you select core i7 option, it will however, decrease your battery life.

You can disable the battery charging also if you don't want it to keep charge even 100% though.

So it can prolong ur battery life span.

You got the monitor offer also?

Not sure is it same with mine M14X R1 but you may try go to Bios (Press F2 when you power up your laptop) and change the "Charge behavior" to disable will stop the power input charge to your battery.

I only charge my laptop once a month if didn't really use battery mode icon_rolleyes.gif

*
i sourced my lappie else where.. but service tag etc.. still under dell msia. smile.gif
hence no offer on any monitor sad.gif
thx for the info on how to preserve my battery biggrin.gif

the battery wont die even if you leave the AC adapter plugged in without disabling the charge behavior. once the battery is fully charged, the battery sensor will automatically route the power to the laptop, to prevent overcharging. however, the battery will eventually degrade if you use battery less than 10%. recommended to left the charge in battery is 30%.

TongCN seems like you plan to plug in your baby 24/7. smile.gif

u can only add another GPU on m18X as it has the space to add another GPU. M17X doesnt have it.

guys, sifu is in a dilemma between M17x and Y500 now. rclxub.gif

i planned to get M17x cuz it has larger screen and i like to play games and watch animes/movies in that way. but after some comparison, i figured out that i could save the RM2000 budget on a Y500, which the performance may outperform a HD9970M (GT850M SLI). to simplify my problem, i write the pros and cons of my thoughts to prevent myself writing an essay. laugh.gif

QUOTE
M17x Pros
-Very large full HD screen
-Graphics switching technology
-Scissor switch keyboards for excellent typing feel
-Customizable backlit keyboard and laptop lightings
-Cool chassis design
-Dual HDD bay
-Massive 9 cell battery
-A multimedia laptop + gaming laptop (PS3/Xbox360 can be plugged in to the HDMI input port)
-Good speakers
-Excellent warranty service (of course, after bought by dell)
-Personalized owner name plate
-Dedicated multimedia keys
-Rubber feeling on the palm rest area for comfort

M17x Cons
-Glossy screen (not a problem for me as im an indoor user)
-Heavy/Not really portable
-Very Expensive, even upgrades may cost around RM2000
-Warranty service only has premium options available
-Rubber palm rest can leave scratch marks

QUOTE
Y500 Pros
-Large full HD screen
-Ultrabay switching
-Lighter
-Cool red backlit keyboard
-AccuType chiclet style keyboard
-Brushed metal feeling
-Above average speakers
-2 years international warranty as standard configuration
-Full size keyboard
-Cheaper

Y500 Cons
-Glossy screen is ok but panel is fingerprint magnet, difficult to wipe off if there is no moisture
-Red only backlit keyboard
-Full size keyboard isolation could be better
-Not upgradeable
-No dedicated multimedia keys (means integrated on keyboard multimedia keys)
-Fingerprints and smudges can stick on the glossy brushed metal palm rest area
-Warm palm rest (not comfortable for long term gaming)
-No graphics switching technology
-Small backspace key (which used quite the most)

not planning to get a very high end graphics card, as im more on watching animes and movies than gaming. Y500 is using GT750M now but im waiting for next year, the GT850M SLI. biggrin.gif

bro u cant judge now as by 850M u gotta see how tht card n AMDs card performs on new haswell. If you're planning to buy within a month or 2 then you can get better answers with facts. Rightnow ppl will just post thr opinion, although i wud go for alienware, simply coz it never gives me anyy problem.. if it does warranty is soo good i get tht specific part replaced with a new one... if the part cant repair, they will replace ur laptop. I am sure lenovo wont do tht. Secondly alienware has better resale value.. why? coz of the brand name n better physical quality than other laptops around... + the dell warranty. You go see 2 to 3 years alienware, people are still selling for 3 to 4k depending on condition.

with alienware u can upgrade GPU n CPU tht means after 3 to 4 years instead of selling ur laptop, u can enjoy the same alienware awesomeness n just get CPU n GPU upgrade. True it will cost some money but then hey ur almost getting a new laptop and latest laptop experience smile.gif

MY vote for now without proper facts for new GPU n haswell is for AW.

when haswell and new series of GPU are out n common n people have thr review on various forums then I can provide u with better explanations with facts.

cheers.

i think better u try illegear or sager laptop, i owned a sager but sell it and buy my m14xr2, my sager 15.6" doesnt feel hot at palm area even play intense game compare to my m14x now, its quite hot i would say, sager laptop also more user friendly, easy to clean, upgrade and cheaper than alienware, in terms of warranty i definitely say dell is the best. if i want to buy new laptop in the future, i will go for sager smile.gif

I want to develop some sort of evaporative cooling for my M14X. The air will pass over a wet towel to precool the air before it enter the fan. The problem is, the air will contain water vapor. will it damage the laptop? from my examination of the system, the fan seems isolated from the other part of the laptop.

I want to develop some sort of evaporative cooling for my M14X. The air will pass over a wet towel to precool the air before it enter the fan. The problem is, the air will contain water vapor. will it damage the laptop? from my examination of the system, the fan seems isolated from the other part of the laptop.

Not a good idea. smile.gif And yes it will eventually spoil ur laptop.

hi guys,
first time posting here.
one good thing about Dell is the warranty. My M14x R1 has claimed about 5 times warranty, for HDD failure and also motherboard replacement.

Dell has agreed to replace it with M14x R2 so an owner reporting in

Great thread!

$$$ wise the advantages that M17x provide over Lenovo Y500 is not worth the 2,000 budget.

Go for Y500, I can practically play everygame in High/Ultra settings with good FPS.

ur wrong. It IS worth it... first of all the warranty guy comes to ur house.. secondly u complain n they replace parts with new parts no questions asked.. third if cannot fix they give u a new laptop within one week. PLUS it's alienware! u cant compare with lenovo. The build quality/look/feel. Ur argument is plain wrong:)
i'd recommend everyone to go get alienware eyes closed but if ur tight on budget... get cheaper gaming laptop but then ur warranty wont be good and the laptop wont feel like an expensive laptop etc. So it all depends. U don't only compare prices with wht graphics the laptop has to offer. lol.

the warranty service already made part of an expensive option for the laptop.
if they cant provide top notch service to you, then what do you pay for? a lazy worker to visit your home and do nothing with your laptop? icon_rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

guys, sifu is in a dilemma between M17x and Y500 now. rclxub.gif

i planned to get M17x cuz it has larger screen and i like to play games and watch animes/movies in that way. but after some comparison, i figured out that i could save the RM2000 budget on a Y500, which the performance may outperform a HD9970M (GT850M SLI). to simplify my problem, i write the pros and cons of my thoughts to prevent myself writing an essay. laugh.gif
*

for me its quite easy to choose between y500 with m17x because they both are not so competitive.
If you compare y500 with m14x, it probably still stand a chance.
tis is because one is 17.3" while another is 15.6"
for sure bigger screen are better for movies and definitely gaming as well.
m17x is heavy and expensive but very powerful gpu which mean for real hardcore mobility gaming.
y500 is more towards budget gaming and overall daily computing and multimedia.

no, the RS-17. i will ask Prince J to customize it to the default glossy screen, as sometimes i will share with my friends to watch videos and need to have a better viewing angle. or perhaps the NTSC 90% gamut screen upgrade may helps.

but will be purchasing next year, give up this year's generation.

HI Guys I have a bunch of questions sorry if it quite n00b questions. I recently got a M17x r4 and it didnt came with Windows 8 DVD and there is no windows serial number or COA in the bottom of the laptop or under battery cover.....is it normal now?

1. The Unit i have shipped with 256 gb lite on ssd only with the OS installed in it. Now i want to sell it off and replace that and put probably 2x 1tb 7200 rpm drives or 2 x 750 gb 7200 rpm for now and use one of those as boot drives and later add a 128gb msata ssd and use it as a OS boot drive later.

So how do i do it any suggestions. How can i clone and migrate my windows 8 in the current 256 gb ssd to my hdds? Any guides for that...i heard alienware respawn and acronis image restroring software but another question is when i do that (restoring image to my completely new hdds and remove the 256 gb ssd completely) will windows 8 ask for a serial number or cd key? Any ideas and suggestions will be helpful....

even if you migrate your ACHI based OS from ssd to HD it won't perform well or in worst case not even boot up. I'd suggest you to do a clean install or clean restoration. If dell didnt give you windows 8 CD then call them n ask for it. Say you wanna re install. They will help u out then.

Weird, why i kept hearing ppl saying no OS DVD was included in the package but mine always have O.o?

Last time heard M14X and X51 both no included already. (Mine got)

Windows 8 now no more provide the CD-key sticker anymore. The OS came along will tie to your motherboard and the OS DVD cannot be installed on other PC sad.gif

I'm not sure where to change the settings in the Bios as everything looks fine for me.
And it has set to UEFI mode.

It's the bios long boot only. After Bios you can see that it only take 3 sec to Windows.

Yes. But make sure (i) you downloaded from official website, (ii) preferably UNMODDED and (iii) you are currently not having any kind of power outage because sudden cut in power during BIOS update will lead to bricking of the system and need to replace the whole motherboard.

Yes. But make sure (i) you downloaded from official website, (ii) preferably UNMODDED and (iii) you are currently not having any kind of power outage because sudden cut in power during BIOS update will lead to bricking of the system and need to replace the whole motherboard.

Thanks Mr.Doc notworthy.gif

Update: I have just updated my bios to A08... Is this the latest for M14x R1? Full boot is around 2 mins now rclxm9.gif

Hi, Doctor. Any idea on how to improve my Bios booting time?

It's been A12 Bios (Latest) when it came out of box.

Quite long time to take for boot up.

Is it a new system or you already installed all kind of software already? I doubt startup program play any role though.

I need to know your BIOS setting structure as well, see if you set anything that is not necessary but I never see X51 system sweat.gif

yea, it's a new system came around last 2 week.

Since the first boot, it already been like that already.

I didn't tweak any setting and it should be all default in the bios.
And this is the first time I faced Bios bootup can take like half a minute sweat.gif

But the Alienware on the Illigear website, where do they get it from and how does it work? Because the sepcs that they offer for the M17 is not even available as an option on the Alienware US website, such as the Intel Extreme Processors and the GTX680 4GB.

Hello guys, was just wondering any help or suggestion can be given for the problems I'm having...

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2827293

I'm not buying another Dell products if they can't get this problem solved. Even if they managed to I'd still be reluctant to. Two 45mins phone calls made and still they won't acknowledge the SSD has issue just because their onboard diag says the SSD is working fine.

Since when Dell's warranty service became this lousy? What happened to their "No questions asked"?

Sigh.

you dont have to come clean with them. explaining in details will certainly make them confuse.

last time when im helping my friend to give a screw call to ASUS, i insist a total replacement. and they really did but the period of waiting is longer than expected. mad.gif

you can claim warranty on that I guess and say them that you prefer carrying laptop around without the battery as it becomes more easier to carry around but then ur sound got problem. Maybe they change speakers for u and problem solved?

Watched a 3D BluRay once before, no lag though. It was a 3D concert BluRay though.

What computer are you using and what type of media?

Then there should be no reason for you lag. Are you retrieving the media it form an SSD? But that shouldn't make a difference though. Maybe try buying a 3D BluRay and see if it still lags. smile.gif

No chance until Alienware decide to remove optical drive from m14x.
Based on the early leaked picture on next m14 , it seems that there still an optical drive and as thick as the current R2

And the picture of the M17 here looks awfully alot like a dell. Which sucks. And if it remotely looks like one of Dells laptops, I'll be looking elsewhere for my next machine.

And what is the difference with the display now and an IPS display?

Hi all,

I have an alienware m17x, for about 2 years, my battery suddenly not working. Windows can detect battery, but it cannot charge as well, always at 96%. At first it will say "charging" but after awhile it will say "not charging".
Now my laptop only can work with AC supply, and if i off the AC my laptop will just die off and the battery cannot take over.

i tried:

update bios
uninstall microsoft acpi
FN + F2
remove battery, hold power button etc...

all didnt work.

when i run diagnostic, it says my battery power 96% and battery health is 66%

i press the button on the battery, it light up full bar.

Any ideas? Please help, thanks alot.

questions regarding any alienware computers are allowed to ask at here. even our member, TongCN whom just bought his X51 mini-ITX PC is listed at here too.

if you are finding the price for alienware desktop, you can surf dell.com.my for RSP of the alienware desktop.

the warranty provided in XPS and alienware lines are premium. so i dont think they dare to just add the rubber ring only. smile.gif
or possibility that the rubber ring comes as set with the subwoofer.

Hi guys! Alienware noob ere...just wanna ask sifus opinion here, should I buy the M14x now or wait for the new r3 model? I already asked Dell rep he quote me for around RM5.1K for:

-i7-3630QM
-12GB RAM
-32GB mSATA & 1TB 5400rpm HD
-2GB GeForce GT650M
-BD-ROM
-Killer Wireless-N
-and all default stuffs

I dont want to wait too long coz I need it to use it (other than for gaming)...just wanna know if it's worth it to buy now (these few days)...thanks!

i only compare those that we bought commonly.

the new alienware's revision chassis material is tempting. it is made of magnesium alloy. drool.gif
but just i wonder, will the CPU and GPU heat transfer to the palm rest area, or the palm rest area is rubberized to prevent excessive heat? hmm.gif

Can the Alienware M17x R4/3 run on SLI with dual graphic crads?

Cause I was just looking at other 17 inch laptops that can. So I am wondering if it can be done on a M17

not really as haswell consumes less power and gives out less heat. Plus the new 700 series nvidia also consume less power.

depends on your urgency to get a laptop. icon_rolleyes.gif

the specs for this alienware are not customizable at the moment, so its preferred to wait.

MYR pricing for 14 and 17 starting from RM4999 and RM6999 respectively. biggrin.gif
but none of them are customizable at the moment.

I think u can get really below rm6k price for the above specs and in terms of speed it's faster than the new Intel Core i7-4700MQ of the new 14 (pls correct me on this)...but in terms of energy usage etc that's another issue...

Anyone know how to shorten the bios loading time?

My X51 took so long on the bios there sad.gif

*
Ok, fixed my problem =.=
Any1 with X51 might wanna know this, lol

I getting this long period of booting because I plugged into the Discrete GPU's (a.k.a Nvidia card) HDMI instead of the Intel Intergrated HDMI which took me half minute to load.

Yesterday I changed the HDMI to Intel slot and guess what? INSTANT BOOT!

Press power button and poof, windows login screen already, lol ...
Might take a video on it next time thumbup.gif

i dont think its fat, same thickness though. probably alienware dont want to make users working in the office making a presentation with flashy laptops? laugh.gif

good news - after i watch the E3 video yesterday, the alienFX software is cooperating with games developers to work with their laptops lightnings. for example, lets say you have green lightnings to show that you have excellent health condition in game, then an attack occurs and it turns the lightnings to red colour, resembles code red case. when an attack is done, the lightning will turn back to green, yellow or red to show your health condition in games. if there are games that is strategic like, firstly, code blue conditions will generate blue lightnings, code red will generate red lightnings.

Haa.. this was happened when i played BattleField 3 on my m11x that time.

Health = blue and when got attacked, it will turn red XD

At first I didn't know about it and felt weird why after launch the game, my color turned blue (Default I always use green).

It's cool and hope future will get more titles on it.

Lol.. but sometime won't really notice the light lo while playing specially MX series' light area doesn't like the new one.
I also rarely will turn my sight onto the light zone when i focus on multiplayer gaming sweat.gif

Now the mouse pad is fully FX light, i think ppl will notice the light easier? When it start blinking, lol ...

Lol.. but sometime won't really notice the light lo while playing specially MX series' light area doesn't like the new one.
I also rarely will turn my sight onto the light zone when i focus on multiplayer gaming  sweat.gif

Now the mouse pad is fully FX light, i think ppl will notice the light easier? When it start blinking, lol ...

what if i told you, that the gamer had disabled mouse pad lightning? laugh.gif

everything is good
no customization
the hdd setting can change ourself?
*
Yeah, we can change the hDD ourselves no problems there nod.gif
But as mentioned in the Alienware FB page, its best to wait for awhile when getting newly released notebooks since the specs and customizations are not that matured yet in Dell Malaysia.
Last time when I bought my M14x R1, there was no laser nameplate for the many 1st buyers, which is downright ridiculous, who wouldn't want one when its included in the price hmm.gif

n the glowing grill is gone.. sad.gif

I prefer the older design based on what I've seen so far... and I will miss the glowing grill that's for sure, it was one of the most iconic design of the now ex-AW lineups sad.gif

Thanks for sharing the review notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
Not really sure whether potential buyers will be interested in thicker and bulkier designs, especially when everyone else is going slimmer and lighter hmm.gif

Update: Looks like the new AW 14 still has only one fan, but at least there are a whole lot more vents at the bottom hmm.gif

Yeah, those slot-load optical drives have been around since the R1 haha laugh.gif
Many people complaint cannot eject CDs, and slot-load optical drives also make installing Jack Sparrow programs/games more challenging sweat.gif
