help: wrt54gsv4 flashing - newbie question

this is my 1st time flashing a router, my new wrt54gsv4 is totally incompetent to surf net + run bt together, so i decide to try on other firmware

by looking into this page
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WRT54...lation_Tutorial

i know i need to flash dd-wrt.v23_mini_generic first,
then flash dd-wrt.v23.std.zip

i have a little question before my first flash in my life, i found there are
dd-wrt.v23_mini_wrt54gsv4 and dd-wrt.v23_wrt54gsv4 available in dl section, which v4 is my router version
so my question is, flash using generic and standard file as showm in tutorial or flash using wrt54gsv4 file to suit my router? or it doesn't matter ?

thanks in advance
For a peace of mind I would recommend you to use the wrt54gsv4 file though. I too used that file to flash my router and it works like a charm now.

I need some advice. I have a Linksys WRT54GS version 6 router which I flashed with DD-WRT Micro. I have an Aztech 600E ADSL modem. When I turn them on, I get internet connection, but only for a very short while, like 2 minutes. Thereafter, the modem is disconnected. I've gone into the management console of the router and tried manually to connect, but it doesn't. I have also hard resetted the Aztech modem. But it's still the same; Connect for 2 minutes, after that, disconnected until the next hard reset.

It doesn't seem to be a line fault because I'm typing this using a direct connection to the modem.

Anyone solved this problem before?

Bernard Yeo, Please check the Aztech 600E firmware version. if it is version 62.4.4 you will have to patch it

Dear all sifu,

I am very new in this thread. I just flashed my WRT54G v5 to DDR-WRT last night. I need some advices from all of you on the settings. There are too many pages in this thread and very sorry i have no time to read everyone of it. My questions are:

1. I am using BitComet and eMule to download movies. What settings should i set to maximise the speed but does not compromise my surfing of internet?

2. I shared the connection with two wired notebook. The two notebooks always on the download at the same time. What should i do so that the downloads won't affect either one of the notebook?

3. I read about the QoS and port forwarding all these stuffs but i donno how should i proceed with it. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thank you very much on your help.

Cheers. notworthy.gif

ldragon, my brother has another adsl modem. It's a Kasda. It also has the same problem. Connect 2 minutes or none at all.

Could this mean it's a router problem? This was like that even before I flashed the firmware. Is my warranty voided with the firmware change? shocking.gif

I am learning to set the QoS. What is the ideal value for download and upload in kbps? i heard many says to set the value at 85%-90%. I use calculator to compute and it has decimal points. What value should i use?

I am on the 512kbps/256kbps package.

Well the best is do a bandwidth test first. From there, then only you set it to about 90% of the download speed. Same way goes to the upload.

It's better to set higher values that you got from the speedtest as lower values will cause the QoS to limit your bandwidth, hence you can't utilize all of your bandwidth.

As it turns out, I connected that troublesome router to my office's Aztech DSL600E with a firmware 62.4.3 and it works like a charm!!

And I did upgrade the firmware on the original modem, tested it and it works fine.

1. It won't compromise your surfing, somehow it auto gives priority to http.

If you're not satisfied, try QoSing.

2. There's a limit to your internet, if it is 512kb, it will stay that way. If you want the bandwidth to be balanced, again, QoSing.

3. Try discovering yourself, and try reading the help from the ..more button on the web interface. There's a wiki at dd-wrt's website as well, that might help you.
About portforwarding, click on Applications and gaming, click Port Forwarding for single ports, or Port Range Forwarding for ranges of ports (u can use this for single ports as well, doesn't matter).
Type in the application name (again, doesn't matter, you can type $h!+ and it won't care), the ip address of the computer you want it to be forwarded to(check your lan connection, put a static ip (the range is between 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.255) and the port range or the single port.

4. Good luck.

5. I discovered another thing, bt doesn't seem to bother my gaming hehehehe with my router.

There's a x86 version of DD-WRT coming soon, we can easily convert our old rig into a router.

Upgrade the linksys firmware will void the warranty?? I never heard of this until I went to the shop after my linksys router internet port and LAN 1-2 port became unuseable after a thunder storm strikes my modem.. Anyone can help out with this issue?

WRT54G family is not a router + modem combo. It is just a pure wireless router which can be flashed to a 3rd party firmware for much improved stability and features.

The shopper told me that the factory even can detect it after we reflash back to the original firmware, wondering how they detect it. If I flash it many times dunno they can detect it or not, tempting to overwrite the flash memory inside. I did it twice just now.. No problem.
