help: wrt54gsv4 flashing - newbie question

this is my 1st time flashing a router, my new wrt54gsv4 is totally incompetent to surf net + run bt together, so i decide to try on other firmware

by looking into this page
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WRT54...lation_Tutorial

i know i need to flash dd-wrt.v23_mini_generic first,
then flash dd-wrt.v23.std.zip

i have a little question before my first flash in my life, i found there are
dd-wrt.v23_mini_wrt54gsv4 and dd-wrt.v23_wrt54gsv4 available in dl section, which v4 is my router version
so my question is, flash using generic and standard file as showm in tutorial or flash using wrt54gsv4 file to suit my router? or it doesn't matter ?

thanks in advance

For a peace of mind I would recommend you to use the wrt54gsv4 file though. I too used that file to flash my router and it works like a charm now.

Enter the following values at 'IP Filter Settings'
Maximum Ports: 4096
TCP Timeout (s): 90 or 120

currently im sharing (n charging) my internet connection with neighbours around (wired n wireless). the only security mode i use is mac filter becos i want the specific pc/laptop with permission can connect to my network, for easy management as well. if i use the wep/wpa key, clients can give out the key to any1 n thats not good. with mac filter clients management will be much easier becos its easy to identify, easy to block services etc. anyway, its ur choice, if u really wanna protect ur network then i suggest u use wpa. i dont know very much abt it maybe other members can help.

this is what i get from another forum for wireless secirity issue

Q. How to secure my wireless network?

A. You need to search your manual or online guides that explain the procedures to enable WPA-PSK on your wireless router / access point. In a nutshell, you specify a "password"/passphrase/passkey on the wireless router / access point and then on your wireless clients, you input the same "password"/passphrase/passkey. You do NOT need to do any other wireless security measures as they are weaker and do almost nothing more to protect your network, when WPA-PSK is in force. Do note that you need to use a STRONG password if not your wireless network will be susceptible to "dictionary attacks".

Q. Is MAC filtering / disable SSID broadcast / disable DHCP / etc secure?

A. No. They can be crack within minutes by any script kiddies.

Q. Is WEP secure?

A. It depends. Security in general, is rather subjective. In this case, it is not clear to that WEP is "safe enough" for you. On one hand, WEP is crackable but on the other, it requires effort and can be quite a form of deterrence to casual intruders. Do note that WPA-PSK comes with almost no extra costs, if your devices support it, so please consider switching over to WPA-PSK and in time to come, WPA2-PSK.
