QUOTE(sanosizo @ Dec 24 2006, 11:18 AM) currently im sharing (n charging) my internet connection with neighbours around (wired n wireless). the only security mode i use is mac filter becos i want the specific pc/laptop with permission can connect to my network, for easy management as well. if i use the wep/wpa key, clients can give out the key to any1 n thats not good. with mac filter clients management will be much easier becos its easy to identify, easy to block services etc. anyway, its ur choice, if u really wanna protect ur network then i suggest u use wpa. i dont know very much abt it maybe other members can help. this is what i get from another forum for wireless secirity issue Q. How to secure my wireless network?
A. You need to search your manual or online guides that explain the procedures to enable WPA-PSK on your wireless router / access point. In a nutshell, you specify a "password"/passphrase/passkey on the wireless router / access point and then on your wireless clients, you input the same "password"/passphrase/passkey. You do NOT need to do any other wireless security measures as they are weaker and do almost nothing more to protect your network, when WPA-PSK is in force. Do note that you need to use a STRONG password if not your wireless network will be susceptible to "dictionary attacks".
Q. Is MAC filtering / disable SSID broadcast / disable DHCP / etc secure?
A. No. They can be crack within minutes by any script kiddies.
Q. Is WEP secure?
A. It depends. Security in general, is rather subjective. In this case, it is not clear to that WEP is "safe enough" for you. On one hand, WEP is crackable but on the other, it requires effort and can be quite a form of deterrence to casual intruders. Do note that WPA-PSK comes with almost no extra costs, if your devices support it, so please consider switching over to WPA-PSK and in time to come, WPA2-PSK.

try checking the ip setting in your xbox. u need to change the gateway ip address to the same 1 as the router's ip address. im not so sure abt this becos i dont have any xbox. anyway, u can read this... http://www.chefelf.com/xbox/networking.phpmac filter is not secure becos every1 can spoof the mac address. they just need to find the valid/registered mac address by listening/sniffing the wireless signal. all 1 need to do then is just change the nic mac address to the same 1 as the valid 1 then voila! abt that wireless security issue, there's another option to increase the security which is thru using wireless virtual lan. i havent tried this method yet but if something went wrong i might do something abt it... QUOTE(MX510 @ Dec 27 2006, 12:53 AM) Anyone here have configured their DD-WRT working as hotspot? did you mean fully implementing chillispot? If that so, yes i had try it before and in the process of learning to do so. From my exprience, the easiest choice is by using worldspot solution (www.worldspot.net). But, if u are linux guru, u may try configure your chillispot with external radius, sql server, and uam server. It may cost u a lot of time and patience, personally i haven't found out my own solution yet. Still in the process but, if you are prefering what's called as in a box solution (or sometimes refer as captive portal) there's some choice that we can choose from. But, as far as i know Brainslayer won't implement captive portal in dd-wrt for some reason...

perhaps u can try add pfsense box for ur hotspot? I think it got a lot useful features to implement hotspot:
1. PPPoE server 2. traffic shaping 3. Dual WAN fail over 4. captive portal
I have a old PIII box running pfsense now. I don't have enough equipment to test it all though..hehe

Pfsense is based on monowall...but dont have usb-boot support... anyway, its a good choice for the time being...

Last time i did asked about this matter and if i'm not mistaken somebody reply with bad impression about this type of antenna. try google around about what actually linksys put inside those so called rubber -7dBi antenna, and u will be amazed to find that it don't even worth rm120

fortunately my decision was right by connecting all my customers with cable instead of getting a high gain antenna. thanks for the opinion btw. sigh... even linksys like to rip off customers. better use the home made antenna from freeantenna.com - the windsurfer.
