Some tips for freshies, put more focus on newspaper jobs advertisement rather than online job search (jobstreet, jobsdb, monsters etc) if u guys really wanna join o&g field. The reason is very simple b'cos most of the jobs posted online required few years exp in o&g before even consider your application. While jobs posted in newspaper are mostly suitable for freshies who just graduated and willing to learn.

Chances to get an interview also higher compare to online application. There are thousands online application for a single opening. The screening process is wide and time consuming. If someone apply directly by mail, I can say his chances for an interview is high.

Freshies need to be more patient. I've even spent 6 months to land my job in o&g. So, you don't think you can simply land ur dream job if you just apply for 2-3 months ago. Believe me, screening process take time as there are tonne's of ppl wanna join this pond:D. Your application need to stand out among the best in the pool.

Good luck to all freshies.

Also, how about the career path?

Dear Forumers please help me!

I graduated 1st class Hons with Bachelor of Chem Eng in 2008 and upon graduation I underwent OJT at Milan, Italy for 1.5 year. Upon completion of my OJT 2 months ago, I returned to KL office and currently station there.

I am looking for other prospects as currently there is nothing (literally nothing!) for me to do in KL office! I handed in my CV to many companies over the past 2 months however still not receiving any news from them.

I greatly appreciate your kind assistance to help me to see if there is any potential opportunity that is suitable for me.

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!  rclxms.gif  notworthy.gif

being a fresh grad with a Mechanical Engineering background, can somebody here pls enlighten on what kind of positions can we get into and the required knowledge or skills. For example:

a) Piping engineer- knowledge required: software ABC, Mechanics of Materials, etc..

b) ... engineer- knowledge required: ....

c)

at least I'll know which to focus in and what to improve on.

I find that its really hard to get into the OnG industry as a fresh grad.

Probably u should try searching for job online in some forum such as oilcareers dot com(.com).
If you looking forward to work as a field engineer then you can try applying online to SLB, BH,BJ Services,Weatherford and Halliburton. As I know they are hiring a lot of freshies. thumbup.gif

Hi there. My previous company sponsored me with a short welding course under the FMM institute. You can check out the website here. The website even offer certification for Black Belt Six Sigma. Pretty cool.

However, I can seem to find the certification course for welding in the website. Maybe you can email them to find out more? I hope that I've helped.

thanx for your help. Yea, u are correct. Have called FMM, and they don't have welding inspection course. they have only welding, the not for o & g one.

Yep..same with me.
i was unemployed for 6 months after graduation. sent uncountable resume online and offline.
try to score everything employer needs, sent it thru online (email, jobstreet etc) but do also sent if thru snail mail.
at the end i got 2 offer, from o&g consultant and o&g contractor for offshore installation.

try look up every oppurtunities. look for job search, recruitment firm, blogs, facebook and etc.
remember, sending resume is only to secure u a job interview, whatever u say and act in interview matter most.

Why don't u try and apply thru the website, or use snail mail, instead of depending on other people.....Working environment pretty hectic but normal la, u want more money, u spend more time and energy.... Fresh Grad pay is from RM3.5k.

Triad,

Which one did you choose?

And if I may ask, which one is better in term of:
1.) Salary
2.) Work-life balance

anyone know about PUSB Engineering Sdn Bhd in Miri? Being offer a graduate design piping engineer position there but with 4 years bond (low salary lo). Job scope mostly related to PDMS. Any comment in this? Is PDMS widely used in O&G or any good prospect in this? Thank you...

Gotta agree with you. Spending time in South China sea does not make you feel closer to home than working in the North Sea. I would not say that you must avoid Msian ONG companies at all cost. We all gotta start somewhere.

The basic salary maybe not the highest compared among competitors/other service companies. Like me only RM2k++. (Since I'm base in Malaysia sad.gif) Maybe the basic can be higher if you have experience working in offshore before. But total salary include allowance would be RM7-8k (if work in a full month).

Anyway, you will be entitled onshore/offshore allowance when working per day. If you still in probation, you get the lowest, USD30 (I think, forgot already). Since I'm in Grade II now, I will get USD70/day when offshore and USD 40/day when onshore. Other benefit like KWSP, SOS and others (can't remember. tongue.gif)

Apis jay,

How long have you been working with fugro......wat about the salary increment.....so every time we go to office at KL we are entitled to get 40 usd.....nice one....

People somehow need to find a pedestal to launch their career first la and there's no other place better than our very own backyard to gain exposure and experience.

Everybody wants to earn USD and Euros, but first you need to build up your skillset and experience before aiming that high. It's not easy to apply for an Oil & Gas job in other regions without any substantial experience in the field.

my advice is, Do not be choosy in your 1st oil and gas job. Try to penetrate the industry first and learn and understand the all kinds of oilfield services on the field and slowly work your way up to the discipline you prefer..

I've already work with Fugro for 2 1/2 years (Mainly in Malaysia and Thailand). I'm still seeking for experiences which is still a lot to learn.

About salary increment, so far I get increment annually or you have been promoted to another grade (eg: Probation>Junior). Plus I get 13 months pay annually.

Actually, I don't have to come to KL office frequently since I'm a 'Field Staff'. Most of the time, I'm at home either for holidays or standby for the job. USD40/onshore allowance applies when you working onshore and travel to another place, mobilise equipments and etc.

To be the truth, Fugro is quite a big name for Seismic and Positioning services in OnG sector in this region. More info: http://www.fugro.com
