Hello guys.... i just wanna ask a very simple question.
Is the O&G industry a trade-off of social life for money (for an engineer) ? I'm interested in joining but I still want a LIFE.
*
I assume we are talking about an offshore position here. It depends on how you define your 'social life'.

It's a very common perception among job seekers and those in the industry that offshore workers have NO LIFE. True to some degree because you spend most of your time on the rig battling the heat and rain working your socks off.

But once we get off the rig, we party hard. I mean real hard. You still get to dine & wine and club like usual with your colleagues or friends you met at the rig, or flirt around whenever you are on land. So you see the social life is there, but the real pain in the ass for all offshore workers is time management. You will never know what will happen tomorrow. It only takes a call from your boss to screw it all up.

Take my advise. If you want "LIFE" and go to cinemas with Wed & Fri nights with your lovey dovey girlfren, stay onshore.

If you are a single bloke, then i think you should go for it. The parties are mindblowing crazy.

Since youre taking petrophysics, than its very likely you will work in office (although you can always try a diff position). Petrophysicist is quite in demand in Malaysia, since its quite hard to find locally breed petrophisicist (mostly regional or expat). In oil companies or consultants, you'll work in the office (not lab). Your job will be assessing well log data to determine reservoir quality, fluid, pressure, etc. You will be busiest during drilling season. Other than that, its just a normal office hour.

IC, what about for those with BEng in Mechanical? What are the positions possible in OnG for Mechanical?

Hey guys, I have graduated with B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering with excellent results. The problem is I graduated with a 3 year degree (UK).
I would like to get into the offshore business preferably field engineering/technical. I have applied but yet to receive any replies.
I wouldn't mind even starting from a technician level in the oil and gas field.

Any suggestions what should i do?

Is Ranhill Malaysian company? What about WorleyParsons? It's Australian company is it?

I came across Ranhill Worleyparsons so I think there must be some relationship between these 2 companies?

Anyone care to enlighten me regarding this please?

not necessary...there are various positions in the industry..ranging from onshore to offshore..

if you're office based, then there's no difference from other occupation..but of course you don't earn the same amount of money that offshore can give you...unless you work for 7-8 years in the office for example.

dude, there's no "free meal" in this world..be realistic

Hello all. I have a question. Given that I'm a female, mechanical engineering student, would it be wiser for me to resume doing the pure mech degree course or something more specific? Thanks a lot. =)

You can't be this sexist right?
Well yeah, from my POV, the world of engineering is, though.
