Hello folks, I just started of brewing my own coffee. So I bought french press from IKEA and Hario grinder from coffeeritual. Got question, do I have to clean the grinder every time after use it? Thanks in advance.
*
IMO, depending on the frequency and how much grinds it retains in the grinder, the old and leftover grinds will get stale. You certainly don't want to incorporate them into your next cup especially if you're brewing. Again different beans will have different profile. Some are oily, some less. It's always good to clean off any leftover grinds. Put it this way, brewing coffee is all about consistency and maximizing control factors ( grinds size, temperature, humidity, brewing time etc etc ). But i guess cleaning your burr grinder do comes with a challenge. Reason why some do not like to dismantle them completely is that the grind setting needs to be re-calibrated. Otherwise, a gentle sweep with a brush will do just fine removing any retained grinds.

(p/s : Below depicts my probable last cup of coffee before letting my machine go to a new owner. sad.gif )

You just missed it. Sold it this evening to a gentlemen. Anyway you can get it at https://www.seattlecoffeegear.com/non-press...presso-machines.

Separately, I'm selling a latte art pannarello steam wand which I got it for rm60. Letting it go at rm40. 10/10 condition. Only used for 8 months. Excellent tool to froth silky milk. Serves as a wand extension too. Suits best for Saeco Poemia coffee machine or i guess any steam wand with 6mm thickness.

Breville Malaysia not bringing in the machine. U need to purchase it from overseas.

Why not purchase the double boiler and a good grinder instead of the Oracle?

Oracle selling point is the auto tamping and patent frother. I'd say the johhnny want it for that.

Hi all coffee lovers,

I'm totally new to this coffee machine and never handles any coffee machine before. Me and my wife loves coffee (we only drink coffee during weekends) and would like to get 1 espresso machine for home use. Budget around RM2k-RM3.5k. Have been searching on the net on machines and understanding more about making good coffee etc. Interesting! but still a lot to learn.

So far, I have shortlisted a few machines and hope sifus could advise and comment on the machine.

1) Nuova Simonelli Oscar: RM3,500 (with bundled accessories ie. s/s tamper, 2 s/s pitchers, 2 shot glasses, thermometer & knock box)
Question:
Is this machine suitable for beginner like me?
Which brand/model entry level grinder should I buy? Budget max RM1k.

2) Rancilio Silvia: RM3,450 (standard package)

3) Gaggia Classic: RM2,238 (standard package)

4) WPM KD-210S2 / KD-270 : RM2,599 / RM2,999 (standard package)

5) Breville BES870 : RM3,350 (standard package)

As mentioned just now, I only drink coffee during weekends. On weekdays, very unlikely due to morning got no time, need to rush to work and evening, reached home quite late and avoid coffee afraid later 'sleep standing' due to caffeine.

Base on my my potential drinking frequency, should I pay more for by getting Oscar or Silvia or should I get entry level machine eg. Gaggia Classic/ Evolution or WPM KD-210S2? and then pay slightly more for better grinder eg NS Grinta, Baratza Virtuso etc?

Thanks in advance for any advise, view and comment. Thanks.

Cheers.

I can only vouch for the BES870 as i have it. What I can say is that since you are not a frequent drinker(I make mine on the weekdays during rush hour, need about 10minutes to prepare 2cups, inclusive of starting up and clean up). The build in grinder is okay to use, but tends to spill out due to a smaller portafilter. For an all in one, it does get the job done; so no major complains for me.

Where did you get the quote for the Oscar though? Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me, sans the grinder.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Initially aiming for BES870, but now is pricier with GST, am monitoring and waiting lazada for better deal.

Oscar, got the quote from Dankoff Coffee. Yes, very good price, the cheapest so far. Even amazon and ebay are selling at around USD1,200.

How much you paid for your BES870? from lazada?

Cheers.

cshuang: Depends on how much you're willing to tinker with it, wait time, and how much money you're willing to part without crying inside.

For a non-fussy experience and the ability to pull a shot + froth at the same time, pick the Oscar. (And yes, that's a sweet deal). The Silvia and Classic is a single boiler, and you have to wait a little between tasks. Not a huge wait, but ya know the new generation... *waves tongkat*

Silvia vs Classic - Between the Silvia and Classic, the additional 1k for the Silvia seems to be mostly for a bigger boiler and the ability to froth milk better (without doing any mods on the Classic). Also you can get better shots from the Silvia, but only if you know how to play/tinker with it. Both of these are great to geek out on! But if you aren't willing to spend time to understand the machine/coffee making, go for the Classic. The Silvia has this thing where when the boiler is empty, it does not autofill unless you do some stuff, which can be damaging to the boiler if you're careless (or too sleepy while handling it).

Silvia vs Oscar - Even though Silvia could only do one thing at a time, some people prefer the Silvia because you're able to play with the temperature more, and get a better shot. Oscar has a better frothing ability, but it's not to say that you can't do a good microfoam on the Silvia. Again the Oscar is less of a hassle for those who just wanna straightaway buat kopi.

I've got a Classic recently, and my priorities were to be able to geek with it. Wasn't keen on forking out an extra 1k for the 'upgrades' in Silvia, nor was I keen on the boiler-refilling-prob (partially cuz i'm careless macam sial wtf). Also, another point of consideration was that the Classic has a lot of replacement parts around and knowledge support, because it's been around for so long. Wasn't a hassle at all to work with it.

For KD-570, it's also known as Sunbeam EM7000 if you wanna look into it further... I think you would be quoted for a bundle too, with a grinder - A friend has that machine and he's happy with it. The bundle came up to 3.5k~, which might be comfortably within your budget. Also can pull a shot and steam milk at the same time. Just make sure that you will get support from the supplier if anything happens. Did consider the BES870, but read reviews that the grinder is not fine enough for espresso.

...which leads to the next point: Grinder > Espresso machine. The Baratza is a great start for grinders! You seem to have done research, so won't repeat what you probably already know. I would go for your second option; cheaper espresso machine and better grinder, esp since you're only using it on weekends.

A two-cents; if you're not willing to go for cheaper espresso machines than your choices here, the Classic is a pretty good deal. It is cheaper than your other options, and gives you room to get a decent grinder + happier wallet. As is, it's good for beginners. Malas oso, boleh guna coffee pods. The selling point for this is that, when your tastebuds become more refined and you yearn for a more cafe-standard espresso, you have the option to make it as such.

Apologies for the wall of text, but I hope this helps. If there are any mistakes, feel free to correct me.

Great! Really appreciated your view, make a lot sen$e to me. thumbup.gif

Yes, am aware of WPM is a rebadged of Sunbean, just worry about quality of parts and it's made in china. Taobao is selling. Noticed EM6910 (KD-210S2) has some negative reviews (issues) compare to EM7000. I suppose EM7000 (KD-270) is a newer and better machine?!

May I know how much you paid for Classic? From which seller? I think lazada's price is the cheapest. From the net, there is 2015 version with slight mods/improvements, but feedback was not good (amazon). If I go with Classic, which grinder should I get? Which grinder are you using now?

Have you done any mods on your Classic?

Cheers.

Glad it made sen$e, lolol. Really fired up all my cinapek skills when looking for mine under a budget.

Oh, didn't know about that it's a rebadge of Sunbeam... thought it was just marketed under a diff name. Well, my friend is located in Oz, so his is the Sunbeam stock. You probably know more of the WPM than me; barely did much research on it. Saw some reviews for the EM7000, wasnt very inspiring to say the least. But sometimes it's based on luck.

I paid RM2111 from Lazada. They also have an instalment plan that you could take an advantage of! The one I got isn't the latest Classic 2015, but you could call and double check. I got my grinder secondhand - it's a Compak K3. Before this, considered Rancilio Rocky (can find secondhand in Gumtree SG or new SGD600 @ Spinelli SG/RM1855 @ Cuppa) or a Baratza Encore/Preciso. Would suggest the Baratza because you could also easily grind for filter coffee (pourover, french press etc) if you are inclined that way; even people in the coffee industry would go for that.

Not yet! I'm missing a couple of tools to fix the pressure, but hopefully by the end of this mth it could be done. The froth wand is still the original, because I could get microfoam from it. Filter basket is switched to a non-pressurised one (VST 18g). Temperature control (PID) will be much later because it is a little pricey if you're a total newbie at electronics. I think the most important mod should be the pressure; ideally coffee is extracted at 9 bars, but the Silvia/Classic/Oscar has 15 bars. Coffee extracted right is like porno weh. At 15 bars, it will still be too gushy and fast, even though my grind is really fine and tamped hard (unless I'm doing something wrong D:)

wouldn't exactly say a rebadge for sunbeam.. if you noticed all the subtle details.. sunbeam em6910 is vis-a-vis kd-210s (not s2). this earlier iteration do have lots of issues (as compare to the later s2). the other similar machine to em6910/kd-210s is krups xp618050(available in the usa).. since these are thermoblocks, it's certainly cheaper than boiler types machine.. for the price you pay in m'sia, it's a bit pricey..

we're getting our kd-210s2 directly from china and we have confirmed that parts are available should the unit requires fixing (dankoff m'sia do accept wpm machines, not sold by them, for fixes).. our white kd-210s2 + wpm grinder comes in at about less than rm2.2k with shipping

and if you're picky enough, you may also stumble upon lots of negative reviews from almost all the consumer brands espresso machine (sunbeam, silvia, you name it).. btw, kd-270 is not newer.. it's just more expensive with added sensors and electronics..

guess the main and honest question is, how much are you willing to plonk down for your setup?

Hi,
Thanks for the correction. So, the KD-210S2 is an improved version of EM6910/KD-210S. Should be less problems then. Mind to PM me the contact for China seller? Which model did you order for the grinder? Z-15?

Just noticed lazada reduced the price for Gaggia Classic to RM2,111. Very good price. Tempting.

Anyone has experience with Gaggia MDF Grinder? Any good?

Cheers. Have a great weekend!

Been using the machine since December last year. Purchased it at bangsar shopping centre. ESH for rm 2599. Looks like price has increased since.
