The Thomson router are known for its crap latency/ping issues. Changing it will definitely provide you a better gaming experience but don't know to what extend you are expecting from it.

I played 5 different online games everyday but don't have any issues for latency/ping after changing the router.
My both house currently have UniFi VIP 20 and Maxis 10MB respectively which I don't see a difference in gaming at all.

In fact I'm more dissatisfied with UniFi than Maxis. It has this problem of 'disconnecting' players if more than 3 people are playing the same game. Maxis doesn't.
*
So anybody can clarify this problem?????

vince have u try playing steam game? dota ?

i don't know if Thomson is known for such issues.... all I know is I don't get any improvement from changing routers, same crap. Maybe you're lucky...

What is a known fact is that Maxis network itself has terrible latency compared to TM due to IX peering agreement (I know some IX people, this what they say to be expected). I've tried bypassing the router with a linux PC with VLAN tagging connected directly to TM modem. Same latency issue. Trace route shows many hops to a destination. For example, trace route to Starhub, why does it go from SG to HK then back to SG? What's up with that?

Real culprit behind Maxis latency issue is poor routing in Maxis network. Thomson router issue add more pain to routing issue

Yes I do but not much. I still prefer Dota 1 in G@rena somehow. Less stress. But still for Dota 2, I didnt experience any delay issues often. Only sometimes.

I'm not so good with network field but I do have a family member that is actually an expert at this field. Yes I been told by him that Maxis routing is pure crap which is exactly like what you said. But still somehow I didn't get any lags from my game. Currently im playing 2 games from SEA and 1 from international server. For the international server, im getting less than 90 ping from all the players. Either way it doesn't matter to me how big they route around the world as long as it works fine on my gaming.

This is the reason why the ping is so high:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The router might have SOME effect but I doubt you can get very much faster if your connection routes to JAPAN to reach Singapore servers.
I think Ronnie should put this as a warning in FRONT PAGE to prevent gamers to use Maxis Fibre.
Anyone else knows if VPN solves this?

What I am wondering is why is NTT routing the data through japan. I'm pretty sure NTT has peering with star hub in Singapore. NTT even owns shares in star hub. And maxis trace route to soft layer Singapore goes through the same NTT line directly to Singapore

FTTH does not direct connect to starhub but connect to singtel and then route to starhub

what make me angry is: maxis non FTTH network (like corporate leased line) is direct connect to starhub like what TM, TIME do..

are you using wifi at home? or LAN wired?

if LAN wired, i got Maxis about 165ms, and Unifi is 5ms...

Conclusion... Maxis is currently very very bad at latency to major game servers...
so, use it only for surfing/ youtube/ download.. is ok... NOT for gaming...

we all know oversea pipe required $$$
i think trunk to spore is the cheapest for us,
but im still scratching my head why they route it to other country

my speculation is... maxis is buying some cheap pipe from Japan
but they can't used up their volume...
hence to save cost rather than using premium some pipe... they route it there

this is all business afterall...
in this case, i confirm all gamer r going to stuck this way until the contract expired
