My office use Maxis 2Mbps leased line with a few static IPs. I'd masked my office internal IP for security reason.

Now that you mentioned it, I gave it a try between my home and office Maxis connection

Ping to imail.starhub.com

Maxis Business Fiber 4M over TM access: 60ms
Maxis Home Fiber 10M over TM access : 230ms

They're both over TM access... so I guess there is some preferential routing for business...

dunno is heat problems or not, when heavily download by BT, it will auto restart, even i already put a notebook cooler under the router, both maxis router and tm modem. just the maxi srouter auto restart. tm modem no problems at all...

Added on September 20, 2012, 5:03 pm
same with me, download 30GB perday. router will auto restart when BT, few times within hours. but auto connect is take around 1 minutes.
*
you probably got a lemon one....maybe should call maxis and ask to replace the router?

FYI, I've done heavy BT from at least 2 PC at the same time for several hours straight, router was holding steady.
So far so good, no need for cooler ( for me at least).

I instead place it vertically instead of horizontally, that made good sense to me.
Using a fan on the exterior only cools the plastic cover, the moving air doesn't exactly reached the CPU.
I think the hot air trap underneath needs better flow.
Placing it vertically allows the ventilation holes at the back to be more exposed, allowing heat to dissipate better.
I find the router is less heated when placed vertically instead of horizontally

I don't expect the TM modem to suffer much during heavy usage since it's not doing any routing, just bridging the traffic, the load on CPU should be minimal.

I've let mine run 24/7 for the past 15days (from the system uptime info). Let's see how far it can go before it hangs....

also i want to see maxis 14 provider channel that they signed earlier in JUNE, do you think that is different channel from satellite astro or only maxis?  sweat.gif
*
nah....the 14 provider deal was for maxis own IPTV infrastructure....i heard that project is canned.

Now, maxis is focusing the astro collaboration...

Only 1 smartphone is able to connect to wifi out of 1 PC (wired & wifi, 1 laptop.. another smartphone (wifi)
Not sure if got power outage onnot..

Waste my time on the phone with their tech support.. somehow the guy change wifi channel from 11.. and hard reset the goddamn Thompson router... now it is impossible to connect to the wifi liao.. should have known better.. so obvious that there is a problem with the bloody router.. since internet connection is available..
vmad.gif
So pissed off.. and they cant tell me when their Tech Support can come over to change the router.. say need to check this n that..

complete total utter bullcrap from MAxis tech support..

after hard reset, the smart phone still can connect to wifi? But PC cannot?
Is it windows 7? When the PC connect to the router, does it say "limited access"?

Try removing the SSID of the router that is memorized under "manage wireless networks" of Network Connections. Then reconnect again and see if it prompts for key.

I see you all are still busy with the thomson wifi router.

really, maxis should dump their contract with thomson and provide a better one.
this is really making maxis's name bad.

me for one will never ever have anything to do with maxis again.

good luck guys.
*
this particular one is a network issue as conveyed by peri peri. i too faced it and spoke to their engineers....it was a broadcast storm in the network.

to me it looks like maxis network is giving the thomson a bad name... public ip issue, network latency, slow browsing....now this dhcp ip issue. they have a lot to iron out in the network i guess.

really?
so it is maxis's problems not thomson?
maxis really has to get their act together.
but I wont buy a thomson product either.
well, an actual network problem, but users might think it's the router unstable. They'll think it's overheating, and run off to lowyat to get usb fan... biggrin.gif

to be fair, the thomson product has it's issues too albeit a little minor. The wifi signal coverage probably leaves much to be desired for certain user. For me it's OK, i don't have too big of a house, so it's adequate.
An the GUI seems to have little features to play around with. Though I think this more of Maxis control, since I notice the command line is pretty customizable and have quite some features.

Other than that, i find it pretty stable for my extensive thrashing. Might not work for some users. I think it's more of a product limitation.

Maxis should give an alternative for users to choose, at least 2 different routers. Maxis should take the initiative, since there's no off the shelf router with voice ATA port. Usually ISP grade routers only have this kind function. Which explains why you can't get thomson off the shelf.

I have both Unifi and Maxis connected to the same BTU. Unifi is stable whereas I am facing the same problem as others here with Maxis's Thompson router. So I don't quite understand why it is TM problem.
*
Different vlan, different behaviour. Same physical link, doesn't mean upper layer behavior is the same for all.

This started almost at the same time for affected users. So network issue is a possibility. Though I don't believe it's TM fault entirely, probably interconnection issue between border of Maxis-TM.

Just change the router 784 from V2 to V3. Yes, there is V1 to V3 and same design.
Technician told me V1 and V2 have overheated problem and it restart by itself... no officially admitted by Maxis.
V3 no complain on overheat or restarting yet but Power Plug have complaints but not big deal.
Is V3 solved my Wifi signal weak issue? NOPE, he face this problem from Condo/Apartment customer only because it the signal gone weak in ridiculous short distance. So, i've no choice.... re-cabling and move may set nearer to my cctv.

For those who got the Black Version Thomson 799.... You guys are freaking lucky, just found out tht's for 30mb package dude!
The maxis tech guy told me it's a top range router and dun have all this problem we facing. And he did distribute to few 138 package user by no choice. I want him to give "No Choice" but too bad he said got no more unit in hand.
*
any photos of this V3?

I'm using Maxis TechnicColour v3 router. I have the same few seconds disconnection problem between my wifi devices and the router. It happens few times a day, almost everyday.
*
these days, new routers have a thing called auto channel selection which periodically scans the wifi surrounding and changes channel automatically if necessary. That will result in a few second disconnection when the wifi jumps to different channel. I have experience this with some of the newer asus routers, maybe that is what is happening with this Technicolor v3 router. But best to check with Maxis if it's an actual problem....

High ping issues is the Thomson router problem. Don't know how many times need to repeat this.
*
That's not true. Maxis have worse peering compared to TM. That's why the ping is worse. If local ping is good, but international ping to game servers are bad, how is it router problem?

I've tried the Thomson, Unifi's D-link, and WR-841ND with OpenWRT, my brother still complains lousy latency for gaming on Maxis. Change router also no point, Maxis simply not good for gaming, stick to UniFi.

The Thomson router are known for its crap latency/ping issues. Changing it will definitely provide you a better gaming experience but don't know to what extend you are expecting from it.

I played 5 different online games everyday but don't have any issues for latency/ping after changing the router.
My both house currently have UniFi VIP 20 and Maxis 10MB respectively which I don't see a difference in gaming at all.

In fact I'm more dissatisfied with UniFi than Maxis. It has this problem of 'disconnecting' players if more than 3 people are playing the same game. Maxis doesn't.
*
i don't know if Thomson is known for such issues.... all I know is I don't get any improvement from changing routers, same crap. Maybe you're lucky...

What is a known fact is that Maxis network itself has terrible latency compared to TM due to IX peering agreement (I know some IX people, this what they say to be expected). I've tried bypassing the router with a linux PC with VLAN tagging connected directly to TM modem. Same latency issue. Trace route shows many hops to a destination. For example, trace route to Starhub, why does it go from SG to HK then back to SG? What's up with that?

The only time I notice mine lights turned off, was 2 minutes after power on...it turns off all except power light, which turns blue for 3 seconds, then all back to green again. Seems to that once every time i power on the router.

I thought it was normal since it didn't affect my usage in anyway. I notice if i disconnect all wifi devices connected to the router, the wifi led turns off, but the signal is still there. I connect a device again, the wifi led turns on back. Different behaviors on this v3 router.
