QUOTE(xess @ Sep 8 2007, 06:32 AM)
desu is like a statement and deshou is asking for agreement.

e.g.

anata wa otoko desu.
you're a guy.

(anata wa) otoko deshou?
you're a guy, aren't you?

ok, got it... desu pronouce as "des" right?

It's kinda optional, you can pronounce it desu or des. Generally 'u's and 'i's are schwas and you don't have to pronounce them out.

mitai can also mean something like want to try.

e.g.

sore wo yatte mitai
I want to see if I can do that.

Try learning the grammar first. There are a lot of resources out there. Once you get used to the structure of the language, you'll learn very quickly as all you need is to expand your vocab and learn cultural references.

gyakushuu is 逆襲 - counterattack
hangeki 反撃 and hankou 反攻 also mean counterattack.

What is your sentence? Maybe the romaji is wrong?

okay, this thread is kinda on the down. So, I would try to spice things up.

My question is "Do you speak Japanese like a girl?"

What I want you to do, is record your voice saying these three lines..

Line #1: "Iin janai?"
Line #2: "Jouzu desu ne?"
Line #3: "Dou kashira" or "Dou darou?"

I will give your recording to my Japanese friends, and they will tell you whether you speak Japanese like a girl or not.

Sounds Interesting?

Correct. Anyways, if you want to put your verbal Japanese to the test, you can PM me or attach your voice recording in your replies.

The reason why is, many of you guys learn verbal Japanese from cartoons. Mostly, cartoon characters are female. I want to see the influence of Japanese female cartoon characters on your real-life Japanese verbal skills.

I will send your voice recordings to my real-life Japanese friends (male friends) and see how "feminine" your Japanese really is. Interested? You can started recording now.

For learning any language, listening is very different from other skills, and you've just gotta do it first, and hit it hard. It is probably the MOST important skill because think of how humans learned language before the "technology" of writing. The grammar you find in anime (variety of everyday styles slang male-female) is not always what you find in books (polite public style for beginners).

Maybe try a small chunk of the anime at one time and keep repeating, sometimes with and sometimes without the romaji if you can get it. At your level, you may need a translation too. Don't be discouraged -- each particle has many more usages than you know, a few thousand vocab items are minimum, and there are over 100 kana forms -- you still need to work on it.

If you MUST use an anime approach, you can get one of those books that teach beginners via manga (likely RM$70-100).

Good luck, I know the struggle -- still doing it now!
