For a handset with such a broad range of standout features and specs, the Galaxy S II is remarkably easy to summarize. It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period. Of course, a 4.3-inch screen size won't suit everyone, no matter how stupendously thin the device that carries it may be, and we also can't say for sure that the Galaxy S II would justify a long-term iOS user foresaking his investment into one ecosystem and making the leap to another. Nonetheless, if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities, the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

Is it perfect? No, of course not. While we like some of Samsung’s tweaks – the Kies air app is surprisingly useful, for instance – we’d prefer to see a clean Gingerbread install rather than TouchWiz. How much of a delay that UI modification will force on future Android OS updates remains to be seen, and some changes – such as the keyboard – are frankly backward steps. There are also some annoying teething pains, such as the Video Maker app being unable to handle the Galaxy S II’s 1080p footage.
They pale in comparison to the Samsung’s strengths, however. The display belies its WVGA resolution with Super AMOLED Plus technology that manages to be both frugal and visible outdoors, while the dual-core 1.2GHz processor does a similar balancing act with power use and performance. Together they add up to a smartphone with brilliant battery life and the most future-proof hardware we’ve seen to-date. Layer on top of that a great camera, fulsome multimedia support, broad connectivity and a wafer-thin design, and we’re running out of reasons not to buy the Galaxy S II. Samsung has upped not only its game but the benchmark for smartphones in general.

And so we come to the end of our epic Samsung Galaxy S2 review – and we know some of you might have jumped straight here to see what we think.
However, if you're considering purchasing this phone, we recommend you take a look through our review, as there's a lot to cover in the new phone and we wouldn't want you to miss anything now, would we?
But if you're after a one-word summary of the Samsung Galaxy S2: awesome. We've been waiting for a phone to set a benchmark among the dual-core breed, and we've found it in the Samsung Galaxy S2.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Seldom do we rate a phone a full 5/5, but the Galaxy S II is one of the most advanced, well-rounded, and powerful smartphones we've ever tested. Samsung truly delivered on its second-generation Galaxy S. We can't get over how thin the Galaxy S II is, and it's a true joy to be able to browse the web with such smoothness and speed.
There certainly is room for improvement here. Samsung ought to work on making TouchWiz as lean as possible, and it'd be nice to turn it off entirely and revert back to stock Android for maximum speed. We also wonder whose idea it was to have the device make a beep when the battery is fully charged...if you like waking up at 3AM, this won't be a problem for you, but for those of us that like to sleep soundly, it's a big annoyance.

The Plus indicates a transition from the Pentile matrix to a panel technology that has three sub-pixels for each pixel. The Pentile matrix shares eight sub-pixels between four pixels while the new pixel layout in Super AMOLED Plus follows what has been commonly done in LCD panels. This means the same four pixels will have a total of 12 sub-pixels. This should translate to improved color reproduction and a generally sharper-looking images.

Samsung Galaxy S2 internal memory explanation
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
The internal 16 GB is flash memory. 2 GB is partitioned (unviewable) and all your apps is installed there. Out of the balance 14 GB, about 2GB is used by phone system and you have about 12 GB left. When you installed apps with supporting data, example games downloads, dictionary data, news feed, tweeter feeds data etc, all such data goes into the other 12 GB partition

Battery maintenance tips : from forum lowyat SGS thread
1) Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a device is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns.
2) Batteries with fuel gauge should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the pack down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.
3) Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
4) Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing dates. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.
5) If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.
How to calibrate battery ?
1.Run the device down until it turns itself off. 2.Turn it back on and wait for it to turn itself off again. 3.Remove the battery for 10 seconds. 4.Replace the battery, but leave the device off. 5.Charge the device until full and then for another hour. 6.**Root users only** Using a Terminal Emulator, type “su” enter, followed by “rm /data/system/batterystats.bin” ( can also be done more easily through CWM or SGSTools app) 7.Run the device’s battery down until it turns itself off. 8.Turn the device on and charge for at least 8 hours. 9.Unplug the device, turn off, then charge for another hour. 10.Unplug the device, turn on, wait 2 minutes. 11.Turn off again and charge for another hour. 12.Restart and use as normal.
Wakelocks?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Use BetterBatteryStats to check what is keeping your phone Awake and not allowing the phone to enter deep sleep
In the words of the developer:
I wrote BetterBatteryStats because I was missing the great battery history that Spare Parts allowed to call on Froyo: - Process stats with User and System CPU time - Network Usage with bytes sent and received - Wakelock stats (the most important one when it comes to battery drain)
This app is still under development and may contain bugs. If you find one you can keep it, but I’d be happy if you could also report it to me. BetterBatteryStats is calling the “batteryinfo” service of Android to retrieve data already lying there without generating overhead. BetterBatteryStats is focussing and has been tested on Froyo and Gingerbread and the APK is set to run only on those versions only. What are wakelocks and why should you care about them? When it comes to Android the most discussed and commented topic that I know is battery drain / battery life. I’m a quite heavy user because I spend a lot of time on the train every day reading my mails, surfing and listening to music but still my phone is off for a long time during the day and while I accept the battery being drained while I use the phone I care about it draining slowly while “doing nothing”. And here’s the point: my SGS2 drains about 2-10 mAh where it was up at 20-100 mAh before I started cleaning stuff up.

Basically, you just need to replace the map data : see tutorial here :
Tips from user selphy : Ok, for those of you who have trouble installing the Google Maps (for Navigation), i had issues too, but managed to do it through the following:
1. First, make sure your phone is rooted, then download the Google Maps-ownhere.apk (NOT the re-sign one), and transfer to your external SD card. 2. Using Titanium backup on your phone, wipe data and then uninstall both Google Maps and Street View. 3. Then using root explorer on your phone (i used Super Manager, which also has root functions), transfer the Google Maps-ownhere.apk file to your phone's system/app folder (make sure its set to R/W). 4. Then just reset the phone, and voila! Navigation is available!

Deep Sleep?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Deep Sleep runs automatically by the kernel and on battery only. If connected to charger, the kernel won't trigger deep sleep mode (the CPU will throttle down to 200MHz). When activated, the kernel will reduce the CPU frequency like notebook standby and will wake the phone when any services require an update in order to save battery.
Drawback, it introduce the wake up lag to the phone. If your phone instantly wakes up on battery, it means there is an active app running in the foreground (normally apps which requires constant network access) or a nasty app did not suspend or kill by the OS.
App to use to monitor : CPU Spy.

Your backup here is often called a Nandroid backup . All your phone's data, apps, settings, roms, kernel etc is FULLY 100 % backup, Under this ClockworkMod recovery you will also have option to RESTORE 100 % the phone status
Titanium Backup is an APP which requires phone to be rooted. You can use TB to backup all your apps and its associated data. You ONLY can use TB in a working phone . You can restore anything from TB if your phone crashes and cannot be rebooted. TB does not backup your kernel/roms,
Overheating Issues?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
For new users and to be user - the SGS II operating temperatures is higher than most other Androids, simply because it is dual core and its thinness transmit heat easily. Some users like to use the word " hot" - I'd said is warmer than normal. The word hot connotes a feeling of uneasiness and a possible burning effect on your skin, which it will not. Most users I believe will use some sort of casing or backcover - these will reduce the effect
If you have been using single core Androids 1 GHZ models before - you will not experienced the " hotness" as a serious concern, I'd say generally is about 2-3 degree centigrade more. Those who are coming over from say Blackberries and Symbian will feel the difference more obviously
Use an app to monitor battery temperatures - batterylife widget is a good free app. It shows you the temperature and voltage and is quite a well designed widget
These are guides to operating temperatures ( degree centigrade ) basing solely on my usage :
Idle not in use : 26 - 31 Browsing : 32-35 Gaming : 35 - 40 WiFi hotspot : 35 - 45 GPS : 35 -45
With prolong continuous usage over several hours it could hit 50 but I'd think such usage should be minimal unless you are one freaking gamer I read the phone has gone to extreme testing till 70 degree and still performs well

Rooting an Android phone opens its core functions that aren’t available when you buy it. One of the major benefits is the ability to install apps to the SD card, which saves space on the device. Rooting also enables you to install apps that required access to system files, example - backup , screenshots . Commonly use of rooting is to allow installation of alternative roms which is faster and better, more features, and reduced bloatware. Rooting will not remove your 3rd party apps, data/wipe clean your phone. And the chance of bricking the phone during rooting is close to impossible. Just make sure your phone has at least 50% battery charge. Do refer to the specific methods on how to unroot back if needed - easiest is to use SuperOneclick, One root solution or flash back official stock rom
Warranty?

Rooting will void your warranty but you could always unroot it before you send to SME to fix your phone. Some SME might not even mind if your phone is rooted.
How to Root? (ONLY For the Original Galaxy S2 variant (i9100)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Rooting
1. Download Odin and the correct CF-root zip file according to your firmware. To check, go to settings, about phone, scroll to the bottom. Look at kernel version, remember the last 3 letters, so let's say its XXKL1, then download the KL1 CF Root file.
2. Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
3. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
4. Start ODIN
5. Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
6. Put your phone in download mode (To enter download mode, power off the phone, then press the volume down+home+power button at the same time. Once you see the GT-I9100, let go of all 3 buttons. The phone will display "warning" and some text. Press volume up button to continue. Your phone should show an android icon and "downloading" text. This means you are in download mode now.)
7. (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
8. Make sure repartition is NOT checked
9. Click the START button
10. Wait for the phone to reboot
11. Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
It is definitely possible to remove that pesky warning triangle during boot when running a custom kernel, though you should be well aware that this method does NOT reset the custom kernel flash counter. The steps are not complicated, but they aren't easy either, so read well.
1. Make sure you have CF-Root flashed (see the first post). You must have the "CWM Manager" app available.
2. Make sure you have the same version of CF-Root extracted until you have the zImage file. (ZIP --> extract --> TAR --> extract --> zImage).
3. Push the zImage file to /sdcard . It must still be called zImage !
4. Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)
5. Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or boot the device with home and volume-down pressed)
6. Fire up ODIN, and flash the Samsung kernel
7. Boot the device with the stock kernel. CWM Manager will still be available.
8. Start CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage from CF-Root you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
9.You will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running CF-Root with all it's goodies!
10. In the future, if you only use the Flash Kernel option inside CWM Manager instead of ODIN, the triangle will not return, neither will your flash counter increase. But keep in mind, that CWM Manager can only handle a direct "zImage" if you are NOT running a kernel with full busybox support (this is currently needed for flashing kernels out of .TAR and .ZIP files)

First and foremost I am not an expert in such stuffs - this is based on my experience flashing the first Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab and present Galaxy S II. Any experts reading this please do correct me if I am wrong in any way
PIT stands for PARTITION INFORMATION TABLE. The pit file basically tells Odin how to divide the partitions (for formating) and also where certain components ( PDA, PHONE, CSC ) to go when flashing them individually. PIT understanding is very crucial when you wish to flash roms from samfirmware.com , one place I always discourage new users from attempting as it is a trap to bricking a phone if you do not understand what you are doing
Cooked roms take cares of PIT ; you rarely see cooked roms asking you to choose PIT during flash thro Odin. Most cook roms, the developer has built in his rom the PIT instructions
For example, in the samfirmware.com Galaxy S site, you can even see different types of PIT listed and a warning that you choose the right PIT file. In its SGS II site, If you look at samfirmware.com - there is a default PIT file you can download at the top box just above the list of firmwares for different regions. If you download any of these official roms, you will see some roms comes with a PIT file and some does not. You asked a very good question, why is the PIT included if is of no use ? My advise is simply this : If you see a PIT included in your rom, choose it during flashing as most probably the PIT is a changed version from default. You can only use this PIT to flash with the rom that comes with it. You cannot take this PIT and used it to flash another rom - this will brick your phone. When you use a wrong PIT - you have 2 possible scenarios : - failed flash and phone cannot boot - flash OK but the whole internal SD is formatted and cannot be detected at all by phone ( my experience with the Tab)
If the rom downloaded does not supplied a PIT file - than you just flash it without it or you choose the default PIT
As the PIT name implies, using PIT basically repartition /reformat your whole internal SD - once you select PIT, you will see repartition is auto selected. All your data in the internal SD will be wipe clean
You can choose NOT to select the PIT during flashing if you wish to have your internal SD intact. I cannot say whether you will have a successful flash. If is successful it just means your present rom PIT is similar to the rom you have downloaded. If is unsuccessful, just flash it again and select PIT
If the rom file is packaged together as a single tar file ( instead breakdown into separate entities of PDA, Phone, CSC ) , there is no need to use PIT. Just flash the tar file as PDA in Odin
Recovery/Download Mode?

Download mode is used when you need to flash rom through Odin. Recovery mode is used when you wish to do a backup/restore of your phone, flash roms based on zip files, cleaning up your caches , update firmware officially through supplied update zip files etc.

ClockworkMod has much more to it such as :
1. Reboot system now
2. Apply update from sdcard
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache partition
5. Install zip from card
6. Backup and restore
7. Mounts and storage
8. Advanced

What is ROM/Flashing/FAQ about Flashing?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Q: What is a ROM?
A: A ROM contains the operating system and often additional software which can be “installed” to your mobile device. Most ROM’s provided by the chefs (people who create cutomized ROM’s) just contain the operating system and additional applications. Shipping ROM’s (ROM’s provided by the manufacturer or official providers) also contain a Radio ROM and a bootloader. Please notice: A ROM can ONLY be flashed to a device it is made for.
Q: What is a Radio ROM?
A: The Radio ROM contains the drivers for the communication devices of your phone. Some ROM’s need one or more specific Radio ROM’s to work properly. Usually the chef, who created the ROM recommends a Radio ROM. But don’t mind, if your Radio Rom does not match, you can always flash another without needing to flash the ROM containing the Operating System (OS) again.
Q: What means SIM-Unlock?
A: Lots of providers want to bind their customers. So they add a SIM-Lock to their devices with only allows to use SIM-Cards using their networks. If you want to use a SIM-Card from another provider, you need to SIM-unlock your device. This can be done by contacting the phone's provider (paid & sometimes free). This is common for USA based Tecos.
Q: Can I brick my phone by flashing a ROM?
A: YES. But if you follow all instructions, it is quite implausible that your device bricks.
Q: Does flashing affect the warranty of my device?
A: Yes, flashing an unofficial rom will void warranty. But as long as your device can be unrooted and be reflashed again to stock original rom you can than send in for warranty claims.
Q: What can I do, if i gain problems with the ROM i flashed to my device?
A: First of all you should inform the creator by posting in the ROM's thread if the problem is not described yet. Then you should wait for an update/fix or, if the issue is a showstopper for you, try another ROM.
Q: Which is the best/fastest/... ROM?
A: Nobody can answer you this properly. There are nearly daily new ROM's here and everybody has different demands to a ROM. If you want to know, which fits best for you, read the ROM description and try the ROM('s). Only you can decide, which ROM is the best (for you).
Q: What is the difference between a hardreset and a softreset?
A: A softreset reboots your device. A hardreset sets all settings back to the ROM's defaults. All of your data, settings and additionally installed programs will be deleted.
What is IMEI?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI is a number, usually unique, to identify GSM, WCDMA, and iDEN mobile phones, as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad on most phones.
The IMEI number is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used for stopping a stolen phone from accessing the network in that country. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "blacklist" the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless on that network and sometimes other networks too, whether or not the phone's SIM is changed.
How to Backup your IMEI? (IMPORTANT)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Every user of this phone should always backup their IMEI just incase something goes wrong when flashing files, use 'ktool' to backup your IMEI, it can also be used to flash new kernel files.

The JIG just resets your flash counter and remove the yellow triangle during first bootup What does this counter do exactly?
It's very simple: it counts the number of times you flash a custom ROM or kernel on your SGS II, so the guys over at Samsung know of it when you return the phone to them for any kind of problem you may have (this is done so they can say whether you've voided your warranty or not). Even using Odin to get back to stock won't help you and will let the counter go up by one The good news is that the counter can be reset by using one of those jigs we all know very well
No, unfortunately Samsung has very clear in mind what it's doing. It seems there is a second counter, which counts the number of times the custom flash counter has been reset, and the bad news is that its position/folder has not been discovered yet.
Please note that ROMS made for the Original S2 cannot be flashed with the G version of S2 or you will brick your phone. Only ROMS made for the G version can be flashed.

If you install cracked/pirated apps from illegal "ahem" sources or using one of those blackmarket, faked android market apps, etc BEWARE that your phone becomes unstable. Common symptoms said to be due to these are :
- unexplained sudden reboots - auto shutdown - unstable browsing - sudden swing back to homescreen, freeze while in midst of browsing - occasional hangs/freeze while in use
The instability issues is more apparent/commonly occurring if phone is on Android version above Froyo 2.2.2 . Gingerbread is obviously more insecure
No one knows exactly how these cracked apps interact with one another and a combination of certain specific apps could be the cause of these issues. Installing anti virus apps might help but is not a proven solution.

Thanks to Spider on the CheckROM forums :
Most people come into custom roms and dont really understand what the forums are saying to them in the terms of doing things the right way, often things get misinterpreted as i understand but really you don't!!!
This is the case when it comes to custom roms installation, new comers think yeah i'll have a go and go for it without even understanding the basics of custom roms, wrong move, a little research didn't do anybody any harm, and is time well spent when it comes to taking a gamble on bricking your phone.
The main thing I've noticed is that people don't understand what a full wipe is and just go with what they see...
Going into clockwork mode and just selecting wipe. data, wipe delvic cache, wipe cache, is not a proper full wipe, its like wiping your arse with shit still in your bumhole untill you wash it, no no no, this method doesn't remove the old system files, there still there untill you carry out a format of the system partition, if you dont do this and install a rom over it you will have problems with the rom you just installed.
The correct procedure for doing a full wipe is below.
Go to clockwork mode recovery.
Go to mounts and storage and select it.
Go to format / system and select it. Scroll down to format system and select yes.
Go to format / data and select it. Scroll down to format data and select yes.
Go to format / cache and select it. Scroll down to format cache and select yes.
That's it no need to format anything else, just go back and install the rom from sd card.
This is the correct way of doing a full wipe everything is erased and formatted ready for the new rom, no old system files etc....

hi, is anyone facing stock music player in stock rom DXLP9 ICS, when player the music it will auto stop?
i try to reflash to same stock rom again but the result is still the same. anyone facing this problem after upgrade official stock rom ICS???
it seems like the music stop when the phone is in deep sleep but i never rooted nor flash any other rom or kernel, it just all stock.
what i noticed is eventhough the screen is not off, the music will stop but the play button is still there, it just the music is not playing anymore. after i touch to select any function or apps, then the music will continue back but it won't last for 3 seconds...
Now tempted to flash Just updated to Siyah 3.2.7 last night, so fast update
Hehe, someone said they had to erase data to boot and some people got kernel panic in 3.2.8.

It's compatible Only main CWM and screenstate_scaling. If you're using AOSP/AOKP/CM9, then only main CWM.

don't worry lah.. chasing gadgets is like chasing rainbows.. you'll never reach the pot of gold at the end.. s2 is on par with s3 in terms of daily usage.. fast and smooth..
I finally got the official upgrade from S2 Gingerbread to S2 ICS. Have to say I'm a tad disappointed. The lock screen isn't customizable for some god forsaken reason, the data connection keeps dropping, battery life seems a little worse off and the phone seems a little hotter than normal.

audioout_1 can also occur if you were playing/listening to music while the screen is off. as for your multipdp a little google will get you the answer

This is my understanding of these wakes at least, I may be off base but I did a fair amount of research on them myself.

Yep. I was suffering severe wakelocks from multipdp in combination with secril-fd_interface (still no idea what that is exactly). I removed all apps which I knew would use data and still couldn't get rid of the issue. Battery drained completely within 10 hours with minimal display time. I ended up doing a factory reset and installed my apps one at a time while checking repeatedly but it's fine now. No idea what the culprit was but now my battery lasts 32 hours including listening to music a few hours, 2 mail accounts setup pulling every 15 minutes, whatsapp. Can't complain

Hi guys. I just bought an original Samsung Galaxy S2 yesterday. And I've updated it to ICS 4.0.3. Does't seem much of a difference to me except for the task manager and web browsing. Either that, or I have yet to explore ICS completely. Anyway, mind recommending me some useful and fun apps for my phone? And nice games too if you will. I am just too noob as this is my first high-end phone. Thanks in advance!
guys i saw that in the main thunderbolt script, the cfs is not inside the system/init.d folder, is there a reason for this? i read read see that pikachu mention we can try out the cfs scripts, also he did mention the default cfs script, so which one you guys using? the default one?

if you haven't using it already, try NOVA launcher or APEX launcher. More ICS feel

Dump the whole log and upload it here. I'll take a look at it.
Most likely some apps that trigger data in the background that causes multipdp.
Google Talk is not only for Google Talk, it's for other Google Transport items too like Market syncs (I think) or Google Ads.

Get the screenshot or dump for this? Sysctl doesn't have anything to do with CFS. CFS is CFS, but it can display the tunables for CFS which always starts with "sched_*".

The sysctl screenshot/dump.
No, dirty ratio will come out at the very instance you install ThunderBolt!.
After i upgrade to ICS DXLP9, whenever an email arrives in Social Hub, the notification will ring non-stop. How to change it? Google can't seem to help on this matter...

i have not installed the other IM apps yet...
Right now it's maps doing the syncing. Sign out of latitude and freeze maps. GTALK_Aync_con is not only GTALK. It's the whole Google sync to server like ads etc.
Also did you install the GApps after upgraded to ICS? i was also unable to install, but after i install the GAPPS (Google Apps) then can install other things. but u need to do in boot..cant do at desktop.

Noob question. How to log out from maps/latitude? Tried but fail to do so. Thx.

If you didn't sign in, then it won't show. Normally in maps, you will have an option to sign in to latitude. I just freeze maps as I don't use it so it won't wake up my phone.
G users, you guys use the official ICS update for few days already right? still got camera hang, or any hang issues?
I use the official ICS update and my phone wont auto rotate. the 'screen rotation' switch did nothing and each time I try to do Horizontal Calibration the phone went to restart which is very strange.
that's why rooted ics is much better than the real ics..update really fast.you guys think if the problem is from the ics system itself how much time for them to to fix it?since it took sammsung long enough to make ics come to malaysia.so i give a suggestion b4 upgrading to,ics google for problem that occurs when update, dont just update it without any proper information

no camera hang already..
rotation is good.
the only thing is that, media server is running too long ...
example ..when u delete a file using stock file manager, the media scanner is running in the background; unlike in GB, u will see the status in notification bar.
so, after u delete a file, u cant take a picture using stock camera app, because the media scanner is running. and its too long ,

temp solution, disable media scanner
media scanning is normal, it runs in the background, but just the first time will be long only. after that will be fast. non g also like that.
Added on June 5, 2012, 10:12 ami've read through apex and nova paid version. they seem to be a mirror app offering same features.
is there something that in apex has but nova dont have or vice versa?
app description cant tell much about real usage. would appreciate if someone that tried both share their experience.

btw... any idea why is my alarm manager having so high wakelock counts?
SiyahKernel v3.3 Posted on June 4, 2012 Changelog:
removed lots of experimental patches and merges. why? because I got my i9300 today and my i9100 will be used by my wife and I don’t want her to complain too much.

Thanks.. But how can i see if media scanner is running or not?
Anyway to have it shows at notification bar as in GB whenever it is running?
but nova got more settings and customization. it let you choose the notification number. app drawer can let you create folders can add more tabs in drawer. also the gesture, got 2 more gesture which is rotate clockwise and anti clowise.
basically, nova prime, more features then apex. apex lost.
Hi everyone, I've just update my Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100G to Android version 4.0.3 through Samsung Kies update. But my phone RAM dropped from 0.91GB to 687MB? Any solution?
What is the latest way of taking screenshots in ICS G Version? Volume Down + Power doesn't work for me.
Btw, upgraded to ICS on G .. runs perfectly fine without any issues mentioned so far.
been asked so many times, press and hold, wait 1 second like that, not instant. duno about G, but for non g, power+home, and power+volume down, both also work.
Ah yea .. works now .. I know it's been asked many times but with the speed of the pages and threads .. it's not easily accessible .. It's more sensitive now .. that's why wasn't working before. In GB, I can press home first then only press power. Now, got to time it perfectly to execute both at the right time. Can't have a 1 sec apart between both buttons.

so in sense ics make s2 much slower lah?grabing all that ram power..for what?
How did you come to that conclusion? Use it and rely on your own experience, looking at the numbers does not reflect the actual thing.

Everything, for daily use
Everything that you use on GB lor. Its the same, newer OS does not mean need to use different apps. The only apps i change is my launcher. Others is whatever i used on GB.

Alarm Manager just means there are apps that sets alarm to wake up the phone to do stuff like syncs.

i came to that conclusion because people here wrote that ics have problem...one of the problem is camera hang, camera hang cause there no much ram to allocate for that app and other app.

Why my camera no hang? feel left out. And i believe alot of people camera also dun hang. The numbers of people worldwide using SGS2 with ICS is so huge now it would be a major bug with news report everywhere if this is the case.
Normally after you update to new rom, the media scan is longer for ICS and the camera is unresponsive but only on first time. If it happen frequently then its something else probably app related and nothing to do with ICS.
And i dun find the RAM usage to be excessive compared to GB slightly more but SGS2 got more than enough RAM to spare.
most here are on paranoid. seems to be a good rom.
Thanks. Just worried that its not Sammy based, what I'll be missing. Polaris Office for example.... and swiping left/right for message/call. Also not confident can use titanium backup.
Yum, just upgraded to ICS (finally) with Wanamlite. Yeah, I know it's just a deodexed (and lightened) Sammy leaked ICS XWLPF, but hell it's been fast and stable so far with Apex. IMHO a much better transition from VR3 compared if I went AOSP or AOKP.
Modded and loaded it up with all mods I NEED as per my old faithful VillanRom 3.0 (skinned SystemUI, Kavi's mods, more freezing and uninstalling of stuff), and now it's back to being the reliable SGS2 I know and love.
Except it's so much smoother and faster now with hardware acceleration it's not even funny anymore. I even managed to hack the Beats Audio drivers in lol.
Yay to the TouchJizz framework.
Well, stuff's been hell stable so far. So much so that I think going to an S3 JUST for the DAC, HD Screen and Camera might not be worth the money.
At least not yet.

guys...i think my phone kena air few weeks ago (i think becoz i put it under the aircond)...my battery like shut down at around 10%-15% batt and when i put the charger, it shows that it is at 0% charging...
then i bought a new battery thinking that it is the battery is the problem...but the same thing happen with new batt...
then i went to mid valley samsung last week to change the charger port (since they told me so since sudah kena air already)...put on the new battery i bought few days ago and the same thing happen...now worst because it auto-shutdown at around 25%-30% battery and i plug in charger, it shows 0% also...
is it my new battery also jahanam...or is it my phone?
Depends on the bootloader not the OS. But if you had updated your rom to ICS using odin/kies most probably you will have new bootloader and jig will no longer work.

Guys, if I don't reset binary counter actually no effect on my phone right? Just a little mafan when trying to cheat the SC?
It's better to reset before you send to SC as they will definitely check it before they try to repair for phone. Other than that, you don't need to do it.
@Freddy's: Using Siyah 3.3.1 with Wanamlite XWLPF, no issues with CWM here. Undervolting related data corruption? Happened a lot with my old N900.
yeah, i somehow set something in Voltage COntrol and it messes up the bootloader..

LOL! Nice analogy there, alright, will try TriangleAway.
I noticed that Temple Run got update, anyone on AOKP mind updating and test it whether still got the hang issue or not? My internet kinda slow. I saw the changelog on the app said fixed some issues with ICS 4.x Oh BTW just reset binary counter, now 0 already, previously 32.

HA HA HA 32 kah? if the CS personel see that he'll pengsan on the spot.. hahaha
Upgraded to latest ICS and fell into problem of reboot loop, non-stop after 2~3 minutes post boot. Can't stop even turn off Wifi and put the phone in flight mode.
Apparently the issues related to SD card, it work just fine after SD card get removed. Need to diagnose further what is wrong with my SD card (or that is ICS nature???) Anyone experience the same and can give me some clue?
Day to day usage is good, battery life depends on your usage really, but still acceptable la, with fluxi kernel. I'm still on v1.7 although v2.1 is already out.
Lazy flash here and there and restoring.
Conclusion : Fast, smooth, responsive. Really bring out the full potential of this phone.
for G version, ur phone RAM will become 600mb++ only instead of 800mb++. Think twice if you want to upgrade for G version
687MB. Normal usage of RAM is nearly 500MB++. So there is still 168MB to play with. In truth, it is enough already (except you like ongoing apps VERY much).
Ok. Waiting for ICS is finished. Now Samsung should: 1. ICS update (fix, tune and improve) 2. Touchwiz update!! Just like SIII!!! 3. Please don't Jellybean. I know RAM will BOOM with Jellybean. For both G and non-g. With these, SII still can stand for more than 3 years more.

Let's pray...
look back at galaxy S. they got GB update, but no ICS update. That means sgs2 will not get jellybean update also ?
depends on users usage. for non-G users, definitely upgrade to ICS coz got no issue regarding the RAM.
What issue with the RAM? Just because it shows 600/700MB? If the phone is smooth and fast, even if it shows only 300MB, won't you upgrade? As you said, depend on user usage, and for G/non-G, it's definitely a step up in terms of usage.. show me 1000MB also useless if phone occasionally hangs..
edit: also, the total ram can change depends on the ROM/kernel you flashed..

do i need to reset the phone to factory settings after update to ICS? i noticed a lot of bugs and app crashes.
mine is I1900G version.
actually no need, but for me personally, I did a clean wipe, even wiped my internal sdcard, cause too much junk inside..

out of the blue, the clock will stop moving, not the whole system clock, just the status bar clock. it will just freeze at certain time and wont move.
time in other apps are fine though. example the clock hang at 2.15pm in status bar, but the real time is 3pm now, if receive sms, sms time stamp will state 3pm. lock screen clock also 3pm. every clock works fine, just the status bar clock freeze.
need to go settings>time, set the time again only the status bar clock become normal. so far been using for 3 days, happen twice yesterday.

Wow, the "MORE RAM FREE BETTERER!" issue. I thought only the PC world suffers from this shiat.
Truth be known, like madlocke said, RAM IS MEANT TO BE USED. Why? It's faster than flash storage (or the humble HDD in the PC world).
So everything in RAM is FASTERER. If it's not in RAM, than it's prolly cached in flash (or HDD) and moving slower then a snail on a hot day.
Although having ZERO free RAM is an issue, having it USED OPTIMALLY is what you ACTUALLY WANT.
So, having 300 of 1GB RAM free and the rest optimally used is ALWAYS better than having 800 of 1GB RAM free and having everything cached in flash. The former will be smoother and faster.
Of course, having 2GB RAM to begin with IS BETTERER, but we can't have it all, can we now.

You guys don't understand. People do care about the RAM issue. Many people buy the phone because of 1GB RAM (one of the reason). Now they feel cheated with only 687RAM. Also, it is not fair. People will ask: Why non-g only reduced RAM a little? Why GNexus with nearly same chipset can 1GB? This is like a president do not respond some problem and citizens go sabotage. Some people really need the multitasking function. Do you think 150MB++ of space is enough? Sometimes I also feel quite frustrated about this. That 687MB sure will hurt people, in terms of physiology.
In overall, only a clear and official explanation solves this problem. Now Samsung is too quiet towards every problems.

You do know the ram is still there. Its hardware. Its just not reported properly i suppose. If it is affecting you so much then just revert back to GB till samsung fix it.
But i do agree with Eiraku (where did u disappear to). Since i bought my phone till now almost 1 year on GB or ICS or custom or stock rom i had never ever went and check on the RAM. I dun even know how much i get on stock rom or Gb compared to what i have now. Cos the device is running so smooth i dun really care let alone let it bother me.
But still better off you guys make complain to Samsung cos i dun think they read these forums.

Agree with that. Just go towards your feeling and experience. Don't let the RAM bother you. Sometimes I managed to think like this and I am happy with my phone.

If you want to complain, Samsung has a lot of avenues:
Kernel complaints here (as the kernel is the one that limits the RAM): http://opensource.samsung.com/ -> Then click Mobile Phones -> Then click the email icon on the right.

Just call Android to remove RAM manager.
Use CM9. It got no task manager so you will never ever see your ram in normal use.

Reminds me of Windows XP users complaining why Windows 7/Vista use so much RAM blah..always trying to close applications...when they don't understand how it works....

I always explain RAM issue by using this example. But there is one thing different. In PC there still shows maximum RAM space. (Like 4GB =3.85GB). In G version it only shows 687MB. That's all. Nothing else. And it still consume more RAM at startup. This is 2X the PC RAM issue. Can't figure it out already. Don't want to think anymore. :-[

That's because each individual hardware has its own RAM. A phone doesn't have that luxury.
sifusss, i really newbie la, my S2 is my first android phone, cant even get use to it lol, seriously la
In that case, just get a hang of it first. try all the stock stuff. Look around play store. try things you like. Most are free or got free version to try. Just have fun with it. No need to load every apps from the play store.
USB Storage...its like the last time when update to 2.3.6 issue...had to root it in order to get the USB to work, don't tell me its the same thing all over again...I had to reset my phone that time =.=
so how's S3 been treating you? Recommended to buy?
Definately better than S2..just had to wait for dev to start working on custom rom. But actually stock rom on S3 is good edi. Many bloatware not pre-loaded anymore :-) But still cant beat GNote..in my opinion

This is sympton of kiasu people.....as long the phone performs fine, who cares if it got only 500MB. The key is performance, not mindless numbers.

Have you tried this 1.Settings. 2.Click More (under Wireless and network). 3.Then select USB utilities 4.Select Connect storage to PC then. 5.Connect USB cable from phone to PC. 6.Select Turn on USB storage.

er...i don know, just most of sifus use de la, i newbie ba
This is purely my preference:
- for facebooking = Friendcaster - for image viewer = QuickPic (much faster and leaner than default Gallery) - messaging = WhatsApp Messenger - launcher = Apex Launcher (replace touchwiz launcher) - video player = MX Player - file explorer = ES File Explorer (can also backup downloaded apps to sdcard) - youtube replacement = TubeMate (can download youtube videos)
and many many more...

I'm on Wanam v12 LPG with some self modded bits and pieces, making everything dark as I like it + some lite undervolting with SetCPU + further de-bloating with TiBu.
Battery life not as good as GB, but it's not too bad. User experience has improved tenfold though. Viva TouchWiz ICS.
This should help my S2 last another year. I'll just get S4 for JellyBean lol.
Hm... anyone knew of this problem? The S2 music player in the ICS version kinda different as it was in the 2.3 version where you can scroll the music in the list via the alphabet on the side of the screen which in the 2.3 version it's working fine, jumping alphabetically accordingly to the initial name of the song files while in ICS it's like jumping kinda randomly down the list... anyone have this problem or is there any mosic player that anyone can recommend? I tried a few players i search on Google Play but most of the player kinda like to show out Author or some sort of tag of the song file which list it as some unknown symbols (As most of my songs are Japanese)... =S
guys, i need help. i was on litening rom and suddenly this morning my phone froze... after i restart the loading stuck at yellow triangle. i am not even able to go to download mode. anybody can help??

Good?
Laggy. Probs with my contacts. Eats up my memory compared to GB. Hence trying rooting to try to solve this issues (was there in GB but with ICS seems worse!)

Free RAM is wasted RAM in the Linux world. But using too much RAM can lead to lags. Though most of the time, the lags doesn't originate from the lack of RAM, probably due to your phone not optimized. Try rooting then try installing ThunderBolt! (in my sig).

i use GO launcher when i was in GB, i download alot of themes. i only uninstall go launcher but forgot uninstall those go themes.
when i arrive in ICS installed nova and apex. suprisingly i saw some of my GO launcher themes appear in apex theme. nova support themes also? dint see it in nova options.

Somebody looking for a battery case? Skip the ori Sammy Battery Sled/Case and get one from PowerSkin or Ebay. The Sammy one sucks, seriously. I had it and traded it back for 2 2000mah batteries.
Want better power? Try the Momax fatbatt. Yes it's fat. But it lasts about twice the normal 1650mah batts. You can't use cases with it though, except for bumpers.

I realise my newly bought S2 G-version is quite the battery drainer. Played Raging Thunder 2 for like 1hour and it dropped 35% or so. Is it possible for me to buy a higher capacity battery? (>1650mah) That is, if it does not damage my phone in any way.

Original Samsung 2000mAh battery! ~RM80 now, look around at garage sales.
Sent my phone in to SME due to loose homebutton. I dropped by phone approx 3-4 times till got "lekuk2" at the edges T_T .. and my screen is filled with burn ins after 11months of use.
what i did was flash back to KI2 (I9100DXKI2_I9100OLCKH1_I9100DXKI1.zip) taken from samfirmware, reset counter with jig (im on GB bootloaders). I also wiped by sdcard clean by formatting it in the recovery menu before i flashed stock using ODIN PC.
two days later, received back my phone with a new homebutton plus some extra freebies samsung kindly gave to me. From my observation it was :
- a new superamoled panel (NO BURN INs Woots!) - new chasis, no more physical damages and scratches on the body due to previous falls
Sharing this just in case anyone had a defect or wanna send back for warranty. Hope this helps since samsung didnt gave me probs on this. They called me asking bout the customer service satisfaction level and i gave a 1 over 7 which is the best as 7 was rated worst said by them.
dear sifu, i just realise that my S2 din tell me any miss call and sms from outside, i mean no LED notification or whatever, what should i do bout this? do i need to press home then slide then i know whats going on (regularly)?

Is the extra 350mAh worth the RM80? How much longer will it last me, given my frequent usage? A rough estimation will do. I'm just too blur when it comes to techs. Thanks in advance!

You make me wanna send in my phone just before my warranty is up. But cannot find any defect with the phone at the moment.
Sent my phone in to SME due to loose homebutton. I dropped by phone approx 3-4 times till got "lekuk2" at the edges T_T .. and my screen is filled with burn ins after 11months of use.

Is the extra 350mAh worth the RM80? How much longer will it last me, given my frequent usage? A rough estimation will do. I'm just too blur when it comes to techs. Thanks in advance!
It'll definitely last longer, I'm not sure since I don't use that 2000mAh battery. But original is safer IMO, no need to worry as it's original Samsung hardware.
Anyone know how to take screenshot with ICS? I tried Vol down + Power button. but it doesn't seems to work.. I tried the Home + Power button also doesn't work..

Home + Power button for G. Try to hold longer. Vol down + Power for non-G (not sure).

Its funny, my fren manage to update his g version to ics last nite ota but when i did mine this morning only upgrade to something likexxxdkzl3. When i try to update again, it says no update available.
same here... but then i got to see the ICS upgrade today.. but the prob is i tried 2 times OTA.. failed.. =.=""
I tried Hold Home and Power together, its not working. I tried holding just Power longer also not working
need to press both buttons same time, then hold both for a little longer than usual in GB.. timing a little diff for ICS.. I also cannot get it the first few times..

For ICS its different. You have to press 3 buttons. Power + volume down + home button (simultaneously). Hold those 3 down for roughly 2-3 secs and off you go~

i ad posted at the scud thread, i've been using it for 3 days since tuesday and i noticed the battery lasts longer, seriously, been using this battery for 1 year and i know the rate it falls very very well, with custom roms can see the percentage drop 1 by 1 but thats still my opinion la, it did last longer i feel, usually my normal usage will end up at the end of the day with 40~50%, but these 3 days, i been using it heavily, since classes very bored, play games, minimotor, virtua tennis and still the battery can last. maybe this weekend i'll do a simple test with playing music or video in a loop then compare which one lasts longer, stay tuned
