Superlux HD660
Short Impression

After owning both HD681 and HD668B for quite a some time, I’ve been wonder regarding the rest of superlux products such as HD660 and HD330. They look pretty much identical with beyerdynamics headphones especially the HD660 where it looks exactly like the beyerdynamics DT770 pro. The price different is obviously large hence the question pops on whatever it actually performs the same with the DT770? Regardless HD660 has it’s own merits through. For female vocal lovers out there, this would be the best headphone you ever own at RM150 price range.

user posted image
HD660 is a closed design headphone. Allowing you to be isolated from outside noise

Unlike any other superlux headphones that I received so far, this one comes along with a solid, black colored headphone case which is pretty useful for portability purposes during travel. Inside contains the 3.5mm to 6.3mm plug audio adapter and the HD660 itself. Another unique feature for HD660 is that coiled cable are being used on it instead of regular straight cable that you normally get with the HD668B or the HD669. Coiled type cable did give some benefits over the straight ones through. One of them is that it prevents the wire to be clogged up whatever you’re listening to music, etc. However the cable on HD660 is undetachable unlike the ones from HD668B and HD669, meaning that you need to be extra careful on using the HD660 otherwise it would be difficult to fix it up whenever the cable issues comes up. By the time of writing, the HD660 has been burned in no less than 50 hours which personally I think it’s sufficient enough to show the readers out there what HD660 can perform on various genre of music out there.

HD660 uses coiled cable unlike other superlux product which uses detachable straight cable instead.

I start off by listening to “SAKURA” by Monkey Majik. I found out that the vocalist sounds really sweet with this headphone. The sound separation between the vocalist and the musical instrument is clearly noticeable for the most part. Clarity wise, comparing with the superlux HD668B, isn’t that but the differences are pretty small to say the least. The bass is shallow to me taste through, but the sweet mids alone already covers off the lacking that I find throughout the song is playing.

Next would be “Fly Me To The Moon” by Olivia Ong. The mids sound very sweet and forwarded as well, way better then what I experienced earlier with “SAKURA”. The acoustic detail is clearly noticeable especially during the guitar solo performance being played at that time. The soundstage is pretty narrow to me through. The only good explanation for this is because HD660 is actually a closed design headphone. In theory the soundstage it produces would be smaller compared to the likes of semi-open and full opened headphones such as HD668B hence the reason why I’m experiencing this with the HD660. Minor sibilant can be heard from time to time though but that doesn’t actually ruin the great listening moment that I had with the HD660.

My only main concern on HD660 is that among any superlux products I tried so far, this includes HD681, HD688B and the HD699, HD660 produces the least bass which certainly will not entertain you when comes to any bass oriented songs you came across to. This reminds me of the Audio Technica ATH-AD700 which can produce the best mids you can find at it’s price range while at the same time I find that it lacks bass which is needed in some songs I usually listened to.

I did tried two of my headphone amplifier available at that time, the internal amp you found on the the maverick D1 and also darkvoice THA332 tube amp on the HD660. I do find out that with darkvoice it gives an improvement on the bass impact and a hell lot on the mids as well. On another hand however, the ones from maverick D1 give insignificant improvement to the HD660 which through this I can conclude that a more powerful headphone amp is needed to drive the HD660 to it’s real potential.

Overall, I do think that the HD660 is pretty satisfying to listen to especially if you’re an avid vocal jazz listener where the headphone performs best at. I do surprise that such a closed design headphone could produce such a low amount of bass, an opposite on what any other closed design headphone can do such as the beyerdynamic DT770. However this is how HD660 performs right now. I do believe that with a longer burn-in process, the sound signature would change to a degree that it might solve that bass shy problem that the HD660 suffers right now.

P/S : A big thanks to Trio for lending his HD660 for couple of days for this article. Also note that the article has been collecting dust since last year hence the reason why I didn't use the objective 2 headphone amplifier to test it out with the HD660.

I think you should post reviews and also update userlist ...

I would actually appreciate it if you at least inform/ask me first to open the V2. I dont mind anyone becoming the TS since I am too busy anyway.

BUT, I feel that it would be more appropriate for someone that contributed more in the previous fan club and still own and using superlux(not to mention for a long period and multiple model) to be the new TS.

As I said in my previous pm, which you also quoted(apparently you didnt read what you quoted), so I shall repeat myself, I dont mind anyone taking over but it IS ONLY appropriate for someone that contributed more in the previous fan club and still own and using superlux(not to mention for a long period and multiple model) to be the new TS.

You only own a superlux for how long before selling it out? How many models have you tested? Are you even a fan of superlux itself in the first place? What did you contributed other than occasional rare post?

I was being neutral and suggestive for the better in my previous post but apparently you replied with offensive tone. Yes I did not update the front page but I tested every single model out there that is available in Malaysia so I can assist everyone as most people confused with so many models. I never answer anyone that asked anything in fan thread through pm to get their sales but in the thread itself to share with everyone. I even used my own money to buy units to borrow to people to review and test to create awareness to public here without asking for credits or advertising/promoting me(before you say it is for my own sales as I am only one of the many reseller).

What have you done? There is a lot of real fans that also contributed a lot in previous fan thread that should be the next TS other than me.

there is no such thing as you need to use superlux to create a superlux thread, even if i cant give solutions to any of superlux questions, but at least i took the liberty to make a thread when nobody did, you can nag all you want, but what is done is done, nothing you can do bout it

I did not say it is a must. I used the word appropriate twice. If you know you couldnt contribute anything you should have just wait for someone that did and could to create it? But from the timing, it seems that you created almost immediately after mod closed. More like you finally saw a chance to own a thread and quickly open one? Hehe are you happy and satisfied now? Gratz>:D

Being a ts is just a small thing. A fan thread is meant to gather all the users and supporters together and provide a place for ppl to discuss on it. I only said so much because I just solely couldnt stand seeing your bad attitude. Irresponsible and without respect for others. You could have just wrote in good words. I didnt intend nor want to make a ruckus earlier. I only got riled up after seeing your reply that carries a bad tone. It doesnt matter to me who is the TS as long as I can share and provide ppl with good and cheap bang for buck headphones to truly enjoy their music.

No wonder lyn forum got so many disputes. Typical...

Nice review. I have always wanted to know more about HD660. Mike from Headfonia prefers it over HD440.

Im curious about the sweet mids  wub.gif drool.gif

Worth to note that HD440 has unmistakably decent amount of bass. In fact, I might go towards saying the bass is good in mid-to-upper regions. You have to try it someday. Headfonia said its different from conventional Superlux sound sig. But I think it still retains the clear and bright trebles (good quality treble). I think HD660 can use amping with bass boost feature? That could make it shine much better
*
HD660 seriously need amping, bass amount is pretty good, just still lacking in term of comfort (people with big head might have problem)

and btw, i think 660 is quite different sounding from 668B, which i think 660 is more toward mainstream

Not sure. I always thought 681 and 669 will be the one instead since HD660 only sounds great on certain genres only due to it's sound signature it produces sweat.gif

@ertai : yes it has the best mids among all the superlux headphone I tried so far. If only the bass can be a little bit stronger... sweat.gif

I'm standing between these 2 models right now - HD330 & HD660.

Anybody wanna assist me with the "headache" selection? tongue.gif notworthy.gif

As I already know, HD660 - closed-back and HD330 - semi-open, but there's no other review other than the one in HEADFONIA REVIEW sad.gif

Looking at the wrinkles I don't think it is the same as my current stock HD661 pads I believe the material is the same as on my Audiotechnica phones, i dont know what it call tho.. but 100% more comfort then my current HD661 nod.gif biggrin.gif

Trio do let me know once you confirm the price.. smile.gif might order two sets if the price is right nod.gif

HD668B has more BASS & HD660 has sweeter mid, correct me if I'm wrong. tongue.gif

Anyway, take note that HD660 requires an amp. Otherwise, it would be a total waste.

when u choose the HD669 u must be informed that it IS a monitoring headphone biggrin.gif , therefore the bass performance is logically lower if compared to bassy type of headphone sad.gif , u can not unsatisfied with the decision u make... whistling.gif bear in mind u JUST received the cans, do u know every headphone need to burn-in before it reaches its best performance? hmm.gif

hi guys..i received my hd669 just now..but somehow i feel not really satisfied with its sound quality, especially bass..i'v learned that the sound quality can be improved by using headphone amp.it is true? if so, which amp do u recommend? my budget limit rm200
*
Try Cmoy amp with bass boost feature (Ebay), it might squeeze out some bass out of the headphone but I don't think it will be sufficient if you're a basshead. tongue.gif

Starting bulk for akg velour pad first. China pads later on. 130 per pair if 1 person(my previous customers only, rm140 else). The more people, the cheaper it is.

I starting bulk for China velvet pads which can be used for most Superlux models.
Will post pic later. A pair of it will be less than rm60. Any takers?

i don know if this is true if you put 100% sound on your soundcard the sound will not be as good as 10% on sound card and 90% on amp. that is what i notice the different there

I think most of the superlux headphone need an amp to shine. My new bravo tube v2 slightly forward the vocal on my HD668B and tamed the treble harshness. But I still miss the bass punch of the solid state amp.

When i first get my HD681, i would say that i'm quite disappointed with the bass since i think my ear has already get accustomed to my Audio Technica ANC7. So i left my HD681 to burn in with white noise for around 20+ hours i guess, and the SQ does get better but still the bass is not as much as ATH ANC7. Then i try using my HD681 with Hippo box+and guess what? I would say that my HD681 beat the crap out of my ATH ANC7 and almost on par with my friend's ATH M50 and I forgot already when is the last time i'm using my ATH ANC7 hahaha. Like what Aku_Lugua said before Superlux really need an amp to shine. The only complain is that when i use the headphone for a long time my ear tend to get hot and sweaty ^^"

Just curious, try using the same HippoBox+ amp on the ATH-ANC7 and see how if compares to HD681
*
already tried using Hippo+ with ATH ANC7 but then theres no improvement, i think because ATH ANC7 is noise cancelling cans thus amp will not improve the SQ.

AFAIK, I think both (T-muso and Govibe) of them are from Burr Brown PCM270X (T-muso is PCM2704). I paired T-Muso and E6 with my 668B, and it's a lot better now. Lesser sibilant and harsh highs (but it's still bad with certain songs for me), more transparency, instrument separation and better controlled bass.

But one thing is that you need to get your own custom casing for T-muso (a simple Eclipse candy box, but you might have to bent the OScon capacitors if you're ordering the OScon caps, or a card holder with anti-static sponge would do nicely), whereas Govibe has one already. icon_rolleyes.gif

I prefer Tmuso over govibe mini DAC. My friend who auditioned both also prefer Tmuso. About the casing, IINM you can ask from Selvin an already-bent-caps Tmuso, the last time I met him, he had that with him, you can straight away fit it in an eclipse candy box. Still I prefer transparent box, the lights are soooo cooooooolll. biggrin.gif

FOR BRO TRIO: the headphones had safely arrived without single scratch... as efficient as always~ tongue.gif

Among all 4 superlux cans i had own so far, HD440's Bass performance really win the rest of the model without any AMP and DAC used... awesome performance ~ great sound even fresh out of the box~ wakaka altho clarity was not as good as the previous cans i own.. yet sacrificed a lil bit clarity for stronger bass is extremely worth for my personal taste~tongue.gif the ear cushion is softer than most earlier luxes thumbup.gif no severe head clamp problem spotted so far.. Burning In the cans to see its full potential now~ drool.gif

Guys I know some of you have other headphone other than superluxs. So I wonder what will be the best headphone for my next headphone journey? Don't get me wrong... I do love my HD661 for it sound specially with the amp...it just that it is not comfortable for my long listening hours... I tend to get back to my old ATH-SJ3 for it comfort... Anybody out there who have a better choice... bare in mind I am looking from something good and bang for the buck type of thing smile.gif thanks

but the ath m50 is a close type and the hd681 is a open back type right? there should be a different it sound signicture. is the hd681 really at par with the m50? shocking.gif shocking.gif

Audio Technica blush.gif and its ATH-AD300. Might be less bassy, but it's several times more comfy than 'Lux and has a smooth SQ. And that happens to be my next route after testing it in Jaben biggrin.gif

Hmm, FiiO might be a good pairing with Superlux 'phones. But then again, I can't be so sure, as I only own an E6 and it's paired nicely with my neutral 668B. Gives it a nice layer of warm SQ.

Yay, I'm a new joiner ! jsut owned a super HD668B few days ago.

The sound is very good, but there were some insatisfactory regarding comfort and its high. I know there is some modding, but I haven't no idea what to do. It easily make my ear area sweat, and although the treble details are good, but its a bit harsh when it cames to high note.

Any idea to reduce the harshness ?

For me burn in with your favorite songs will have closer representation of your taste. Of course there is no right and wrong techniques because it has yet proven. Some even consoder it to be a placebo. Anyway dont forget to burn in your ears and brain also.

I want to buy my first Superlux headset. It is going to be used to games like Battlefield 3 and a bit League of Legends. It is also going to be used to listen to house musik and maybe a bit dubstep. (that means the headset have to be good at the highest and the lowest frequencies) - but still yoou should have som nice sound when you play games like BF 3. (the headset don't have to have a microphone)
Wich Superlux headset can you recommend?
(you have to be able to buy the headset on this homepage: Thomann.de )

It is normal to be tight so as most of other branded headphones. Just stretchthe headband until it is comfortable for you. Just dont over do it till it is too loose. Best tips is I just left it to clamp on my desktop casing for few hours. That will usually do the job smile.gif

The 669 is seriously uninspiring without an amp(my assumption though).

Very grainy, instrument/vocal separation is a big flat 2D mess when there is too much going on doh.gif

On the plus side, it has good soundstage and is very resolving. Lots of air and details blush.gif

Modding my pair of 669 is in order. I think the thin cheap plastic cups are not dampened.

Hey 669 owners, glad I'm not alone. I just let the packaging box enjoy the 669 all day long (stretched over it). 3rd day now, still tight as hell. A bit bad when youre wearing glasses.

Regarding, sound quality, the only other stuff I have is a hippo pearl. Can't say it's a huge improvement. Maybe not enough power to drive? I tried output from xperia arc and pc. PC is slightly better but not much. Still need close to 90% vol. Those 1080p videos, downmix to stereo....next to no volume, lol. Only mp3 and flac can be used.

Has anyone tested with an amp and which model?

Thanks for sharing.

I think confirmed need amp for it. My iphone can drive it to ear piercing volume... but somehow my gut feeling says that the 669 can offer much more.
My PC can't even drive the 669 properly at 100% volume.

As for the clamping force, I'll be stretching them all day long everyday until I feel like it is comfortable for more than 15mins use.

669 dont require much juice to run it. Maybe you guys try investing in a proper soundcard first in future? I assume you guys using onboard soundchip.

From my experience you dont need to worry too much bout the amp compatibility because superlux so far sync pretty well with most amps we tested them on.

Btw izzit me or nowadays it is pretty hard to get replies over here with actual useful informations and experience sharing? tongue.gif

"For competitive usage however this headphone doesn’t serve well enough comparing to the likes of gaming headphones such as Steelseries Siberia, etc" copied from hitmans66 review (i did pm him abt the same question bt there was no reply)

Judging from his review it is believe that an open can would be better for fps(those that give wider soundstage? correct me if i am wrong~ so 330 it is but i am half on gaming and sometimes i on music while gaming cus i am playing mostly mmorpg n rpg games. In your opinion which whould suit me best? an open can 330 or close 660?

I'm starting to enjoy my 669 more. Instrumental soundtrack and live album works well.

EDM or mainstream stuff is downright horrible on these.

If you guys experienced any discomfort wearing the cans, try bent the metal above your head connecting the two cans. Just bent a lil bit with a slight pressure and wallaa the clamping force is reduced.

Do it at your own risk ya wink.gif

my friend have the 381f and hd661..i tested both,381f with amp is not up to my expectation, especially the voice and soundstage which make me very surprised considered the review in the net, they are lacking for the comfort level as well,if can stretch up abit, seriously i do recommend the soundmagic e10,it is alot better.

but hd661 bass is really nice, but i can only test it without amp last time, sound is a bit strange, like 'double line' and clamp to head like hell, but after trio teach me how to improve the clamping forc it do improve. the bass is nice!

Its been a while since i got my hd661, i must say, the bass certainly improved over time i use it. Another thing is my ears only get sweaty after 3-4 hours, and only when the room is hot...

Anyone tried to change the pads with velour pads ?

Sorry bro sad.gif Festive season...too busy with my real work

I am abbbiiitt disappointed with the packaging for 631 though coz despite priced significantly higher than other models but retained same type of hard paper box with a see thru plastic cutout packaging like 661. But the headphone itsellf looks good and a new type of leatherearpad that feels very soft and comfy.

Omg Superlux finally got something bassy biggrin.gif Get this HD631 instead of some beats yo. Despite bassy, still got decent separation and Superlux's signature sound with high clarity and details. Soundstage a bit narrow to my taste though. However superlux biggest weakest of all time, harshness is not present in this model. rclxm9.gif

Very nice looking headphone with detachable coiled cables. Pics coming sooon!

This picture show the replacement pad installed and the original pad taken out..

From my few minutes test the comfort is better than the original pad... as for SQ I am not sure..for me the SQ is similar to the Original one.. I am satisfied with the purchase since it is around RM14.00 and plus shipping around RM13.00 so all together around RM27.00 thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Guys, I would like to raise the awareness regarding Superlux warranty policy as there are a lot of superlux users questioned me on why some sellers/shops only provide one week while there are other sellers/shops providing one year.

There is only one local distributor in Malaysia for Superlux and their warranty policy across all resellers in Malaysia are 1 to 1 exchange for the duration of one week only. Since I am a direct reseller from them, my warranty policy and pricing will be the same as theirs.

Previously I do provide one year warranty when I taking stocks from oversea distributor but no customers would be willing to pay for the high postage fee for RMA purpose especially when it almost cost half the cost of a brand new unit.

Please take this into consideration and caution when purchasing Superlux products elsewhere that claims to provide one year warranty.

I saw an HD681 being sold at my local mall, at KK (wawasan plaza), at RM78. Was thinking if buying it but then the money in my wallet was just enough for it and the parking ticket. laugh.gif So I didn't. tongue.gif
Got a few other models, plus a Samson one as well. Their packaging looks a bit aged too so they have been there for a while. I guess even those cheap China models aren't popular here, eventhough they supposedly sounds good.

Oooh, and on a side note, I saw a few JVC (HDJ-1000 and some others) headphones as well. laugh.gif

Yes I am back. Maybe in a while I'll get as much Superlux as I can and listen to them to see what all the fuss is about. Probably then sell them cheap once I'm done. laugh.gif

Oh hey, the HD681 seems to be heavy when I lifted the package at the store. Is it that heavy?

Play some loseless files like flac. WIll improve your acoustic significantly. For bass, maybe you would wanna try using some setting with the equalizer. If not working maybe some certain amp that would boost the bass need to research research test here and there wan smile.gif

If you like the look of it, perhaps someone want to try it on the similar shaped models in HD660 and HD330 or apply the same idea on other headphone models.

Let me know what you think about it smile.gif

The headband of my HD440 broke a month ago, less than 6 months old.. So I finally decided to do something about it.

I unscrewed and removed the thing that is attached to the headband and used a RM5 felt cloth from Daiso.

I made some measurements and fold it up - thick enough to rest and support my head and squeeze it at the side and along the band.

I'm thinking of removing the faux leather headband cover to reveal the steel band inside. Then wrap the felt thingy around it. I'm just wondering whether it'll be as neat as that. hmm.gif

in your guys experience. which one sounds the best?
the hd631, hd661 and hd669.
i like deep bass and high clarity for the mids and highs
i would also like comfort for long time use
just asking, i know the price range is different.
but why not save money if cheaper is better right?
thanks in advance! smile.gif

I own a hd669....though
For mids....it is clarity ....this can will be quite amusing to me....especially the vocal part....

in this song蒲公英的约定by jay chou.....
The background music sparkles but does.not beyond....and the vocal is crisp and clear....you can even approximate the number of musical instruments played in that song....since the separation is that superb....

Sorry for the bad english since I'm not that good in writing reviews....

i'm considering to buy superlux headphone (for my PC) as a starter to pair with Xonar Essence STX..the usage is 40% gaming,40% movie (mostly action, war), 20% music (mostly rock, Metal).

so is there any superlux headphones that fit these criteria?

-excellent soundstage for fps.
-'action movie' like feel and effect for rts.
-best headphone for rock/metal music or any music with guitar solo hehe.

and also i dont know which series is the latest HD330/HD440/HD660 or HD669/HD681/HD668...or which series to suppose to be better than the other rclxub.gif

i'm not expecting single headphone will fit all these criteria but since superlux cans are pretty cheap..might consider more then one rclxms.gif

thanx in advance.

Then getting HD669 would be a good choice for your needs. If you want cheaper alternative then HD681 would be sufficient

As for soundstage & action movies, I guess open can like HD330 would be better.

I don't own one but they do have great impression from some reviewer.

They're getting the hang of it when styling their headphones. I think they look great! But those would probably look best in a studio or home environment though.

Can anyone suggest me a closed headphone from Superlux? I already have and loving my HD668B but somehow it's just not worth carrying it with me when I am going out. The open styled killed the headphone truely. Otherwise, when I am at home it's the most loveable headphone I have.

Specifics if possible

-Balance between bass and treble
-still have clarity in voice and such.
-size of the headphone itself is around the same or slightly smaller than 668B. Because 668B fits my ears perfectly.

Edit : Price around 150 or slightly less than 668B

Hmm perhaps 661/440/681/669?

669's sound similar to 668b except imho better mids and less bright but less accurate sounding as well due to it.

I've used the HD669 for more than 1 year already. So far so good.

Now waiting try the HD681.

Added on November 12, 2012, 11:44 pmJust received my HD681 and experiencing it now.

Out of the packaging, I broke my 'L' button while pulling out my headphone. sad.gif But consolation, it can be glued back without fuss since it does not affect the sound or comfort.

It's definitely very comfortable, no clamping feeling unlike the HD 669 I own. That one took a while before it relaxed it's 'muscles' on my head.

Sounds is very crisps and bass is nice and pronounced.

Will try to do some comparison with my Superlux HD669 and my favourite Audio Technica ATH-A700.

HD681 full package.

Hi all, I'm new here and have the urge to join audiophile community,

been eyeing on Superlux models HD668b and HD660 for their great reviews and pricing definitely,

I listen to Vocal musics, Classicals and some Coldplay, John Mayer style.

Im still torn between HD668b or HD660.

and I'd like to know if a Fiio E6 is enough to maximize the potential of the headphones :|

IMO I think HD660 would suit you well, vocal sounds great with it. Although HD668B is better on classical on the trade off on vocal music is just dramatic ( recessed mids to give in more treble ) hence I wouldn't recommend the HD668B in your case.

And yes HD660 is somewhat sensitive when comes to amplifier. Sadly FiiO E6 isn't enough to max it up from my experience. However through the mids still sounds good even without proper amplification on the headphones so you should be ok in the end I think.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there any recommended amp within 100 which I can get for at a used price that could power up the headphone? (Used fiio e6 is the cheapest i can find) What about alternative n jazzy and coldplay and john mayer? Which should go with it?

e6 is a great amp for that kind of money. but i think getting a dac is more important than a amp if you going to get superlux because they don really need a lot of power to drive them

Spend those money on DAC instead. Those give you the most benefit atm since amp at that price range doesn't give much difference on superlux

HD660 is really good on mid-range freq hence it should be good on the songs you want to listen to.

Will look into that.

Anyway. Should I invest money on a better headphone or a DAC?

Saw a thread selling hd681 for rm50 only. Any comments on that?

I'm currently inclined to hd660 thou.

T-Muso
ESS Sabre UD100
Hifimediy 24/96 (somebody selling it In Music Player and Audio Related Accessories under the name "Light DAC")
Dacport

No idea how they compare to each other, can try asking people about it.

is all about paring. imo
expensive dac + cheap headphones = useless waste of the dac because the headphone cant bring out the shine of the dac
cheapo dac + expensive headphones = useless waste of the headphone because the dac cant bring out the shine of the headphones

so goes the same to amps

i use champagne bottle cos the base is broader, so more stable. the wood just get from any tree. the beauty is every tree branch is different in shape. so u can potentially derive different designs. of course u need to cut a groove on the branch to keep the headphone in place.

erm, cut a gap on the branch so the headphone can keep in place. bottle is heavy enough, but puttin in pebbles or small stones will provide greater stability.

My opinion, if you're looking for an upgrade, 661 is more of a side grade; unless the practical reasons have much significance to you, like portability.

P/s: Opinion formed from reviews. Didn't have the chance to test a 661.

Hi Superlux fans,

I have a question you guys would love to answer. Which Superlux should I get?

Let me start off by saying I'm not an Audiophile AT ALL. I don't understand speakers or headphones and whatnot but my RM45 AVF just died on me after serving for more than 3-4 years so here am I looking for a decent one to replace it. Besides, who doesn't want a good product with a cheap price? That's when I came to Superlux.

Now my usage are mainly Gaming. My song formats/choices are well, MP3 mostly and genre range from PoP (I know, shit), Rock, Punk, Heavy Metal. Budget? Let's just say I'm ok with 130-180 Range. Almost covering all Superlux right?

So there's the problem. WHICH ONE. So HD668B has tons of review and are highly rated, no doubt I should go for it. And it's cheap too. But what I wanna know is what's the difference between 668B and say, 661? or some other that are more expensive than 668B? Am I getting as much worthiness as if I buy 668B?

So there you have it. Appreciate any help from gurus around here. Thanks!

TL;DR : Which Superlux has the best Price-Performance ratio?

Even shorter : WHICH SUPERLUX WORTH IT?!

I have 2 Superlux.

The HD669 and HD681.

I absolutely love the HD681 because:

Pro:
Light on my head
Comfortable
Sharp and crisp sound
Bass is good
Tough looking plastic
Cheapest Headphone from Superlux
Comes with pouch

Cons:
The crisp sound can be a bit too much
Cord is not detachable but rather fixed. Still 3 ft long so enough.
Cord not braided but not really a problem
Doesn't look as nice on the outside but small problem

I don't really like my HD669 because :

Pro:
Good sound re-production, I would say more balance than HD681
Nice looking
Comes with 2 cords, a short and a long one. this is for either used with desktop or if you want to use with your mobile on the go.
Comes with pouch
More on the bass

Cons:
It has the grip of death, clamping on my head so it is not very comfortable. Needs constant stretching to loosen up the clamp on your head.
Top support following Audio Technica 'wing' design is not well made, so you can feel 2 things touching the top of your head, also a bit irritating as it presses on top of your head.
Cord is not braided

Mainly I can't stand using the HD669 for long due mainly because of the un-comfortableness. Sound wise still very good after more than 1 year of using.

Conclusion:

Best in my opinion is HD681. Cheap, great sound production and comfortable.

I only used the HD681 and HD669 Superlux, so I can recommend based on these 2, get the HD681 mainly because it's comfortable, you can play long hours of gaming and music.

Hey, thanks for the heads up. May I know what kind of music you listen to? Because I hear a lot of different opinions about the 669. But uncomfortable being the main complain for most so I guess it's true then.
People have been recommending 660 for Rock or Metal so I've been eyeing on that as well. I personally doesn't wanna get the 668B anymore I think. I know it's highly rated and all but it's old enough and many latest ones already surpass it. I don't know for sure though because like I said, I'm not an audiophile.

I'm going to buy one for Desktop usage only, not getting one for portable.

Anyone else has recommendation?

Currently my list of what I might get are, but not limited to :
HD330, 440, 660, 661, 669

Mainly to rock but also a lot of jazz, classical, hip-hop the occasional club music.

The main thing about comfort is that it will strike you immediately after you wear the headphones. While music is more subjective and unless you have a lot of headphones to compare to, you will not notice the difference in musicality.

Hey welcome biggrin.gif

Glad you like it smile.gif

You can easily learn bout the burn in thing through google. Basically just to loosen up the drivers. Some ppl burn in by using pink noise white noise, for me, I just use it normally.

I own a HD669 which has similar construct with the HD668B. The 669 is uncomfortably tight but have to stretch it often to loosen it.

I also own a HD681 which is very comfortable. Unlike the 669, it has a headband at the top which comfortably stretch according to your head. And it does not have a clamping feeling.

Among the 2, I prefer the 681 much better although its the cheaper one.

It'a not the same that is for sure. But it doesn't mean HD 681 sounds worse.

The HD669 has a very balance tone I would say. I can't hear anything significantly better than the other.

My Razer Carcharias for instance sounds like the bass is not tight and also over lapping the higher tones. I think the description I always use is muddled. But the HD 669 does not have that problem. Low and high tones are as it is.

The HD681 is however a bright headphone. Bright as in you can hear the guitars and cymbals very crisp. Works well with Counter Strike AK47 also if you do game on PC. But bass is also present like the HD669 except the higher tones is more obvious to the listener.

I listen to all of it from my Asus Xonar DG out of my PC without an external amp. I read somewhere that the HD669 do much better with an amp powering it. My Xonar does come with an internal headphone amp, but I would not think it can be as good as an external amp of branded quality.

Overall in terms of headphones I would rank my HD669 as my last listening preference. As I wear my headphones at least 2-3 hours per sitting and sometimes more, comfort takes a big priority. I can't concentrate on music or gaming or even a movie if my ears and head start to hurt because of the headphones.

Headphones are like that...
The burning process is important like evolving from a baby to a kid

Hd 669...I saw most forumers had it...includes me and I think that it had a tight bass and quite punchy ....

For vocal part...this headphone perform it more studio like .... the vocals are not focused that much and the trebles is not that crisp as hd668 .... the midbass and bass perform quite amusing to me ..... the mids are more recessed mids as well...

I love to pair it with hippo cricri in the past.....
the vocals are more focused and the the whole body of the sound signature had tuned brighter....

Most of these headphones had comfort issue .... including this .... the headbands are quite tight and making my head spinninv after an hour listening to it continuously .... the

Hey superlux fans, guess you can call me one now as well. Just got my 660 not long ago.

So I've been reading a lot of forums and articles about superlux products and it worries me a lil on their lifespan. I'm sure some of you here are long time users so how long did your superlux last before it was totally useless? See, I had some cap ayam AVF brand WITH MIC and lasted me a good 3 years before I start looking for good headphones. And I've read that superlux lasted only a year for some people. Is it that bad in average?

Got mine about two years ago. My HD668B still alive and kicking!

Now using it with bravo v2..... this tube amp had tamed down the harshness of the treble a lot. Though the bass impact was reduced slightly but the sweetness of the midrange really make me enjoy my music collection.

He means it's too sharp/hard for treble? Burn it a good 100 hours and you'll find it smoother. Superlux wants to focus on clarity so it's only normal it feels sharper.

thanks for the warm welcome smile.gif btw, on your siggy u sell fiio amp, does this headphone need to be amplify? already using t-muso usb DAC, its loud, need to turn down to 60%..but ive read somewhere that reducing volume on software actually will lost the detail, -6dB will reduce 1 bit..

An amp can amplify and tone the sound produced , that's why amp is so popular...if used with superlux products

I think most of the superlux headphones especially full size one do need an amp to shine. From my experience if you want them to sing well please consider an amp in your setup.

Agreed. Warmer setup is the best solution to a bright and detail signature of superlux cans. Can you suggest some of them?

comfy....hmm until now i think that hd 661 b will be the best...
whereas is you like something flatter than that... maybe hd669 will be better...as it has better bass respond but not as clarity as hd661...just bias

I own a HD669, not comfortable at all.

My HD681 is much more comfortable (no head clamp of death). But the sound is more sharp compared to HD669.

Wah. Totally contradict comment. lol. My ex HD661 also got clamp of the death issue. Agreed about the sound. Clarity is so good with the HD661, but less bass. Now im turn to bass head. Any model good with bass?

hello to all sifus, I have a question about superlux icon_question.gif . Types of music I listen to are rock n roll and well mostly rock, not metal. I prefer crispy bass and music clarity, but to a point where the bass is not messy. soundstage where it's not to wide and not too small. I am contemplating to get a hd330, hd661, 660 or a 668. unsure which is the best for my type. and also I'll be using mostly in the train with a Fiio e6. what would sifus suggest. can't really make a decision. read good reviews for the 330,661 and 660. 668 some said good some say 330 is better. please help suggest notworthy.gif

See if these helps.
Superlux review(330, 440 & 660) @ Headfonia
Superlux review(661) @ Headfonia

Look for closed-back cans since you're using it as a portable. e.g. 660 & 440.

My conclusion from the 2 reviews is 661 is the more practical choice for portable, having 1m straight cable vs 3m coiled cabled, smaller size and so on. 661 loses in sound however, but is still a very good portable.

Hello guys..after doing some reading about all this audiophile things, i start to understand what AUDIO is..is not like a sound..is an art of listening. So to immerse in this audiophole stuff. i need some suggestion and comment regarding my set up:

would this be a good start up for me..

FLAC format Music > Foobar2000 > On board Realtek® ALC 892 (192kHz/ 24-bit) > Superflux HD668B..

I love the sound of instrument and the clarity of vocal..

You can easily learn bout the burn in thing through google. Basically just to loosen up the drivers. Some ppl burn in by using pink noise white noise, for me, I just use it normally.

I personally find "burn-in/burn-through" a pretty subjective process. After a while I just get used to the sound signature of my cans.

Rock I will suggest closed type which is 660 or 440. Especially on train you wouldn't want others to hear you. But those cans are never meant to be portable. So 661, good choice. I myself using a 660, listening mostly to metal. Planning to get T-Muso and then Fiio E6.

I now have a fiio e7 but to make the dac work android is not very supportive.(currently just amp). getting those 661's by mid of march. currently using sennheiser hd238, the sound is good but the noise leakage and isolation is horrible. on the + side is just portability. I've tested those hd 668b they are really good. why don't people actually own this kinds of good stuff?, instead of those crappy beats.

Hello all!

I'm no audiophile but I do appreciate decent quality at a low price. So having gone through my fair share of cheap cans (the type you find hanging off the racks in LowYat), I bought the Superlux HD668B.

What a revelation! Who knew a sub RM150 pair of cans can sound this good and be so comfortable to wear? You get a drawstring bag for storage, screw-on adapter and an extra length of cable. I keep this gem in the office, which I use to listen with during work every day.

A colleague owns a Grado SR80 and I laugh at the kind of money he paid to get it.

Recently my other cheap-ass Sonic Gear headphones that I use with my MP3 laptop died, so I got another excuse to buy a replacement cheap headphones. I found the HD651 for under RM60.. and Superlux blew me away, YET AGAIN.

Usually you can only get garbage for that kind of money, but not with Superlux. Lightweight, but tight with hi-quality sound and water-tight noise leakage and isolation... plus very decently built for the asking price. It towers high over all the rest of the stuff being peddled for this kind of money. And Superlux still manages to throw in a drawstring storage bag, even at this ridiculously low price!

I want to find another pair of closed-back headphones... and I'm not going to bother looking at any other brand.

660 closed, means smaller soundstage. 330 semi-open, caters for more songs more of an all rounder.

Closed means people outside can't hear what you playing, better in quieter places, you also wont be able to hear anything if needed.

Semi-open/Open people can hear you if the room's quiet enough or you played too loudly, and you can prolly hear what other's are saying as well.

Better or not than the 668B is very subjective. At least consider these factors, what genre you listen to? what environment? Portable or not? Any need of the 3m extension and removable cable?

I have a 660, tested 668b as well. They serve different genre really. 668B is a good overall and the safest way to invest into Superlux. I opted for 660 because I wanted a closed type because I listen to metal, heavy metal, trash metal. 668B was said to have clearer vocals. 660 will not give you the omph omph sound from raze or dubstep or whatever pop songs have now. But drums and bases are actually clear, tight, not as punchy.

After having listened to it for 2 months now, I find 660 very fun to listen to. I do play around with equalizer a little to have better bass. I'm planning to buy Fiio E6 combine with a T-Muso DAC and see how thing will turn out. I'm sure an amp will drive these cans better and make up for whatever they are "weak" at.

There you have it. Do note though, I'm not at all anywhere near audiophile, so you might not wanna take all of what I said as true. You'll have to listen, get used to it a.k.a burn-in, then fell in love. I just started and not really good at telling how each cans' high mid and lows are better or something more pro-like stuff. But to me, and my friend that has the 668b, we both like my 660 better.

P/S: E6 is the best bang for the buck for that price. Rule of thumb, buy amps about 75% monetary value your cans will be enough. Happy choosing!

Haha lets not talk bout comparison in such general terms and start a flame war over this like wat happened long ago superlux vs all brands.

Every brand and model have their own pros and cons depending on your preference. 669 still gives me the pleasure and surprise listening to it now despite my main headphone is a dt770.

true, the 668b is really nice for that price, tho the bass is a sort of "out of tune". cool2.gif

The Superlux HD681 EVO already for sale in US and pictures of it already appearing on head-fi.org, are Superlux sellers here gonna bring it in soon?

Actually I'm more interested in the headset version, the HMC 681.

Hi there, i am new to Superlux headphones tho i once heard very good review on their condenser mic. Almost wanted to get the Senheiser PX 100 II or CX 300 but eventually come across some good review of Superlux. After some research i narrowed down to HD HD 668B and HD 669. Can't decided between both.

Normally i listened to rather sentimental, musical, chinese/english pop, jazz etc. The most bassy stuff i go is somewhere like the Initial D sound track. No heavy metal etc for me. So i think mid & treble is more important to me? Sorry me no audiophile so i may be wrong...

Currently i owned re-cabled KCS-75, Senheiser CX 200 II, and Senheiser HD201.

Please help me in making the correct choice, thanks.

Hey guys.
I wonder if you guys are looking for alternative velour pads to replace the stock pleather pad (sweaty issues) cool.gif
I'm now doing a bulk/pre-order for the OEM velour pads to replace the stock pads.
Its for Superlux HD668B, HD669, HD681 and HD662

Share the joy of listening of them cool.gif
Please do check My Thread here yeah. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Either with EQ or with mod.

I think head-fi forums got some mods available to soften the highs.

Mahal la those pads. Seems like not worth it for me to buy a 60 bucks pad for a 90 bucks headphone. Me using HD681.

couldnt find a real fix for it. the pads are expensive because they were meant for more expensive headphones the 668b jsut so happens to have the same fit, and if you think those are expensive you should look at the thread for the previous velour pads which were original and you'll cry tears of blood at how much it cost.

Already reduced cost and its OEM velour pads somemore wor bro. you know some people replace those hd668b with AKG/Beyerdynamics genuine velour pads which cost up to RM150~200 per pair. rclxub.gif

For the harsh high, i just soften it with slight eq tweak. 10khz on -2dB and 14khz on -4dB.
then its goooood cool.gif

Today I did something funny, I just came out of the bath and was drying my hair, so with the towel covering my ears i decided to put on my recabled superlux 668b...and than...it happened...

Everything became more tame but the bass was still there! The harsh highs were now gone and the mids still came out nice, though just a slightly recessed but still enjoyable. I need to find a way to mod it this way it seriously feels about 175% than stock.

Also a lot more comfortable xDDD

recommend for? 330-440-660 are all not meant for portable. 330 is like 660 except it's semi open.
The only portable i see fit now will be 661 and 661 alone tbh.

Do you have a replacement earpads already?

If so you can just slowly pull the earpad off. Just trace the earpad material to the outer rim of the headphone cup. It is just wrap around and not glue or watsoever so no worries on damaging anything.

Although a nice feature to have 3 headphone outputs, not really necessary. Although in my home setup, i wouldn't mind have 3 headphones jacked in at the same time for comparison sake ^^

Amazon US selling for USD 130, possibly RM350 here?

Some people like multiple out because they want to hear different signatures for different songs. Also useful for burning in.

But um, does the different outputs have different volume controls or one master control to rule them all?

Very few people actually try to compare 3 headphones at once, even fewer will burn in 3 headphones at once. Like I said, useful feature only for a specific reason.

Price in Amazon US is actually close to JDS Labs Objective O2 amps which are more well known for it's neutrality.

Me also thinking of replace my HD668B stock earpad with the velourpad. But I'am afraid the velourpad will degrade the sound quality. Anyone have tried them? Care to share your experience here.

Hard decision between the HD681 Series and Meelectronics as both have pro and cons.

Apart from sound quality.
Meelectronics - ONE Full Year Warranty - One to one exchange, give u brand new unit with ur defective unit.
Superlux- One Full Week Warranty - One to one exchange, give u brand new unit with ur defective unit.

Meelectronics comes with casing
Superlux no casing

i have a bit of a problem i hope any of you guys can help me with.

i recently moved house and I lost the original superlux 668b long (3m) cable because at first i thought i didnt need it since the 1m cable is just perfect for me. well, it turns out my new house pc placement is quite far and the 1m cable is not long enough. so i'm asking if anyone would like to sell me their stock superlux 668b 3m cable, please drop me a pm with a reasonable price.

I prefer you head down to Jaben or any audio-centric store to get yourself a 3m cable. It's not going to be that hard to find a perfect replacement. Not that there are folks here who can sell you the cables, but it'd take a long time for a reply.

Just bought myself a Superlux HD381B from the Jalan Pasar shop. I already have the HD 681B. Just had 1 hour of burn in.. So far impressive! thumbup.gif
I tested the HD381 and bought HD381B for obvious reasons.. wink.gif

'Professional in-ear monitoring'
'Deep & tight bass'

I fully agree! nod.gif

Just picked up my HD681 just now from Instraco, they're clearing it off now for RM75 each. Wanted to pick up HD668B but no discount for the other models sad.gif

Plan to get a headphone.. But still dunno which 1 I need to take…
Now I'm using brainwavz r1 iem… v shape sound signatures which have high treble and bass… 1st few week feel very good with the sound.. But now feel that the singing vocal is not clear .. Feel like the singer sing from a far distant, but instrument is very loud.. So now decide to grab a headphone, low bass is ok to me, I need a high or clear treble and clear soundstage...so which superlux model suit my taste ?

but not really portable since its semi-open and sound will leak out or sound will leak in, or you meant as portable = easy to bring from place to place?

HD668B = bring from place to place sit down and listen at home or friend house

HD661 = listening while walking around in shopping mall,LRT, etc.

Recieved my HD681 today, it looks gorgeous and lightweight. the sound quality and bass is awesome. rclxms.gif

the only think annoying is the ear pads are hard but i'm going to buy a pair of velour pads to replace them to enhance the comfort.

superlux price kills while didnt lost the quality. Recommend! icon_rolleyes.gif
