I guess we don't have much choice if you need the extra storage. Both colored model only comes with 16G while the black comes with 64G. Was hoping for Nokia Malaysia to bring in the 64G white N9 but after a while has gave up on them.

yea, my mom bought us a transparent blue and pink cover from thailand (cost her like RM12+) as souvenirs lol
looks kinda cool, but the holes for camera and the LED flash are not done properly -- when snapping pic with flash will see shadow in blue color, kinda creepy lol

The main problem, is the price and the cap. With cloud storage, means we can download/upload files, and with HD support, means we can watch HD content in YouTube/etc, viewing high res photos, recording and uploading HD videos, budden hor... we got this 100MB, 500MB, 1GB, 3GB cap... Which is years ago limit, before HD content, before all this, and the price is still so darn expensive.

and then i said..

It depends on what price you want. If you want to sell fast, drop your price to an attractive level and buyers will come.

Better to integrate Google chat, facebook chat, yahoo chat or msn, not a third party app like Whatsapp which is not free and popularity may decline in future.

Some developers are trying to hack the Whatsapp API and produce a Whatsapp clone for N9. I hope they succeed as lack of Whatsapp is a common complaint now.

If they hack, maybe they can produce it as plugin for integration;

In Maemo, the developers provide plugins for MSN, ICQ, etc. which was not provided by the OS. On the other hands, those who do no want the integrate one, can go for the app instead. So, the good thing here is got 2 choice to suit different users, compare to other OS, only can rely on apps.

If you get a black case you don't have to worry about getting dirty.

N900 running Maemo can be discounted as it is not a mass market product and has been discontinued. It was an experimental product released for geeks like Andy with a buggy and incomplete os.

When it was launch n900 was the best that time no os android not even iOS is as good as n900. Just that till a certain stage there no more updates for it.

If they have continue invest in Maemo I believe by today it pawns all it's even able to run palm os games

I think that's not fair to say, if so, N9 didn't officially get Flash anyway as it's browser supported, If browser, even iOS can get it.
Whether it's not mass market or discontinued, it's still the 1st and if to be like Apple "This changes everything", it bring Flash to mobile platform, it was the testing ground as well, Flash 10 was tested on N900 too, but due to Nokia, it was not released.

Experimental or not, does it really matter? Just like N9, it's also incomplete and dead, but does it matter?
Weird to read this, so the single core matters now? Outdated specs matters now? MeeGo is still incomplete OS, there's still lacking so many things, just like during N900 era. As a person who owns and experience both, I see no difference.
Personally, Maemo is still one of the best around as of today. If you tried browsing with it, the default browser, it still gives the best experience (except there's no multi-touch).

If they actually invest and put effort to work on Maemo, I strongly believe it'll be one of the best around; To achieve simplicity in Maemo, it can be done easily, there's just so many possibilities for Maemo.
For those that never truly experience Maemo, can never understand. Seeing and playing for a short moment is not the same.

It's not about geek or not; So if you use a notebook, you are a geek? That sounds so funny.
Maemo is the closest thing that makes you feel like holding a notebook with the size of a palm. It's not people don't want that, if it's smooth and easy to use, who don't want a the extra capabilities?
People using iPhone, they only say they don't want this or that, because they can't have it. If they can have it, why not? It's a BONUS.

there are a couple of different UI implemented for the radio towards the end of the discussion
http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=3902
the one you shared bundles everything into one massive package, but the other one separates the radio console app with the UI smile.gif
have not got the time to try them, how's the reception? is it good for use without a headphone plugged in?

A headphone is essential for reception. The headphone wire act as an antenna. Reception depends on your location. There are sweet spots and bad spots in my living room. In a good spot it is very clear.

Hi guys, I plan to buy this phone for my dad.
The most important thing is Chinese interface and easy to use.
But I went to a phone shop and try this phone, there is no Chinese language preinstalled.
The seller said can bring it and update in Nokia service center.

Just want to make sure is it the firmware PR1.1 will have Chinese interface rather than only Chines input? Thanks.

Confirmed PR1.1 has Chinese language. Where are you buying it from? Must be pretty old stock as most Nokia shops are selling N9s with PR1.1 preinstalled.

I don't think you can disable the auto lock completely but there is an app called Backlighter which disables the auto lock as long as it is open.

i don't think the filesize itself is 41MP, it's just some computing magic to make it looks like a 41MP image

The sensor itself is 41MP, but for pics you'll be saving in 8MP, 5MP or 3MP depending on your use. It's not any computing magic, you have to understand the tech behind this. A good read over here (PS: Download the whitepaper at the end for more in-depth explanation, it's a very good read thumbup.gif )

The sensor is a 41MP sensor, but for output, it depends on the ratio chosen;
For 16:9, it will make use of the WIDTH of the sensor which result to 34MP
For 4:3, it will make use of the HEIGHT of the sensor which result to 38MP

http://europe.nokia.com/PRODUCT_METADATA_0..._Whitepaper.pdf

Not really sure what size option they have, the default is said to be at 5MP @ 16:9.
But in the video posted by aspire shifu, you can see they enlarge and crop; I think for that particular demo, you will need a larger MP photo.

But for most people who just shoot and upload to facebook, the don't need high megapixel anyway, so there's no need to waste space to capture highest resolution; If there is 38MP, imagine the file size at super fine. I guess that's why they set it default @ 5MP.

Anyway, for the full details, will need more information.

What standard?
If camera, so far, I think there's still none that is better than N8. Others may fare better in terms of usability and features, but quality and detail, it's still N8.
Now they just step more further away, lol.

Yea camera they set a very challenging standard for others to chase like i expected even todate the Nokia N8 is still unbeatable. Now with Pureview 808 the limits is even further.

Depends on how good your lens is. Lenses have a resolution limit, beyond that you get more pixels but no more detail.

Anyone know whether N9 is ipv6 ready?

Added on February 27, 2012, 10:11 pmI'm sure by now people already have Nokia 808,Lumia 900,SGS III,iPhone 5 etc2 in their mind as their next device.
Unlike these majority of people I'll just get N9 observe how things goes with with all the mobile players till end of this year. The thing I'm most looking forward for my next device is continuous software support.Majority of manufacturers can keep up with the hardware spec but flunked hard when it comes to software support.Even flagship devices abandoned after just few months. From what I see it seems like only Pure Google devices,Symbian (surprise2),MeeGo(even bigger surprise) & iOS receiving proper software support. But I have to say iOS software support is by far the best.

iOS definitely, that's the plus of having 1 device and in-house type.
That's why Google Nexus also have similar treatment albeit not as good as iOS.
Symbian I think only for Nokia, for non-Nokia, I'm not sure, but for old Nokia devices, I don't think got anymore updates; but as long as it's stable should be good enough. Only for newer/modern smartphone OS where there's integrated features/services (e.g. Maemo/MeeGo/WP/Android), will be nice to have continuous updates to keep up to date for the latest features, they can actually try to make it easy for 3rd party to add in so that even if they stop supporting/providing updates, 3rd party can provide them (e.g. Maemo Plugins for Social Networks Integration; Not sure can be done for MeeGo, if yes, maybe someone can add plugins for MSN, Yahoo, etc).

PR1.2 not available for me in Germany as well. Using internal sources to get it.

Nokia rolls out the update staggered so that the servers can cope with the usual day 1 traffic.

1.2GB seems right. That should contain OS & application files.Wait 1-2 days & the update should pop up in navifirm.

N9's firmware is locked by region right?Maybe Kelvin's firmware won't be compatible with APAC N9.
N9 don't have global variant firmware like N900.

I've not used Lumia 800 extensively and I've only got the N9 for a week now. But let me just put this disclaimer here, all my opinions do not reflect the company's opinion and stance.

What I like about N9 is the true multi-tasking. It seems way more integrated and fluid in terms of usability. N9 lack in some usability features, like pretty small hit areas for buttons, sometimes if you hover too near the edge, it tends to wanna swipe. Furthermore, I like the integrated feel of the social features unlike competing OSes which tend to work in app silos, if you know what I mean.

Lumia has the leg up on UI fluidity though. Of course, they have to sacrifice the true multi-tasking. Nokia apps are still not truly integrated (what's the deal with some search showing Bing maps and not Nokia's?), but they're getting there. I like how it's backed by a company with a rich history of SW creation (despite what people say). From what I've heard, working together with MS has been great for many of our colleagues.

Anyway, with all the great devices on the high end, competing for relevance, don't forget the fight people like me are doing for the next billion (I sound like marketing).

Majority of mobile OS are app centric.Users seems to prefer it that way.
But personally I prefer the integrated functions in N9 & N900.
I've used N9 & N950 for bunch of times & I think OS is quite fluid. The swiping things needs time to adjust.Sort of calibration.
Aside from commercial app developer support N9 has delivered pretty much everything. If Nokia do keep with software support I think it should keep MeeGo around for some time.

IMHO WP7's UI isn't suitable for everyone. Some users get "lost" with the UI.
Regarding true multitasking there are very few OS having them anyway.Too bad all of them are dying sad.gif
But it's true that using Microsoft expertise in desktop OS Nokia could perhaps gain their place back.Maybe they learn few things from Apple who used their own desktop OS to create their mobile OS.
Integrated services from Microsoft entertainment division is also a plus point for WP.
Users might wait & see whether Nokia can tie their own services & other things like camera in Nokia's WP devices.

If you guys can keep creating things like the X3-02 I think Nokia's future are very bright in feature phone section.

We still have more in store. Stay tuned.

Sometimes I couldn't believe myself how we squeezed so much out of so little. Try the Asha 302 and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, the new Asha phones just announced are indeed amazing. MFE, Whatsapp for feature phones? Something unheard of & unthinkable but now a reality because of Nokia. But of course, most of us here wouldn't even bother with that tongue.gif

Sadly still nothing on my N9. Was hoping to be able to do the update before I go to work. Oh well...

You should use OTA first and flash with NSU or Navifirm as a last resort. OTA will leave all your apps untouched while flashing will set your phone back to factory state.

OTA for fast and keep every in-tact update. Means no need to back-up and restore.
If there is problem, then go for Navifirm or flash with NSU.

So, even with OTA, you might want to consider backup first, just in case.

To honest, PR1.1 is so usable plus meeFolder app, I don't find the desire to reflash my phone even when it's available via NSU, will just wait OTA this time . =D plus the Nokia 808 pureview kinda dwarfed my enthusiasm over PR 1.2 haaha

Nokia Pureview 808 is too much camera for a phone. If you are really serious about photography you would have a DSLR anyway.

It has its purposes, if one looks at it as a good camera that can make calls. And can bring into sports venues that disallow cameras, then can tell the security "This one not camera leh, is phone, must bring in, if got emergency need make call how?' brows.gif tongue.gif
Cameras in current smartphones sucks in taking moving pictures

nah i totally disagree i have a phone and DSLR i know the difference and limitation of both.

You know how much my current total equipment cost ? Can buy like 10 Nokia N9 and its bloody heavy. Now with a fraction of the price i get to capture the moment and do alot amazing thing dont forget go many places tat DSLR cant and for serious events thats where the DSLR comes in handy.

Dont believe me do check my lumia shots.

Aspire, agree with you on the DLSR not going certain places. Yeah, some venues dont allow DLSR cameras to be brought in if no media pass, need to leave outside. Security will check thoroughly, in case got bom, lol

yeah like doing photoshoot especially in malls when u take out DSLR the guards will chase you in circles but with a phone they dont disturb u. They said need permission la this la that la but handphone no need HAHAHA. The tiring part different shot need different lens so end up very tiring haha.

Certain event said no camera but mobile phone most places it can go.

Yeah, I got a 64GB N9.

If anyone is thinking of using a camera phone for sporting events, I think you'll be disappointed. There are certain situations where there is no substitute for a DSLR.

As stated, sometimes no choice, cameras not allowed in without media pass, esp DLSR. Point & Shoot camera can put in pocket, provided security dont do body check. Some places Point & Shoot also not allowed, they check. All this happened before ya including in more 'liberal' countries like Europe.
The most strict I've heard is India, mineral water bottle also cannot bring in, in case got liquid bom.

Wah, KL so strict? Melaka often got groups of photography students walking around in shopping centre with DSLR taking photos. No problem as long as dont disturb other people.

This PR 1.2 supposed update the camera functions, let sifu test out 1st

Ok then, Yahoo! it.

Basically, Flashing is like clean install instead of update, that's why it need the full file and why you loose everything.

Basically if you download from Navifirm or use Nokia Software Updater (NSU), you'll be downloading a big file for the whole OS. Usually it's 1GB++. Flashing by Navifirm as mentioned by Andy is clean install, meaning everything gets wiped out. So u have to restore & download back stuff. I'm not sure of NSU method is exactly the same since I never tried it yet.

Update by OTA is much smaller, 200mb++, and doesn't touch your user files/settings.

So which one you prefer? biggrin.gif

thanks for your and andy explanation. its clear. before this i update PR1.1 used NSU as guide by sifu aspire..i think use NSU is the same like navifirm...NSU also download a big file i think. and all installed apps was lost have to install again. so thats why we called it flash...

Your idle consumption must be high. This bug exists in both PR1.1 and PR1.0 and can be corrected by killing a process in terminal. I think the bug is already fixed in PR1.2.

Woohoo... OTA is available.. Updating the main phone firmware then probably update the twitter and FB app.. the game app.. Probably tomorrow.

By the way, speaking of Pureview 808, I did not expect it will spark the DSLR vs The entire world debate again. Having a good compact cam and having a DSLR is not mutually exclusive. I have a DSLR but I hardly use it anyway because a) it's bulky, feels like going out for an assignment everytime I lug it out, b) when using a dSLR, I became so absorbed of getting the shots that I forgot about enjoying the occasion.

well, i always curse myself for not bringing the slr whenever i need it lol
well, 808 may be good enough to replace the lower end point and shoot cameras considering the sensor itself is already much larger. Plus the pure view magic it may render them obsolete, who knows?

can we haz it on harmattan or future linux based devices?!

The first time you reboot seems to lag because a lot of processes are running. Let it settle and reboot again. Speed will be back to normal.

Guys one word of advise if you had just update to PR1.2

DO NOT USE N9 QUICKTWEAK APP 3.7 which only supports pr1.1

If you run any of the hacks your phone will be corrupted and you can't scroll to the bottom of the screen to run any of your installed apps.

If you had already run the hacks like me, the only way to reverse is re-install PR1.2 via NSU

YOU HAD BEEN WARNED....

Up & running PR1.2!! Update took an hour to download, then took a while to install, maybe 40mins+. Fell asleep waiting for it last night, then woke up saw it's finished & started playing with it. The lag is normal, just let it be for a while as the phone sorts itself out. So left it there & went back to sleep. This morning it's now very well behaved already. thumbup.gif

This is a Linux based os, not Windows. The RAM consumption is normal because Linux loads as many process as possible in memory. For Linux free RAM = wasted RAM.

One very good new feature of Maps. When you touch the icon at the bottom left corner it turns into a compass and the map orientates itself to the direction you are facing. Very useful.

No need to connect to PC. Go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications and press the update icon at the bottom.

For PR1.2 dudes, has anyone tried doing a refresh in Apps Manager to check for new updates after you've updated everything? For me it seems like the refresh can't finish, been waiting for it to finish since 7am. Weird.

[2] Uploading picture cannot select album (previous 2 version it was ok)
[3] timeline lags in android

And Skype video chat as well but they have to be created by Nokia. Commercial developers are not very interested in N9. Peregrine seems to have dropped out of the picture.

You're talking about the app right?

Or integrated feature? If integrated feature, no doubt, Android is a failure, too messy and no standard.
Their social network integration is a failure.
Still Maemo & MeeGo wins, WP still lacking although their "Messaging" department can say better in a way where everything is merged into 1 thread (view), but depend how you see it (I think I prefer to split to know which service I'm using).

well, some of the webOS guy went to android camp, i guess they are heading the right direction in terms of UX
metro ui is awesome, but since it is marketed as 'windows', i don't feel like getting one lo, got very sick of windows :/ but they are indeed doing mobile OS the right way, finally

The flat-2D style UX gives me a weird feeling, until I discovered a bug when I first play with the phone... It suddenly become clear to me while the UX gives me the familiar feeling, seems it's web based?

Attached Image

Anyway, right way or not, I think it depends on what type of user you are.
For me, definitely not; When using it, it feels like iOS, full of limitations and restrictions, honestly, I feel really stupid. I took a photo... I can't send to my friend, I can't transfer to the PC without Zune. I feel darn stupid, I can't figure out why and the reason.
It doesn't allow user to add more than 1 mobile number; as a sofware giant that provide database and developments tools, I feel stupid again. It feels like this is not done by microsoft, but some fresh graduate who don't understand database design.
In short, I personally feel it's not a good choice for TRUE smartphone users. What is a smartphone when it's first introduced? I still remember the first Windows Mobile phone MPX100, I attended the MS developer event at Sunway ages ago, it was definitely not the same as current Windows Phone. Current Windows Phone, it feels like someone trying to follow what everything iOS has done just because it's famous without considering what user actually wants.
You can follow the GOOD of iOS, but you don't have to follow the BAD of iOS. In this case, it feels like they blindly follow everything.

The only nice thing I find is the People Hub.... but still,... there's like still a lot of things to be done.
Well, I also like their voice command feature.

Anyway, I passed to one of my colleague. After using for 1 day, he come back to me: I don't know what to write about this phone.... I don't find anything nice, it feels like those old Nokia phones (as in old OS which can't do much). Sad, but true.
Quite a few people also ask me, how the Windows Phone, empty like iOS? And what's special about it? The selling point.
I guess the main selling point is People Hub as of now, but it depends who the users are. For TRUE smartphone users, "usually", they want more; but for those that don't bother about flexibility and just want a simple, smooth smartphone, Windows Phone is a good choice (so does N9, except for the lack of apps/games).

For many people, a reliable phone is still important, and Android fail in this department, you need very high spec hardware with huge amount of ram to have a smoother experience, but it doesn't stop the device from issues like "Force Close" or lag. The "smart" memory management is too smart, auto close for you, sooo darn smart, who ask it to close kill the app I still need? And soo smart, kill your homescreen and restart, kill your call function? So smart. Imagine you need to make a call, and the phone decide to lag and slow to respond.
So, in this case, many user get frustrated, it's not they don't want the flexibility, it's because those OS are failure in prioritizing the important process and provide smoother experience.
This is a phone, no matter what process is running, the phone process should have high priority and user can access it easily and quick; But seems they fail to get this right after so many years.

Only iOS which have quick and easy "Home" button which easily bring you back to the main screen and access the telephone and it's smooth.
Windows Phone also have something similar and it's smooth.
N9 also similar, just that it lacks in app/games and it's consider a COLD phone right now. It's just too bad; In future, seems only 3 OS in the game? iOS, WP and Android. All also not very good.

The concept was good; I only wish they remove the BADs of iOS. Less restriction and limitation, it's just too much.
Tango is said will have external storage support, so something could change or maybe not.

In any case, just hope for the best; No other choice of OS already... Hope Nokia will keep their promise to continue support for MeeGo until 2014, and not 1 year 1 update, lol.

Thanks.
For mine, haven't write; Honestly, I have very little idea or things to write about it unlike N9 (MeeGo), there's so much good things to write and talk about.
The most interesting feature in WP is the People Hub (but not something new for us N9 users), and also the voice commands, you can also use the speech-to-text during messaging or chat.
I haven't really use it extensively yet, but it seems the "chat" part, it's not always ON, it can go offline unlike N9/MeeGo stay connected or auto-online once you're connected to internet.
There was no Skype integration as well, seems they release a 3rd party app in this case and it's currently in beta, not working well and seems like no background service for it.

Anyway, if you want to an interesting read and insights of the People Hub, you can check out Jeffrey's (Upsilon) post in Nokia Malaysia Facebook page (posted by Choon Siang Lai), he did a well write up on it.

Excellent summary of smartphone os, Andy. If one wants a simple os which works smoothly, go for iphone and benefit from the huge number of apps, if one wants power and customization go for Android. MeeGo is a sort of hybrid with the best of both worlds - simple yet optionally powerful with developer mode. As for WP I don't see what segment it occupies unless one wants a simple os but can't afford an iphone.

Apps for MeeGo will keep on improving. It's only 4 months since N9 hit the shelves and it is already quite good. I think most users will be able to find 80%-90% of apps they need now. Give another 4 months and I don't think apps will be a factor any more.

Thanks~
yes, want simple OS but can't afford iPhone; Or don't need those apps/games, but into social networking, the People Hub will be an interesting and nice feature.

Still, MeeGo is still the best, it has social integration, smooth as well, and simple yet powerful and best of all have TRUE multi-tasking. The new PR1.2 really is gives much better experience with the notifications plus the upload feature is the best so far, so many options and ability to post to album and creating albums. PR1.2 incorporates face tagging recognition as well.
For those not really care much about apps, N9 is still the best, it's just lacking WhatsApp as it's like something widely used now (some people will not reply normal SMS, till this extend; or you won't get updates from them cause they only send to WhatsApp contacts.)

Anyway, as for apps; As long as it have the good and popular ones, it's good enough. For me, I installed many apps on the Android, I can say that I hardly touch any of those apps, but you know human, we see we install, but do we really need it? tongue.gif
So, I believe most people also same. As long they bring those important and popular apps/games, it should be enough.

Tried the continous shutter. Not bad, fast and clear, as long as hand dont shake. Can move it around the room also. Considering my photography taking skills is so so,this will compensate. More pro description of course wait for sifu aspire's pics.

If a Whatsapp clone is developed for N9 and if Android 4 successfully ported you won't regret your decision. Both projects are in an advanced stage.

It may have something to do with Ovi store access. Can you log-in and download an app from your phone?

If a Whatsapp clone is developed for N9 and if Android 4 successfully ported you won't regret your decision. Both projects are in an advanced stage.

No problems with downloading apps from store. strange because i go into an app i downloaded previously. I 'launched' it before closing it again. after that the update logo beside it disappears

Added on March 2, 2012, 8:26 amThose using lpsmagic 1.4 should be aware that it screws up your alarm when the phone is on. Your alarm will ring once then stop. The alarm works normally when the phone is OFF.

But one good side effect is that it gets rid of the "Swipe to Answer" when you get a call. It will go straight to the next screen where you can accept or reject the call. I like this so I'm sticking with this version. Just have to remember to OFF my phone if I set an alarm to wake me up.

Yes no prob. I managed to get GPS lock inside my office room which is one of the most dead zone for mobile signals, not to mention GPS signal. In fact I noticed it locked a little faster yesterday. Will try later again. thumbup.gif

My Bluetooth problem is not fixed yet. I think it might be hardware issue since nobody experiencing the same thing as mine.

Just FYI, After I paired N9 with any bluetooth devices, my N9's bluetooth will not be working the next day. Maybe now is the best time to visit Nokia Care Centre.

May not be the firmware problem as others using the same firmware are not experiencing it. Are you using MfE? Some message problems come from there.

I just noticed on the way to work that the N9 now works with my car. Previously I could only answer calls and make calls by manual dialling. Now the phone book is also accessible thru the car's computer.

It didn't work too on N900 before, causing me to hold on to my N8 for my car.

For those using XMS eBuddy with non working push, there's a solution, but you're not going to like it. You have to remove your Nokia account from N9, reboot, add back Nokia account. Only then will push notification start working again. Of course doing this means if you have contacts synced to Nokia account you'll lose them, hopefully it'll show back up again after adding back Nokia account. For me, it left my contacts in a mess. rclxub.gif

Good to know N9 over Bluetooth works well with car kits now. I love how the N8 worked so well.

It still doesn't explain why others using the same firmware have no such problems. Maybe it is your social accounts or your operator? I would check these first before replacing the firmware.

Did your indoor GPS sensitivity change after upgrading to PR1.2? The 2 links you gave are not GPS issues related to upgrading the OS. They appear to be due to defective hardware.

Or just forget about it as the GPS performance is ok outdoors where it really matters.

For my case, during PR1.0 it works perfect indoor and outdoor (less than 1 min)
After PR1.1, indoor is getting kinda slow and outdoor still can accept (within 3-5mins to get position locked);
Now after PR1.2, indoor deteriorate, and most of the time can't even lock, always looking for GPS; outdoor still can accept; sometime even driving in car in PLUS highway also can't get locked.

GPS Meefo works OK , thats the funny part. DRIVE not working while MAP is working. hmm.gif

P/S: I'm not using any mobile data plan connection; use only FREE WIFI & offline A-GPS only without mobile3G connectivity when using DRIVE for GPS.

Battery performance is better than most Android phones. It should last you at least one day with heavy use. For me I charge every 2 days with moderate use.

It will be great for your mom because the Swipe os is very simple to use and not much can go wrong.

In that case, perhaps Nokia 701 with Symbian belle can suit her. Has Sd card slot for additional memory card and not very expensive,RM1,000 i think now. Lumia is windows phone but I dont like the dependency on Zune so wouldnt recommend it. I agree with the other member that n9 not suit 1st time full touchscreen user.

Nokia's latest business phone with touch and type is E6. But there's a lot complaints that symbian belle update not suit the smaller screen size. Asha is cheap and functional though not as powerful

Why is N9 not suitable for first time touchscreen user? You can master it with 15 sec of instruction. Double tap to unlock, swipe from edge to change screens, swipe down to close app. That all. It's easier than Android or Lumia where you have to learn what buttons to press to unlock, bring up the app screen, the home screen and multitasking screen.

I agree with eaglehelang Lumia not recommended due dependency on Zune unless your mom is also a PC whiz. You also need many actions just to do simple things. I'm sure Andy can tell you more about why Lumia isn't so good for first timers.

Because : our beloved N9 cannot play 720p higher profile, takda Firefox((not the official versionlah) takda whatsapp, etc. The mum will need to learn how to download from tbe community the non ovi store apps.
e As 1st time/meego user,I spent many hours searching and learning how to download, install the stuff. That also small percentage only. A lot of ppl wouldnt have time and patience to do that. Some ppl where is the developer mode, what its used for, they will blur

You don't need developer mode unless you want to meddle with the os. I deleted my developer mode months ago and don't even miss it. Only a small number of apps are not available in ovi store and those are not essential apps. Firefox and Opera mini are already available for N9. As for 720p higher profile that is more for power users than moms.

Ok Kenny, understand ur point. The mum just need to setup emails and social network accounts,if she knows how to, then swipe here, swipe there. Akudia here will have headache to choose which one as bday present, lol
btw, just tested the gps again in basenent parking area where signal is normally weak.works faster than PR1.1. I dont use the Imagic app or most of the community apps if that helps

if simple user i do recommend the lumia over the N9. Even i still have my N9 the social integration of WP7 is seamlessly because if focus on people. Like N9 if i access facebook it only show me my facebook friends if MSN only MSN friends but WP7 it shows everything about that particular person example

U chat with let say Micheal on SMS then later you then Facebook chat with Micheal then after you msn chat with micheal you can continue this entire conversation in a single window or user.

It so integrated i prefer chat on my phone wp7 rather than on computer. Thats my experience

then you can check whats new with that person in twitter, facebook , msn update and etc but Nokia N9 feeds it mix all up.

The fuss might be in Zune its like itunes but after you set up whenever you plug your phone to your computer to your phone it will sync all your photos and music. Trouble everything must use Zune.

Nokia 808 thread? He must be thinking another phone.

Anyway, for those who experience inability to get updates after PR1.2 (indicator never stop turning) the problem has been traced to Filemanager - the one which was dropped from ovi store. Uninstall filemanager to cure it.

FYI, facebook and twitter notification is based on the refresh cycle you set up. So if you set up to refresh then you will get notification every 30 minutes so on and so forth. It's not push notification just to clear things up.

I think it's under Settings, Notifications, Feed on home screen, Automatic updates. Here you can set timing of refresh. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Doesn't work well for me. Switch the speaker on and off unpredictably even when I'm holding the phone to my face. Unless I hold the phone very still which is impossible. Wasted my money on it.

My indoor A-GPS performance is back to normal now. It was probably due to a missing location-settings.conf file; PR1.2 has nothing to do with it. Those who want more info can get it here:

My indoor A-GPS performance is back to normal now. It was probably due to a missing location-settings.conf file; PR1.2 has nothing to do with it. Those who want more info can get it here:

Does the update indicator keep spinning endlessly or you are being told your device is up to date? There is a cure for the first one.

Can you provide your N9 product code? Can help u check in Navifirm. The product code can be found either under the micro sim tray or u go into About there & scan the QR code to get it. It's after your phone IMEI.

Yeah, if u do a ping to the servers, u'll see the google one is taking longer to respond though it's more consistent. Nokia one responds faster but might not respond sometimes.

Yeah, hard to find nice casings here, my place even worse. So I looked for it in eBay & found some nice ones selling in HK & UK. Price around RM20+ with shipping.

Still working on that, its the temp file copy. Try restart the phone to c the problem persist or not. I guess PR1.3 will fix this issue. nod.gif
