Can you paste down the error code/messages that you get? Might prompt more ways for looking into this.

3TB internal of course. Its better to keep it safe in a PC , be sure to have proper ventilation for the hard disk. Keeping it cool is important

It has no impact. Hard disk speeds cant even reach SATA 1 yet. Probably if you connect to SATA 3 , you'll get burst speeds (aka if the data is found in buffer) , even that would be for few seconds.

if ur laptop waranty has expired, maybe u can pull out ur HD, then try to attach it to any pc (provided it has SATA connection). see if the pc detect ur HD. if it does, then u have to check ur BIOS setting. if it doesnt, ur HD might be corrupted.

u might wanna try to check it using "Techiez Toolkit". u can still recover some of ur files. if HDD cant be detect even by using "Techiez Toolkit", then YES, ur HDD is corrupted.

There are some HDDs that can be bottlenecked by SATA 1.5Gbps, especially now that we have 1TB platters. As for SATA 6.0Gbps burst speeds and a 64MB cache, the burst will only last 0.1 seconds. 0.05 seconds for a 32MB cache.

You may RMA. If you do, please be sure to backup your data. There is a very good chance that WD will simply give you a new empty HDD without copying your data over.

You also have the option of to not RMA at this time. Frankly speaking, while it looks troubling, the data shown in the screenshot are actually not yet fatal. Your HDD may still live on for a few more years without any problems.

I am more worried about if the numbers are growing worse. If it is, you might have a bad cap ayam PSU that is sending damaging electrical spikes that is slowly destroying your HDD, and any replacement HDDs will also get damaged by the same PSU. What is the model of your PSU and how old is it? Is your hardware demanding more wattage than your PSU can provide? If you do not know, please use a PSU calculator that is available online.

The HDD manufacturers do not want to reduce the prices, so it will be a long and slow slide down to something more palatable. From what I read from the posts in this topic, it looks like the prices are slowly dropping by about RM10 per week.

Only the burst rate seems way off, is it due to the RST driver?

Yeah the Seagate 3TB (RM499 - viewnet, jayacom) is better than WD 3TB Green (RM480 - jayacom).

Performance? Seagate Barracuda

The fastest 3.5” high-capacity desktop hard drive in this round-up is Seagate’s new 3 TB Barracuda (ST3000DM001). It offers almost 200 MB/s sequential read performance, similar write speeds, and it runs relatively coolly thanks to its three-platter design.

However, Seagate didn't design this Barracuda for 24/7 operation. If you need higher availability, you'll want to check out Seagate’s Barracuda XT or Hitachi's Deskstar 7K3000. Both are five-platter designs, robust, and still fast enough for video editing or video surveillance servers. Three terabyte hard drives are probably the best compromise between capacity and cost, as 2 TB disks might not always be big enough and 4 TB models are still very expensive.
Another review:

QUOTE
Prices for hard drives are most definitely on the increase these days due to shortages, and that issue is expected to continue (though it may abate somewhat) through 2012. Costs for HDDs are also not especially consistent from vendor to vendor at the moment. However, we did find the Barracuda 3TB for $229 in multiple places, which is frankly a good deal right now for the performance and capacity the drive offers.

Another factor to consider when making a purchasing decision, especially with a device like a mechanical hard drive that could eventually fail, is the warranty. Seagate used to offer a lengthy 5-year warranty, but this Barracuda 3TB has just a 2-year warranty. (The Hitachi Deskstar 3TB we put up against it has a 3-year warranty.)

The bottom line, though, is that other than the 3TB Hitachi Deskstars, there just isn’t much competition for the Barracuda 3TB. For the features and performance you get with this drive at the current price, it just might be your best bet for a 3TB monster.

@cannavaro yup, Seagate 3TB, is the 3TB versio of HD103SJ biggrin.gif

still, it is one year warranty, I reckon, it doesn't matter much, 1 year later, 3TB may cost RM300 or so, soon?

one thing, the price between 1TB, 2TB and 3TB is way off
1TB - 269
2TB - 349
3TB - 499

Guys, I'm looking for 3.5" external hard disk for my laptop.

All I want is a simple drag and drop hard disk, fast transfer rate, durable for 24/7, not for portable.

-1TB
-Price below RM350

You can use HWMonitor. Not only it will show you the hdd temperature, but also your cpu and gpu
core temperature.
