I have an external 3.5" 2TB HDD USB 3.0 (WD My Book Essentials). Is it possible to convert it into a desktop HDD? How much would the casing be and all? Thanks!

QUOTE(dkk @ Jun 1 2012, 08:49 AM) Desktop hard disks don't need casing. They install inside the computer casing. You may already have the power cable. All desktops have. It's just a question of whether you have an available (unused) one. You'll probably need a SATA cable. Some desktops have extra ones as well. Open up your computer casing and check. Ahh I see. So what's the speed gonna be like? 5400rpm or 7200rpm? Thinking of building a desktop rig and saving up a little bit on the HDD since I got a huge 2TB Mine is this: ![]() Inside looks like this ah? ![]() This post has been edited by -kytz-: Jun 1 2012, 06:37 PM |

QUOTE(dma0991 @ Jun 4 2012, 01:22 AM) You get more storage and some speed that SSD offers. You won't get the best of both worlds, it won't have the capacity of a HDD and won't be as fast as a SSD. Personally I don't think it is worth it. Thanks |

Is there such thing as a dual HDD drive? I might want to place a fast HDD as my main and another slower external(which I will convert it) as my secondary drive?Sorry for the noob question

And now it's acting up again. Could it be because I don't really "eject/remove HDD" ?

QUOTE(lex @ Jun 26 2012, 04:14 PM) Please describe in detail. Is it the surrounding HDD mounting and/or casing vibrating? Or just the HDD itself making a lot of noise? HDD including the HDD cage, the empty floor of the casing between the HDD cage and the PSU Is this normal? p/s: I did remove off the fan, but it's still vibrating ![]() This post has been edited by -kytz-: Jun 26 2012, 06:53 PM |

QUOTE(lex @ Jun 26 2012, 08:05 PM) You could try putting a heavy weight on it (e.g. a thick heavy book, stone brick, etc), and see if the vibration is still there. Is that PSU touching the bottom plate of that casing? Thanks Lex. I'll try that. Btw, HDD vibrating is normal right? I'm just wondering whether my HDD is normal or not. Vibrating until hdd cage and casing floor also vibrate. My table can feel the vibrations and its slightly annoying Btw, my HDD is screwed on to the hdd cage by 2 screws on the left side of the cage. Right side (facing the front fan) there's nothing This post has been edited by -kytz-: Jun 28 2012, 03:07 AM |

QUOTE(lex @ Jun 28 2012, 04:02 AM) Vibrations are not good for the HDD generally. I'm pretty scared now. What if my HDD is dying? There should be another 1 or 2 screws on the other side as well, to properly secure the HDD. Try putting some padding on the unsecured side (e.g. a strip of thick cardboard between the HDD and the HDD cage). Is that HDD cage removeable? Btw, is it safe to place a deck of cards underneath or on top the HDD? Update: I placed 2 deck of cards on top of the hdd which fit in tightly which is good. Managed to absorb some of the vibrations. Casing floor has a lot less vibrations and my table has less of it too I'll be monitoring my HDD temperatures to see is there any change in idle/load temperatures This post has been edited by -kytz-: Jun 28 2012, 05:52 AM |

QUOTE(wildwestgoh @ Jun 28 2012, 07:18 AM) Preferable not to put anything above the HDD cause HDD does has "breathing holes" to intake and exhaust air to maintain pressure inside. Thanks. I'll see what I can do.Your HDD vibration is very normal, spinning at 7,200rpm is very fast, if you try your car engine at that speed and you should know why. You can put two soft padding on both side of the HDD before screw it to the cage, from the looks the HDD cage should be removable. that should help absorb some vibration directly from the HDD to your chassis, and as I stated before, replace the chassis "leg" with a better one or just put some more padding in between. Extra note: If you can, try to screw on both side (with extra padding). Btw guys, I've had my HDD being unresponsive when transfering files between my HDD and my external HDD on 2 occasions. It was totally unresponsive and I tried to use task manager to end task it but to no avail. The latest one (right now) made my entire screen blank except the opened programmes. So I restarted my computer and it took me like 30 minutes+ to reboot because it was stuck at the shutting down page where it says "logging off". Now, I'm still stuck at the same page. It's almost 30 minutes now and probably might take an hour. (transfering file not responding again, so attempted to force reboot) Just wondering whether this is a sign of HDD damage or anything? I did download a HDD health software or smth and it stated my HDD is 98% healthy A bit scared now to be honest. Slowdowns like this never happened before |

QUOTE(BenSow @ Dec 11 2012, 03:22 PM) QUOTE My son's school data was on the water soaked hard drive, so I put it in the oven and baked it at 60 Celsius for 4 hours. That did the trick, the hard drive works perfect... I backed up all the data, just to be sure. Try to explain to the teacher that you couldn't get your report done because your PC caught on fire. Something like, "teacher, the dog ate my homework..." Sos: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/26/ex..._vs_reg_reader/ QUOTE I set the toaster oven on about 150 degrees, or so — probably a normal running temp for a lot of devices — and let it warm up. Then I took the drive and laid it on the rack with the top down and electronics up. (I didn't want to cook the circuit board from the bottom element!) Then I stood by and opened the oven door every 30 seconds or so, and felt the drive with my hand to make sure it wasn't getting too hot. I know what a running drive feels like, so I figured I should be able to get it to the right temp without burning the casserole, if you know what I mean. After a few minutes, I determined that it felt just like a warm, running drive. So I pulled it from the oven, took it to the computer, and let it sit for a couple of minutes to equalize. I knew at that point that, while the outside was crisp, the inside was still warm and gooey. After equalization of the heat, I plugged it in, powered up, and it ran PERFECTLY! I was able to use Helix to image the entire 250GB drive over to a new 500GB drive without a single error! http://computer-forensics.sans.org/blog/20...-a-little-faith Even baking a dead graphics card: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1253787/all This post has been edited by -kytz-: Dec 11 2012, 04:32 PM |

So, I'm looking at getting a new HDD for storing pictures only. So it has got to be reliable. If paying extra for the Black version for better reliability/endurance, I might seriously consider it. I just don't want something that goes wrong in the future. I own a WD Blue 1TB and a WD Green 2TB and both are working fine.
Currently looking at the WD Blue 1TB at RM174, WD Black 1TB at RM254 or the Seagate SSHD 1TB at RM279. Also, would a SSHD be useful for storing pictures or just pointless? Talking about it as a cache drive for storage purposes. |
