Heros Never Die

Many people don't realize this. I was studying the effects of temperature on hard disk. Many people seem to worry about cooling down their processors and graphics card but not hard disks. QUOTE , increasing HDD temperature by 5C has the same effect on reliability as switching from 10% to 100% HDD workload. Each one-degree drop of HDD temperature is equivalent to a 10% increase of HDD service life. Hard disks should be cooled and their ideal temperature should be around anywhere from 35C to 38C (at most it should be 40C). Now anything above that is dangerous. Hard disks max temperature are generally 50C. You don't want to go anywhere above 42C , its just simply asking for trouble. Its very important to cool down your hard disk. Take a look at temperature Oh yeah you may want to read this article , the author explains it very well http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/12/h...-be-afraid.htmlThis post has been edited by prasys: May 5 2012, 09:54 PM

QUOTE(sI Taufu @ May 5 2012, 10:48 PM) HAF 912 Advanced user reporting in; My hdd also maintain at those temperature, abut 42~45C, both hdd is WD black. Added on May 5, 2012, 10:52 pmUsed hdd....... Although captain obvious, i also want to advice that: better dun buy used hdd, one will never know what had done on it by previous user. Take a look at whats the maximum temperature for WD black. 45C is dangerous , you are stressing the hard disk too much

QUOTE(sI Taufu @ May 5 2012, 11:06 PM) This is strange...... My OS hdd hit about 42 C, while my backup hdd hit 45C Depends how the hard disks are placed , if they are on top of each other , probably thats the reason and that is common as well , my OS disk will be slightly cooler compared to my idle disk

QUOTE(Hornet @ May 6 2012, 12:06 AM) In Windows 7, I look for this setting, and found in Power section (Balance), under Advance setting, there's one -Turn off hard disk after: --Setting: 20 minutes Is this the one? Thanks That may not help , you may have to tweak with Hard Disk APM settings on how to slow it down. If its a data disk , probably you want to slow it down or tweak its settings. I forgot the name of the software

QUOTE(Boldnut @ May 6 2012, 07:32 AM) its a good choice but not wise if u on off too frequent. I usually have a 2hours setting to turn off the entire PC, instead of just HDD only. 20mins is kinda too much, unless u know that once u leave for 20mins u wont come back for at least 2hours. adding a case fan directly blow on it probably do much better result. Took out my old LGA775 heatsink and placed on top of the hard disk and it did help to reduce the temperature by 1-2C . 1-2C means a lot for hard disk !

QUOTE(life09 @ May 6 2012, 03:55 PM) what software?sorry im a bit noob when it comes to thse things..i didnt use any software..at my computer(my hd)i right click it and click"set password"..i think bitlock if im not mistaken Added on May 6, 2012, 4:05 pmhere's some details: 1)Using Windows 7. 2)WD passport. 3)Using my laptop(compaq cq40)while doing these password setup. 4)Laptop turned off when its encrypting(28%) Sadly its gone , probably its partially corrupted. Its not a good idea for you to encrypt something while on battery source.

QUOTE(life09 @ May 6 2012, 09:18 PM) gone?!?!not that i want to encrypt..its a must procedure bfore i can setup my password.. If you setup a password , its encrypting the data. Simple , now while its doing that , you decided to interrupt. It couldn't complete , now your drive can't be said encrypted nor fully decrypted. It has resulted in an unstable state

QUOTE(life09 @ May 6 2012, 11:17 PM) yeah i know my fault..not that i want to interrupt..i went down for awhile for some work thinking just a while, just realised that my battery can last only 30mins,as i was going back to my room to plug in AC it turned off>_<...so no hope? ..is there a way if i go to any pc work shop and get it repaired? Not sure , you sure you have used BitLocker and not other things The problem now is that even if we can recover the data probably its gibberish. However there are few recovery softwares you could try , you may able to recover data which are not encrypted yet. I am not sure of the chances because I have not attempted to recover files from an encrypted hard disk Anyway the lesson is don't encrypt your hard disks , if you want to protect your files and stuff , consider encrypting the folder or just the files alone. Its way safer compared to doing this way

QUOTE(life09 @ May 6 2012, 11:28 PM) yeah bitlocker..gibberish?meaning that my files are messed up?i dont mind as long i can access my hard disk..someone recommend to try this seagate recover thingy..this https://services.seagate.com/diysoftware.aspx but i dont know wether its working or not..its scaning.Like i said, its a must procedure to encrypt if i want to set up a password, not that i want to encrypt it.So what do you recommend me to do now?Damn theres tons of stuff inside my hd Gibberish in sense the file does not make sense , its lost its identity. Its encrypted. You can't understand. Try with that recovery software and wait , if the disk is large it will take time. Just leave it overnight and pray it recovers something. Always remember , when you want to protect or use bitlocker. Do a bit of research what it does and do not attempt such tasks on battery power.

QUOTE(hengguowei @ May 19 2012, 03:04 PM) Wondering if it's better to get 3TB external or 3TB internal? It's for keeping photos and stuffs. Purely storage purpose. Thanks. 3TB internal of course. Its better to keep it safe in a PC , be sure to have proper ventilation for the hard disk. Keeping it cool is important QUOTE(kimonorish @ May 19 2012, 04:49 PM) with one should i connect the sata cable for seagate baracuda 1tb , sata 1 or 3? It has no impact. Hard disk speeds cant even reach SATA 1 yet. Probably if you connect to SATA 3 , you'll get burst speeds (aka if the data is found in buffer) , even that would be for few seconds.
