I just realized something after staring at the pricelist. laugh.gif
The price of buying a 3TB Seagate drive is comparable to the price of buying 1TB x 3 during the pre-Thai Flood days.

1TB Samsung (HD103SJ) = RM169 (pre flood price, lowest was RM168 IIRC, but it was mostly RM169)

RM169 x 3 = RM507

3TB Seagate = RM539 (current price)
RM32 difference.

Not too bad isn't it?
To make it even sweeter, if you have a Maybank2Card AMEX, swipe during the weekend at Viewnet to get a 5% cashback. (If you haven't reached the RM50 cashback cap that is)
5% off RM539 = RM26.95

After cashback, the 3TB becomes RM512.05 rclxms.gif

The above is exactly what I'm gonna do. I specifically mentioned Viewnet since they don't charge anything extra for CC usage and they're one of the few shops that accept AMEX.

the price comparable if u take 1Tb x 3 unit ( before thai flood price)= 1 3Tb x unit (current market price)...to be fair the price quite high if compare to before thai flood price 2Tb which is RM 250 for samsung drive
*
I don't recall the Samsung 2TB drive being RM250.. the lowest that I can remember was RM280 at viewnet.

See this old post:

I feel something fishy there......
There were once a period when the HDD failure rate hike up and few companies reduce the warranty period, around 2003 if no mistaken.
*
It was around 2008-2009 and it was Seagate. The notorious firmware issue on certains models... there's a big thread about it somewhere in here.
Back then they were kings due to the 5 Year Warranty.

it looks to me the price of 1TB are still very high.

hopes of HDD falling back to 170 seems pretty damn hard.

Yup, better buy a 3TB drive instead of 1TB.

1TB x 3 = 3TB
RM279 x 3 = RM837

3TB single
RM519

Anyways, for those not in the know, read this before you grab a 3TB drive:

Yeah the Seagate 3TB (RM499 - viewnet, jayacom) is better than WD 3TB Green (RM480 - jayacom).

QUOTE
Performance? Seagate Barracuda

The fastest 3.5” high-capacity desktop hard drive in this round-up is Seagate’s new 3 TB Barracuda (ST3000DM001). It offers almost 200 MB/s sequential read performance, similar write speeds, and it runs relatively coolly thanks to its three-platter design.

However, Seagate didn't design this Barracuda for 24/7 operation. If you need higher availability, you'll want to check out Seagate’s Barracuda XT or Hitachi's Deskstar 7K3000. Both are five-platter designs, robust, and still fast enough for video editing or video surveillance servers. Three terabyte hard drives are probably the best compromise between capacity and cost, as 2 TB disks might not always be big enough and 4 TB models are still very expensive.
Another review:
http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Seagate-Bar...-Review/?page=8

QUOTE
Prices for hard drives are most definitely on the increase these days due to shortages, and that issue is expected to continue (though it may abate somewhat) through 2012. Costs for HDDs are also not especially consistent from vendor to vendor at the moment. However, we did find the Barracuda 3TB for $229 in multiple places, which is frankly a good deal right now for the performance and capacity the drive offers.

Another factor to consider when making a purchasing decision, especially with a device like a mechanical hard drive that could eventually fail, is the warranty. Seagate used to offer a lengthy 5-year warranty, but this Barracuda 3TB has just a 2-year warranty. (The Hitachi Deskstar 3TB we put up against it has a 3-year warranty.)

The bottom line, though, is that other than the 3TB Hitachi Deskstars, there just isn’t much competition for the Barracuda 3TB. For the features and performance you get with this drive at the current price, it just might be your best bet for a 3TB monster.

Need some urgent help here.
My mom recently bought a WD Passport 1TB.
I helped her to format her laptop and back up everything important in that HDD.
Everything was good, all files accessible without any trouble until today.
She couldn't see the drive from My Computer.
So I checked for her, I checked device manager, the HDD is detected but it's not working.
Disk Management detected but with error.
I stick my ear to the HDD and I can hear some spinning follow by "siren" (more like error sound - ****spin****dngg**dngg** ) something like that. Need urgent help.

Run the short test first. If it fails.. well you don't have to run the extended test. GG.

It didn't even test? It should take longer than 2 seconds even if it did run the test. Sounds like a problematic disk to me.
I guess 'extended test' is not working as well?

BTW, sharing this to those who don't know..
Seagate's updated DiscWizard software will allow support for their 3TB drives even on boards without UEFI and certain 32-bit OS.

QUOTE
http://seagate.com/support/downloads/beyond-2tb/
Until recently, using a hard drive larger than about 2.1TB has been difficult from
a technical perspective. Back in the early 1980s when many of the fundamental
hardware and software designs for computers were created, no one could fathom
a hard drive approaching even 1TB, so limiting the logical block address (LBA)
range to 2.1TB was thought to be more than adequate. As a result, operating
systems, BIOS controllers, host interface drivers and device drivers have used th
same basic limitation of 2.1TB.

Newer versions of Windows (Windows Vista and Windows 7), when combined
with a new BIOS called UEFI and when configured correctly, have the native
capability of using hard drives larger than 2.1TB. The problem, however, is that
UEFI BIOS systems are less prevalent and more expensive than legacy PC
BIOS systems. Also, Windows XP systems still represent a sizable portion of
the installed base. So what do you do if you want to use one of the new
high-capacity hard drives coming to market that exceeds this 2.1TB limit?
Seagate has the answer.

Seagate has broken the 2.1TB barrier by developing a creative solution which
allows you to utilize all of your hard drive capacity over two or more partitions
when the drive is larger than 2.1TB. The new Seagate® Barracuda® XT 3TB hard
drive has been released, and it includes free access to our updated Seagate
DiscWizard™software. This newest version of the popular hard drive utility from
Seagate now includes functionality that allows you to easily configure a virtual
device driver to access all of your hard drive capacity.

Here's another review:
http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_barra...ers_st3000dm001

QUOTE
Pros

Almost 200MB/s sequential transfer speeds
Very good performance in our HTPC benchmark
Improved power efficiency
Cons

Struggled with the read-intensive Gaming benchmark
Bottom Line

Overall, the new 3TB Barracuda moves in the right direction and certainly whets our appetite for upcoming higher capacity hard drives based on 1TB platters. It offers faster speeds than the prior version through most of our benchmarks and is many ways is the fastest 7200RPM 3TB 3.5" hard drive on the market. Couple that with the improved power profile and Seagate has a great option for those craving capacity and performance from a hard drive.

Enough poison? tongue.gif
