Hi guys, I know this is a Sony Nex discussion, and I've already posted at the Wanna buy New Camera thread. I'm really torn between Sony NEX F3 and Canon 550D. The key points I wanna highlight are these:
1) I really want the 50mm F/1.8 lens. 2) With that lens and the prime lens, Canon 550D is only heavier by about 100g~150g. 3) Sony will cost RM600~RM900 more than Canon including the 50mm F/1.8 lens. 4) (I think) Sony performs slightly better in terms of image quality in low-light condition. I mainly shoot candid shots and objects, and I love bokeh. Is the 16mm pancake worth getting and useful? If I decide to go for Sony, I'll be getting either: 1) NEX F3 + 50mm OR 2) NEX C3 twin lens + 50mm Please let me hear your thoughts and how'd you decide. I need to upgrade soon and I still haven't decided. This post has been edited by Kierrs: Jun 5 2012, 03:32 PM |

QUOTE(sbvc79 @ Jun 3 2012, 10:38 PM) any cheap adapter out there for nex5n to use other cheaper lens?? sony lens is killing me with his sky rocking price man!!! I have Konica Hexanon 50mm F1.7, F1.4, 40mm F1.8, and others ..Those are much sharper classic prime lenses compare to most of the modern lens except Leica/Zeiss... I'm going towards Leica-M mount lenses, so have to let go my Hexanon collections. do you interested? |

DSLR is way bulkier than NEX camera lor. 3) Sony will cost RM600~RM900 more than Canon including the 50mm F/1.8 lens. Canon 50 1.8 ciplak quality nia, no in-lens stabilizer also. 4) (I think) Sony performs slightly better in terms of image quality in low-light condition. I think the newer C3 , F3 can win 550D in noise performance I mainly shoot candid shots and objects, and I love bokeh. Is the 16mm pancake worth getting and useful? If I decide to go for Sony, I'll be getting either: Yes 16mm is extremely useful due to its light weight, small size and wideness. 1) NEX F3 + 50mm OR 2) NEX C3 twin lens + 50mm Please let me hear your thoughts and how'd you decide. I need to upgrade soon and I still haven't decided. I got more choices to play with lenses at least |

The key points I wanna highlight are these: many Pencake lens are very cheap lenses with very simple optical design. You will get much distortion from it.1) I really want the 50mm F/1.8 lens. The key points I wanna highlight are these: if money not a problem, i'd buy both. Headaches occur when compared 1/2 oranges and 1/2 apples, which is what this case is about since both can produce the images you want and both have their own 50mm. Well moot point but..550D has 2 more megapixels ,but NEX has a larger sensor size which should support your point 4)!!. I also thought 50mm 1.8 is more for portraits?? oh.. maybe 'candid shots' in your case refers to candid portraits i guess.1) I really want the 50mm F/1.8 lens. I need to upgrade soon and I still haven't decided. For me I'd take NEX-5N /F3 because my priority is size, weight and the articulated screen. It fits into my slim backpack stuffed with spare tubes, tyre pump, lever, food, etc.. It survived a > 60km ride on a road bike. Easier to approach people since they are less intimidated with it. Technical specs are all there for comparisons , so I'll share the practical side of things. F3 would be a girl magnet since Only in certain conditions I would prefer the 550D, like for studio type portraits (flash sync, commander thingy) and, if people are paying for your work they would feel more 'worth it' if they see their pictures taken with a proper DSLR instead of a dinky silver compact. Yea.. I guess for more work related, first impressions or advanced and creative flash lighting purposes..550D is the way to go. For everything else, there's the NEX. Darn, did i sound like a Nex biased, Mastercard commercial? Seriously, what's your priority? This post has been edited by nlik: Jun 5 2012, 11:56 PM |

Thanks everyone for the long replies!
My priority... I guess I really want to just take interesting pictures when I go out, so mainly landscape/scenery, candid portraits yes, and interesting objects that catch my eyes. So, I guess Sony is the way to go. But still not sure if I should get twin lens. One more question from a camera noob here, do people actually go out with just the 16mm pancake without zoom lens? (for normal everyday shots) This post has been edited by Kierrs: Jun 6 2012, 12:08 PM |

QUOTE(Kierrs @ Jun 6 2012, 12:05 PM) Thanks everyone for the long replies! I think composition and quick snap is more important for you. so SEL1855 will be quite handy in this case since it provide from wide angle to portrait focal length! My priority... So, I guess Sony is the way to go. But still not sure if I should get twin lens. One more question from a camera noob here, do people actually go out with just the 16mm pancake without zoom lens? (for normal everyday shots) 16mm is suitable for landscape, highly not recommended for portrait as it will make the face wider in close distance! girls will curse u for this!! It is perfect cheaper way to use the 16mm with Fisheye and UWA adapter and have some fun!!! For me, now i mainly using the Voigtlander 28/2.0 and SEL30F35 as i found 28mm/30mm is very close to our eyes view angle without much crop! not much chance of using the 16mm yet. now i need only a long zoom 300mm/400mm for moon/star shooting and sport/wild life! still looking for a good cheap old lens!:hmm: |

Really sharp?
I heard it has poor corner sharpness when wide open compared to the counterpart Sigma 30mm at wide open. |
