I'm currently using GF2... They have removed the shutter release plug...

Is there any other alternative ways of using a remote shutter release?
Maybe control through the hot shoe?

yea.. that is the only option now... however, lets say you are traveling... you are taking a photo with timer yourself... the camera will be unattended for 10s or more... snatch thieves might just walk in and steal...

If you have a wireless shutter, you can snap a shot in less than 10s...

why not...

This is how to see shutter count on E-PL1:

Camera should be off, then:
1. press and hold the menu button and then press power on
2. enter menu and go to lcd brightness menu
3. press "info", then "ok",
4. repeat step 3 one more time, olympus interface info will appear (
5. press in sequence... up, down, left, right, shutter, up
6. voila! shutter count is in page 2 (R = xxxxx)

source: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp...essage=37490320

others models should be different..

Does anyone know where I can get 46mm and 52mm B+W lens filter f-pro or xs-pro?

I've checked with a few forumers here... seems like it was stated on their thread but they don't take in...

Im deciding between these few now. Voigtlander used mf which isn't a prob as I use mf all the time.

I absolutely loving the leica 25mm, why don't u show some pictures poison the rest here tongue.gif

45mm is around the corner. 25mm dy launch but expensive bcos lens r built by leica. Voiglander 25mm have maximum aperture at f0,95 which provide very nice bokeh.

@nutrinos, do they ship to Malaysian address or this battery is sold at the normal shop? When you said that it doesn't give any warning, isn't the e-p3 has battery indicator? Or the octopus doesn't send this to the e-p3, hence, no warning?

Added on September 20, 2011, 9:01 amChecking their website, they've the BLS-1 and no BLS-5, what is the different between the two? Interchangeable?

I'm using octopus as well. I'm not sure what indicator nutrinos is talking but when you start up your cam you've got a indicator on the top left.

BLS-5 is the newer version of the battery got some safety feature. Both can be use by E-P3 but BLS-5 need diff charger.

Hope this help

Nope, they don't have the same specs and that is why you see there is price different between the models.

Hi guys smile.gif I'm very new to the world of photography... but in my current work I use camera a lot and it has piqued my interest in snapping great shots.

As I want to try something else than PNS camera, the MFT sounds like a great start

Can any sifu recommend what MFT I should get for beginner? smile.gif
My budget could be anywhere from RM1500 to RM2500

Of course value for money is important! biggrin.gif its a plus also if it can record 1080p HD videos, thanks!

17mm F2.8 pancake lens is a very decent yet near awesome lense I personally prefer that for street shooting than 14-42mm LOL

GOSH, I own a 25mm f0.95 Voigtlander, it is manual lens but i have to tell u that when it par with GH2, it's beyond what u can believe... GH3 can make manual lens to have the "Magnification assist",.. just like the Manual focus assist... but since this the lens is not build to have electrical contact, lower end GH1 (or other model) cant do the zooming....

the bokeh is just BOKEHLICIOUS~~~

Anyone tried these type of lens? http://bit.ly/nCiXvv
Any comment on it?

I'm new to photography... don't really understand these:
QUOTE
    Lens Mount: C mount / 16MM / Cine
    Focus Length: 25mm
    Aperture: f/1.4 - f/16 - Close
    Glass: Multi-Coated
    Focus Operation: Manual
    Aperture Operation: Manual
    Angle of View: 19.6°
Closet focusing distance: 30cm ~ infinity (without micro adapter ring)

(After add a micro adapter ring, you can focus about 20 cm distance;
add two micro adapters ring, you can focus about 15 cm distance)

Hahah I've confused you... I want to check out the wide difference between a 116mm(35mm eq) and 28mm(35mm eq)...
For example, if you stand 0.5m away from the focus object... how much difference in wideness...
Not sure if you can get me some image to compare the amount that can cover... I want to know if potrait is good or not...

All sifus, which wide angel lens you recommend for GF2 about RM1000-1500? don't mind it is Canon, Olympus, Nikkor or Voigtlander.. as long any brand it can fix to GF2 with any adapter. smile.gifsmile.gif

as i know rm1000-1500 cant get u any wide angle unless u getting samyang 14mm..but m42 crop factor is 2x so it'll become 28mm, pointless LOL..unless u getting panasonic 7-14mm f4 (14-28mm equivalent) which cost 3k+ ;/

Personally I feel 90mm (Oly 45mm) is too long for streetphotography. 40mm (20mm panny) or 35mm (Oly 17mm) is just about right.

Since the cup of coffee is not going anywhere... isn't it better to just drag the shutter instead of using a higher ISO speed.

One of the benefits of small'ish cameras is that you can rest them anywhere... on a bag... jacket... cups etc.

Those film SLR camera got B speed. This speed allow us to press and hold the shutter button to prevent shutter door close.

but in our digital SLR nowadays, where to set this thing??

Most decent cameras still have bulb mode wat... but in most cases.... no need to open until a few minutes kwa.... so since I'm almost always on aperture priority mode... so just set a nice low ISO.... a nice sharp aperture.... kasi rest the camera ... slap on a 2 sec timer.... exp.comp secukup rasa and shoot.

In view that there seem to be a few ep3 users over here, just wanted to draw ur attention to something I have to offer to "pimp" up the retro look of ur PEN slightly further.

No guarantees though, I'm looking to get both 25mm and 12mm if financial allows.

if u are living around penang, the price there should be cheaper than in KL.
but if in KL,try ask from Selangor Foto at Pertama Complex. just bought my e-p3 for rm2799 with extra original battery and other basic accessories. without battery, only rm2700. e-pl3 should be much cheaper

a noob question here

how come my histogram graph keep on left to middle but my exposure is showing toward positive side when i,m using old school lens? The result of tis shot in tis situation is the picture are correctly taken same as wat my exposure show. Meaning that if exposure is positive, the picture will bright. Rather than histogram graph keep on showing left (dark)

sifu here might explain tis kind of situation? Thx

left - black
right - white
middle - contrast

tats my understanding smile.gif

open photoshop and play level, u'll see the histogram and adjust it then u'll understand how it works

i'm candid photographer and Still art lover, need to use some external flash and zoom or micro lens which micro 4thirds camera is fit to me, my option is:
1. Panasonic lumix GF Series
2. Olympus Pen Series
3. Sony NEX series

for candid photographer, i think u want something fast and snappy, but also cheap.

go for olympus e-pm1 and any fast prime lens like oly 45mm or 12mm f2 or PL 20mm or PL 25mm.

oly 45mm costs only about rm1k.

e-pm1 kit costs about rm1880

can't say much about gf series, but i think oly is focusing faster compare to panasonic at this moment.

Nex series, no comment. lols

camera not cheap actually, because of its small size camera plus DSLR Quality plus interchangeable lens.

all is about RM1900+ come with single kit lens. perhaps u can get old version like epl1, ep1 etc.. may be cheap but also around RM1700+ nod.gif

Just want to tell you guys that Olympus is having a roadshow at Midvalley until this sunday.

Not bad prices, but the best price is what they are selling their 17mm for - RM599!

even better, they have a contest which the first prize is an E-PL3.

not bad right?

http://bit.ly/t4Syde here got some more info.

Sharing my e-p3 settings :

Mode : Muted, Contrast: 0/-1, Sharpness: -1, Saturation: 0, Gradation: Normal

Using exif-tool software, I've tried to read the real hidden configuration for every mode provided in the camera, I choosed Muted as main mode as this mode provides the nearest color reproduction to real life ( according to test made by DigitalCameraInfo.

Using exif-tool, for muted mode, sharpness and saturation are already at -1 for both. by adjusting another -1, the output will be -2

NF is recommended to be set at Off or Low and NR should be at Auto.

For WB, I've set overall Green -1 and Amber 0
Keep warm WB is set at Off

Last thing, for Display, I use Natural and with Brightness and Temperature both set at -2, as i find this will show the most correct reproduction to my eyes.

I know these has been discussed many times in other thread and forums.

I just try to share my experience with my e-p3. if any mistake by me, u are welcome to correct me. thanks, cheers

glad it helps, but if u prefer to use Natural mode, the sharpness should be set to -2 as the factory setting already at 0

in Muted mode, factory setting for sharpness is already -1

oh, auto-ISO ranges from 200-500 (ofc with Leica 25mm f1.4 biggrin.gif)

as the noise filter in e-p3 will be set at Low/Off, the details of taken picture should be retained more than before, but sharpness setting done inside the camera body is not very reliable and will destroy the details of the picture.

moreover, if u want to do no more further post-processing with pc regarding the sharpnesss, u can use 0 as your setting for sharpness in Muted as this is actually already -1, which is quite acceptable already.

I'm also basing the idea from this E-P3 settings for best JPEGs thread.

but they prefer to use Natural mode, but I choose Muted mode for more real color production.

hope that helps, i've also been testing around biggrin.gif

3107, to tell u the truth, people been arguing around to keep 20mm or PL25mm. but i never had the 20mm and i just go for the 25mm.

honestly, it depends on ur preferences, portability or quality.

20mm sure portable and slim and the quality also quite high but with slower autofocus ( with olympus e-p3 and related bodies )

25mm is huge (gigantic maybe tongue.gif), but the output quality is maybe higher than 20mm, autofocus is certainly faster (a lot maybe)

since i bought the 25mm, i never put back my kit 14-42mm..currently thinking of reselling it back.

i think the 14mm f2.5 is good for walkabout since most of the time u walk in daylight, f2.5 is good enough and the lens is very light with fast focus

only should buy 20mm or 25mm for portrait

then again, if ur into portrait, better go for dslr

so i think i'm gonna get the 14mm prime smile.gif

actually it does matter if u are into portrait shoot which should be at least 25mm and above to reduce the amount of distortion.

14mm is good if u are taking picture generally without people's faces up close.

i've been that road before in four-thirds, owned 9-18mm,25mm,14-54mm,40-150mm,135mm. at last i sold everything except the trusty 14-54mm, ofc before i jump from olympus e-3 to olympus e-p3.

as long as we keep shooting (camera not guns tongue.gif)

its only my opinion, but of coz a lot of people use front and back too, includes me, lols.

its just some button/dial will be a bit recessed, but with after a few usages, u will get accustomed to it. smile.gif

Well I'm looking to take photographs as a hobby,
I want a decent camera with DSLR quality, but i don't want a DSLR because it's too bulky.
So i think the EP3 would fit the bill?

The only problem i have is the cost, which i am able to afford just barely.

I'm told that if you really wanted to spend 3k on a camera,
you might as well get a DSLR. As for the same price the quality's better.
Is that true?

who : hobbyst
why : small size, cost, quality
where : not sure , event , people or landscape
what : not sure , event , people or landscape
how : buy from shop lols.

i can't really argue regarding the quality or so related, because in my opinion,
camera is one of the factor deciding the quality but the main factor is the photographer himself.

if u think, u will enjoy smaller camera system, then micro4/3 (ie Olympus e-p3) will suit u better.
because i have many frens, who bought DSLR and then just leave it inside the wardrobe.
Maybe they are not prepare to bring the large camera to everywhere.

i was once into DSLR too, almost all olympus DSLR i have used (e-410,e-420,e-520,e-1,e-3). just recently in a few month i move into mirrorless 4/3 (olympus e-p3)

first impression, almost all my picture blurred out, due to my instability using camera without viewfinder and also without high quality and fast lens such as Olympus 14-54mm f2.8-3.5

but after a few usages, i've accustomed myself and also got myself the Leica 25mm 1.4 which never leave my camera tongue.gif

truth to say, study urself first, and make sure are u ready to jump into BIG camera system or "small" camera system. if u are into small one, i will suggest, u buy the oly e-p3 and if possible add a good prime such panasonic 20mm f1.7 (low budget) or PL 25mm 1.4 (high budget)

Hey guys, I'm just too lazy to do some homework on researching. Thus, I thought of getting some advices from you guys.

I'm looking for

Size: Compact and light. (I also owned a DSLR, but it's heavy for some occasion)
Quality: almost like DSLR quality I hope.
What I shoot: indoor gathering, dining area, and most important, for travel use.
Budget: > RM2k (but worst is I'm afraid Im buying more lens laugh.gif )

I know there is M4/3 as well as APS-C. What are the difference actually?
I saw there are few types of Oly Pen.

Which one do you recommend?

Sorry if I asked too many questions.. blush.gif

Budget: > RM2k ? typo maybe? because it can also mean that u can spent up to rm10k..lols

of course up to today, there are various generation of Olympus PEN.

the latest generation consists of Olympus e-p3 (high end), e-pl3 (medium/lite) and e-pm1 (mini/consumer low end)

basically all three use the same sensor and can be said the quality also has no different, if i'm not mistaken. The differences are only in certain physical factor, like extra direct buttons, dial buttons,touchscreen/tiltscreen etc and in software, almost no difference.

micro 4/3 sensor is basically the same size with the 4/3 sensor, they just remove the mirror and make the flange a little shorter, thus producing PEN series.

micro 4/3 sensor, compares to others like APS-C, main difference is the size. you can see it clearly with this comparison picture user posted image

if u prefer more buttons with extra touchscreen, go for olympus e-p3 ( costs around rm2700 with kit lens )
if u prefer tiltscreen, go for olympus e-pl3
if u prefer simplicity, more like compact camera, go for olympus e-pm1

for better indoor shooting, i recommend u get an external flashgun like metz 48-AF

but if u prefer no flash (due to weight or sumthing), get the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 (rm1450) but i've heard that the autofocus is not so impressive. but if u are shooting still static indoor, it should be no problem.

if u have more budget, certainly go for Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4.
if u can live with a bit longer lens like olympus 45mm 1.8, this can be great lens too, only rm1k

The differences are only in certain physical factor, like extra direct buttons, dial buttons,touchscreen/tiltscreen etc and in software, almost no difference.

micro 4/3 sensor is basically the same size with the 4/3 sensor, they just remove the mirror and make the flange a little shorter, thus producing PEN series.

micro 4/3 sensor, compares to others like APS-C, main difference is the size. you can see it clearly with this comparison picture user posted image

if u prefer more buttons with extra touchscreen, go for olympus e-p3 ( costs around rm2700 with kit lens )
if u prefer tiltscreen, go for olympus e-pl3
if u prefer simplicity, more like compact camera, go for olympus e-pm1

for better indoor shooting, i recommend u get an external flashgun like metz 48-AF

but if u prefer no flash (due to weight or sumthing), get the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 (rm1450) but i've heard that the autofocus is not so impressive. but if u are shooting still static indoor, it should be no problem.

if u have more budget, certainly go for Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4.
if u can live with a bit longer lens like olympus 45mm 1.8, this can be great lens too, only rm1k

hi creezalird, may i ask some noob questions..im currently have a canon s95, thinking of upgrading to micro 4/3 as i found s95 didn't snap photos as quickly as i want sometimes, and will end up blur images too (maybe my hand shakes). anyway will be good if my new camera can shoot faster and has longer zoom.

but prob is i want it to be compact enough to take out to travel, don't wan to have external flash etc, best if could don't have to buy many lens (save money). is there a len which can do all the jobs? like my s95??

if micro 4/3 without lens, could it work as good as my s95?

many thanks! rclxub.gif

first question, is ur s95 behaving like that indoor or outdoor? because if indoor, s95 actually one of the most reliable compact camera for indoor shooting, but if u feel the need for micro4/3, let me remind u, by using Auto mode or what so ever related, will never make u a better photographer. using micro4/3 or any advanced camera system, u need to learn almost all basic of photography such as aperture,ISO, shutter speed and DOF etc.

first u need to justify urself if u can live with prime lens aka no zoom lens. because micro4/3 is kind of new system and still dont have good fast zoom lens, but already have many good prime lens such as Panasonic 20mm 1.7, Leica 25mm 1.4 and Olympus 12mm 2.0 and Olympus 45mm 1.8

if u can live with prime lens, i can recommend u get the e-p3/e-pl3/e-pm1, all of them have, can say the fastest autofocus system.

why dont u find frens who are using this system too and try them out? if not, just go and buy one, try live with the kit lens first, if that wont satisfy u, get any of the prime lens mentioned above, cheapest one oly 45mm 1.8 but kind of a bit long for normal compact user, maybe get the Panasonic 20mm 1.7

Thank you very much for your info.
Budget is around RM2k, coz just sell off D5100.
I like the tilt screen, as I can Self-Portrait. tongue.gif but at the same time, i would love the feature to be DSLR-like.
As for flash, I am not looking for it, coz it will add the bulkiness.

As u mentioned earlier just now, the zoom lens auto focus is slower?
Coz I was actually looking for a quite good all-rounder lens, and also a prime lens.

One more question, if the prime lens of 24mm, is it 24mm or need to 24mm x 4/3?

the crop factor is approx 2.0 for m4/3.. meaning that 14mm lens in m4/3 is equivalent 28mm in full frame.

The kit 18-55mm that comes together with the body is still 18-55mm for the m4/3, right?

All m4/3 lens can be used on any m4/3 body, or Oly must be with Oly, Pana must be with Pana?

usually the kit zoom is 14-42mm (28-84mm equivalent)...
Lenses can used among oly and pana....
however, certain features wont work (non-essential ones)...

i know my e-pl1's TTL flash wont work when i put 20mm f1.7 on it...

the oly kit lens 14-42mm is not slow in term of Autofocus but i meant with slow Aperture f3.5-5.6.
for autofocus, it can be the fastest, even comparable to high end DSLR with good lighting condition.

all m4/3 lenses are interchangeable.

for example, right now i'm using e-p3 with panasonic leica 25mm 1.4

u can also use any other lens using adapter (manual focus only of coz)

U mean compatibility as in lens?

Looking at how you guys upgrading lens making me worried that I'll spend more money on this.

That's the point of interchangeable lens. Different lens for different purpose.

With the f3.5-5.6 kit zoom lens, low light performance and "bokeh-ness" is similiar to fast compacts like the XZ-1 and the upcoming Fuji X10.

sorry i mean compact-bility X)
well, trust me u wun needed tat much lens and if u did, it will ended up collecting dust..casual user just get a kit lens and prime lens will do. Or just get yourself 14-150mm (if i not wrong the length) and a prime (45mm, 20mm or 25mm) smile.gif

as for me i spend only RM380 on Helios 58mm. Tats my prime lens wink.gif manual focus is nice with live view. The only let down it, cant do much manual focus under sunlight or lowlight..cant c the image via screen X)

welcome spiderwick

all three third generation PEN series come with kit lens 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 which is actually kind of good already for outdoor street photography assuming u dont stalking people from far distance..lols

e-pm1 doesnt come with built in flash but come with external small flash connected to the hotshoe if i am not mistaken. secondly, u are shooting mostly outdoor,street..so why need flash..lmao...just get a good better lens like pana 20mm 1.7 or get any long telephoto lens (manual) if u prefer stalking people..hehe

of course for macro shoot normally u need dedicated lens for that, but u can just find old cheap manual lens for that especially macro shoot normally are taken without autofocus.

i think u should just go to any shop nearby, ask them to try any of the micro4/3 model, if u feel satisfy, buy away..

14-150mm lens is nice covered all range but quite expensive around RM2k+

i would go for prime lens and oly 45mm F1.8 and kit lens.. dah cukup makan..

@jloi and @subrok007,

I don't really wanna purchase so many lens. I'm looking for a light weight one so that I don't underuse it like how I underuse my DSLR. At least i can just put the camera in my handbag and wont cause any tiredness due to too heavy.

What all rounder is good and cheaper one? lol

since u r DSLR user.... i would recommend u a EP3 or EPL2, and purchase panasonic 20mm F1.7 primes lens...

if u buy EP3 package. It comes together with 14-42mm lens only (i havent see any twins lens package in market yet). or if u buy EPL2, it comes together either 14-42mm lens only or 14-42mm and 40-150mm lens.. and u no need worry about weight.. its really lightweight lens.

panasonic 20mm F1.7 it equivalent to 40mm in full frame.. good for walk around, street shooting...

EPL3 and EPM1.. i not really recommend.. just my 2cent.. laugh.gif

If you have budget, get a B+W...
It's worth the money...

I've been travelling in Australia recently, Spring season is the worst, with rain and sudden temperature change of 10-15 degree celcius.

Water droplets just slights off the filter without leaving a trace. else just puff a breath on the filter and it is clean! Fog on filter leaves very fast.

Hahah ever since I put on B+W, I've nvr put the lens cap on... lol

welcome spiderwick

all three third generation PEN series come with kit lens 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 which is actually kind of good already for outdoor street photography assuming u dont stalking people from far distance..lols

e-pm1 doesnt come with built in flash but come with external small flash connected to the hotshoe if i am not mistaken. secondly, u are shooting mostly outdoor,street..so why need flash..lmao...just get a good better lens like pana 20mm 1.7 or get any long telephoto lens (manual) if u prefer stalking people..hehe

of course for macro shoot normally u need dedicated lens for that, but u can just find old cheap manual lens for that especially macro shoot normally are taken without autofocus.

i think u should just go to any shop nearby, ask them to try any of the micro4/3 model, if u feel satisfy, buy away..

Added on November 7, 2011, 3:50 pm

jloi, i'm actually just got back from germany, so i am not very accustomed with buy and sell here in malaysia.

can u recommend any shop where i can get a close view of many manual lenses maybe around KL? thanks
*
many thanks again creezalird, will walk to the shop nearby n try them out. at the meantime, try to figure whether i could commit so much money for the lens or not tongue.gif

I use my lens hood when I'm travelling and don't want to have lens cap on.. it protect the any dust or water droplet on the lens when drizzle..
But it does help a lot to reduce flare when u have a bright light, like Sun, on ur top 4 corner..

that,s y i dilemma in choosing, both r good lens with fast aperture which will deliver creamy bokeh,

my point is hopefully 1 lens can do all stuff like portrait, walkaround, street etc.

I have close to person face if i use 20mm and shot in portrait. But good for street. Walkaround

if i using 45mm lens then i might face problem when shooting landscape all those wide view.

Quite dilemma now. Both lens price quite affordable.

25mm = 50mm(35mm Equ)@ f1.4 is good for alot of type photography if not required zoom. If you expecting to take alot movement picture, hell yeah it very good and the price also very good!

Hi guys,

I'm very new in this, hope you all can get me clear about all these..

Is EVIL and M43 the exact same thing?

I'm currently undecided whether to buy a DSLR or a M43/EVIL.

Please advice, thank you.

im getting e-p3 soon ... im thinking which 1 better

a) trade kit lens for a 14-150mm lens

b) keep the kit lens and buy a telephoto 40-150mm lens

mostly using for travel ... so im thinking having 2 lenses n keep changing will be a bit troublesome , and do i need a hood?

u can actually search on google and u ll get to find great answer.

yeah. Oly Pana M43, Sony Nex, Pentax Q, Nikon 1. these are all EVIL cameras.

so advs for dslr are:
-cheaper lens. as m43 lenses are so expensive. *of course they are much bigger than m43's lenses*
-better ergonomic.
-with viewfinder *which I only use at outdoor under bright sunlight*

advs for m43 are:
-small
-light weight
-convenient
-pretty

in terms of image quality It's comparable with dslr.
u can campare it using dpreview studio scene comparison.

correct for all ur question.

1) gf3 and ep3 is M4/3 and use m4/3 lenses
2) panasonic lens can be use in olympus body and vice versa.
3) yes canon lens to m4/3 need adapter and kenot auto focus

yeah..depends on what type of portrait you wanna take...
20mm is fine for environmental portrait...
if you wanna short face only portrait, then you have to get real close to the subject then distortion will be pronounced...

u can actually search on google and u ll get to find great answer.

So, you're saying that EVIL and M43 are actually different systems right?

I did refer to certain sites via google, I still don't get it. Some say that they are the same while some say that they are different, please clear my head about this smile.gif

I was considering the D5100 from Nikon as the price seems affordable and it has great features plus the excellence in image quality(breath-taking), but when I ventured further into other systems such as EVIL & M43, I'm getting undecisive whether to purchase a DSLR.

What are your opinions about EVIL & M43? Will they become the future cameras and have the DSLRs phased out?
EVIL & M43 are very compact after all.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 seems to be a great device despite the limited kit lens(only two), on par with the D5100 Nikon or better? rclxub.gif

m43 price is almost equivalent to a DSLR because it's still new, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still very new to this =/

Another problem of these devices over a DSLR is the lack of a viewfinder, I suppose an optical viewfinder is important for quality shots, is it? Imagine what happens if you try to take a photo under the sun where the LCD screen will be washed out by the ray.

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons because I'm deciding to buy a camera by December. I've been a fan of Nikon, but if the m43 suits me better, I suppose I'll have to go for the Lumix..

The Nikon D5100 seems to be perfect but people keep telling me to get a compact camera so that I wouldn't regret it, gosh..

The zen of shooting with viewfinder and LCD totally different so this effects the outcome. VF feels more intimate while LCD (dare I say) more accurate in framing.

Let's put it another way....

EVIL/MILC/ILC or whatever they call it is a category of cameras typically having a bigger sensor than compacts, have interchangeable lens and doesn't come with a mirror assembly.

Micro Four Third is just one system in this category. There's quite a few companies that is part of this system but only Panasonic and Olympus is active. Lens are interchangeable within the micro four third system... the lens will have a micro 4/3 logo.

Other EVIL/MILC/ILC/MILF systems includes Sony's NEX (E-mount) system, Nikon's 1 (CX mount) system, Samsung's NX system and Pentax's Q system.

Primary benefit of EVIL/MILC/ILC is that they are seen to be more portable and less geeky than DSLR's.

In terms of which is better... personally I prefer a DSLR + compact camera combo....though I'm following the developments with great interest..... YMMV... depends on the shooter.

Owh I see, now I get the clearer picture, thanks for the explanation, sniper smile.gif

Now I've narrowed down further.. I just viewed the Lumix GX1, seems to be amazing with the optional tilt-shift Live View Finder, fast auto-focus(lost to Nikon 1's speed though), and the power zoom! However, it will be released in December, gotta wait for it.. An alternative would be the Lumix G3.

Then, I need to compare further with the Nikon D5100, I have great impressions of that camera. Later on, I will have to compare with the Canon EOS 600D & 60D too, looks awesome..

I've been using snapsort.com to compare, it helped me a lot.

Please advice me smile.gif

got viewfinder or use live view is same sh*t nia. in d end is still depend ur eye to see it.
one of the advantage of live view is u can shoot high or low angle. E-P3 is using OLED screen, thus it wun wash out under the sun ray

Anyway EVIL = Mirrorless Camera

Mirrorless Camera = Sony NEX, Samsung NX, Olympus Pen, Lumix Gh, GF and GX. Nikon 1

Sony NEX, Samsung NX = CMOS Sensor (Same with entry level dslr sensor) where only 1.5/1.6x crop factor
Olympus, Panasonic = m4/3 where sensor are 2x crop factor
Nikon 1 = half size of m4/3 sensor size and 2.7X crop factor

So conclusion, EVIL = Sony NEX, Samsung NX, Olympus Pen, Lumix Gh, GF and GX. Nikon 1.
Just each of them had difference sensor and crop factor and lens mount.

dun get confuse smile.gif

Hmm, speed of focus. But the GX1 was a pre-production GX1, check out this video.

Haha, what you said was quite right, but I guess it's personal preference. A swivel EVF would be cool, therefore the Nikon D5100 is great XD

Ya, I know what EVIL cameras are, checked via wikipedia. I was only confused over EVIL n m43 in the past, now I get a clearer picture smile.gif

Can you tell me more about crop factor? The lesser the better?

Lol, touchscreen is going a must have for you when you make your next purchase of camera huh?

Can you give me some feedback regarding touchscreens? I don't find it necessary but maybe you could convince me XD

I still don't get much about crop factor eventhough I've read that article in wiki shocking.gif

I suppose a 1.3-2.0 is safe since DSLRs have crop factors at that range =x

not reli a must but just some extra features coz it allow me choose focusing point and snap in the speed of light rather then press left and right 1 by 1 using button.

base on my own understanding, crop factor is all refer to 35mm format.

for eg dslr with 1.5x crop factor when mount on 18mm lens, it actually is 18mm X 1.5 = 27mm in 35mm format

for m4/3 crop factor is 2 where the kit lens 14mm actually is 14 X 2 = 28mm in 35mm format

for nikon 1 with 2.7x crop factor where 10mm kit lens = 27mm in 35mm format.

compact camera with 1/2.2" sensor usually have 5.5x factor

for dslr, they have their own lens for Full frame. Eg Nikon for DX (crop sensor) and FX (full frame = 35 mm eq) lens

picture speaks a thousand words...
by using the full frame sensor as reference, the field of view (FOV) of other sensors are relative to full frame...
at the same focal length, the 1.6x APS-C sensor FOV is as if cropped when compared to full frame...hence crop factor...

Hmm, that's quite convincing actually.. I thought the focus could be toggled by turning dial around the lens, isn't it?

I'll make touchscreen as optional for now, I suppose not many support touchscreen yet.. At least not the D5100 =x

I can't recall if the GX1 has a touchscreen, but the power zoom sure looks nice =x

By the way, great photos taken of the Hennesy Artistry, thumbs up! smile.gif

Wow, so the smaller the crop factor, the better. It can be concluded that way huh?

Now I'm really understanding what a crop factor is, thanks a lot highwind85.. Now I feel more light headed as I'm beginning to understand certain terms already XD

By the way, great photos taken of the Hennesy Artistry, thumbs up! smile.gif

yeap can b toggled with button but sometime need quick focusing n snap X) but i rarely use it though haha

basically yes smaller crop factor is better coz is nearer to 35mm format and u get wider coverage

my humble 2 sen...

1) first dog pic... if you can crop out the feet of the chair then it'll be cleaner. It'll work well too if you shot a bit wider to include the whole "ball" shape of the chair's feet.

2) second dog pic didn't work for me.

3) Perhaps you can use another format as 16:9 look kinda long on portrait orientation.

20mm is more of a general purpose lens cos it is small and takes wider picture, short min focus distance of 0.20m.
45mm is more of a portrait lens, nicer bokeh and it could be hard shooting at close range. Min focus distance of 0.5m.

Both has its use I guess. I own a 20mm and used it most of the time. Should be every m4/3 user's favorite I guess. icon_idea.gif

Looking at the picture it can bounce for normal room but not for ballroom.

my humble 2 sen...

Thanks! yeah coz i was shooting vid for wide screen =(

vivid settin only....

i got a lowepro versapack200aw, big, but can put personal stuffs.
thinkin of gettin a lowepro rezo170aw...probably 1 of the better design n well-thought bag design.
when u open the bag, the flip goes out away from ur body, so it doesn't block u if u wan to get stuffs or change lense...
i used many bags before, this is the most well-thought design, somemore it's pretty cheap

Thinking of getting the EP3 but unsure if I should go for just the single lens or twin lens.
I'm a newbie and was thinking by having a twin lens i get to learn more, am I on the right course? Or should I just opt for the single lens until I find its limitation and buy other lenses.

I believe I'm more of a traveler hence my interest lies towards scenery, street and food.

Opinions?

my opinion is go single kits lens, 14-42mm... Play around and familiar the system... Later u may want some awesome prime lens...

I started with kits then now I own another 45mm prime super nice bokeh lens...

One reason I'm having a hard time is because the additional lens will cost me just SGD219.

lonelywolf: If not mistaken, olympus will have one for M43 too. Not sure is it 1260 f2.8-4.. looking forward for that.

ijnek: noted. but i was quite hungry that time, snapped it fast and hentam the food d tongue.gif

darkages: My advice is go for twin package. Both lenses are useful at their own and I must say 40-150 is quite good in taking pics. In 35mm equiv, it gives 80-300mm, can shoot things from afar like birdy. wink.gif

IMHO, m43's works best with prime lens.

Reasons being, qualitatively the old 12MP sensor used by everything except the GH2, G3, GX1 is kinda dated and coupled with the slow kit lens, it doesn't have much substantial improvements over enthusiast compacts like the LX5 and the XZ-1. Handling performance is better though

Size wise with the kit zoom, it's also kinda quite thick which takes up space in a bag and definately not pocketable.

Hence, the best combo (in fact the original m43's were kitted with primes until they change direction towards consumers) is with the 14mm, 20/25mm and the 45mm.

Gonna be able to live with no zoom and the $$$ though.

fuji has some pretty good compacts, but poor marketing if u ask me...
their x100 is too expensive for me...lol
i got my ep2 when it was on clearance, abt rm1150 only with 17 f2.8...

hey ahmike,
the muffin, jus crack it a bit at the top to show some nice cake inside smile.gif
u make me wan to go to kenny roger's...

That was a good buy smile.gif
I see that Olympus can take great shots, so mouth watering drool.gif

lonelywolf: If not mistaken, olympus will have one for M43 too.

In 35mm equiv, it gives 80-300mm, can shoot things from afar like birdy. wink.gif

Olympus too? Any name of the model so far?

I'm considering between Olympus and Lumix, is it the right time to buy? Planning to buy 1 in early December.

I'm new, so I'm not exposed to upcoming rumors and news, please advice me.

hmmm...darkages...
pls do tell ur which r the 2 lenses that u r buying?

i hv seen the sweetest deal for twin len for olympus 14-42 with 17 f2.8 or more recently panasonic 14 pancake with 14-42 also...

if 1 of ur lense is a pancake, then go for it.
otherwise, the kit 14-42 is good enough

learn how to shoot 1st.
if u wan to shoot for general purpose, the 14-150 is really a much better choice.
cos u won't waste time changing lense and miss the moment.....

for the time being, jus get the 14-42.

What61: There are 3rd party flash such as Nissin, Metz and Yong Nuo. But Yong Nuo is manual flash, I thought of buying YN-460 II too since I won't use flash a lot. It costs around RM170 only.

d@odao: Try to search in LYN Photography Accessories market?

I am using Nissin di466..use it alot since i shoot event more in low light. It work great in TTl as welle xcept the only disadvantage is, it cant rotate Y axis ;/ only Z axis..i might wanna invest om Metz soon and keep Nissin as strobist smile.gif

Took the plunge. Got myself an EP3.

The standard sd card seem very slow in saving shoots, is this normal? Or do I have to invest in a faster sd card.
