QUOTE(hihihehe @ Nov 30 2013, 10:04 PM) IMO,I don't think Singapore is a best place to live. Career might be good but lifestyle is very boring. People are arrogant and selfish. The flat is boring and expensive. MRT is convenient and cheap but I dislike to carry many stuff into MRT especially when it's crowded. I also can't cook if I just renting a room and stay with landlord. Singapore is really a best place to live if you are rich or a country size like Malaysia. One man's meat another man's poison.Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder and billionaire sees it fit to renounce his US citizenship for Singapore citizenship. So has some other billionaires and the super-rich. Singapore is the new playground for the super rich. i don't understand why are Singaporeans deemed to be arrogant? I have been in Singapore close to 2 years and I do not seem to find the arrogance that has been depicted or maybe I have not seen Singapore enough.
It has been thrown around a fair bit, mind to share how this selfish / arrogance are shown? edit: I have lived in Sydney for 7 years and to me there are pros and cons in both places This post has been edited by witchx: Dec 2 2013, 05:26 PM |

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Dec 2 2013, 05:13 PM) Lived in Australia for 5 years and I love it there. There are pros and cons but what I like the most is work-life balance, bigger country for me to drive around, many events going on, able to see other cultures(be it Italian, Greek, Spanish, Korean, Japanese,Chinese, Hongkie, Indian, etc), amazing food(not the Asian food), etc. Public transport is consider OK for me as long as I don't have to transit around. Weekend is really a weekend where you can see everyone relaxing and kids running around but they never neglect their works during weekdays. Actually the sgd800k hdb is a isolated incident and its hdb very near the city. As such being a small island demand for space is high and supply is limited hence prices are expensive. But you can easily get a sub 300k 3 bedder hdb 25-30 min train ride from the city. No problem.I have been looking for job in Singapore and been there back and forth frequently in these 1 month. THe people there are selfish and arrogant, public transport is OK for me if I don't have to transit between bus and MRT, food is so-so only compare to Malaysia, rental is expensive, no where to go in a small island, etc. Everyone have their own lifestyle and for me Australia suits me. The weather could be horrible but at least they have a not-so-cold winter.People say the property is expensive in Australia but Singapore is not that cheap either. One HDB flat can cost more than SGD$800k and that building looks horrible. I can build a house+garage from scratch with a land for AUD$400-500k in Melbourne inner-suburb. My ex-colleague just built a 4 bedrooms house + garage from scratch for just $480k in Caulfield area and can take a 20 minutes train to CBD to work. Good things about both countries are you will have purchasing power if you work there. You can easily go travel with the strong currency and electronics are not that expensive. |

I have been in Singapore close to 2 years and I do not seem to find the arrogance that has been depicted or maybe I have not seen Singapore enough. Personally i feel australia working wise is good for entry level to lower management level because of the min wage and work life balance. But once you are in mid to senior level it becomes very difficult as pay is stagnant and taxes are high while opportunities are also limited. So think long term. Unless you want to be a senior exec forever. It has been thrown around a fair bit, mind to share how this selfish / arrogance are shown? edit: I have lived in Sydney for 7 years and to me there are pros and cons in both places One more thing i foresee is that all those fringe benefits like unemployment benefits, cheap education, gov sponsored healthcare will come to an end soon. Maybe in another 10-15years. This is because when the mining sector (which funds australia) will slow down drastically in the next couple of years as demand from china slows and competition bites |

Again i don't know what you mean by boring. I don't find living in a farm outskirts of major towns in australia as interesting at all. I've lived in a huge house where i have to drive 10 min just to buy groceries and its quiet and dark as hell at 8.00pm with barely anyone. If you are talking about Woodlands or Jurong then yes you may able to find it but the design is flat boring and most of the cheap HDB lcoated few bus stops away from MRT station. Btw it is much easier to save the money need for downpayment on a sgd 300k hdb in sg as compared to aud 300k house in aussie due to lower taxes and lower cost of living |

Too bad I don't have the PR or else I am happily busy designing the interior |

We have topics that discuss jobs in Singapore and Australia actively, so I take that these are the top 2 career destinations out of the country for Malaysia. In terms of Australia, as mentioned it is a hot spot, but what about New Zealand? We aren't getting much talks about New Zealand when it's relatively close to Australia as well. What makes Australia preferred than NZ?

QUOTE(Nemesis1980 @ Dec 2 2013, 03:09 PM) I've been living in Sydney for 2 years later moved to Perth for almost 5 months now. Living in KL for more than 10 years and been to Singapore for month and twice. Hi Nemesis. Just wondering if you have any positive experiences during your time in Sydney. Did you move to Perth because of job opportunities? I was thinking if I eventually get a PR for my accounting career (still contemplating), Sydney is on my list at this stage. |

Flying there with business/first class to US frequently is not a problem at all In Eduardo Saverin's case, that is not the case. He renounced US citizenship for Singapore to reduce capital gains taxes he would have paid after the Facebook IPO. So that angered the US. They tried to implement the Ex-PATRIOT Act to prevent people like Eduardo Saverin from entering the US again but the Act somehow died in its hearing stages. |

QUOTE(ssurrey @ Dec 2 2013, 07:19 PM) Rather than wasting time on having silly unproductive discussion on Australia VS Malaysia VS Singapore VS America, everyone here should spend more time and energy on helping to eradicate child prostitution. Then the world will be a better place otherwise this could be one of your kids. If you are genuinely interested in helping to eradicate child prostitution, you may get better response if posted on it's own thread.Posting here will only attract the attention of the ones who posted in this Australia thread. |

I live in the suburb 20-30 minutes away from the city, but the supermarket right next door closes at 10pm. There are 5 supermarket within my 1 km radius that closes between 10 to 12am and tons of restaurants that closes late as well. Like a couple of them just right opposite my place which we visit after 9 all the time. 8pm? You might still see people queuing to get food sometimes, how is that quiet?Btw it is much easier to save the money need for downpayment on a sgd 300k hdb in sg as compared to aud 300k house in aussie due to lower taxes and lower cost of living QUOTE(frontierzone @ Dec 2 2013, 10:22 PM) We have topics that discuss jobs in Singapore and Australia actively, so I take that these are the top 2 career destinations out of the country for Malaysia. What makes Australia preferred than NZ? A lot less in opportunities and wages. NZ is good for travelling, much harder to survive if you wanna work there. A lot of people come from NZ to get work cause they can't find it there. Not that bad if you like it there and manage to get a job, not for me though. Sydney is more similar to KL and it is not cold here at all. |

It has been thrown around a fair bit, mind to share how this selfish / arrogance are shown? edit: I have lived in Sydney for 7 years and to me there are pros and cons in both places Singaporean tend to step on your head 1st. You have to listen to them . Taking the lead in the conversation and treat you all stupid and they're the smartest in world. Later they'd say you all from third world country don't talk so much. They won't listen to your opinion, will seek your mistake and say it loud and clear and humilitating you. For anyone who wish to work in SG. Make sure you wear more 'pants' before they back fire your ass.... For me, Singapore definitely not my cup of tea. My friend asked me to work in a consultant firm in SG whereby he's totally workaholic. Slept in office for 3 days to rush work. Pay is good but payback to doctor i would say. Besides that, SG is a super rich playground. If don't mind living in pigeon hole, then it's ok. Pigeon hole ain't a place for me |
