Secure job first before moving. And for high earners in M'sia, your lifestyle will change even you secure 150k per annum job. Don't expect maid, grass cutter, plumber etc and learn how to do household activities yourself since no more cheap foreigners to depend upon. And when negotiating contract, make sure you check whether superannuation contribution is included or excluded in your package. At the end, you want to know how much disposable income you have after superannuation and income tax deduction.
*
Dear guys,

Thanks for your valuable advise. My planning is i'll be going there alone 1st for job hunting. Financially shall be ok in KL as my wife income can recoup all expenses in KL. As for me, I might starting with casual job 1st.
Yeah, agree with all the advise that there shall be huge change in lifestyle. However, when you a have a family, you won't have time clubbing around or shop everywhere as you'll spend most all of your time with the children which this might not happen in malaysia. Why? coz you'll work like hell which you spend most of your time with your boss and colleague more than family.
I've foreseen these 10 years ago and i let pass PR application twice even before the system change.
I stayed in sydney 10 years ago so coming back in malaysia is bad idea but however i managed to meet my wife.
For the sake of education, i don't mind to get my hands dirty for my children.
Most my friends are managers earning 10K/mth. They can't accept my decision either as they're having so many commitments in malaysia with houses and cars.
Well, this is something personal so no offend.
Some people even saying they're always happy hanging in mamak stall but i can tell ya when you're married, you don't really always hanging there. I'm speaking the truth.

Wow QS with exp to boot.
You should have no problems getting a job in Aus. As long as you are not too picky about salary and benefits.
It's quite a ncihe area plus you have the necessary experience.
But why Perth? Why not Sydney and/or Melbourne.
All the action is in Sydney and/or Melbourne. More job opportunities too

You got a job offer from Australian Bank or you're asking coa you're interested to look for one?

If you already got one then I would say its ok depending on what side your on (Commercial, retail or investment) and what function (Backroom, middle office or front office)

If you're asking becuase yr interested to find one then forget about it.
Banking in Australia is cut throat in employment with many functions outsourced to outside Australia due to cost issues. The remaining jobs are either localised (meaning they cannot outsource such as Relationship Management - in which case you will NOT be considered since you're NOT australian i presume) and/or specialised and its priority will always be given to Australians. In short your chances is equivalent of striking a lottery.
*
Melbourne is considerable but not sydney. Housing price is unbearable.
Well, I'm sticking with my purposes of going australia is to raise my children with quality time with them.
Sydney is a huge city which yeah lots of job opportunities. However, not the type of life i want. If heading there is with KL no difference.

low chance to secure job. HR will dispose the job application into bin when they see your address is not in australia.

find a job before move? look for non-australian company/boss to gain chance but still not easy

btw, job opportunity in IT sector in Australia is dropping now. helpdesk position being outsourced to asian country, not much desktop/technical support needed because of the automation in Windows 7/MOE and most of the computers are covered by warranty(from dell,hp,etc). lot of budget cutting this year and i can see there will be more worst on next year
*
I agreed. You won't learn how to swim if you don't jump into the river.
If really can't find a secured job in period of time, then come back lar. Nothing to lose. PR is just an option and you wont lose everything.
People tend to afraid almost everything without even try. Yes, courage comes 1st, but you'll never know what's ahead of you.
Life is a journey, LIVE IT!

If your reason for choosing Perth is mining then it shouldn't be too hard for you to land a high pay job provided that you are willing to do FIFO. And don't ask me what is that, google it.

But you won't be spending a lot of time with your family though, and that will probably defeat the purpose of you moving to OZ in the first place. But then again, QS might not need to spend too much time on site, but I don't know cause that is not my field.

Added on December 6, 2012, 7:57 am
IT ? Operations? Front end? Either one of it, good luck. New round of redundancy packages handed out each year. I'm in the process of encouraging my wife to volunteer for redundancy next year and do some small business instead.
*
I kind of agreed with u too. FIFO may beat the purpose of being there especially heading to kalgoorie or somewhere of nowhere while your family couldn't bring along. Mining shall come to an end in WA coz now more concentrating on Queensland which shall be largest mining the Oz history.
My profession mainly on construction but it'll be big hit too when recession came along and of course it won't lose out too.
Heard that some my friend working in mining kena goreng also who's engineer. Previously they have high pay but not zero income. But still he gained very good experience which i think he won't lose out too as there's plenty of vacancy for him maybe for him to move to Queensland.

Yea, FIFO for new migrate for a couple of years and it will be a lot easier to get some other job. I think a lot of people are doing that while earning a lot of money. For construction, I think you'll need to know the market as a QS right? Like housing for example, weatherboard house, using wood as the main partitions of the buildings and lots of gyprock rather then brick is very common here. But the story is probably different in Malaysia.

Or maybe some opportunities would be in preparing tax depreciation schedules, but then again, you'll need a lot more local market knowledge and experience to know the material and price + historical prices. Is that right?

Apartments in Melbourne are saturated, so if you wants to go into project building / developer, I think Sydney is a better choice. As far as I read, Sydney is probably the only city that is under supplied right now (in terms of dwellings for residential), so you might want to consider that.

I'm surfing a lot in somersoft and homeone forum recently. There should be some thread on project home or developers that might be useful to you.
*
Hey, thanks. Your help come in handy.
I managed to contact my friends who's being working as my profession for years. As what he told me tax depreciation is something new to malaysia as this only apply to australia due to their tax is sky high. Suppose this shall be done by accountant or tax officer but they dont hv such knowledge. So this falls to be our baby. Well, i did learn this before during uni but that was 10 yrs ago which doesn't imply in malaysia so don't bother at 1st. Now, i may thinking of taking a course to gain this for me to have better knowledge. Research a few jobs and tax depreciation report can charge around AUD2k to 3k per report. Think about if you assessing 10 report would be 20k - 30k which is good $$.
Saw their sample report which is very easy to do, only need to identify the property value and renovation work attached and submit to tax dept. This shall regain 20-30% tax deduct. Of course some paper works need to be done but i think even SPM leaver can learn also.
Besides that, all the work nature are the same only the software they used and the pricing shall be different which this has to gain from Oz.
Australian experience?yeah i know most employers going to reject some1 with this reason but without a start, where's the australia experience?

Sounds great, having a friend in the same industries passing you the knowledge are good stuff smile.gif Good to know that you already knew the options available and I am not pointing to the wrong direction either smile.gif.  If you move to Sydney I, I can be one of your first client, that is assuming I can convert my current place to an investment property within this two years ...

Added on December 6, 2012, 11:34 amAnd yea, the other the depreciation schedule is a good business because of negative gearing, which is again unique to Australia and one of the reasons Australian experience does matter in this case.
*
Yeah why not? Untill i get AIQS members, shall looking forward for this opportunity.
Not afraid telling you that half of my secondary schoolmates & uni mates migrated australia & new zealand within this 10 years.
Well, i came back alone to malaysia thinking of expanding my contractor business but end up whole company being took over. sigh*
Life ain't easy though and life is short. Foreseen malaysia politics turmoil which unstable. Economy doesnt look good and not progressing. Now the worst is scandals emerge and no one prosecute to date. SG dollar is almost same as NZdollar. RM is getting smaller with huge money laundering within.
I don't mind to pay high tax but i need to see something being done. Yes, i paid thousands tax but i didn't get anything from government but with scandal news flying around.
Malaysia has too many SME business which doesn't contribute too much to our economy.

Ok let me say something.

1. You said housing prices in Sydney is unbearable but did you know cost of living in Perth is equally as high if not higher?
2. Melbourne is also a huge city. I honestly think in terms of competitiveness, Sydney and Melbourne are generally the same. If you want a slower lifestyle, Adelaide and Brisbane might be a better option. With redundancies going on everywhere in Australia now, it's competitive EVERYWHERE.
3. Don't take this personally but you need to improve your English before you go to Australia. You have very broken written English and I would assume your spoken English would be worse. Australians tend to look down on foreigners who don't speak proper English. It's harsh but it's the truth here.
*
why thank you for your comment and feedback. i tend to write as simple as i can.
1) Yes i know Perth is experiencing inflation in past few years. Mining has done alot on that.
2) I think job opportunity 1st then only choose which city to settle. Adelaide is good but activity bit slow. Brissy sounds good
3) Oh yah. my broken engrish making me unusual and unique lar i guess. IELTS still manage band 7 lor... rclxm9.gif (no offend...hehe)

I don't see KL stated anywhere in the following list.

Yes. Money is important but doesn't define the quality of life.  icon_idea.gif Sometimes the self-sustaining life is much happier than a millionaire living in a corporate world under capitalism system. Anyone can have trucks of cash in Zimbadwe or Angola, but they cant even find a doctor when they contracted with Malaria.

I fully agreed. My dad work in sudan O&G. Pay is high but health deteriate. Everyday goat soup and beans. Vegetable very expensive. No fruits.
Going out need mercenaries escort. TV program all Negros. Can't understand language. You got money but dunno where to spend. 2 years cannot tahan then come back

Not even in the past few years. It's more or less been up there with Melbourne and Sydney in terms of cost of living all along. But yes, the recent mining boom has definitely taken its toll on them.

Yes, you are right to let job opportunities dictate where you will settle down. If you get a job in Brissy then just head there. If you get a job in Orange then just go. That's the best suggestion for you at the moment if you plan to migrate to Australia for good.

Hahaha unfortunately, broken English is not unusual or even unique in Australia. Let's just say that if you didn't score at least a 7 on your IELTS, you shouldn't even come to Australia. Hahaha. By the way, it's no "offence". =)
*
You've read my mind! I like that.
Well, my friend we're not from native english speaking country but we have skills which contribute something to that country.
I mean speaking in different language shall give you bonus. Language can be learn and whatever accent you want to add in, like 1-2 years? But skills is something which might take longer. If you have language but without skills, then you'll have job hunting difficulties. Same goes to language.
Guess what, my housemate was from Chinese school and his english is almost medium low level. Today, he proves something that he's a director in an Oz company in sydney. We shall give a clap to this Johorian guy.

as long as you are earning Oz$, you will be fine..
buying power here is high..

Fully agreed on this, I was in sydney for 2 years and the rental is extremely high. 2 bedroom apartment (non luxurious) at downtown will cost you 550 - 600/week. The rest i think is ok, food & clothing and some IT gadgets it think still reasonable. In the sense of dollar to dollar, I guess if you want to own a house, i think you still can buy a property within 30 km radius to city with 600k to 800k budget.
Compare to malaysia, this is totally different stories. A house could easily shoot up to 2mil to 3mil.

since you are staying here in Oz, im sure you are enjoying.. i mean in terms of buying power.. you dont have to save few months salary (back in MY) to get branded stuff.. like for myself, i need to think twice to get an expensive bag in MY, here i dont really need to do that..and its affordable..and im not converting at all.. stopped converting when u r in a foreign country when u r earning there..

- public transport to me is cheap, im paying $115 for 4 weeks in Melb Zone 1, unlimited access to bus, tram and train for 4 weeks..
- electricity comes every quarter, and my bill is about $450 and divide by 3months, about $100+ monthly which is almost the same back in MY (my electricity bill is RM100+ per month in KL)
- parking it really depends, i work in CBD, i can park for $14 whole day on early bird rate.. (enter by 10am exit after 4pm)
- petrol depends on which day u pump, its cheaper on wed/thur as suggested by locals here..but it also depends..
- tax is high, i agree, but at least u can see something being done by the government, which is better than MY.. (i cant give u examples, as i dun see anything significant that benefits me yet, but for families with kids, they do get benefits)

yes, i agree, dun expect bed of roses here in Oz, i do have friends that suffer and went back.. if you are single and already have a stable job and good income in MY, you will def suffer here, but if you move due to kids education, then its a different story, coz u will sacrifice so ur kids got better education, and ur family will have benefits..

btw.. i can save $1.5k fortnightly..but im not doing that every fortnight, coz im spending more coz stuff are cheap here :-)

just my own experience...
*
Well, if you're earning Oz dollar, your expenditure power will be high.
As what Annielee said, sometimes the grass isn't greener out there. However, for me, for the sake of children's future and education, i would prefer sacrifice myself on some personal hobbies.
I dunno how many of you here are singles or married. If you're family man, your mind will be different.
If you compare the earnings there, buying a house is not an issue there coz major services and facilities has been 'subsidies' under your paid tax. At least you could see something from your tax but not in malaysia. I paid tax and get nothing here...budget 2013 is totally dissappointing

*
Well, if you're single, yes, you'll feel lonely everyday. Same situation like me 10 years ago.
But, after i'm working in KL for 10 years, my life was miserable as Malaysia economy performance very bad, inflation and the worst houses and cars need to be loan more than 5 years.
I've been working stressfully for 10 years.
If you intend to come back here, you MUST start your own business / family business. Malaysia is a SME country. Our worker union is weak.
If not, you better stay back.

Except for WA, we're the highest paid workers around. Freshies easily get 100k. Even for my cushy office job I'm paid around the same.

IT is a dying industry so if you're into computers, this isn't the place for it.

But if you have engineering, hands on technical skills, geological skills among others, its easy money. Most of us get 200 dollars a day bonus for call out. Free phone and internet. Free makan.

If you're on a FIFO rotation, even better better. You'll easily do 30 to 50 percent more than most people. If you're into the next big thing, which is unconventional resources and are qualified, just pit companies against one another, they'll pay.
*
Are you sure freshies getting 100k?? As far i know the highest freshies can get is averagely 65K - 80K
What industry is that?

I was paid 80 as a freshie.

Now add 100 bucks a day (200 once you're done with grad program) for field bonus and say you're given a 15/15 roster. That's 98k easy. Not inclusive of other allowances.

I was in sydney before. Which suburb are you allocate to? At least i could recommend you some of the places.
I think you should stay near to your workplace, which around 10km radius.
Since you're saying the workplace is a suburb, i think you can get yourself a car which is very cheap there.
Sydney is like KL, sometimes there's traffic everywhere (of course not as serious as KL).

http://www.realestate.com.au will give you an idea of how much you'll pay for rent depending on where you are.

http://www.coles.com.au/Shop-Online.aspx will give you an idea of what you need to pay for groceries etc.

http://www.131500.com.au/ is Sydney's public transport info to find out monthly pass prices, how long it takes to go from your work to home etc.

Sydney is expensive, do a bit of homework because only you know what you spend every month and what you consider to be a minimum.
*
Well my friend, i never go buy groceries in coles. Coles is like 'cold storage' supermarket in KL. Super expensive. You can either shop for grocers in chinatown or BILO which will be far cheaper. Woolworth also not too bad.
Rental of course depends on the suburb. If you're renting in north sydney is like Bangsar & Mont Kiara. Of course the rental is expensive. This is very subjective. That's why i'm asking him where is the workplace. If he bought a car there, then he can seek further place for cheaper rental.
What you're saying is right, sydney is an expensive city to live but that apply to CBD. Some suburb is cheaper than you expect.
I lived in inner west sydney before, which there's lots of asian groceries you can buy. Even you can get bak kut teh (A1), maggi mee, indomie...etc.
No worries bro. , have time you can shop nike warehouse for really cheap original shoes/clothing. I bought 5 pairs nike shoes total less than AUD150 with nice design.
Purchasing property is really expensive in sydney. I think if you're working there hard enough or request promotion or after 2 years getting PR,you can jump ship to other firm for higher pay, i think should be no problem getting a property there.
Don't be surprise by high tax, competitiveness or other discouragement. Believe me, you'll enjoy there.

I've never lived overseas before so it's very difficult to foresee my expenses.
Thanks

Anybody knows whether I'll be required to take driving lessons in order to drive?
*
Well, I think this a good start for yourself. As mentioned by others, your medical coverage is far way important.
80k won't make you rich but think about the future. You'd have extensive working experience prospect in your résumé in future. As long your salary could cover most of your expenses, i think your progression to higher level is expected.

Newington is near Homebush, which is quite near to Olympic park. Plenty of public transport. I think you can easily settle down. Plenty of malls and groceries store around.

3k for insurance is steep man.
Thanks. It's not just about the money, but I think it's just not healthy for me to stay in msia. I need to sacrifice too much of my time just to survive, and I'll probably miss seeing my children grow up.

I missed out my eldest daughter childhood. I worked and stay office till 2nd day for few times just to put food on the table. I always encourage people if you got chance, just give it a shot.
Not to say you're traitor or not love your country. This is very personal decision. Some people do well in their job overseas but some not. It's very depend on your working attitude and character.
I paid tax, nothing benefit here for family of 4 but only miserable life. To find extra cash, either you got strong rich family background with money backup or either you got out selling insurance or MLM. This is the scenario of Malaysia

There's additional which KL don't have. They'll rob you like nobody business. When we're in sydney near Redfern, we actually fight with aborigines for the reason they wanna rob us. 4 of us can't even fight them coz 1 of them is damn huge (2 person size). The other 2 is same size as asian. Well, we managed to escape and report to police. The police told us we've been lucky to stay alive. WTF?!?
Well, wat i can say is sydney you have to stay away from 'The Block' near city centre.
Druggies and drunken people everywhere. Somewhere like chow kit.
We went to Pitt Street during midnite for a drink, wat it used to be beautiful scene during the day, turn to be beggars/homeless scavenging around.
I think others shouldn't be an issue, enjoy the beach and weather.
People wise...hmm...i've yet to overcome any racism there but however, 'mind of your own business' type. If you like KL, this would be the place

I'll let you know once I get everything confirmed.

Quite confused with their property type. What's the difference between a 'unit' and an apartment?
*
Avoid Redfern (aborigines, highly dangerous, even you're walking a group of people), Cabramatta (Vietnamese, gangsterism)
I would recommend some areas like Hurstville (Chinese area), Rockdale, Leichardt (Italian) , Stanmore, Petersham etc...
Mostly the accommodation near to train station is always shitty area coz those areas where the druggies/drunken people hanging around as they easily commute to your place by train.
Above are the areas which i found suitable to live in. Nice old classic building at inner west which you'll find many interesting things there.
Hurstville is a nice place where you can get malaysian ingredients even with bak kut teh. Rental is not cheap too...

checked numerous times, no visa is suitable other than the working holiday visa which isn't quite what i am looking for. the key here seems to be whether i can get sponsorship. so i need to rephrase my question, what's the probability of me getting a sponsorship from an architectural firm? i know its difficult to get architectural job in big cities like Melbourne and Sydney, but I've heard Perth is more likely to offer jobs.

I have friends who husband & wife are architect in melbourne. However, they decide to move back to Singapore to work. Reason?not sure, as they have a descent job there. I guess they're opening firm in singapore.
My advise is just try to apply for employer sponsorship if there is chance.
Search for recruitment agencies, who knows you might be the lucky one
