Hello, what are the chances of a 6 years experienced engineer with a MBA to get a decent job in Australia? Degree and Masters qualifications are from UK universities. I know times are bad but i'm just keeping my options open. Perhaps my first choice now would be Aus/Sg and next choice is UK/US.

As far as I can tell, no local experience = tough.

hi all,

my wife (who has a general bachelor degree but no working experience) is eager to settle in Australia for a few years (she is 40)

reading through a bit in the forum, i guess it will be a no go but i see a lot of people are saying nursing is in high demand in Australia and would easily get in

1. is this situation still valid?
2. if yes, if she graduate from nursing school with no experience, can get a job there? or experience is a must?
3. any idea where to ask or where to look for more details?
4. can really survive with just a nursing job?

thanks for your assistance

Hello.. I am just sharing what I heard from my fren who is in healthcare. Apparently there is an over supply of nurses here. I guess they have shortages of experienced nurses.
There are a lot of inexperienced nurses/doctors that could not get a job. I am not sure to what extend how true is this situation for nurses. Please research well before making any decision ya.. All the best and hope your migration journey will be successful!

I know a bit. Pubs and clubs in all states except WA have slot machines. The smaller ones open til 11pm, some up to 4am. Casinos, 1 in every state (2 or 3 in QLD) open 24x7.
To work with slots u need to get a RSG (Responsible Service of Gaming) license. One day only. Then u can start work.
With casinos, they advertise online n there is a group interview. Have to be quick w mental arithmetic. Once approve they will train u to deal different games. A few years back Crown Melbourne paid $27 ph if u knew a few games ie backpack, baccarat, poker etc)

With casinos sometimes u hv to work d graveyard shift.

Crown Melb provides meals, uniforms n discounted parking.

Thanks for the info thumbup.gif
I came across their job advertisement sometime back and the free food part got me interested tongue.gif
The post is only for table games though and dunno if can land a management role for the long run.

Just studying all the possible career options out there before making my move next year.
My engineering degree seems like no value based on most of the online discussions haha

Anyone here working or familiar with the gaming/casino industry in Australia? How's the environment like?

A fren's fren work in crown as a dealer. To become a dealer, you will need to attend training provided by them, but u will be paid throughout the training period. He say the job is quite easy.. No need to use brain. The uniform will be dry wash for u daily I think .. Meals gym n parking provided or subsidised. If u know ppl there, they are quite open with hiring people on referral basis for dealers position only.

I did try to apply for other position before through referral basis but didn't get 😔

What engineering field?
Yes in Sydney.
Construction industry is quite stable here with a lot of residential projects as well as rail upgrading.
It's not that difficult if you don't mind working as a site engineer.
I myself find it easy to land a job here as I can speak Mandarin and English.
Not sure about design engineer though.

I'm from oil and gas. Clearly oil price drop isn't helping with current situation so I'm looking to change field too.

really? Construction in Sydney area? Care to shed a bit of light?

I'm seeing myself moving to Aussie mid/3rd quarter 2016 after Visa is granted. Yes it's a deep dive into wide ocean I know.

Yea I don't mind working on site, in fact I've been working on desk job and would be fine to look for some site experience.

The residential market is tapering off, so I wouldn't bank on it.

Transport infrastructure project on the other hand has a chance to become really busy in Sydney with the light rail + Sydney Metro work happening. On the other states, if the funding comes through, transport infrastructure will grow as well. There is a steady growing trend with buildings as well.

In fact, the transport infrastructure is currently desperate for good people. Quite a lot of people I know transferred from Malaysia and UK to deliver the transport work.

What is the average pay of CEng for construction there before and after tax? Upgrade to CPEng should be no problem but take some time. Only thing is no local experience... Roughly 10 years experience.

It's not CPEng that's worth the money here, but the state certification like RPEQ, RPB and BPB. Assuming decent experience and technical skills, you're looking at around $130-140k annually pre-tax + super for >10 years. Some companies offer profit sharing as well.

I honestly think local experience is overrated unless it's a decent sized project. Small residential, office or fit-out work don't mean much.

Is it common for Aust construction or consultancy company to offer expat package for family relocation, job for the wife and school for the kids? Some local experience will be good but I think it can be picked up quite fast.

You'll need to be at Executive level to get an expat package. Most hires from overseas will get relocation assistance and allowance.

Hi I am interested in working in Australia. I have a local degree and a MBA from a local uni. I have five years exp with a large local financial institution. I don't mind starting from scratch, entry level but I would like to be in a relevant field (Teaching, Lecturing, Banking Training).

Is it possible to obtain a job before migrating? Or do all applications start only from the moment you reach Aus? Sorry but I am very green about this. Am trying my best to read through all responses in this thread but would be grateful if I can be given a head start.

If you're applying speculatively, then you'll need to be in Australia + hold a valid working visa.

If you have a particularly set of skills in demand, then they are happy to sort out your working visa for you. This second route is normally not advertised.
