Hi there, I would like to ask if there's anyone who's currently working in Spore.

I am currently looking for an engineering intern job based in Singapore for my training purposes and would love to get opinions and advices from fellow lowyat-ian.

I am still looking for companies whereby I hope they do accept interns from Malaysia. :/

are my chances of getting an intern pretty small?
*

You'll need a work pass to work in Sg, even if you're just interning. It's a matter of whether the hiring company wants to do the paperwork for you and whether they have reached their limits for foreigners. My company hires lots of finance interns but never from overseas. Too much hassle for too short a period and too little contribution. No shortage of top students from local unis applying too, which makes it even harder to justify the time and effort for a foreign intern.

Please prepare 500 or more, they charge you some $$/month if your account have less than 500.

for me i believe it is good to have 2 bank accts... 1 from a local bank 1 foreign... and how i choose the banks are based on what their cc offers

local bank you can opt for: dbs / uob

foreign bank: citibank / stan chart

these are good combos

Try to get a posb/dbs account. Their ATM machine are like mushroom everywhere. Very convenience.

For matters regarding JB, can pm Lester1987 a.k.a The JB King.

If I were you, I would use Maybank SG or CIMB SG to bank in my salary, and have a corresponding MY account in JB. You can use the Sg ATM card to withdraw cash in My where most of your spending will be. Saves you the trouble of changing money. Having accounts with the same bank on both sides allows you to move very large amounts of money across the causeway within the same day if necessary, very conveniently and securely, and straightaway use it to pay large bills in My using ibanking as well. Both MBB and CIMB give better savings interest rates than local banks, free cheques and credit cards with more promotions if used in My.

Then if you want an account for emergency use when you're in Sg, open one at the UOB near your workplace. You can use internet banking to transfer money into it. It's free. I also like Std Chartered because their ibanking can pay credit card bills issued by other banks. That means I can get cc from other banks and never have visit their branch or atm nor mail any cheques to pay. After receiving the promotions and waiting for the lock in period to expire, just call and cancel.

Thanks for the informative posts guys. I forgot to mention relevant details like the names of MY banks that I have accounts with and monthly transfer/autobilling for my family back in hometown but thanks again, I found the solution to my needs.

To serve as the reference for future searches/questions, I have 2 MY bank accounts, one of which is Maybank. So I'll be opening an account with Maybank SG since it is convenient in terms of location (found branches near my workplace in SG and my rented place in JB) and usability (the ability to do same-day transactions (ibanking etc) and withdraw cash from both MY and SG with the SG ATM card means I can leave my MY ATM card with my family in hometown). As for a credit/debit card with better perks than Maybank's cards, I'll apply later in a few months' time when I'm able to better evaluate my favourite haunts, locations etc in SG.

Thanks again guys.

For DBS/POSB saving plus account, you gotta maintain an average of 1K per day or you'll be charged $2.

anyone here interested to retired in SG?

I was like shock when my fren tat day told me he is willing to take up Singapore citizenship... LoL

He told me what for wanna retire in Malaysia if the country is so unsafe nowadays? He told me yes, when all your savings are converted to RM, you will retire comfortably in Malaysia... but what for? You can even be damn kao rich if you retire in Indonesia, Vietnam, China or India after 55 yrs but these countries are unsafe!!!

He told me, yes... you can buy a BMW or even a lambo when you work in SG and retire in MY but you will never ever be able to drive safe and sound just like in SG. Once you being injured, lost your love ones etc, that is.. your retirement plan changed... all these years, your retirement plan will gone.

After hearing his thoughts, now only I understand... the most important is still SAFE... I dun mind buying a lambo here despite having no highways for me to speed 300km/h but at least I dont need to worry about highways robbers.

Having said that, SG still have good education, medical facilities (even better than Malaysia), good infrastructures etc... so why worry about retiring in SG when MY is so damn kao unsafe and corrupted???

and also they favour the Malays than the chinese in MY....

I would retire in SG if I rich enough. Many true blue Singaporean wanted to retire in SG but you know they had a hard time adjusting their living standard against ever increasing cost and FT. Their minister had told them to seek MY doctors and JB eldercare if no money. So you can choose to retire in SG say if you can buy your SG plated lambo.

I know I am a person who can feel the different when I cross the causeway. I don't need any safety report and statistic. I had bought my retirement home in MY and continue to live a Malaysian life.

I guess when I decide to retire, safety will not be my concern. By then I should have live 'safely' long enough. I want to be free and enjoy good time before knock off. MY is a Boleh place for those who have their own way of life.

It's only numbers I got for the years I live in SG. Spending times and health for income figures and comparing price of items such as house and cars. Went for expensive holidays but not as enjoys when I climb hills with MY friends during sch days. So I know I am a person who won't enjoy a lambo on SG road (I admit I don't have the money to buy a lambo).

soon a hdb and then in jb, going to retire my wife to take my kids in 5 year time to jb
then hit retirement age , sell the hdb and go back retire in ipoh
my worst case scenario, if dun hit the c-level in 5-7 years

Better not come now. I heard several Investment Banks are firing people due to the impending uncertainty in Europe and US. Here is not like in M'sia. There is no local demand to "shield" against economic slowdown. SG is brutal in this way. They hire and fire at will. No recourse. Better stay low for the time being

I dare say if you have the money to buy a lambo (in my or sg doesn't matter), you have the financial wherewithal to retire practically anywhere. With that kind of money, Sg is just as exciting & affordable as My and My will be just as safe and systematic as Sg.

For you and I however, it's a matter whether you're driven by your retirement or your children's future. With the limited money we have, My is simply more bang for the buck despite the safety and racial concerns. S$10k per month pension in My will get you a lot of safety and "cooperation" from other races but in Sg, you are barely above middle class. However your children's education and future is better in Sg. Or you let your children study in Sg, and by the time you retire, you do your thing and they do theirs.

probably it's $$$ factor....i have 2 friends converted coz:

1) wanted to have another one month of maternity leave. sweat.gif
2) can buy BTO
3) can get baby bonus
4) can get housing grant

they made the decision when:

1) after a year got married.
2) just delivered baby.

By the time i retire
SG population could be like 8mils already.
Pretty sure im not gonna retire in an already overcrowded place
and Im keen to keep my intention of staying here just for the
money. Perhaps i will change my mind in the future, time will tell.
