You might want 2 upgrade yourself towards being a certified welder. When i was a "Subi", we had contract welders come to singapore from the states to do specialized precision welding and those guys and gals made around USD 200 upwards an hour for their services and it was money well spent for that particular application.

Or you could do Hyperbaric welding, you basically work around 4 hours-6 hours a day and get paid around 6k for a junior welder of that class and it just get higher depending on the welding requirements, location, depth and environmental conditions.

Actually am very interesting to join this line of work, but too bad am at a different industry, project engineer for process gas piping for semi cond industry, doesn't have the time to learn all this at all, plan to read up the ASMI B31.3 Process Piping but dunno is it useful or not.

Besides that my salary, I would say is overpaid compared to my technical knowledge, so kind of difficult to join oil and gas industry. Any advice?
