Samba 101

A lot of people talk but never done Samba. Here is how for Himedia.

#1. Settings/Other/Samba...enable

This starts the service only...but it got nothing to do yet

#2. Launch HiDLNA.apk (my q16 or similar for others)...select sharing, then select "drives" &/ folders to share...

Edit: PS... I read q10 pro uses happycast & not HiDLNA, and mount only sd1...so need to investigate further... sad.gif

Himedia uses this system app to manage sharing...this tells Samba what to do....you're now done !!! laugh.gif

Now you can use Windows/Mac/Linux/Android/iPhone to read from & write to the box. PCs have native client built-in, phones need to make sure the file manager got "remote" or "network" function.

My earlier example was using phone to access box via Wi-Fi @ 192.168.0.103...thru Samba.

Note all devices must be connected to the same network ip/subnet...usually not a problem with most people. If you have more than one router network or run DDNS...you know what to do laugh.gif

thank you and thanks to AVFAN for your invaluable advice. It all works now. However, there in no HiDLNA.apk for the q10pro I think it's already built in. The trick, strangely enough, to get the networking working was after enabling samba which i did long ago was:

enabling the networking password (and then disabling if you don't want to use it then disable and then enable samba.

seems wierd but it worked for me, i have 2 q10 pros so i followed that religiously and all 3 now can file share/network.

Interesting, why 3 Q10 Pro? In diff rooms/houses?

Or you like it so much that .... Ha.

Your best point and your worst point on Q10 Pro?

Thanks.

Good thumbup.gif ... I read it now uses Happycast that starts automatically instead of HiDLNA. Glad it's working for you.

Good that it worked.

Media center using LAN samba with q10pro is easier than all previous models.

Even better performance if u use 5ghz wifi as said by jayceeooi.

You also get to play everything via native player which can handle just about any video or audio available now... 4k, 60hz, 10 bit, hevc, hdr, hd audio, dtsx, ddatmos.

Actually, the price of himedia being higher than most others is precisely due to that - a good media center with a powerful native player. And that is why i dun understand why some people insist on playback with kodi or vlc or mx! laugh.gif

One more tip for q10pro users...

Es file explorer is not a good file manager for android5 and higher as some new restrictions now put in place. Use another one for easy file management, transfers, deletion, copy, etc.

I use file manager asus, can get from playstore. This one is super easy to use, easy upload and download between pc and box, incl the hdd inside and all usb attached hdd's.

what is TS?
*** TS = Transport Stream one of the many video formats. Google and see.

66gb... is that a uhd4k 2160p video? as in 3840 x 2160?
*** 1920 * 1080 at 25 frames /s

if yr tv OR avr is not 4k, u will not get video. no downgrading.
*** TV is only HD, bought some 6 yrs ago. I have tried some sound and video test programs from Kodi, eg #6 as highlighted below. I can play it in my Q5 Pro and HD TV though it is 10 bit color and UHD file. My old TV does not have 10 bits color or UHD features and yet I can play it. Think there is an automatic downgrade to what the TV can handle.
Attached Image

Don't tell me my TV I bought 6 years is 10 bits color and UHD which I am not aware of! Ha. 10 bits and UHD were in their research/development phase then.

what is AOK?
***  AOK = OK = fine = all right
That is, I can play the #6 UHD TS file.

newer PCs/monitors can take 1440p, i.e. 2560x1440.
*** My PC monitor is about 12 yrs old now and still can play the 66 GB TS file using VLC on my PC. Think there is also an automatic quality downgrade to suit the monitor.

that other TS file on kodi in the same box, same tv, it works - does it work when playing with q5pro native player?
what resolution is it?
***  Maybe what I said earlier is confusing.
Can play #6 TS file above (0.6 GB)
Cannot play the other big TS file (66GB). Have tried the Kodi default player & DVD player (with sound but no picture). Using VLC apps, got picture and sound but breaking. Not watchable.

1280×720 (HD, 720p)
1920×1080 (FHD, Full HD, 2K 1080p)
2560×1440 (QHD, WQHD, Quad HD, 1440p)
3840×2160 (UHD, Ultra HD, 4K, 2160p)
7680×4320 (FUHD, Full Ultra HD, 8K, 4320p)

Kodi is only good if you want 4k & 5.1 right? I haven't been using it since I'm only FHD/HD & 2.1.

BTW... Asus File Manager's PC Transfer uses FTP and it's many times faster than SMB aka Samba...my box runs 3rd party ftp instead of samba....

You mean whether Q5 Pro is designed to play TS? Yes, I have checked with my supplier, says Q5 Pro can play TS file, which it does with the 0.6 GB TS file.

But why the no picture problem with the 66 GB TS file? Suggest not all TS files are alike.

TS file require muscle player to run.

Normally TS file are big.

Use to have it. But don't want it anymore. Doesn't different much the quality compare mkv.

It's the encoding parameters, or video & audio pairing mismatch or container that usually throws things off...

Software players are more forgiving...but limited by decoding power...

Yeah...TS files are not equal...

i don't know as i don't use kodi for playback at all. no need! biggrin.gif

but i hv run some tests to be aware what's happening, more so with kodi17 which will demand box makers to do a lot with their own firmwares to play higher grade video and audio files in future.

ok, if u want to find subs, the good news is himedia has for q10pro (and q5pro, i believe), introduced a WRAPPER in the firmware. use that for own playback with kodi by setting it to "set to wrapper player". with that, it wraps yr stream and send it to the native player to play, bypassing kodi player. it works, incl hd auido. now, this setting will not work with online kodi streams. need to set wrapper to "set to kodi player". it's something i think himedia will have to fix, a new issue with kodi17 which is very new.

TS as if m2ts?

i think u r talking of a 4k upscaled m2ts file.
q5pro can play it, just that yr tv cannot.
time to change tv! tongue.gif

it may play on some players/monitors but they won't be handle a true uhd4k file.
this one i have:
2160p 4K UltraHD BluRay x265 (HEVC 10bit) DTSHD-MA 7.1 -DDR.mkv (66.48 GB)
- fails to play on pc, q16... but plays nice on q10pro.
- of course need 4k AVR and 4K tv too.

let us know the details of the file, we can comment further.

Bitrate...

Thanks.

With the breaking picture quality, the bitrate question came to mind, maybe my system including the network is not fast enough. I did a check the other night and summary as below.

66 GB video 37 Mbps bitrate
0.6 GB video 51 Mbps bitrate

(bitrate from the DETAILS section)

Even at a higher bitrate, I can play the 0.6 GB file without any problem while having problem with the 66 GB file.

AVI, MPS etc files have different bitrates depending on the picture/sound quality (frame rate etc) and I have not come across a time where I cannot play an AVI, MP3 file on my Q5 Pro.

FYI, getting the 66 GB TS file to play is academic now. I did it to test my Q5 Pro and I can play the 0.6 GB TS file. So, not an issue to dwell on for me. Next time if there is a choice of file fomat, I will avoid TS! Ha.

just get a 4k hdr tv, set q5pro to 2160p 60hz, 4:2:0 10 bit.

u can then get any video... it will play nicely, smooth and deep colors. tongue.gif

It's not TS... It's how it was ripped & encoded...

Can happen to any file-format when not done properly.

No worries mate.

Just for info, hardware decoding relies on a combo set/range of audio and video codec, if your combo is wrong or encoded in suboptimal parameters, you get these problems. Software decoding is more forgiving hence vlc can play. It was designed to play all kinds of codec.

I have a wdtv live and this issue is even worse due to limited range of codec suport and codec combo. Some files I had to stream from PC running serviio (ftp) & ffmpeg (decode/re-encode on the fly) in order to watch via wdtv on the big screen. At that time, mp4, h264, etc was gaining momentum...the syndicates haven't standardized on ripping/encoding parameters so now & then I get problematic files...they played well in the PC just not on the wdtv laugh.gif
