Just for info, hardware decoding relies on a combo set/range of audio and video codec, if your combo is wrong or encoded in suboptimal parameters, you get these problems. Software decoding is more forgiving hence vlc can play. It was designed to play all kinds of codec.
I have a wdtv live and this issue is even worse due to limited range of codec suport and codec combo. Some files I had to stream from PC running serviio (ftp) & ffmpeg (decode/re-encode on the fly) in order to watch via wdtv on the big screen. At that time, mp4, h264, etc was gaining momentum...the syndicates haven't standardized on ripping/encoding parameters so now & then I get problematic files...they played well in the PC just not on the wdtv
