to all sifu here,
not really related to unifi, but i need your opinion.if anyone still remember,on my previous post i mention that my tv is in living room while i plan to put modem and all the unifi related stuff in my room.since the living room to my room is quite far, around 100cm away,i don't think i'll connect the iptv to my tv in living room using LAN cable.my idea is,i wanted to use my computer monitor as 'tv'.which means i'll connect monitor to the iptv.but my monitor don't have HDMI port nor the DV-I port.so,can i buy the D-SUB to RCA cable to connect the iptv and monitor together?

u just need to buy/get a switch that says "Managed Switch" .. prefer to have the word Fully/Full Managed Switch.. or a

"Web Smart Gigabit Switch" for tplink.. not sure whey their managed switch in divided into websmart n manage...

another keyword to search is "Supports Port-Based VLAN and IEEE 802.1Q Tag VLAN " on the switch...

please know as we dont know the product we do nt know how the configuration will be.. it will be up to you... to fiddle it urself..

regarding ur IPTV.. possible for SDTV but not for HDTV as i think unifi iptv channel is 8mbits top... and hdtv is already taking 8mbits

Ok, let say I bought the full manage switch 16 ports installed on the 2nd floor but I have another small 5 port gigabit switch downstair in living room supporting few devices. Do I need to change that switch as well to full manage 5 port switch? Thanks.

If I'm not wrong, the custom firmware is still not release anywhere yet, still in testing stage, so I believe those units out there are still stock, NOT for UniFi yet.

I'm probably one of them who is helping to test out based on my Huawei HG850a BTU, need more time to play around further and feedback to ASUS engineer, so please be patient ! nod.gif

For those who sincerely want to help out testing, you may email me and take it offline: klseet@gmail.com

Please take note I don't own the firmware and I don't sell the product either, you buy & use it completely at your own risk. smile.gif

My whole intention is to source for as many alternatives as possible rather being forced & limit by TM on just 1 particular supplier with just 1 particular model only.
I personally don't welcome such no-value yet dirty monopoly tactic, I simply don't like to be told what meat to eat only shakehead.gif

Hope others will also try to source and share experiences around ! icon_rolleyes.gif

For those who are still using the ugly stock router , here are some tips on making it somewhat stable

1. Disable Firewall (yep , both SPI inbound and outbound)
I've found that that by disabling the firewall , the router runs faster and heavy downloads no longer causes it to hang. However it comes with a heavy cost - being naked in the Internet. Software Firewall can come into play such as Zone Alarm

2. Disabling 802.11n and making it 802.11b/g only
802.11n just does not work well at all. Ive noticed that some of my ancient devices such as my Palm handheld (it only has a 802.11b card) does not work with the router at all (despite setting it to WEP). After making it 802.11b/g , things are just bit faster when connecting from WiFi

These are just some tips. I highly recommend you turning off the crappy firewall. Its just horrible

Thanks for your info.I just wanna get a router which can directly support IPTV+broadband with WIFI n+2 usb port.I found currently ASUS and TPLINK are only doing the beta test on its mid class product but no high end one.I hope more products will join the group to support Unifi service and break the monopoly of by TM with its crappy dlink router. smile.gif

sweet. Hope they would do the custom firmware to higher end model such as RT-16N and RT-56U as well.

Nice, very nice.  I understand that Asus is coming up with dual-band routers.  Is there, if you would happen to know, an Asus model that supports dual-band?  5ghz is kind of necessary with so many 802.1b/g/n around and the fact that 2.4ghz has only 3 usable channels don't help.
*
Asus do have. RT-56U @ RM499. What do u mean by 2.4GHz only has 3 usable channels? i thought maximum up to 14? no?

Will have to see how it goes but it was rumored that upon reaching the cap limit, the speed will be capped at 10% of your package's speed (e.g. 10mbps will likely be throttled down to 1mbps).

Would be great if someone can make a comparison and pros and cons between the tp link and asus router.

Does the asus download manager for torrent support download only or both downloading and seeding(uploading)? Can use a usb hub to expand the usage of the usb port?

Is the wireless range of the asus router comparable to the tp link router?

hi prasys,

1) being naked in the internet is how dangerous is it? u mean identity theft, email content exposure , internet browsing history , credit card , password etc. all of this thing i mentioned?

2) i used 802.11 n/b/g (mixed) after i tested that my connection will break off if i just use b/g due to the distance from router to laptop using wifi. so wireless signal is change to 802.11 n unfortunately when i used only n, iphone cannot use wifi. So now it's ok using the mixed.

actually if ur behind NAT its considered OK unless ur router is compromised...
would prefer to install firewall and etc on my PC, as it has more processing power..

unless u take a high end router that has enough cpu cycles to do the SPI processing

cause if there isn't enough cpu cycles and etc.. ur packets will be drop and thus leading to weird funny anomaly when browsing the web..
