try running group policy in home premium. and try running IIS server and remote desktop.

you may not need the features of ultimate but others do.

That's why i said [cool.gif "Average Home User".[/b} Wakarimasu?? This doesn't include geeks who have 10 PCs at home, cofigure what group policy yadda and tweak like tomorrow's never come. smile.gif

Not everyone running what IIS servers and yadda. Remote desktop?? I'll rather have PC anywhere/netop or some other 3rd party software.

IMO, Ultimate is just MS excuse of ripping users off with low quality software.

I saw the Daily Show on CNN.

What a total N00B lar Bill Gates. He was defending his OS against OS-X and the fact that it was "evolutionary" rather than "revolutionary".

Too much nothing-specialness about this much hyped technology.

Bitlocker Drive encryption is only available on Vista Ultimate.. Problem is, My ageing iBook with OSX10.3 (latest is 10.4 btw), also has drive encryption built in with a pretty interface to boot.

And you mean who? Ultimate was never for averange home user. If it was, Microsoft will never have released the Home Premium/Basic Version of Vista. I think the word HOME is a big clue enough for everyone here, but certainly not you. Even vendors like Dell are installing Home Premium with the ability to upgrade to Business later, none offers Ultimate yet. Thus your post was just plain ignorant. And FYI, I'd rather use the Ultimate any day. Remote Desktop works better than any 3rd party software I tested and I need to use that. And if you think it's low quality, fine, don't use it. Nobody is making you buy this. You just read somewhere on the net about this and come in here and post like you know everything. BAH!

i have the evaluation ultimate and also same problem with the thumbnails. i solved this by going to computer (same as my computer in xp) and right click it, and select properties then advanced tab. then under performance, select settings and under visual effects tab, make sure you check the box "view as thumbnails instead of icons"

So how do u like it so far? I find XP of course to be faster and Vista to be sluggish when multitasking. However, things pick up to XP speed when you turn off Aero glass. So far all my hardware work except my scanner which needs a new driver. My mobile phone also connects automatically to Vista (USB) but I haven't tested it yet as modem. I don't know if I want to spend the $ to upgrade once this evaluation expires, XP is working fine for me and as they say, why fix it if it ain't broke.

there was a windows update for my Geforce 7600GS but after I installed that, Aero glass stopped functioning and I could only get Vista Basic theme. Weird. I had to revert using System Restore.

EDIT: tested my sony mobile phone as modem to connect to diginet. works well. now the only thing that doesn't work is my scanner (need new driver). and need to get new Nero too.

A Microsoft representative confirmed that users may buy an OEM copy of Windows Vista at a substantial discount, provided they adhere to the terms of the license - which, incidentally, may mean providing support for family members.

In addition, users should still be subject to the same familiar re-activation restrictions as users of a retail Vista license and Windows XP, a spokeswoman said. Users can alter the PC's hardware substantially, but they will be forced to reactivate - not repurchase the OEM software - if they do, she said.

One system builder pointed out, however, that Microsoft's OEM license forbids the software from being transferred to a whole new machine, from scratch, once it is installed on the original target machine.

OEM copies of Vista began showing up this week at e-tailers like Newegg.com, for substantial discounts, which can run up to half off the price of a standalone retail copy of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. Microsoft is also offering its own in-house discounts, in the form of a Vista Family Pack, which allows the purchase of up to two copies of Vista Home Premium for $49.99, provided that a customer buy Windows Vista Ultimate at full price, through retail.

For those who don't need a full manual, however, the Windows Vista OEM versions offer substantial savings. Normally, such versions are restricted to "System Builders," not large corporations purchasing thousands or even hundreds of copies of the operating systems through Microsoft's volume licensing programs, but small mom-and-pop computer shops building individual systems for local communities. The license is agreed to when the shrinkwrap the package is sealed into is broken.

"System Builder software is designed for OEM system builders, and specifically for pre-installation on new PCs," said Elissa Brown, a Microsoft spokeswoman, via an email. "So, this software isn't really intended to be installed by end-users. OEM versions of Windows Vista that are delivered through the System Builder channel are licensed via a 'break-the-seal' model (in other words, the System Builder License on the outside of the software package is agreed-upon when the package is opened)."

Although retailers like Newegg have typically been prohibited from providing the software without accompanying hardware, Brown said this wasn't true. Readers of PC Magazine and dl.tv report that Newegg has continued its practice of bundling a token hardware component - drive cables, case screws or other knickknacks - as a way to offload any legal obligation.

"As long as Newegg is distributing the System Builder version of Windows Vista in an unopened package with the System Builder License adhered to the outside of the package, Newegg is not responsible for offering end user support," Brown said. "The party who opens the package (thus accepting the System Builder License) is required to offer end user support."

More specifically, "the system builder must place its support phone number in a noticeable location in the fully assembled computer system help files or end-user documentation," according to the terms of a publicly posted System Builder license posted to Microsoft's Web site. That version of the license does not specifically mention Windows Vista, however.

The OEM version of the Vista versions lacks a manual, but includes a "Quick Start" installation guide, Brown said. The Vista OEM versions will allow a user either to do a fresh installation, or to upgrade their previous Windows XP installation, she said.

Wow, nice twist there. smile.gif It mean when u buy the OEM, you're the MS support for yourself...LOL. This means MS will not entertain you if u call them up for support??

Well, i guess that won't be much of a problem for most people.

Thanks for replying. Me not quite understand why the thumbnail option is not by default. Average ppl like ALL of us here will have real trouble finding & browsing through options just to change simple option like this. Even turning off UAC need more than 5 clicks and multiple pages of stuff to read.
It's not that me hate Vista though, me really like the new visual interface and the full features ot Ultimate, Ultimate should let me elimate the need of some 3rd party software (me run a home web server), but there's some tiny-meeny stuff that made me rather running XP. For example, when u click the down arrow in the address bar in file explorer, there's no "My Computer", "My Documents", "Desktop" anymore, it's been replaced with the browsing history. Or is it some setting that we can change to bring it back? Oh me dunno, lazy to browse through pages of configurations, me will do just that when me free. Meanwhile, me will stick back to WinXP for my server & everyday use. Vista Ultimate will be my playtime OS, until the first service pack come out.
For other's info & to my surprise, all internal & external hardware works flawlessly with Vista Ultimate on 2 desktops & 4 Acer Centrino laptops that me installed on.
All machine uses more than 600MB of RAM with only the OS with no 3rd softwares & no programs/windows open BUT with AERO running.

Guys,
For your information, if you doesn't actiavate your Windows Vista after 14 days it will totally lock your Vista from logging into.

I was running and testing Windows Vista for more than 2 months. I can tell you it was not stable. As you can read from the newspaper, Dell start selling them. If you buy them I bet you going to cry. Many software/games won't run correctly. Many hardware drivers will not be compatible.

MyITLab power! Cheer!

Meh, dude, I was just saying, that with your post, it's like you are making it look like M$ is wanting Averange Home Users to buy the Ultimate version. What I did was pointing out, that you have left out that M$ also has the Home Premium/Home Basic Vista, and if you bother to read samurai1337's post earlier, he already shown that for a gamer, even Vista Home Premium is good enough. Your post was misleading.
